Recommendation: The Easy Way to Stop Smoking

So day 10 or something of the Flu That Won't Leave.

I'm hopeful that tomorrow I'll be mostly recovered. Today I feel like crap, as usual, but the two main symptoms -- a crippling migraine headache (with photophobia) and a hacking cough that goes on for five minutes and makes internal organs ache -- are mostly abated. Now I'm left with headache and coughing, but not so bad they're worth complaining about. Plus general flu symptoms.

I'm really annoyed because I started doing all these healthy things, and stopping doing a bunch of unhealthy ones, and so I was all ready to start Feeling Awesome when I caught this flu.

Speaking of that, I picked up a book a couple of weeks ago called The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, by Alan Carr.

I had quit smoking a while ago, going on to the e-cig, but I remained addicted to nicotine, and in fact could not imagine really ever going off nicotine.

Someone recommended this Easy Way book to me and I read it because I didn't have anything else going on.

It's actually pretty darn good, as this reconsideration of the book acknowledges.

I don't read many -- any -- Self-Help books so maybe this book had a bunch of tricks to play on me for which I had no defenses. Maybe I'm an easy score, given that I'm unfamiliar with self-help books' techniques generally.

And maybe I found it easy to quit smoking this time because I was especially motivated.

Basically I was feeling like crap every single day of my life and decided that I would not go on like that any longer -- it was time for some changes.

But even so, I think the book is pretty good. It's very repetitive, but in that repetition, it drills into you an important message:

You don't need to smoke. You didn't "need" to smoke before you started smoking. And you don't even really like smoking, do you? Think about it: Do you really like feeling hot smoke moving through your sinuses and lungs? Do you really like that feeling nicotine dependency gives you, of constantly being in mild drug withdrawal, with those withdraw symptoms only really absent from your life for the duration of the cigarette you're currently smoking? (The withdrawal symptoms, the craving, begins anew about 10 minutes after you finish your cigarette, and become urgent 45 minutes to an hour afterwards.)

The book addresses the psychological roots of nicotine addiction. The actual biological hook of nicotine addiction isn't really all that powerful, compared to truly addicting drugs like heroin, coke, or alcohol. No, it's really the psychological story that you the addict are telling yourself about the cigarette, and why you need it so much, and why smoking that next cigarette will make you Feel Good and why you Deserve That Cigarette, after all.

Reading the book, I eventually became not just convinced of the need to break the nicotine dependency, but actually enthusiastic about doing so. Just like Carr said I would.

It's now been about a month since I kicked smoking. I did not follow Carr's advice completely -- I didn't go cold turkey as he insists, but instead used the patch, nicorette gum, and an e-cig as nicotine replacement therapy to get me off actual cigarettes.

And I'm still not completely off nicotine, but I'm almost all the way off of it. I'm not on the patch anymore, I don't use the e-cig anymore, and I chew one or two pieces of Step 2 nicorette when I really have the urge per day. (Some days, being sick, I've forgotten to have any nicotine at all.)

But a month on and I'm not smoking and only having one or two mild doses of nicotine per day, if that. So, I'm not quite free of nicotine yet, but I'm not really addicted anymore, either.

I'd really recommend the book. I don't know what it is about it.

I guess that most of what it says is obvious, if you bothered to think about it,, but as an addict, you are deliberately avoiding thinking about the basis of your addiction, so it's helpful to have someone else state the obvious to your face.

The book, by the way, stays away from the scary stuff about smoking, almost entirely. There are no pictures of diseased lungs or gums or that sort of thing. The author's notion is that making someone nervous immediately makes them reach for a cigarette so discussing the dire health effects of smoking is actually counterproductive.

Instead he sticks to a softer approach -- won't you be happier when you don't have to to worry about only having three cigarettes left?

Obvious stuff, but I found it helpful. If you're still smoking, or you know a smoker, I'd spend the $7 to $10 for the book.

12 Yeah I read that too years ago.

The book says it's not about willpower and the proceeds to explain that quitting involves willpower.

It just does. I wrote a review online and people were all, "You're wrong!"

I'm not though. It is willpower. It's just getting your mind into a place to use that willpower to quit.

Carr died of lung cancer, but he died cigarette free if I remember correctly.

Ace,
10 days of flu symptoms are not normal. Some people (forget the percentage) of smokers who either completely go off of nicotine or cut down drastically get what is called the "smokers flu". Is this something that you have considered to be why you have been feeling so lousy?
The migraines, coughing, etc. are key indicators.

64 My dad quit cold turkey back in the early 60s. He was smoking two packs of unfiltered Lucky Strikes a day, and his family doctor (also a close family friend) told him while in the doctor's office, "Quit smoking right now, or get yourself another doctor."(and crushed the pack of cigs that were in my dad's pocket). My older brothers and sisters helped by finding and throwing out the cigs, and tainting certain hidden ones with drops of perfume. Within a month or so he was over it, and hadn't smoked since (he lived to the ripe old age of 87).

My father-in-law, though, used the Rx anti-depressant drug Zyban (a drug which has the side effect of also diminishing or removing your cravings for nicotine, and reduced withdrawal symptoms). He quit five and a half years ago, but he had already come down with emphysema and had his second heart attack at that point. He's currently in a nursing facility with end-stage COPD at age 70.

So, if you have a difficult time kicking the nicotine cravings, ask your doc about Zyban.

78 I smoked for ~25 years, started as a young teen, tried quitting a million times, like everybody else.

Eventually, I found nicotine lozenges, and ate them like candy to keep the nicotine cravings at bay without inhaling the bad stuff (no e-cigs in those days). That 90-day chart they give you with the lozenges? F that, I sucked on those things for years. Cost about the same as cigarettes, ironically enough (100% sure THAT'S no coincidence).

But I wasn't smoking.

Eventually I started interspersing sugar-free mints with the nicotine lozenges. Then for a few years I was off the nicotine lozenges, but a habitual consumer of sugar-free mints. For years. Ordered them by the carton, had a subscription order with Amazon. No joke.

But I wasn't consuming nicotine.

Now I'm off the mints, too (except on long bike rides, I keep 'em in the tank bag, just something to suck on for hours of riding when I'm trying to burn miles and not stop for food).

Today, maybe once or twice a year I have a very fleeting urge for a cigarette, nothing I feel anything close to needing to oblige. In a few minutes it passes.

And it only took me, huh, about a decade. :-)

99 Ace, congrats on quitting smoking! Of the possible AOS Lifestyle choices I'd say that smoking is not a pleasant vice. Of course I'm biased because I lost my awesome father to lung cancer, which was likely linked to 30+ years of smoking Salems. 100 Slight thread jack. I was watching Teen Titans on Cartoon Network with my girlfriends son and I just watched an overall anti-boy/pro-girl episode. Shit was absolutely over the top with it. 105 On my 5th week of e-cigs. I've stepped down from 18mg, to 16 mg, to 14 mg. Really noticed it for a few days each time but it passes every time.

What I noticed about week 3 is I no longer crave nicotine first thing in the morning. For the first time in 25 years. Also, I no longer cough shit up.

Tried an actual cigarette, an ultra light, over the weekend and couldn't finish it. I think because I'm used to the always consistently rich and mellow faux tobacco flavor or one of the sweet alternate flavors I used to scoff at. Currently Sweet Tarts is my alternate. The cigarette tasted like actual asphalt to me.

I plan to continue reducing the nicotine dosage until I'm just vaping flavor. Which, I guess a lot of people do.

Wish I would have tried this when Ace first posted about vaping.

Get well, man. Had that junk last year and it lasted a month.

134 My dad smoked on average four packs a day. He'd have a pall of smoke in the living room which bottomed out at around four feet. I've seen poker rooms with less smoke than that guy could generate.

To this day the smell of cigarette smoke not only makes me ill but brings up unpleasant memories.

Needless to say, I never picked up the habit.

Glad you're quitting ace; I know how hard it can be. It beat my dad.

Posted by: Burn the Witch at November 19, 2014 05:58 PM (xSCb6)

135 Way to go, Ace. I've been quit for about a year and two months. It was the second time I'd quit, and the previous time lasted about a year.

Smoking is often a chemical stress-busting crutch, for those of us who have a hard time (or are actively prohibited by company policy from) venting frustration. One can argue that it causes more stress by making you crave cigarettes and need to run out for a break, but my previous job was like a Chinese water torture of stress and suck, and cigarettes were the only thing that made it go away for even a few minutes.

There's a lot of argument over the best way to quit, but the best way to stay quit is to find out what stresses you, and cut it out of your life as much as you can. I started smoking again after my first quit, after I went back to that crappy job after a stint of independent contracting, for a lack of local options.

I quit again when I decided to move and left that job for the last time, and my new life in Texas is so much less stressful that I haven't had more than a momentary craving since.

Second time I quit was about thirty years ago. Never smoked another and never think about them. Quitting was one of the best things I ever did.

I used to get bronchitis when I got a cold or the flu. Never had bronchitis since I quit smoking, Wonderful!

I learned the cold turkey method from an Adventist outreach program. Felt crappy for two days, poorly for one, meh for another, then fine. No nicotine dependency after five days. YMMV, but it works for a lot of folks.

163 Congratulations, ace!

I am so pleased to hear this.

My mom died of brain cancer (that had originated from smoking-related lung cancer). I recall at the wake some of my older, distant relatives who smoked being so nervous and anxious. They wanted to quit, but mostly because they were afraid, I think. And I felt as if they would leave my mom's wake being too paralyzed with fear to quit. So I tried my best to say to them that they should think of quitting as a thing they would be doing for themselves, not a thing that they would be denying themselves.

Same mindset works for dieting in my experience. It is harder to be motivated to diet because you feel badly about your body than it is to do it as a step toward something positive (that sexy new dress you want to wear or whatever). Still hard, of course, but somehow it helps me a bit to frame it that way.

164 When I quit smoking, I just told everyone in my office, "Don't let me go to Marge and ask for a cigarette. Don't let me sneak one in the bathroom. I am a helpless child and need you to help me stop." And they did. "Go back to your office!" And it worked.

I must tell you that once I quit, and friends have told me the same thing, that the nicotine withdrawal changes and your allergies get worse, maybe because your pH changes, so that could be the source of your flu. So maybe the vape or the patch is a good idea...I'm considering it.

All in all though it was worth it. Congratulations!

197 For some, smoking is only a habit and it's easy for these folks to quit--although they still may start again years later. For others, it's an addiction and it's difficult to quit. What's insidious about cigarettes is that it's hard to limit yourself to three or four cigarettes a day. I doubt that many would really wreck your health. But it's hard to maintain . It would be cool to have a cigarette every now and then without becoming a regular smoker....

You habitually reach for your pocket whenever you sit certain places. You have to go outside as an outcast.

Gone.

Just gone. Poof.

That part of you dies. Your grieve. Then realize you're grieving for a terrible friend.

You realize you no longer care to commit suicide in slow motion. That you are not invincible as you imagined when you took up the habit. And you realize not smoking is a hell of a lot easier than smoking ever was.

The fun is gone.

There is no point in being transgressive anymore.

People still smoke?

That kills me. It does. When that part of you dies you imagine it died for the whole world, not just for you. And it actually surprises you when you see people still do smoke.

It sounds like a very good book.

246 The simple way to quit smoking is to get into a situation/environment (5 days in a hospital bed works quite well) that doesn't let you get anywhere tobacco.

Then, the key is to completely change all your tiny little habits, like which way you always take to work, your bathroom routine, your TV habits, and so on.

It takes 4 days to cleanse the nicotine from your system (according to the surgeon who put me in the situation), and if his patients didn't change their routines, they all went back to smoking. His success ratio was around 60%.

I have (after 10 years) no desire for a smoke, and if you want to smoke one in front of me, feel free.

247 #237 If only that were true. I've seen too many cancer patients, emphysema patients, people missing their jaws from oral cancer puffing away.

My father, after he ended up in the hospital with pneumonia, was told he would be okay if he stopped smoking...if he didn't he was in for a life of torture.

Three guesses which one he chose..first two don't count.

256 In my 26 years of smoking, the longest I had been without a smoke was during the 8 weeks of boot camp. After my first pulmonary embolism, Mrs. Nerd demanded I quit. And I tried. Lasted 4 days. So like the flaming addict I am, I hid it religiously. I should have been getting Christmas cards from Febreeze and Orbit gum. After the second hospital stay, I finally decided that this crap is unsustainable, and a solution had to be found.
My salvation has been the Vuse e-cig. None of the nasty smoke, lower nicotine content, somewhat cheaper.

261 I started smoking at 12 (sneaking) and full time at 14. It was cool to smoke in the 1970's and everyone I knew did.
I quit tens of times with gum, hypnosis and will power. I finally stopped in 1998 with a daily novena. Don't laugh, it worked. Maybe I was ready to stop.

I still have the urge to smoke and wish I could. I just know it would lead to an earlier death.

Ergo, if you make your body a healthy place, the microbes will just infest it even more badly. If you train your body to survive extreme conditions like smoke and drink, well, it will be just like the habitat of thoses extremophile bugs that live in geyers. Nothing lives in there but the bugs that have evolved for thoses conditions. Make your body an inhospitable place for germs.

Evolve yourself. Science!

280 I quit after 15 years of smoking. I wasn't an especially heavy smoker... maybe 5 to 10 cigarettes per day (less on weekdays, more on weekends). Just went cold turkey and never looked back.

Do I miss it? Yes I do. I actually enjoyed smoking. I found it to be a highly-pleasurable activity. Just the physical act alone was enjoyable. If it weren't for the health concerns, I would be smoking today.

But, just because something feels good doesn't mean we should do it. In my case, quitting was fairly easy, but I don't have a very addictive personality. My advice to those who have trouble quitting is to keep on looking for the way that will help *you* quit. Everyone is different and there are a myriad of ways to accomplish the goal.

291 I 'quit' about ten years ago, cold turkey, more or less. After about five years of thinking about it, one day I stopped smoking cigarettes and haven't had one since. I did chew Nicorette gum, two or three 4 mg pieces a day, and slowly cut down.

I work in a dusty environment and having something in my mouth induces saliva flow and ameliorates the effect of the dust. For the last 6 or 7 years I have been able to nibble on one piece of gum a tiny bit at a time and make it last a month. I don't use any when not at work. It is possible to use regular gum, but it is not quite as satisfying as one thirtieth of a milligram of nicotine. I can live with that. I reckon I have about 15 years supply, more than enough to last me until I retire.

Re: WaitingforMartel above, about once a year or so I have a dream in which I smoke, and enjoy it. I have not had waking cravings for about 5 years.

292 12 weeks without a cigarette after 40 years of 1 to 1.5
packs a day (a habit started, ironically, to cover the smell of my daily pot habit as a 15 year old)...I can vouch for the efficacy of Chantix (third try's a charm) after sporadic efforts with nicorrette, the patch, and cold turkey over the years. My best advice is to hike trails with major verticals to remind you of your loss of lung function as motivation - my parents deaths of lung and pancreatic cancer, and my grandparents (blood and marriage) deaths of via same and heart disease and emphysema didn't have the same impact for some inexplicable reason...good luck.

293 Good for you Ace. Quitting smoking is the hardest thing I ever did. I quit right after the 2008 elections (I was lighting one right after another watching that f'ing victory rally in Grant Park), but I've had a few relapses since then. My last cig was over a year ago.

You probably can't feel it now because you're sick, but it was amazing to me how quickly my persistent smoker's cough went away. And, when I relapsed, it came right back. I don't miss that at all, nor do I mourn the days when every cold lasted forever and sometimes turned into bronchitis. Doesn't happen any more.

Since cigarettes are $7 a pack now and I was a pack and a half a day smoker - well, the extra cash is nice too.

299 1: Cough -- best remedy for cough is probably Vicodin. Most modern cough medicines don't really work (but you can get a good expectorant) for cough suppression. Your doctor can prescribe some cough medicine with codeine that will actually suppress it. Vicodin is a good alternative.

2: Smoking -- nicotine is a POWERFUL anti-depressant. Big pharma doesn't want you using nicotine, they would rather you use a prescription drug.

Remember -- 9 out of 10 doctors recommend drugs to their patients who use them.

303 Ace,
I quit smoking several times, it finally stuck but it took ten long years to overcome the habit.
It is worth the time and effects.
Hang in there and find something to do when the urge to smoke comes upon you, I used Popsicle, bike rides, snorkel diving as well as other less exotic substitutes for tobacco.
Bicycling works as does jogging because it's hard to smoke and bike/jog at the same time the same as snorkel diving.
If I can do it, you can do it.

305 FWIW, I found this site very helpful: http://whyquit.com/. It was posted by another Moron years ago in another quit smoking thread. Cold turkey after 30 years of smoking, 4 1/2 years ago now I think. The guy who writes that site is heavily in favor of cold turkey too, for some reason, but obviously different methods work for different people.. I will say one advantage to cold turkey for me was that the first three days were so awful I never wanted to go through THAT again, so I never picked up another cigarette. I still have nightmares sometimes that I started smoking again, and am going to have to quit all over again.

306
I also found whyquit very helpful and read it every day for support while I was quitting my 20-year half-to-whole pack a day habit. That was seven years ago and now I don't even think about smoking (maybe have 2 or 3 a year, if I'm out really drunk with good friends, but I usually just have a few puffs and toss it). I haven't looked at the site in a while, but when I was using it it was 100% non-commercial, no ads and the proprieter did not accept donations.
The reason he advocates cold turkey and disparages nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is because you are addicted to nicotine, not cigarettes. It's impossible to kick the habit when you keep administering the drug through alternative methods. This is really obvious, but you don't hear it much because there's a lot of money tied up in NRT. If you quit cold turkey, the nicotine is completely out of your body in THREE DAYS. Yeah it's a crappy three days (actually its a crappy coupla months) butthe drug isgone and at that point your body starts the physical process of rebuilding and kicking the habit. You just have to endure some cravings and let your body do the rest of the work.
When you use replacement therapy, the nicotine is NEVER GONE. It's always there in your bloodstream so your body will always ask for more of it.In other words, not going cold turkey is just torturing yourself. "Cutting down" just condemns yourself to a longer period of more and more cravings.
I remember reading on the website something like the following: Imagine if someone told you to quit your pack-a-day habit by just smoking one less cigarette each day. This sounds pretty simple at first but as you start getting down below ten cigs or so it's going to get really hard. The last week where you are going from seven to zero is especially brutal.
Now imagine someone else just quit cold turkey on day one. That person is completely nicotine-free by day three. While you are freaking out over the next seventeen days, that person is already in the process of rebuilding.
Anyway, food for thought. Best of luck to you Ace.
