That is a pretty good way of putting it. He kind of does the same thing in The Patriot: pretty much everything portrayed in the movie is heavily distorted - the burnt church, the execution of prisoners, the cultural divide between tidewater and backcountry folks, etc. - from the events they are loosely based on, but they elicit roughly the same emotional reaction from an early 21st century audience that people in the (in many ways kinder and gentler) 18th century had to the real thing, I think. Interesting...

You're referring to Apocoplyto. Yes. I was amazed by the plot. His ability to craft a story is genius. He did the same thing with Braveheart. I read that he went to great lengths in his research when he was writing the screenplay for the The Passion to match the movie to the written accounts of the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Get the Gringo was disappointing. The opening scene was good though. He's dressed as a clown though.

Leaving aside a quibble about the numbers, of course scientists collude. Not in the "meet in the dead of night" sense, but in the same sense that geese collude to fly south for the winter. They all know the score, and without a word spoken, know what to do.
Hell, if I were still active in research, I'd be writing grant proposals claiming how what I'd been working on all along could be used to help fight global warming. If the funding agencies cite doing so a priority in their RFAs (request for applications), then by God you fold that into your application somehow, some way. Grant funding is oxygen to academic scientists, and losing it is fatal - permanently - to your career.
It's like professional sports. Can you take a few years off (whether for injury or losing funding) and come back? Maybe, but probably not. And if you, as an active athlete, publicly state that your teammates are all on performance enhancing drugs, how do you think that would affect your career?

Not all are interested in a marxist type revolution, but they certainly won't be troubled to see it happen.
A portion of these, mostly the transnational, crony mega-crapitalists, are in a slack conspiracy. There are some like-minded, fellow travelers among the wealthy assholes of the world who have nothing greater in mind than to lay low democratic forms of governance and replace it with neo-aristocracy.
The pretenders are the associated useful idiots we have as Democrat pols, writers, actors, academics, and NGO fuckers. They all think they will get a turn at the helm but they are expendable chaff.

The sad part is that this isn't a joke - Seagal's "The Patriot" came out in 1998, 2 years before Emmerich's "The Patriot".
As for Emmerich's movie of the same name, it's probably Emmerich's "best" movie which of course isn't saying much.
When I first saw Emmerich's Patriot movie, I liked it because it had Mel Gibson being bad-ass and that is Mel's business. Upon the 2nd viewing though, I realized that the film is *only* a revenge film set during the American Revolution. The rationale of the Revolution is only briefly touched upon in the beginning of the movie, which appropriately also has the best line in the movie when Mel's character asks why he should trade one tyrant who lives 3,000 miles away for 3,000 tyrants living one mile away?
But I digress.

It's over-generous for Downey to make those demands in addition to being a bit odd. Further, Downey already said he doesn't want to do any more IronicMan stand-alone flicks. Many of the commenters on the movie/comic boards speculated that that demand was his way of saying no.

Yeah he's too old to hope for the return of heroic/romantic leads. The thing about directing/producing is (apart from that being his stronger suit), that he's in a position to do whatever he wants, project wise, if he so chooses. As long as he finances it. It's the hiring part for insider flicks that are thin. Mel doing villain would totally work and I suspect he'd be better at it anyway, than leading type roles, nowadays, even if offers were coming in. I dunno about weirdo roles... I hear what you're saying about risk. But my gut says he could really nail weirdo, particularly if combined with villain. Maybe he should forget about all that shit and just say "fuck it" I'm running with it.

Like Fred MacMurray (sp) was always a decent person to have on set - would pack his own lunch. And then I think Kathy Shaidle (sp) on PJM recounted a story of how Vincent Price did the intros and closings of a local Canadian show called 'Frightenstein' and cut his pay 'because he liked kids' and during the tapings went out on break to buy beer for the crew and then told a lot of stories.
Not a stuffed shirt at all, none of them. Sort of the point, really. How decent can you be with others and if that is your real personality. From what I have read all three passed that test.

In the end my family's recurring flaw seems to be the genuine belief that men should be free to pursue their own ends as much as possible and no King should exert tyranny over the mind of man.
The family has a rep for being a bit zealous on this front, we;ve had congress critters, captains in the new model army etc etc
It doesn't seem to make for a happy place in the order of things.

Today, I took my daily walk, only this time, I went a different route. My street loops around and rejoins itself just east of my house. It's about a 1.25 mile circuit.
Last summer, when I initially tried to begin walking for my health, it was very difficult. It was about a 40-minute walk, and it would take another 20 minutes for me to recover because I was so winded.
I walked it today with no problems.

Last month at my checkup, my dentist went off on Obamacare, and he was an early supporter of the law.
He got real pissed off when he found out that his policy included juvenile dentistry. A dentist that could work on his own kids for free has to pay for dentistry care for them, if he HAD children, which he doesn't.
Same way my sister who had a hysterectomy has to have maternity coverage.

And you should pull it out yourself and check to see if you don't have decent hardwood underneath. A lot of California houses have reasonable hardwood (fill nail holes, spot-sand, and coat) under hastily-installed 1970s wall-to-wall carpeting.

The problem I have is not the Gruber pushback in itself, it's the crickets on the substance of the matter.
This is completely reasonable.
However, sticking to the substance of the matter sends the message that there is no personal liability ... meaning that others can do this sort of thing again, and not have to worry about repercussions.
I view this as a bad choice. There needs to be massive personal pain ... on the scale the Democrats have been using for the past 20 years. Example: Sarah Palin.

I think our winter is a bit like California weather (Los Angeles) not like up north in San Francisco where last time we there in summer we almost froze (had to buy a jumper to keep warm)

I always thought she was cute. And she's certainly aged well. Her support for Gibson (re. the Downey story) is admirable. I think she and Ellen (not gorgeous, but funny) were a loss for our team.

That was "Contact", which was based on a novel by Carl Sagan. It was also Matthew McConaughey's first big movie; there's just something about him and wormholes.
The script was Sagan's usual "stand-back-man-I'm-a-scientist" bullshit; but the visuals were gorgeous. I thought the first minute of the movie alone was worth the price of admission. And Foster was good, as always.
