Tech News

  • Speaking of Apple Applebees left its database password in its Android app, installed by over a million people. (Tech Crunch)

I am sometimes amazed that our species has survived this long.

  • Nagare Labs is making progress on the impossible: DRAM that runs more like SRAM. (Tom's Hardware)

The commodity dynamic memory (DRAM) found in every computer - except for example the Raspberry Pi Pico - is a tradeoff: It's much cheaper than static memory and much smaller, but it's slow and it leaks - it needs to be constantly refreshed where the contents are read and written back. That's invisible these days but if you look at older systems it was very obvious; the Zilog Z80 CPU had an integrated refresh counter and the Commodore Amiga had refresh slots baked in to the DMA allocation.

It looks like this still needs to be refreshed, but it solves a different leak: With conventional DRAM every read erases the data and the memory chip also has to write it back afterwards.

Long story short, the new memory uses two transistors per bit instead of one for DRAM or two for SRAM, is five times denser than SRAM, and fourteen times faster than DRAM. Only problem remaining is that it doesn't exist outside of lab samples yet.

  • Six more Nvidia GPUs with a total value of $11 million have been stolen in transit from a third-world country, this time California. (WCCFTech)

The cards left Oakland bound for Texas but only made it as far as San Bernardino County before the entire truck was abducted by aliens.

  • Some less bleak political news closer to home: The ruling Labor (Maoist) government at the heart of the rot down under, my birth state of Victoria, is now polling third ahead of state elections on the 28th.

The Greens (Khmer Vert) are polling fourth.

First are the Liberals (Conservative Squish), with second place going to One Nation (Conservative Non-Squish).

To give you an idea of how unpopular Labor has made themselves, they are polling at 22% in their own stronghold. And thanks to preferential voting (used by Victorian state and Australian federal elections) a situation where Labor loses numerically but wins a majority of seats as happened in the UK is all but impossible.

    I hope this trend spreads.

  • Repotted all 29 seedlings in coconut fiber propagation pots so I can just pop them in the ground.

Now in the process of digging out the ground to plant them in. It's hard clay riddled with rocks and roots and builder's debris, so this is a lot of work. I planted one boronia this morning to replace the one that didn't make it through the winter, leaving 42 plants in various sizes of pot sitting by the walkway to my front door.

This is what the half-ton of gardeny stuff is for - soil improvement so I can grow something other than tussock grass and weeds, and mulch so that the tussock grass and weeds don't grow back.

I feel less dumb, now, by comparison! Perhaps wrongly.

6 Found another of those blasted iron staples the builders left behind. I'll need to get my garden fork to pry this one out; it's embedded in rock-hard clay.

Not that big - about eight inches long. Most of the builder's debris is bits of brick, but I've pulled out about a dozen of these things as well.

12 Sounds like you need a little metal detector to find those staples, Pixy, because they are like roaches; if you see one that means there are hundreds hiding in the wall.

15 Willowed:

I'm going to tell you what I expect the loons in the new Congress to do. 1. Impeach and convict both President Trump and VP Vance - removing both from office. This will cause the Speaker of the House, Ilhan Omar, to become president. 2.Change the filibuster back to a speaking filibuster only. 3.Pack the Supreme Court with 20 or so idiots like KBJ currently on the court. This will mean that the court will approve the effective removal of the Bill of Rights. 4. Add DC and Puerto Rico as new states giving the Democrats 4 extra Senators and more Representatives. 5. Institute Bills of Attainder, so that you can be declared guilty by act of the legislature. 6. Formally fund Antifa to attack anyone who resists.

The question I have for the rest of you, is what the fk are you going to do about any of this? Consider your answers carefully before you say what you are going to do.

And before you point out that Ilhan Omar wasn't born here and can't be president; remember the packed SCOTUS: KBJ doesn't even know what a woman is, so 20 more of her...

They breed?

I'm not sure exactly what they are for; they're much bigger than the common ones used with staple guns so my theory is that they were used to hold together the supplies used for construction and not in the house itself.

1. Despite what TV says; They can't do ballistics on a .22lr.
2. .22 revolvers don't leave ejected spent cartridges lying around as evidence.

Haha! No, it's like, if you see a roach, and you think, oh, I've got a roach ... you probably have lots and lots of roaches, if you start looking.

But I take your point.

22 "And on the "they can't sue all of us" it includes the classing Apple menu icon."

The Sylphide OS, which looks like the early Mac UI, uses a font that looks remarkably similar to the one developed by Susan Kare in 1983. The original name for the font was Elefont and was later changed to Chicago by Steve Jobs because he didn't like having fonts named after Philadelphia public transportation stops.

24 For those who don't Remember what happened to Gloria Estefan:

In 1990 her tour bus was involved in a bad traffic accident and she was temporarily paralyzed by the broken back she got in the accident. They surgically stabilized her spine and she got some use of her legs back. It was enough that she was able to sing and perform again, but her dancing was simply gone. I'm glad we have videos of her pre-accident to remember her by.

25 If the Dems accomplished everything on that list in two years they'd have several states seceding and a civil war on their hands by 2028.

And since the Democrat party would be the insurrectionists, again, it would not turn out like it did last time as I suspect the siege of their cities would not work out well for them.

41 Good Morining all.

Sounds like you have Alabama red clay for soil Pixy, I tried for years to have a garden, but the soil always reverted back to concrete when it dried up.

If the Democrats tried/did those things ... lets just say that they would unexpectedly find out why it was a bad idea.
