Don Lemon to Bill Cosby Accuser: Why Didn't You Just Bite His Penis?

A lot of hubbub about a gay black guy asking a straight white woman strange questions regarding her allegations of rape against a straight black guy.

"Can I ask you this -- and please, I don't mean to be crude," Lemon began, setting up his state of non-responsibility for the question to come.

"You know, there are ways not to perform oral sex if you don't want to do it," he said.

Tarshis, clearly surprised by the obvious implication of Lemon's coy comment, explained defensively that she was stoned at the time of the alleged incident, which she says happened when she was 19, adding "quite honestly, that didn’t even enter my mind. Now I wish it would have."

"Meaning the using of the teeth, right?" Lemon persisted, for viewers at home.

"Yes, that’s what I’m thinking you're --" Tarshis began.

"As a weapon," Lemon continued.

"I didn't even think of it," Tarshis reiterated.

"Biting," Lemon explained, for good measure.

"Ouch," she said, weakly, completing the TV tableau of a woman being asked by a TV news star on his CNN program to explain to viewers at home she had not taken this basic step to prevent her alleged attacker from raping her.

"I had to ask," Lemon said, putting back on his I'm Not Responsible, Just Doing My Job hat.

It's kind of a dumb, weird question. But that's okay; we are allowed to ask dumb, weird questions.

Or we used to be, anyway. Because of course Lemon is now getting it from the Feminist Left for the crime of How Dare You Subject Anyone Making a Serious Criminal Accusation to Any Skepticism Whatsoever.

In addition to being cravenly insensitive, Lemon's line of questioning shows a remarkable ignorance to how trauma affects people, as well as to how journalists should speak to survivors of sexual assault.

"Telling a survivor of any crime that it could have been avoided is not only disrespectful, it's offensive," Katherine Hull Fliflet, the VP of Communications for the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), told VICE. "It's really disheartening to see an interview like this."

Meantime, people are now parodying Lemon:

Okay... I'm not exactly a believer in The Singularity, here. I don't *really* think the machines are going to rise up and kill us all.

Nevertheless, I do know something about data and system security, and I know that the best way to secure a system is to prevent any possibility of access. That is to say... why the f*ck is our power grid accessible by ANY external method?

That is, I presume he's not just saying, "Oh, yeah, they could simultaneously bomb several power plants, and cause the grid to crash," because that's something different (and not something you'd expect the NSA to be talking about).

How these people will suffer when we return to truly dark times. The sensitivity police are killing resilience. Life ain't fuckin' fair, and if we ever get to the point where we're worried about food, water, shelter, basic security, the people who indulge in this leftist cult of offendedness and treat victimhood as the trump card of celebrity are going to be dog food really, really fast. 52 Sheesh. Doesn't this guy know that in today's America women have no obligaion to resist rape, or to be responsible for themselves and their security at any point? Indeed, it is proven that women often fail to realize they have been raped until the next day or even weeks later, so how can we ask them to consider aggressive self defense that might not even be warranted? Heck, even suggesting that women use a tool to check their drinks for drug tampering is an affront against decency. Nope - we must accept total passivity by women - anything else is teh evil patriarchy at work and probably involves slut-shaming and cis-norming and other horribly horrible things.

Yeah, I'm kinda ... no, I won't say I am on the feminists' side, I happen to have the same opinion.

I dated a girl in college who had been forced to blow a high school janitor. It traumatized her for life.

I got her to go down on me the first time we hooked up because it was usually easier to get head than to get the whole enchilada and she broke down crying afterwards and told me the story. Really messed her up. And after college she got fat, as rape victims often do.

We already have that. Only Congress can pass laws, including anything to do with immigration (which is specifically delegated to Congress in the Constitution). By definition then the President does not have this authority, as he himself has said on at least 23 public occasions.

That isn't the issue. Everyone agrees on illegality (except for the propaganda press maybe). The issue is what to do about it, and he can ignore a court just as easily as Congress.

Ok. Life isn't *really* like the Disney movies. Dogs can't play basketball, not because there's a specific rule against "dogs" playing basketball, but because one of the unspoken assumptions of the rules of basketball is "and all the players will be human."

Similarly, you don't make laws to say "we really mean it." It's already illegal for the president to change the citizenship status of any person without the specific authorization of Congress. Congress controls the laws regarding citizenship.

95 Before you all get snippy with the feminzis, there is actual, you know, real research that shows it is CLEARLY not possible for MOST people to physically resist a sexual assault.

The human brain does that. It does what it has to do to shut down the reasoning part of the brain, because survival is more instinctually, more crucially necessary at that moment than fighting off the attacker.

I would not go so far as to agree with the feminazis, that asking such questions is as re-traumatizing as the actual assault, but it is an indescribably dickish thing for a tv talk show host to do.

In a fairer world, such things would get one laughed and shamed off tv. But it won't.

There's no need to claim of actual violence or even explicit threats of violence -- just a feeling that an implicit threat of violence was in the air.

I agree. That sounds... off... to me. For one thing, how would your "non-rational" brain be sure it would survive the assault? Wouldn't the natural reaction be to fight- simply because retreat is not an option and your non-rational brain *is* going to be focused on survival?

Not resisting "to survive" is actually a rational choice- your reason overriding your instincts- in the knowledge (or at least on the assumption) that your attacker is more likely to leave you alive if you don't fight.

Not saying you're incorrect, but I'd really be interested in the research, it's methodologies, etc.

I imagine older assailants are easier to fight off than younger ones. And sober victims have an easier time fighting than victims who have been drugged, as Cosby's accusers claim to have been.

That said, I'm skeptical of the idea that research can claim most people are able or unable to prevent/resist a sexual assault. There are too many variables (age, health, past psychological issues, organic brain issues, environment, sobriety, etc) to make a blanket statement one way or the other. It should be enough to point out the difficulties of resisting without saying whether it's impossible for most or some or whatever.

Cosby was interviewed on NPR and refused to say anything. The reporter had to supply the visuals, "he's shaking his head no" (not as in denial, as in "I will not utter a word of this").

Janice Dickinson who used to be something wrotea book about her life and all the people she'd had sexual encounters with. She told Howard Stern in 2006 that she had left him out because he's too powerful, and told him this week that she'd been through the same feeling-loopy now he's on me thing.

The power relationship is important. Many of these women were young aspiring actresses and he was a legend. Compromising position (based on trust, "he's going to mentor me"), drugs, forced sex. It's a consistent pattern.

A study of more than 200 students revealed many wrongly blamed the effects of a "bad night out" on date-rape drugs, when they had just drunk excessively.

The study, published in the British Journal of Criminology, found three-quarters of students identified drink spiking as an important risk -- more than alcohol or drugs.
More than half said they knew someone whose drink had been spiked.

But despite popular beliefs, police have found no evidence that rape victims are commonly drugged with such substances, the researchers said.

..

Earlier this year, Australian researchers found that nont one of 97 young men and women admitted to hospital over 19 months to two Perth hospital claiming to have had their drinks spiked, had in fact been drugged.

Sure it is. If it's true.

I admit, part of me will always see Bill Cosby as Dr. Huckstable (or however you spell it), and kind of the goofy but on-point dad. So part of me is emotionally invested in the allegations not being true.

Attempting to separate those out, however, I'm still left with the question, and the grim knowledge that we'll likely never know. Even if he's innocent, any protestations of same will be ignored.

Which, come down to it, is why it is so, *so* important to maintain the complete integrity of rape investigations. When someone is raped, they have to know (on the one hand) that any position of power their assailant has will not protect him (so they'll go to the cops), but the accused have to have similar knowledge that they will get their day in court in a fair trial (to reduce instances of things like the Duke lacrosse team thingy).

Or maybe: Compromising position (based on trust, "he's going to mentor me" or "I know he will be so astounded at how wonderful our sex was, that I will become his wife or steady mistress, and therefore live in a fine house with lots of bling and not have to work."), and the suggestion of drugs and forced sex is made up after neither of the prior scenarios comes (heh) to fruition.

This whole charade bears a similarity to the "recovered memory" scam of a few decades ago.

203 A common tactic by a rapist' defense was to hold up an empty ink bottle and then have some else try to stick their quill in it.

This of course was nigh on impossible (except for luck) to do and thus was rape assumed to be as difficult if the woman didn't want to be penetrated.

I've always thought that had merit except that men are bigger, there's usually always a threat of some kind involved and in some cases the victim is incapacitated. So no that doesn't really stand up to any scrutiny.

Neither does puking or spitting or wriggling around like a eel pass muster as a defense.

And I'm not inclined to accept every charge of rape by every female that makes one. Especially if the target is rich/well known or the relationship was questionable from either side.

Women use the weapons they have and one of them is a charge of rape. That doesn't mean every charge of rape is false it just means they deserve examination and not blanket acceptance.

Oh, there are ? Have you personally experienced this ? Been under threat to perform and employed this tactic - to successful ends - to avoid it ??! No ? Gosh, then maybe you ought to STFU.

Feminists may suck uner 99% of circumstances, but not this one. You simply don't ask victims of rape if there was anything they could have done to prevent it. Seriously. What other crime exists where this question is asked ? Oh, you were robbed ? Did you try and tell the armed robber to fuck off ? I mean, there are ways to avoid being robbed.
