As a California resident it makes me sad to witness the immense damage done by Democrats and their "progressive" allies. According to the U.S. Census, California last year had a net out-migration of over 49,000 people, the most of any other state. The state has vast human and non-human assets. The climate and scenery are about as good as it gets. It's too bad that the politicians exploit those attractions by overtaxing and abusing those of us who can't bear the thought of leaving.
Among the many lessons shown in the recent election is that the rest of the country has chosen a very different path from the one blazed by California's Democratic politicians. California is now an outlier rather than a trendsetter. That's a good thing for the country. Following California is about the worst thing the country and the world could do. It does take getting used to, but it's worth leaving. You'll never look back. http://spectator.org/ Posted by: artisanal 'ette at November 19, 2014 09:47 AM (IXrOn) 16

>>> Beginning January 1 California drivers will see gasoline prices increase from 12 to 20 cents per gallon, possibly much more.
"heh. Keep it up Dems!" Well, um, yeah, you see, it's kind of like this. It WOULD have been the case that the Republican party here in Commiefornia WOULD have been able to blame this huge gasoline price hike on the Democrats exclusively. Except for... der Groppenfuhrer. Republicans in this state completely lost their senses and decided that a plastic Austrian android from Hollyweird who was voluntarily married to a Kennedy would be a *totally awesome* choice for Governor. Then, once elected Governator, the plastic Austrian android hired as staff a metric shit-ton of career liberal Democrats, and shoved through a huge pile of lunatic anti-global-warming malarkey including these fat new gasoline taxes. So, the whole line of attack is rather _blunted_. You've heard of "plenty of blame to go around"? Ahnuld made it possible for that to happen across party lines. Don't blame me. I instinctively mistrust anyone and anything who has even the slightest connection to the left-wing shitmire that is Hollyweird, and der Groppenfuhrer certainly confirmed that habit. I voted for Tom McClintock and would do so again. ...France is a racial tinderbox as home to both Europe's largest Muslim population, some six million, and its biggest Jewish community, around 500,000,... New York's Anti-Defamation League has found that France now has the highest percentage of people with anti-Semitic opinions in Western Europe: 37 percent, compared with 27 percent in Germany, 20 percent in Italy and 8 percent in Britain... ...Nice try, but not enough to reassure many French Jews, who are increasingly heeding the advice of the late Ariel Sharon in 2004: "Move to Israel, as soon as possible." Polls show that as many as 75 percent of French Jews are now considering the move. Others, undaunted by the prospect of walking into a barrage of Hamas rockets, ready to forgo five-week vacations and a thirty-five-hour workweek, have already left. Last year they numbered 3,289, up 60 percent from the year before, with over 5,000 expected to follow this year. French Jewish emigres to Israel are now second only to the exodus of Russians. For the first time since Israel was founded in 1948, they outnumber those from the United States. http://spectator.org/articles/61019/racist-moi Posted by: artisanal 'ette at November 19, 2014 10:00 AM (IXrOn) 67

The demise of the Republican hawk has been greatly exaggerated, if Tuesdays House leadership elections are any indicator.
Defense oriented conservatives won out in races for the chairmanships of key House panels, and in at least one case, a members perceived weakness on defense issues may have scuttled his bid to lead an influential bloc of House conservatives. What's the real story behind Hellen Keller.
My understanding is that she was not *born* blind and deaf. She lost her sight and hearing when she was very young, but after she had been exposed to language (3? 4?). So her problems at home were as much about her frustration at not being able to communicate as it was anything else. What she was taught by "someone spelling into her hand" was sign-language: so she could communicate again. Simply being able to communicate again helped enormously. yep
TRANSPARENT TYRANNY Opposing it shouldn't be bad politics. Don't Republicans understand their duty? yep, nope Axieties within the GOP over a possible government shutdown in the wake of Obama's promise to push amnesty by unconstitutional executive order continue to grow. Those anxieties don't show much confidence in the American voter. The fear appears to be that voters will punish the GOP in two years for opposing Obama's open tyranny. In other words, GOP leaders think the American people prefer unconstitutional government to a limited government shutdown aimed at stopping it. If that is true, American democracy is as degraded as Jonathan Gruber's infamous remarks suggest. In a healthy democracy, politicians wouldn't even debate whether or not to fund an unconstitutional order. They would automatically defund it. That GOP leaders turn to pollsters and image consultants before deliberating on such a fundamental issue is already a bad sign. By saying in effect that they will lose their power if they defend the Constitution, they reveal the emptiness of that power. http://spectator.org/articles/61028/transparent-tyranny Posted by: artisanal 'ette at November 19, 2014 10:09 AM (IXrOn) 89

And it is not even clear if they are correct in thinking that principled opposition constitutes bad politics. The government shutdown of 2013 obviously didn't impede GOP success. It may have contributed to it. In any case, it is hard to see how a refusal to fund Obama's illegal amnesty could prove more dangerous than that shutdown.

He's 13 now. 13 years of being treated like an idiot because you can't move. It's a "Johnny Got His Gun" scenario. There but for the grace of God. Good morning all!
Over at Insty's there was a comment regarding action that the House could take by itself- to hamstring Obama's amnesty order. Any lawyers about that are able to verify this action: ajacksonian Really, as this is not done via regular legislation, the House needs to pull the spending certifications of all Contract Officers attempting to carry out any orders like this. Perhaps suspend them for the entire agency and have all spending sign-offs go through the House, directly. Do that across-the-board for everything from gasoline to food supplies to travel to O&M and any agency will grind to a complete halt in days, if not hours. No contract personnel get paid, no programs under contract continue, none of the travel via contract carrier happens... even if the government owns the vehicle, the fuel is purchased on contract. The House doesn't need to pass a bill to do this as this is part of the FAR and DFAR and is baked into the cake via the certification process. The House has pulled certs before to stop spending that wasn't authorized in multiple agencies, so this isn't even a unique exercise of their power. And it is the power of the HOUSE not of Congress as that is the way the Constitution reads and that is the way laws were passed to put the FAR and DFAR into place. All of the FUNDING still happens. The SPENDING for contract work stops. Thus there are no furloughs as all direct government employees get paid. They don't get to go much of anywhere, however, or do very much... and if the buildings are powered by electrical contracts to local utilities, then the power goes out at the next billing cycle. This is done for convenience of the government. And via the will of the House. Here's the link: http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/198512/#respond Of course, such an action would require that Boehner generate femtogram of testosterone and a pico gram of spine- but I expect he'll crawl into the corner and cry while sucking on a bottle of bourbon like it's his noonie. Are Druze fighters Shiite? Who are they?
Posted by: seems legit at November 19, 2014 10:13 AM (A98Xu) Well let's not call them Duze fighters. Druze are a muslim sect- but very separate and distinct from other Muslims. Usually they are very loyal to what ever State they live in. In Israel they are very much integrated into Israeli Society although they tend to like to live in their own villages, but that is by choice. They serve, and serve with great distinction, in the IDF. Often in the most front line and important combat Units. They have FULL rights in Israel just as any Jew does. When I have been in Druze villages I have always felt very at home and the food and hospitality is wonderful. Did I say the food is great? I have sourly begun to question whether democracy per se is compatible with anything resembling constitutional order. Examples of this combination succeeding are not abundant. Posted by: torquewrench at November 19, 2014 10:12 AM (noWW6) Our government was not created as a Democracy. The founders hated Democracy. They created a representative Republic with a Democratic process. Over the years, ideas and policies have been implemented that has slowly moved us towards being more and more like a Democracy. The last three words of the 24th amendment were a serious mistake. The 26th amendment was also a mistake. Some would say the 19th was a mistake, but I don't agree so long as the franchise is limited to people who actually pay taxes. Helen Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan, was a devoted socialist. As is usual, when you only get one early training, and other points of view are blocked, it is hard to get a different opinion.
Of course, socialism is attractive to people who have no ability, or feel they have no ability to fend for themselves: Socialism is wonderful in that it says it is OK for a person to be dependent and that getting shif for tree is a right, not a drag on society and a form of theft. surpising that a system that makes you declare victimhood sells it as a way to claim you are not actually a victim. I've never gotten the impressionist thing. Posted by: Golfman Pro tip: Do drugs. Just not the brown acid. Posted by: rickb223 at November 19, 2014 10:06 AM (07lgx) Children, this is an example of "Pointillist" painting, similar to divisionist paintings by Seurat (which all make me jittery). This is where you paint with your pointer, not to be confused with "pitsillism" where you paint with your pit bull (I made this up unless wiki copied me). I do think this would be hard to do but I do not like it. Personal preference. I guess better than the prints of dogs playing cards (which someone gave my husband when we got married and I stupidly threw away as now I want to put them in his office as, yeah, that is how edumacated he is in art). If I ever see a velvet Elvis I am buying it for him. At any rate, not my favorite type of impressionism, which Monet, Monet, Pissarro, and other painters were famous for. Monet was very myopic, therefore I relate to his paintings and love them as I am a blind as a bat supermodel and life is very fuzzy. I have been go Giverny and think he is the best evah. I don't know if anyone has done any real looking into this, but the original question asked above, whether Keller was a fraud or not, is a good one. What we know of her biography is that she was severely neglected as a young child, and that usually has lasting effects on people. That a charlatan could come in and use her as some sort of tool for something else is not only possible, but is obviously very common in this world. Personally, I'm still not convinced Hawking is for real. Maybe he is, but I would not be shocked if he isn't. Posted by: BurtTC at November 19, 2014 10:28 AM (TOk1P) 154

I have seen many heart attacks, some lived and some died, but no one bled through their face openings that I can recall. In the good old days of medicine and nursing, nasal bleeding was a nose bleed. Puking blood was a gastric ulcer (or worse, a ruputred abdominal aneurysm). Have not witnessed bleeding from ear canals. Oh, and the tricky ebola testing does not always show positive, right? I don't have a theory. He communicates with the world through a keyboard, operated by his mouth, right? Who is to say what is actually creating the words that come out on that keyboard? There was a story about a kid not too long ago, was unable to communicate, like Hawking. They gave him a keyboard, and suddenly everyone discovered he was brilliant. The kid graduated from high school, was on his way to college before they discovered the programmers of the keyboard were wishfully interpreting his... whatever he did, I don't remember if he banged on the think, blinked, burped, or whatever, to get it to "communicate" his thoughts. Anyway, it was all completely fake. Not necessarily intentionally, but fake nonetheless. The kid was severely mentally disabled, which is what people thought before. They've no doubt been visiting conservative sites looking for reasons to act. In this case it was a convenient excuse to do what they wanted: to withhold information from the public. They're not scared, they're just creative at finding new excuses to avoid oversight from pesky citizens. You could visit just about any site 9at least one w/lively comments) and find a "threat." It's called free speech, and they hate it. Posted by: Lizzy at November 19, 2014 10:37 AM (ABcz/) 184

@179...pulmonary edema will produce a pinkish froth as you lie dying. But this 40 yr old woman "had no symptoms" after her travels to W. Africa. Then, in salon, drops dead and bleeds (per witness) from mouth and nose. Death usually does result in heart stopping. If autopsy shows heart melted that is another ballgame (and one we will never know about).
Gunshot to aorta? Yep, maybe those symptoms. Ruptured aorta from aneyrusm? Yep. Yep. Yep. Maybe sudden burst of gastric ulcer. Maybe. Ebola? check. Biohazard on "clean" death scene? check. Nineteen days after West Africa visit? Check. The unknown: if she cared for sick patients during recent visit. Either the "witness" lied or someone else did. Digital imaging technology destroyed art because we look back at what people did with oil paint as a primitive and unnecessarily labor-intensive approach to achieve the same effect we can get from a mouse click in image-processing software, and that software offers vastly more possibilities. Appreciation of art becomes instead a milder form of appreciation that the effect can be achieved with paint.

Wife was telling me this morning about some difficulty she's having getting in contact with some Irish photography studio. Which reminders me of a story I meant to post a while ago. Wife is writing entries for an Encyclopedia of Jesuits, and she needs the rights to the photos to complete the entry. The guy she's writing about (I can't remember the name, but it was something like Frank Bruno, the boxer) was a Jesuit who dabbled in photography. He had journeyed on the first leg of the Titanic voyage with the plan of disembarking in Ireland, last stop before the Trans-Atlantic trip. He met a wealthy American couple who liked his company and offered to pay his passage to the U.S. as well as his return trip if he would accompany them. The Jesuit wired back to his "Provincial" with the request, and promptly received a reply telling him to get off the boat immediately and get back to doing whatever he was supposed to be doing. So he took what turned out to be among the very last surviving photographs of the Titanic. He later went on to become the most decorated Chaplain of WW1. ...That's my version, when she's done I'll clean up the details. Still, a cool story I'd never heard before.

Yeah, it's an amazing story. He sold the Titanic photos at he time, and they were published all over the world. When he died he left crates of undeveloped film that went to the Jesuits, who eventually developed it all. The Jesuits license the use of the images rarely, and dearly, but since this is a project by/for Jesuits (her collaborators are all at Holy Cross) she's going to get them very cheap. Still has to pay the father and son studio that produces all the prints, though.

*staggers back in from court*
- I had a good one on Monday. I was doing the first advisement for people arrested over the weekend. One was a pretty aggravated domestic violence. Victim wife told me she wanted me to keep hubby in because she's afraid of him but she's so afraid of him that she doesn't want him to know that she is requesting that. That's not terribly unusual. So when the time comes the court asks her for her opinion on setting of bond. She pleads for a personal recognizance bond on the grounds that he's a swell guy and her only source of income. I thought that was laying it on a little thick but whatever. Then I tell the court about his bad history and the facts of this case and suggest a high cash only bond. Defendant says he feels that jail is not right for him. What is supposed to happen next is that the judge sets bond. But before he can, wife gets up again and tearfully requests a PR bond again. Judge sets a high bond but makes it cash or surety making it much more likely he can get out. I'm thinking, WTF? She could have just stood mute or at least not come back for round two of the begging and pleading to let him out. One thing for certain, whatever happens, it'll be my fault. Separation of church and state: Maryland county offers "rain tax" break if church preaches environmentalism ... http://t.co/Zh2OuXejLg Posted by: Costanza Defense at November 19, 2014 11:50 AM (ZPrif)
I noted a while back that the issues facing us are very deep, and at many levels. When some county clown can float something like this, or when cops get their jobs back after handing off a bleeding, hysterical naked teenager to a guy (turned out to be Jeffrey Dahmer) you've got serious invasive problems. Where did a county clown get the motion to coerce churches into disseminating their pet beliefs? Other than that he/she/it/other know they're bulletproof? Sock off.
Cripes, Collins was worse than I thought. Career averages of 3 points and 3 rebounds per game. Hasn't played more than ten minutes per game since 2011. what I worry about most is that obama, Boner, and McConnell have a secret plan worked out together Posted by: Soothsayer, All Knowing Of (Approximate) Knowledge at November 19, 2014 12:40 PM (q8I5f) 483
I'm waiting for the dedicated post on this, but looks like I am going to have to eat that crow I said I would, as I really didn't think Obama was going to go through with executive amnesty. If the report is true (and it sure looks like it is), he will. I'm hoping the GOP fights back with every Constitutional and political took at is disposal.

So I listened to Benedict Cumberbatch wax poetic on Fallon other day about his new movie, in which he plays a gay man and which is getting buzz. And according to Drudge earlier in week Selma is getting major awards buzz for its depiction of the civil rights era.
Is this year's Oscar race going to be yet another showdown of the black grievance groups vs the gay grievance groups? Blacks won last year, so that means Imitation Game and Cumberbatch must win this year, yes? I keep hoping films and actors will win on the merits of whether they are, you know, just plain GOOD, and not all this political dog and pony show crap; yes I am horribly naive. Apparently American Sniper also getting great buzz, but I don't see Eastwood getting an Oscar after the Chair monologue. Hollywood libs are nothing if not vicious and petty. 307 I love how amnesty is ONLY for people who have US born kids and have been here for 5 years. Yeah, because it's impossible to create a fake birth certificate for a kid and also impossible to create a fake rental agreement from 2007 showing you were here more than 5 years ago.

@431 Blue Hen
Been there. Load up on facts and let them have it quick and straight between the eyes and be relentless. Yes, they will shut up and later whine how "cruel you are" for knocking over their apple cart. Tell them to toughen up and do some research. There is a reason you have opinions and they are based on facts that are easily researched-- if one is so inclined. You will either be quietly dis-invited for future gatherings or they will cease to make obtuse comments around you. I found it a plus either way.
