62 Just got this in an email. The natives are restless.

"By means of ever more effective methods of mind manipulation, the democracies will change their nature;
the quaint old forms - elections, parliaments, Supreme Courts and all the rest - will remain.
The underlying substance will be a new kind of totalitarianism. All the traditional names,
all the hallowed slogans will remain exactly what they were in the good old days.
Democracy and freedom will be the theme of every broadcast and editorial.
Meanwhile the ruling oligarchy and its highly trained elite of soldiers, policemen, thought-manufacturers
and mind manipulators will quietly run the show as they see fit."

You see this also with the USPTO (fee supported) budget as well. Fees
are always being siphoned off, such that the money raised by the USPTO
is not appropriated for USPTO functions.

106 i'm kinda wondering if the establishment itself isn't in favor of ending
the tax exemption for health care -- employers have long complained
that providing health insurance is expensive and reduces their global
competitiveness

No "maybe" about it. We're being played by all sides.

That said, 1) employers don't "have" to provide health insurance, they could choose not to, and simply pay higher salaries. They could have done that for decades. Indeed, some do.
2) Making employer paid health insurance tax deductible, not private insurance is a massive market disruption; one of those has to change.

This is what the "shutdown" was, which, by the fucking way, is NOT a government shutdown, excuse my french.

Essential parts of the government always run.

Frankly, it is only that part of the government that should exist anyway, all of it needs to be disbanded.

And then we cut that 'essential' part in half.

They don't want to bring it up, they would rather sit back and watch Obama continue to screw the pooch all by himself.

It depends on if ICE (actually DHS) is counted as "Mandatory" or "Discretionary" spending. If it's "discretionary," it has to be re-appropriated every budget. So not passing any funding for it would stop it cold.

If it's "mandatory" then it would automatically have funds appropriated equal to whatever they spent last year + x%.

And really the numbers were higher than that. Try 8 - 10k/yr per employee on the employer side of that ledger.

I'm still, technically, a Democrat, believe it or not.

Though in truth, even when I was an actual "Democrat" in beleif and just just name, I still rarely voted for actual Democratic candidates.

I'm one of those rare people who might be characterized as "sarcastic voters" -- I generally would choose the kookiest and most absurd candidate in every race, just as a "protest against the system."

Want to know who I voted for president in 2000!

Nader. Not because I cared about his platform, because he was the most absurd candidate.

'92? Ross Perot.

As far as local races (BART board, School District), I just scan the ballot for obviously psychotic vanity candidates, with names like "Frou Frou McGillicuddy Sharktank Faeriedust," and always vote for them.

You may have aleways wondered: How do these kook candidates rack up the 59 votes they get? Who is voting for them?

The answer: Me.

That all changed with the Gray Davis recall election in 2003. That was the very first election I ever got "serious" and voted for the best guy. It came down to a choice between Peter Camejo and Tom McClintock. You might that's nots, because Camejo was a Socialist and McClintock a far-right constitutionalist. But both were honest, sincere, and intelligent; I inspected both their positions, and chose McClintock as the obvious winner. (And really, I'm serious about Camejo: Despite socialist beliefs, he was a rare honest and sincere politician, which counts for a lot.)

Since 2003, I'm mostly voted for Republicans, by default, as the Dem party spun out of control, and I realized the time for childish protest voted was over.

driving -- even though I've changed jobs tons of times and lived in a
bunch of different states. I could switch, but I have a good deal so I
don't. Health insurance should be a similar market -- but it's not."

Health care is cartelized and controlled and uncompetitive and price-opaque, so it's costly as hell. Hence the need for "insurance" (basically expensive prepaid medical).

Car repair isn't cartelized and controlled. There are no artificial limits, for instance, placed on people training to become mechanics, as there are in medical education. Car repair is not perfectly price-transparent, but it's a hell of a lot more so than medicine. A good transmission shop WILL quote you a price over the phone in advance of the work. And you have legal recourse if it's radically more than the estimate provided.

If the government stuck its tentacles and snout and foul breath into auto repair to the same degree it has health care, then every time you needed an ordinary brake job or oil change, you'd be filing an insurance claim for four figures and worrying about the deductible.

While Democrats would be clamoring to "fix" everything by forcing through Obamacarcare.

No, and as I've said repeatedly I would support a forcing Obama to sign a budget that zero's out money for his EO. Times change and so do circumstances.

We now have all of Congress and just as importantly public opinion in our camp. We had neither of those last time.

But the idea that the 2013 shutdown did not hurt Republicans is just not true. And worse, there was no way we were ever going to win. Reid has sat on over 350 bills from the House, he rammed through Obamacare using bribes and threats. There was no way in hell either he or Obama was going to agree to defund Obamacare. And the public, which had largely been sheltered from Obamacare up to that point didn't want the shutdown.

I want to see them use every tool they have short of impeachment this time to stop this EO.

Bad was media saying mean things about Repubs. LIVs being vaguely upset Repubs weren't "getting things done".

Good was Repubs cementing ever harder the idea that they did everything humanly possible to stop Obamacare.

We do know for a fact, that claims that it was doing massive, historical damage to the Repub brand were false, were wrong.

It's possible it seriously helped Repubs. It's not possible it seriously hurt Repubs.

We can rule the doomsayers out.

Posted by: Your Friendly Danube River Guide

True.

HOWEVER, the results of 2014 prove beyond any doubt that the 2013 shutdown was NOT "disastrous" for the GOP.

It had no downward effect on the GOP's popularity.

The 2014 election results may not prove causality, but they do prove the ABSENCE of causality between the shutdown and the GOP's popularity. Because, whatever the cause, their popularity went UP afterward.

Also: Considering the absolutely FAIL and fakery of the 2014 polling, all slanted toward the Dems and against the GOP, I now think (as I did then, actully) that the "polling" in 2013 upon which we base our "knowledge" that the shutdown was "unpopular" was also all faked. I suspect the shutdown was very popular indeed.

My best guess, for what its worth (which ain't much) is that they will do a lot of delaying actions, avoid controversy, and be fairly quiet until 2016 (like the Democrats largely did from 2006-2008 ). So don't expect anything impressive, significant, or that could be portrayed as divisive from the GOP for 2 years of power. They're looking forward to the next election as they always have.

The problem with this approach is that there's ALWAYS another election just around the corner, so you end up like a baseball team that's "rebuilding" every year and never gets anywhere.

298 As I pointed out about ten million goddamn times after the shutdown, the Beltway GOP totally panicked due to one (1) poll which said that the public thought the shutdown was all the fault of evil Republicans who should suffer eternal banishment to outer darkness.

That one (1) poll was from CBS and it had absolutely ridiculously biased internals. Oversampling Democrats so heavily it might as well have been exclusively conducted in the worst ward of Newark, NJ.

That didn't stop the firecracker-in-a-henhouse shrieking hysterical flight away from the shutdown by the oh so brave Beltway GOP.

302 So, what you're suggesting is that the Republican rout in 2014 would have been bigger were it not for the shutdown?
Do you have any evidence for this opinion, or do you think that if you keep saying it over and over again that it'll start making sense?

No. And I never said that. What I said back in 2013 was that it was a futile battle with absolutely zero upside. Even if the entire Republican Congressional group was made up of Ted Cruz clones, they did not have the votes. And as people note here everyday, usually 2 or 300 hundreds times a day, the msm will spin anything as something evil done by Republicans.

So, you first explain to me how that was a winning strategy. Nobody has ever done that absent saying that if they just held out Obama and Reid would have caved. Uh huh. They would have caved on Obama's signature piece of legislation which, whether we like it or not, passed Congress and was certified as lawful by the SC.

I always thought a much better strategy was to get out of the way and let people see what Obamacare was really all about. Let Obama's destructive policies drag them down. Let the 6th year curse which almost always kills the incumbent presidents party do its thing.

From what I've read by insiders, by the time congress caved in 96 Clinton was about to surrender, and even with the coverage of sad park rangers, the damage wasn't nearly as significant as the impeachment hearings turning Bill Clinton into the underdog.

And this last shutdown was a PR disaster for the Obama administration.

And would have been more so if the establishment GOP had been behind it solidly, instead of resentfully looking for a way out.

You know those captioned photos people will post after a storm that was supposed to be huge and was instead a fizzle? One lone lawn chair knocked over, captioned as "We WILL rebuild."

That's the sort of mockery that should have been being visited on the government during the shutdown, constantly, during every opportunity, including interviews with the press.

::: Live shot, standing on sidewalk :::

"Well, as you can all see, the government shutdown, now in its second week, has resulted in violent chaos everywhere. Organized society has completely ceased to function. Just look!"

::: sweeps arm wide, camera pans back and forth :::

Birds and crickets chirping, people calmly going about their business, no fuss, no muss.

Enough of that type of clever agitprop, and people will start to ask, hey, gee whiz, what exactly DOES this whole huge expensive federal apparatus actually DO all day? It certainly has little or no effect on ordinary daily life when it's turned off.

"No. And I never said that".

You didn't, but it's a logical extension of your argument.

"What I said back in 2013
was that it was a futile battle with absolutely zero upside. Even if the
entire Republican Congressional group was made up of Ted Cruz clones,
they did not have the votes. And as people note here everyday, usually 2
or 300 hundreds times a day, the msm will spin anything as something
evil done by Republicans."

Not having zero upside is simply your opinion. You're completely lacking any evidence so far that supports the assertion that the shut-down was a negative for the GOP. Far more empirical evidence suggests that the shutdown was a positive. At worst it was a net neutral. Feel free to offer some actual evidence that it hurt the GOP.

Waiting for a favorable media environment is a pretty stupid strategy. Zero upside? Bringing national attention to government finance and the abuses of the Obama administration? Hardly "zero".

"I always thought a much better strategy was to get out of the way
and let people see what Obamacare was really all about. Let Obama's
destructive policies drag them down. Let the 6th year curse which almost
always kills the incumbent presidents party do its thing."

With the adversarial media environment you just talked about? And the issue in this thread being immigration and not Obamacare? So basically you're fine with vastly increasing the size of the Donk voting pool while the Media gets its act together and stops burying Obamacare.

With a proven winning strategy like that, it's no wonder we keep sliding left.

It was not an effort to stop Obamacare.

It was an effort to sort the wheat from the chaff and reveal who was willing to stand up and fight and who was not.

Who acted on principle and who acted on fear.

The shutdown revealed a lot and the public did not forget it in 2014.

There maybe something to that. Obamacare was such an unmitigated disaster it changed fortunes almost overnight so the pain was short-lived anyway.

Honestly, I think most LIV's don't have a clue what the shutdown was all about. All they heard everyday from the msm is that the Republicans shutdown the government and were killing park rangers or other crazy stuff. And you were never going to get politicians who were just starting their campaigns to hold out for a cause they had no chance of winning.

I'm not against pushing things to the brink if we have a chance to win. This time I think we have a chance and I support it. Different time, different circumstances. But its silly to say there was just one poll that showed the Republicans were taking the majority of the blame for the shutdown. There are many polls and data points that show it was doing just that.

He was released from the Liberian hospital on September 30 with documents declaring him free of clinical signs linked to Ebola, the ministry added.

As a precautionary measure, Indian authorities carried out tests on his body fluids, which confirmed traces of the virus in his semen, the statement said.

'Currently, this person is not having any symptoms of the disease. However, he would be kept under isolation in the special health facility of (the) Delhi Airport Health Organization, till such time his body fluids test negative and he is found medically fit to be discharged,' it said.

414 I don't think the shooting was related to domestic violence. I think the guy was off his rocker in the usual way.

He was kooks from way back, very bright, high hopes, but nuts.

Don't take this the wrong way, but he not only posted bible verses constantly, which is in and of itself not dispositive but a warning sign, and he made up his own proverbs in biblical form, which sends that into odd country. At any rate he was obsessing about his mood and trying to manage it.

He was under a great deal of financial stress, likely unemployable in a bad job market, because he is weirding people out, despite his fairly good-looking resume.

415 So anybody from West Africa who can get here, can stay cause it's too dangerous to go back to Africa cause Ebola.

Well, yes, but the DHS directive is really aimed at people already here. It's a "humanitarian" move.

So even if their main point is to allow more illegal immigration (not likely, really, considering where it would be coming from), you're never going to get anyone in charge to stand against it. Nor, frankly, do I necessarily think they should. I cannot imagine that illegal immigration from Sierra Leone and West Africa are a huge issue.

There aredistinct aspects of Gruberring:

Far more empirical evidence suggests that the shutdown was a positive. At worst it was a net neutral. Feel free to offer some actual evidence that it hurt the GOP.

Why? I could give you polls and you would say polls are meaningless. I give you the opinion of one of the most respected election analysts in the business, Sean Trende, and you wave it away.

Why aren't you showing me all the evidence that you have that it was a net plus for Republicans.

Yes, the SCOAMT was going to go Full Amnesty anyway. Nothing can be done about *that.*

The issue is with the Republicans already setting the stage for their retreat. They're already spreading disinformation that "oh, we can't defund this." And even if they can't defund it directly, they have lots of other options. I happen to favor NGU's plan of separate appropriations bills, but that's not the only option.

However, if they've set themselves up to retreat, then they're already planning a retreat. They're already planning to sell us out.

515 A recent meeting of bishops unleashed what one Vatican watcher called a tsunami of conservative backlash against the pope when it followed an agenda that sought to revisit long held doctrine on controversial social issues. The most vocal critic was American Cardinal Raymond Burke, who described the Church under Francis as like a ship without a rudder. But as conservative bishops and lower level clergy in the U.S. began to signal their agreement, Burke quickly found himself demoted from his powerful Vatican post to a purely ceremonial role.

Check with Weft cut loop.

He hacked into me last year for calling Boner a coward and that they'd never repeal Obamacare.

This was before Boner began saluting the Amnesty flag every chance he got.

Why would anyone think the GOP is going to fight Obama on any thing he's done?

They've given him carte blanc, they agree with what he's doing (maybe not to who he's doing it to) and they want that to be there for them when a Republican (of some sort or another) makes it back into office.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ was an Argentine cardinal of the Roman Catholic
Church. He was the current Archbishop of Buenos Aires, serving since 1998. He
was elevated to the cardinalate in 2001. Pope Francis the 1st took his name in
honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, an Italian Catholic friar and preacher (and
Catholic Saint) who worked with the poor and who founded both the Franciscan
order for men, and the Order of St. Clare for women. Something that may play
into this, which has also been overlooked by many is the fact that Francis of
Assisi was born in Italy. He was a roman priest/friar whose real name was
'Giovanni di Pietro (Peter) di Bernardone', but nicknamed Francesco. Some think
this translates literally to 'Peter the Roman.'

McCain actually proposed this in his campaign, to be accompanied by a personal tax credit offset. And, thanks to Gruber, we know that Obamacare will end employer health insurance entirely in about fifteen years or so at the outside. So yes, they all support it.

Truth is, so do I. Why should my health insurance be any different than my auto or life insurance?

The whole institution of employer provided health insurance came about originally as a way get around government mandated wage controls anyway, so getting rid of it is good on two counts.

Increases the duck stamp tax (rather radically, I might add) in perpetuity for the sole purpose of allowing the federales to acquire more land. Exactly $0.00 of said increase will go to the states, and so far as it allows the federales to buy up more land, it reduces the property tax base (government-owned land isn't subject to the property tax, after all).

Bullshit. The New Congress hasn't even been seated yet. And unlike the Democrats, the Republican Majority Leaders in both the House and the Senate don't ride rough shot over the rank and file. And in this case, especially, if they try I have a hunch there will be a revolt. You "may" be right, but both you and Fredo ought to wait till we see what the New COngress will do

658 McCain actually proposed this in his campaign, to be accompanied by a personal tax credit offset.

Posted by: MTF at November 20, 2014 04:15 PM (LISuA)

_____________

Agreed.

When employers pays for insurance, the employees have no incentive to be good consumers. Go to the doctor every week because I have the sniffles? Why not, it's free for me, my boss pays for it. Fuck him.

The only reason this exists is due to price controls imposed in WW2. Employers couldn't give raises so they started giving out non-cash income like health insurance. And that shit stuck around for 70 years unfortunately.

You can't be so naive to think Ted Cruz will be able to do shit. The GOP has made it abundantly clear that Cruz and a couple of other sane Republicans like Lee are persona non grata.

In other words, Cruz can talk all he wants but he has no power to do anything.

I'm not eager to surrended it's just that I have eyes and I can see what's going on. Bitch and Boner has said in no uncertain terms they will not shut down the govt. The only way - I repeat the ONLY WAY - to stop amnesty is by shutting down the govt.

I think you can now put 2 and 2 together and figure out why the GOP will not stop amnesty.

A real test is whether Boehner and McConnell are the new Majority Leaders or not. They don't deserve to be. Either one gets the boot, I think we have to admit there's been a real serious change towards real serious opposition.

694 A committee spokesman is now the Dreaded Establishment.

Well, guess what: McConnell was right and he and Roberts crushed their opponents. Those who contribute nothing but whining and complaining don't get - or deserve - a seat at the table now. Your little revolution failed. You are losers. No soup for you!

You've got enough wacko birds around here with Drew and many morons. If you want to throw in with them as their stock is downgraded, it's up to you. Stacy McCain just a few weeks ago stated flatly he saw NO DIFFRENCE AT ALL between McConnell and Reid or Boehner and Pelosi. That's just insane, irrational.

It's one thing to be wrong now and again, everyone is sometimes. But when you start talking freaking crazy stuff, you can't just dust off and try again like a mistake.

Credibility is hard to earn, and should not be tossed away lightly just to make the hungry monkeys squeal with delight.
