Popehat non-ironically linked a Vox article today that wasn't awful.

83 I've always regarded Jake Tapper as one of the more reasonable New York Liberal Democrat Union members who run the media information control system because he would occasionally do a story that didn't fawn all over Obama.

But having said that, I wish to point out that he worked for for

"Democratic congressional candidate Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky (PA-13) and later served as her congressional press secretary. Tapper then worked for Washington, D.C. public relations firm, Powell Tate, run by Democrat Jody Powell and Republican Sheila Tate. He also worked briefly for Handgun Control Inc. (now the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence) in 1997."

His wife "Jennifer Marie Brown" works for Planned Parenthood.

He and his wife are pretty typical of the sort of inbreeding between the Democrat Party and it's affiliates, and the National media services.

A couple of weeks ago I read an interesting article by Ben Stein alleging that the "get Nixon" movement actually originated out of the CIA. Apparently Ben Bradlee (Washington Post editor at the time who died recently) was former CIA.

Ben Stein seems convinced that it was the Lefty/Ivy League (but I repeat myself) infested CIA which instigated the whole Watergate attack on Nixon.

I don't know, but I shouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be the case.

I'll say it again: fucker isn't even liked in his own field.
Sure he has a few articles that are considered "foundational" but they're mostly accidents (and I've found some pretty glaring flaws in them.)
In fact to the extend they're "foundational" it's only because they're compact summaries that are easy to hand to a 300 level class.

They invited him once to give the plenary at the annual meeting. It did not go well. I don't think he's shown up since.

Exactly. All the supposed cost-savings in such a system must come from rationing in one form or another. The much-derided death panels will be reality. The demand on the physician supply pool will produce a decrease in the quality of doctors coming out of med school.

Didn't vote for the dominant party? I guess you don't get an MRI, you'll take a visual exam and like it. A little older? Oh well, you're not going to pay that much more in taxes or be very productive--no new knee for you!

The system we have now leaves a lot to be desired, but the ACA is a nightmare that permanently changes the relationship of citizen and state. They own our lives now--and this will become more obvious when everyone is on the exchanges or it implodes and is reborn as single payer.

There is an out of print book, Silent Coup by Len Colodny and Robert Gettlin, that makes the case that the burglary was primarily intended to solve some of John Dean's domestic problems with his slut wife. G. Gordon Liddy subscribes to that theory and broadcast it. Dean sued him but was eventually forced to drop the suit but not before Dean admitted that he not only didn't write "his" book Blind Ambition, he didn't even read it.

I was disappointed the lawsuit was dropped. I was hoping for some quality entertainment.

To further elaborate on Ben Stein's interesting theory, he said that the Lefty/Ivy League infested CIA owed it's loyalty to Soviet Russia, and Nixon was working to open up relations to the Chinese, which at the time the Soviets regarded as a grave threat.

He suggests the order was issued from Moscow to the various soviet moles in the CIA to get Nixon, and that is what subsequently happened.

Again, it makes for a pretty good (and plausible) story, if you are inclined to believe that there is skullduggery going on in the world.

The Cadillac Tax is their way of lowering prices via lower demand. Same with the advisory panel.

Their means are Fascist ... but their ends are pure Adam Smith.

The problem is they're using the carrot and stick method, not to improve the market, but with the overriding concern of a large and powerful bureaucracy over it all. So all you do is find price pressures used to make you conform, not to drive efficiency and innovation.

226 All the supposed cost-savings in such a system must come from rationing in one form or another. The much-derided death panels will be reality. The demand on the physician supply pool will produce a decrease in the quality of doctors coming out of med school.

**********

Gruber already delineates a couple of plans for exaclty that.

One is "prospective reimbursement" which is disgusting if you ask me.

Basically the government at the beginning of the year pays the doctor a set amount per patient.

Say for example (as Gruber does) that a 25 year old male is worth about $1,500--the doctor gets to keep whatever he does not spend on tests for the patient, past the $1,500 the doctor assumes the risk.

Another "answer" that both Gruber and McDonough of Harvard propose is greater utilization of nurse practitioners.

McDonough brags about something he helped implement in Massachusetts where the nurse practitioner leads the team and decides when a patient sees a doctor.

As an aside--I was almost---fucked up big time when the military did this sort of thing by a nurse practitioner.

So take my word for it--not a good idea.

254 Stuck on a ladder in the garage, putting up some more lighting, and the radio has Hewitt on. He's got three "conservative" youngish pundits on, and they're offering various strategies on opposing O-care for the new GOP majorities.

Of the three, one *almost* accidentally suggested basing their opposition on substance - you know, actually opposing something because it's damaging and wrong and poor policy. As I recall all three of them implicitly (or explicitly) stipulated the delusional idiocy that the "backlash" from ending "entitlements" must frame the GOP strategy, and limit it.

The most destructive and unconstitutional policy disaster in our history, opposed by solid majorities from the outset, nearly unbelievable ineptness and Soviet-style hamhanded mendacity (Gruber) in pushing it and implementing it, causing serious harm to multiples of the people it's "helping", so bad that its authors are essentially trying to prevent/delay it being implemented to avoid even more electoral damage.

And the "opposition" party's "smart" pundits can barely even conceive of actually opposing the substance of the disaster, and doing anything real about it. Oh yes, the standard "replace and repeal" nonsense - without any reason to think they people have any idea what that would really mean (re-creating a real health insurance market, massive reduction in govt. interference).

So as you're savoring the limp, pathetic non-response of the GOP to tomorrow's declaration of a strongman state to replace our republic (amnesty vomit coming from the intern), keep in mind that what you're seeing is a template, not an aberration.

I disagree with your thinking on this. Healthcare would be just as good and automatically cheaper if everyone didn't have and use this stuff we call insurance, but which is really more of a slush/maintenance fund for healthcare services.

It has been pointed out that various health care industries which are generally *NOT* covered by insurance are getting better and cheaper every year, the obvious example being Keratotomy eye surgery.

The problem with expensive healthcare is the fact that the market has been distorted by governmental policy which more or less created the healthcare insurance industry.

The Healthcare industry is only partially market based, rather than completely market based.

I disagree. Excellent medical care became expensive when the govenment got into the health industry. Before that, it was affordable by almost anyone with a job. And for those without jobs, they could seek out charities designed for that very thing.

296 Correct. Government involvement largely created the current problems with healthcare cost.

Granted, good health care is expensive. But it is made vastly more so by inserting middlemen, by monopolistic practices, and creating a disconnect between the consumer's choices and actual costs.

High deductible insurance plans are quite illuminating.

Sort of except ACA does something completely nasty--it takes money from the middle class to subsidize health care for the poor--the government then turns around and pays providers chickenshit and therefore the providers stop seeing these patients.

At the end of one of McDonough's speeches an Obama navigator hits him upside the head with the reality on the ground--

now the poor have coverage but they cannot find providers--so you can insure all these people but health care insurance does not equal access. On top of that there's about a 54 or 57 day wait time, and providers are quitting.

So the middle class is paying through the nose so that we all can feel better about the poor getting health care insurance but they are not getting good health care.

You are completely wrong about health care and costs and insurance (as others have already pointed out).

Real insurance (in any context) is a very powerful financial tool. I'd say it's one of the 3 or 4 big factors in the development of the modern, prosperous world we live. That is how important it is.

Allow (that's what it is, "allow") a real insurance market to be re-created for health care, and you'll be amazed at how costs are contained. There are literally no real-world exceptions to the rule, but for just recent and dramatic examples see airline deregulation, telecom deregulation, natural gas deregulation.

Oh - and your perspective on deportation is equally off-base. Just saying "there's no way" 5 million will be deported (or more importantly, self-deport when that becomes the rational choice) is like saying there's no way to decrease air fares and increase the number of airlines and flights, or there's no way to build a 600-ship navy. Simply, obviously wrong, and certainly not the basis for a serious approach to deadly serious issues.

372 The three biggest problems with health insurance in America right now are all cost-increasers:

1) Government interference by regulation and laws
2) "health maintenance" plans that cover non-emergency costs like checkups and dieticians. Insurance should be for emergencies and life-threatening illnesses only.
3) People go to the doctor when they have insurance when they'd stay home and take aspirin without it.

Deal with those, you reduce costs. Reduce costs and the "crisis" goes away. But no government plan implemented by the usual suspects cares a damn about costs.

432 It's not so much how much it will cost, it's that it will destroy the healthcare system as what will emerge will be statistics driven, the employees will have little incentive to be conscientious about their work. Innovations will stagnate due to lack of funds and incentives.

Doctors, nurses, medical professionals of all stripes will opt out and go elsewhere and do something else worth their skills. (it's already happening now) The Doctors and nurses who remain will be the mediocre at best and criminally negligent at worst.

It will take months to get appointments (as in other countries with socialized medicine) people will become sicker and die due to the delays.

THAT'S what's really wrong with Socialized Medicine no matter how it's implemented.

"Non profit does not mean that people don't make a great deal of money."

True, but only by at best skating the law if not violating it outright. Ideally and by design non profits are pretty close to the bone at all times. Of course insurers have to carry enough money to cover all their claims at once in back money, so they'd necessarily need an exemption for savings.

Still McDonough when he blames Reagan he does not tell the audience about that Act--he says the problem was that Reagan tried to let the free market fix health care.

Posted by: Your Friendly Danube River Guide at November 19, 2014 02:08 PM (RJMhd)

478 healthcare will always be expensive as long as everyone demands the lastest thing, and aren't just satisfied with 20 year old healthcare. If we assume there is a technological point at which achieving any further advancement would take years with full commitment of resources, they'll stabilize, but they won't drop as long as we continue to misuse insurance and we all insist on caviar rather than deviled ham. Basically you need some people willing to buy the old and well understood for prices to start dropping.

Posted by: MrDave at November 19, 2014 02:21 PM (E2g2d)

479 EMTALA might just actually touch on a true moral dilemma and "market failure" - though not as much as some might thing.

But, as with everything else connected to this issue, none of the "externalities" (economist speak for, mostly, made-up problems whose solution requires govt. interference and reduction in market efficiency and freedom) would be all that difficult to cover if the 95% of the market were allowed to work rationally (real insurance, removal of gigantic tax code distortions, reduction of liability rip-off, etc.).

It's like declaring, in 1975, that the scanty air service to medium and small towns was a moral and social crisis, and "fixing it" by mandating such service and de facto nationalizing airlines and adding totheir normal red ink. Instead, deregulation unleashed an amazing growth in service that completely removed the "problem" without a bit of subsidy or interference.
