132 Pound Tumor Removed From Obese Woman

That's one way to drop a quick buck thirty-two:

Although weighing as much as a normal adult woman by itself, the tumour was less than half the size of the largest ever recorded to be removed intact.

In 1991, a surgeon at California's Stanford University Medical Center removed a multicystic ovarian mass weighing 302 pounds (138 kilograms), which Guinness World Records holds to be the biggest ever.

The woman survived and, according to Guinness World Records, she "left the operating theater on one stretcher and the cyst left on another."

In related news, the Democratic Party has just announced its new "message coordinator," having the responsbilities of crafting a unified coherent Democratic position on Iraq -- a 302 pound multicystic ovarian mass.

"I can't wait to get out there and finally start giving the people the hope and concrete solutions they crave," the 302 pound multicystic ovarian mass was quoted as saying.

The mass is expected to "work closely" with Chris Lehane. It is believed this will be his first encounter with anything having to do with ovaries.

Thanks to Jack "Slublog" Straw.

4 Tumors have to be the most repulsive things to think about, but this reminds me of the tumor taken from a woman back in the 1950s. The woman is dead but the tumor lives in a lab! I can't remember where I read that. Google it if you want more info.

BTW, at which point do you stop and say to yourself, "I've got a thing growing in me that already weighs XX pounds. Maybe I should see a specilaist." At 20, 30, 40 pounds? How can it reach 100 or more before these women had surgery to remove it?

That's the HeLa cell line, taken from a cervical tumor. It's so mutated that they've given it a species name (its genome is a combination of Human and HPV, and the cells are immortal). It's so virulent that it can contaminate anything it comes in contact with.

6 Mike with a nice cheap shot. Sort of like the one that his dad gave his mom about 35 years ago.

7 Thanks for the info Axolotl (and I thought my moniker was unpronounceable).

"the cells are immortal. It's so virulent that it can contaminate anything it comes in contact with."

Good enough reason for me never to work in microbiology.

A TV show (I believe the Guinness Book show that was on for a while) a few years ago featured a woman who had a huge tumor. It may have been the world-record 302-pound one, but, if not, it was certainly in that league. Anyway, this woman was extremely agorophobic. She knew the tumor was a bad thing, and she knew it was growing to ridiculous proportions, and her family was begging her to go to a doctor, but she just couldn't bear to leave the house. Until, finally, the horror of the tumor became worse than the horror of going outside.

The gruesome thing about her tumor (and many large tumors) is it had hair and teeth growing in it. Basically it's genetic junk and cells randomly trigger into becoming various things that your DNA can grow.

Cheap to yoyu maybe. but $20 wasn't as easy to come by in 1971.

10 Well, a disembodied tumor couldn't do any WORSE at giving voice to Democrat "plans" such as they are.

11 Oh God, Bob! Now, I'll have nightmares.

The family should just have gone to court to get her committed for her own health. A pschyatrist could have sedated her long before the tumor grew like that.

12 Thats one very big tumor to be carrying around all these years
