Gratuitous Llama Netflix Movie Non-Review

After hemming and hawing for a few days, I've had to come clean to Netflix that I managed to lose two of its DVD's within the space of about 48 hours. Bang goes 40 bucks, because that's the you-lost-it-you-buy-it fee.

The trouble is that when I get a new DVD, I open the envelope, check the disk and then leave it in the pile of mail on the kitchen counter. Evidently, the last couple times somebody came through to jihad the pile of junk mail, catalogues and teh like, those little white sleeves got caught up and pitched into the trash. I guess I'm going to have to be more disciplined about keeping track of these things.

Incidently, the two movies in question were Hidalgo and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, neither of which I have still yet seen.

I also just got 300. Tell me, folks, is it really worth it?

Robbo, you should have bought the DVDs at Walmart or Target for $9.99 and then stuffed all three discs into the return envelope that came with "300". You would have at least saved yourself $20.

Plan B would be deepdiscountdvd.com (free shipping) - Hidalgo $11.21 KKBB $17.36. It's still a $11.50 savings and you can't put a price on denying the Netflix bastages the satisfaction.

Plan C (if you wanted to role the dice): buy Hidalgo, sent it back. Say you mailed KKBB and they never got it. They probably would have given you a mulligan on that one (based on my experience).

Damn, I'm a cheap mofo ain't I?

1 300 is okay. If your frame of reference is "comic book" then you should have a fun time watching it. It might be a little better viewing if you've had a drink or two.

2 Robbo, what I did was buy a couple of DVD clamshell cases at Staples, really cheap. I clean off every disc I get with rubbing alcohol and paper towels, and put them in the case.

I tuck the folded envelope into the inside left part of the case and take the white paper sleeve and slip it in the front of the outside of the case under the plastic liner (for easy identification). And they sit on my DVD shelf until I need them.

The key is doing it as soon as you get the mail - even when the missus is yammering at you to help her corral the kids to dinner.

Hidalgo was actually pretty good. Never saw Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

300 was awesome but you'll lose some of the awesomeness on a TV screen. Enjoy.

4 Personally, I love 300 for all of the appropriate inner-adolescent reasons. I've watched it many times. I'm a big fan of the stylized action that has become the new way to transcribe graphic novels: I'm a big fan of Sin City as well.

If you liked Sin City, 300 will absolutely stun you. If not, 300 may not be your cup of tea.

6 300 is definitely worth watching. Having a drink in your hand while you watch it is not a bad idea. (But that's true of a lot of movies.)

7 300 is well worth watching for pure visual awesomeness, and for the general with-your-shield-or-upon-it tone of the whole thing. Also, it actually gets a couple of the historical facts right. Most of them, however, are just wildly, gratingly wrong. I won’t pick any specific nits here, but whether or not you enjoy the movie will depend on which matters more to you: the visuals and red-bloodedness, or freedom-loving Spartans who look down on religion and despise homosexuals.
