MORNING RANT - The Corporate Follies: Wing Stop Decided to Become “a Tech Company that also Sells Wings,” and Puzzlingly, It’s Now Struggling to Sell Wings

e-wing shop.png

News that a quick-service restaurant chain is suffering from a persistent decline in sales is not necessarily a significant story. At any given time, some restaurant chains are growing, some are stable, and some are in decline. The headlines about Wing Stop’s struggles only caught my eye because there was one near a former office of mine. I liked Wing Stop’s food and I was a frequent customer when there was a convenient location. Now, reading about its current problems, I see that Wing Stop is yet another mismanaged company wishing to be something it’s not. In this case, it’s a fast-food restaurant chain trying to re-imagine itself in the spirit of Silicon Valley.

Quite simply, the wing joint adopted a “digital-first strategy” in 2021, but many customers refused to play along as Wing Stop strove to avoid human interaction with its patrons. As customers were repelled by gimmicks that made ordering food more difficult, Wing Stop’s executives doubled down on their vision of making Wing Stop a tech company. They continued to reject their legacy model of serving wings and fries to customers who simply walk up to the counter and place an order.

Wing Stop’s current predicament is that same-store sales have declined significantly for six quarters in a row, with a cumulative decline exceeding 30%. That is a catastrophic level of lost revenue.

Amidst this free fall, Wing Stop’s CEO, Michael Skipworth, remains hell-bent on remaking the company into a digital company that rejects cash and customer interactions. In an interview with Restaurant Business Online in April 2024, Skipworth called Wing Stop “a technology company that sells chicken wings.”

A 2024 article in Nation’s Restaurant News quoted Skipworth as remaining committed to completely eliminating customer interactions, stating that “The company has a goal of digitizing 100% of transactions.”

An article in Nation’s Restaurant News last month discussed how proud Mr. Skipworth is about making its kiosk ordering system slower than ordering at a counter. He boasted that customers don’t feel rushed at a kiosk, therefore they spend about 50% more time placing an order than it takes to order from a human at a counter, and that the prompts and slow ordering process can lead to incremental menu items being ordered via a kiosk.

Slowing down the ordering process for fast food seems like a rather bold strategy. But what about the customers who’d prefer to just walk up to the counter and quickly place their order with a live human? What about the people stuck waiting behind a slow person navigating the kiosk and all its upsells? What about the people with cash in their pockets but lacking a credit card? The decline in same-store sales almost certainly includes many patrons who now view the ordering process as a time-consuming hassle, and then never came back.

Even worse, the fact that Wing Stop’s CEO dismisses its core product as being an afterthought to tech is a reminder of the poisoned philosophy that has captured so many C-Suites. That mindset is:

• Products are interchangeable units. In too many CEO minds, there is no difference between a chicken wing or an airplane seat or an appliance. Those are all just generic products to which business school wizardry is applied.

• Customer service is not considered a part of the product being sold.

• Staffing to assist customers is considered an intolerable expense.

• Customers are seen as remitters of electronic payments rather than as valued patrons.

• Product quality is not a primary focus.

If I were on the Board of a company (let’s call it “Acme Widget” ) and I inquired of the CEO what the mission of the company is, the answer I would need to hear is something like “Acme delivers shareholder value by selling the best widgets available, while providing an excellent customer experience.” If the CEO replied that his vision is to pivot Acme into a technology company that just happens to sell widgets, I would seek to replace him.

It’s almost funny that concurrent with its plummeting revenue, Wing Stop is boasting that its Q3 2026 digital sales are up to a record 74%! Percentages are funny that way. By running off cash and counter-service customers, the percentage of digital customer sales necessarily had to increase, even if the actual dollar amount didn’t.

To be fair, ordering fast food via an app is quicker and easier for loyal customers than having to order at a counter every visit. There is a chain sandwich shop near my office from whom I routinely order my usual lunch in just a matter of seconds via an app. I appreciate the convenience, and it’s imperative that fast food joints have an app for their loyal customers. But I refuse to download an app and add payment info for every eatery that I occasionally visit, especially not on my first visit.

Wing Stop has chosen to run off all but its most frequent customers in an effort to become a tech company. That does not sound like a restaurant growth strategy, nor a way to attract new customers, but it does sound like a contagious business fad that can wreck a company.

10 What I require of a fast food restaurant is a quick and seamless experience ordering food that arrives quickly and is as advertised.

As Buck points out; if I have to navigate some stupid ordering system that prolongs the irritation of being in the restaurant in the first place, I will not be a happy camper.

This is not rocket surgery!

14 Several years ago I ordered pizza from a local pizza joint. I ordered it online and had to jump through a number of hoops before I was able to get it done. Far more complicated than it needed to be.

It would have been far quicker and easier to order over the phone.

Which is what I'll probably do next time I order pizza from that location.

Most of the time I prefer to go there to eat, though.

18 Never had a Wing Stop wing. Don't care for that particular sort of food, anyway.

But the fact that the company is trying to eliminate as many humans as possible reminds me of something I was thinking about while trying to find a reason to get out of bed - a recurrent complaint from the 'young' is that life is too expensive; they can't afford a decent apartment, their wages are too low and forget about even trying to save a nest egg for a house. . .

Am I Grandpa Simpson for thinking that if these yutes want to save money, they should give up DoorDash, Uber, Tovala and every other form of 'convenience' that is only convenient to hoovering bux out of their pockets?

Good morning, all.

My theory is that some CEOs don't want to be "caretakers" of the brand and merely let it continue to be profitable and familiar. They want to leave their mark. They want to be on the cover of Fortune. They want to be famous beyond the business world.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at November 06, 2026 11:15 AM (mmrXZ)

32 When making road trips, McDonalds was our usual stop for coffee and sometimes lunch. The kiosk ordering made it such a pain we no longer stop there.

About this: "In too many CEO minds, there is no difference between a chicken wing or an airplane seat or an appliance. "

Not a new phenomena. Way back at the end of the last century I moved to a new job with my company, doing sales support at an automotive customer. The two major divisions were called "Develop Product" and "Produce Product".

I wondered how many customers went to the car dealership and asked the salesman for a product.

People loved to dump on Hooters, but I found their wings to be some of the best on the market.

I love a good sized wing, breaded and tossed in whatever sauce I choose, dripping on the plate as I eat it. Hooters was really good at it.

That technique is lost nowadays.

They were on their way back to that when Hulk Hogan took over and was bringing it back to original, then he died and they're all closing down.

37 COVID did such a number on Mickey D's.
The customer at the counter is assiduously ignored.
All attention is given to The Great And Powerful Drive Thru.
The big kiosk is completely non-intuitve and frankly a bit intimidating.
And no more bright primary colors. Just blah grey and off white surfaces with the occasional brown laminate.
All housed within a personality-free utilitarian square box which can easily be converted into a Taco Bell in less than a week.

52 The oldest axiom in business is never piss off your customers. How many times a day is this violated? I've been in meetings where they literally discussed ways to make it harder for customers to be satisfied.

I work for a company now that prioritizes itinerant customers over long time ones. We were bought out about three years ago by a behemoth version of our company to become the largest in our industry. Our new masters have a different format to their primary product although it is much the same as ours. But their business model, at least to me, places the priority on short term gain over long term customers. Oh well. I'm just playing out the string now until something better comes along.

Buy a company.

Company loses revenue.

77 The wing restaurant experiences I have had are sub-meh. Buffalo, Wings n Tings, a small local chain. Food ranged from pretty good to barely OK (none was better than what I make at home). Prices? Laughably outrageous. This goes back long before The Great Idiocy. Just part of an overall trend. We stopped eating out except for a handful of excellent places. The value proposition completely disappeared.

79 The oldest axiom in business is never piss off your customers.

Call my company's customer service line and you will get a US based human being 24/7/365 who has the authority to actually solve problems.

That's the one thing long term customers keep giving the thumbs up to in annual surveys.

84 Order wings from a kiosk or order wings from a Hooters waitress? Decisions, decisions.

A while back they opened a Hooters in Boston. Some angry feminist fire bombed it

Now this was a generation of feminism ago and back then the idea men could pay to have good looking women in shorts pretend to like them was a bridge to far for feminists.

I can't imagine how a business like that would work since trannies were introduced. Hire one as a waiter and you'll be down to serving Talaricos and Barack Obamas. Don't hire one and you'll be sued into oblivion.

86 Depends on how high the required wage is.

I was in Silicon Valley a few years ago, and I ate at a fast-food place where you placed your order and paid via your phone or a kiosk, got a text when your order was ready, and grabbed your order.

Zero human interaction.

Fast food chains in California have to pay their workers $20 an hour, so it pencils out.

In this day and age, most folks focus on the one, the profit to the exclusion of the other 2...and here we are, with AI being the newest way they screw the 2 prongs to just make more and more money.

I rarely eat out anymore, because the food generally isn't as good as I make at home, and I detest the fad of making them deliberately noisy, because this somehow conveys popularity.

102 Wing Stop pitching itself as a "technology company" had nothing to do with the service of its food.

It wasn't about making the service better or worse or even any different at all.

The "we are a technology company" was a naked pitch to the stock market at a time when tech was the hot ticket in stocks. "Invest in us! We don't sell cheap chicken wings, we're a technology company."

You know what? It worked. Big time. The company's stock went up 400% after launching this stunt. It eventually came back down to earth, as actual earnings declined. But you can be sure all the executives and big investors made a pile of money on this stunt.

110 Ok, consumer news update.
I recently learned a neat trick you can do with the WallyMart phone app.
It will help you find a specific product by telling you the aisle and even the section. But sometimes even that isn't enough such as the densely packed vitamins or supplements area.
So you can take it to The Next Level.
The app will allow you to find the specific spot for your organic gluten free fair trade free range rose hips by FLASHING THE SHELF TAG LIGHT FOR TEN SECONDS.
Is this a great country, or what?

Many companies are pivoting because leaders have been convinced by other leaders this is the future and if you are not pivoting you are losing out... and yet. Check out the pivot for Google, Amazon, Meta, Oracle, Microsoft, Adobe (Add any other big tech company.) you can think of) Which one of these, or your own example, has so willingly and quickly abandoned it's core products for these new untested, wet behind the ear, over hyped, and clearly unprofitable products. I would challenge anyone to point out a tech company which still has a robust core product the company is protecting and promoting while also carefully experimenting, testing, evaluating as an enhancement to the core product, and implementing in a responsible business model with a risk assessment which will allow the company to survive.

141 I love this subject. I think the thread is so topical.

The idea that Corporations exist to generate profit for Shareholders, via the sale of a Product the masses want and can afford, just isn't how most Corporations work now.

And hasn't been for a while.

Go read into the 60s and muscle-cars. And how two of the Big Three just wanted none of it, regardless of how the cars sold. Because, boiled down, those in Authority thought "it just wasn't right".

And on and on and on through the decades. The Old School Republican view of Corporations in a generally positive light is past its expiration date.

I'd vote for curtailing some Corporate Protections in the legal code.

Posted by: Smell the Glove at November 06, 2026 11:50 AM (7XuqV)

145 Quite simply, the wing joint adopted a “digital-first strategy” in 2021, but many customers refused to play along as Wing Stop strove to avoid human interaction with its patrons. As customers were repelled by gimmicks that made ordering food more difficult, Wing Stop’s executives doubled down on their vision of making Wing Stop a tech company. They continued to reject their legacy model of serving wings and fries to customers who simply walk up to the counter and place an order.

Yes, I want grabbing wings to be just like submitting a ticket to a help desk in India.

C'mon, executives.

Ok for a last second drop-in before watching a football game before grabbing some beer.

They could easily cut the price of their wings by 50% and still make a handsome profit.

Their wings aren't worth the current cost anyway. The New Upcoming Democrat Turbo-Inflation will probably kill their business.

She had a job making $60k/year so she could afford doing this but it basically meant she had little left for savings or other things.

Her argument was this wasn't fair, since she had a job she should be able to order out for all her food and have plenty left over for savings and other luxuries.

The interviewer pushed her for what she wanted and the answer was...a cash subsidy.

173 Now where is my free health care and $100k remote,4 day a week job Democrats promised me?

I'm reminded of the series of videos showing how big projects were made. The Panama Canal, railroads through the mountains of Ecuador or through Russian perma-frost. The building of bridges, the deep silver minds of Mexico, clearing a forest and planting row crops without modern machinery. The commercial seafood farming of south east Asia is some of the most inhumane conditions that make antebellum Southern Slavery look like a week at Club Med.

Death, disease, long hours and drab conditions were the norm. Hundreds of thousands of people, either Coolies, war prisoners or people down on their luck all recruited, didn't have families, didn't have a future and died ether on the job or within a few years due to wear and tear on the body.

And then we have Gen-Z with their gripes - not knowing how humans worked all around the world for all of human history.

I think conservatives lost this issue when they lost (conceded to some extent) on gay marriage. Gay culture has always been very transgressive, contemptuous of normality. That's now codified into society in various ways. Conservatives (whatever that term means these days) may succeed around the edges, like getting the weirdos to stop transitioning kids etc., but we lost the culture completely to Gay Inc. and there's no putting that faggy genie back in the bottle.

201 I’ve always liked Applebee’s (Chili’s, Olive Garden etc)… the only negative experience I’ve ever had at an Applebee’s… and it was only mildly negative: Around last Christmas I’m in a midwestern town that’s sorta dying… there’s an Applebee’s right next to the mall and the mall is dying; at least half the stores are now closed.

Anyway, went to Applebee’s for lunch and the food was good… but between the near deserted mall and Applebee’s itself being mostly empty, the atmosphere was depressing. Dying midwestern towns are depressing; that’s where I grew up

205 166 Trump raised electricity prices? AFAIK every single thing done with any connection to this would, of course, lead to the opposite. Younger people naturally have usually lacked worldliness and understanding of many basic things, and they still marinate in an orwellian make-believe world of media, but voting Dem because of electricity prices? So absurd it's funny.

________

This is a yuge problem that goes beyond politics. We have nearly an entire generation (or generations, plural) who think the world owes them a living. That they should get everything they want without having to work for it.

And probably most problematically, they think that everyone who has the things they want got those things just handed to them. That the guy with the house and car they want didn't work for that. No, he just woke up one morning and found out he owned a house and car.

There will always be the very lucky nepo babies, born into great wealth. Twas ever thus. But the vast majority of successful people were self-made. They built that themselves.

AI is probably a drag, both directly as a platform position and indirectly as a driver of inflation.

I don't see much reason to promote AI as it is likely to get overbuilt anyways and any competition with China is irrelevant without an accompanying reindustrialization and naval rebuild.

We always ate extremely well (mom’s a great cook) and had a wonderful childhood (well clothed and sheltered). Oh you know what? My dad’s salary never exceeded $30K per year as was often well below that. They were savers and budgeted and they did this during Carter inflation. So I’ve no patience for hearing how people are getting killed now. People are spoiled

257 Hispanics polled before voting put ICE/deportations far above economic concerns (40% to 26%). This is one of the most ominous data points of Tuesday (and it's backed up by the amazing switch of 2024 Trump Hispanics to Dems).

Electricity prices have *already* been driven up by data centers (= new demand)? Really, where? The prices aren't 95% driven by lack of capacity, "investment" in fake/wildly cost-inefficient "green" capacity? Things that have been going on for years. The table was set by the usual idiots, the price/capacity issues go back years.

Insurance? That's not driven by state-level misregulation? What's the federal share of blame there? Apart from "health" "insurance", which the party just handed the keys massively (further) f***ed up in recent years?

But of course I'm ignoring that the Dems have all sorts of fixes on offer for all these things, so of course they'll get the nod. Oh, wait. No, in fact they are neck-deep in every single self-inflicted problem, and have literally zero ideas or proposals to address any of them.

First, those two gremlin women who on their podcast, wished they could dig Charlie Kirk back up to kill him again? Chewy is a sponsor. If you use Chewy, cancel and tell them why. Tell your friends to BOYCOTT them. Make the donors of these vile lefties feel the Bud Lite pain. Make these podcasters lose money, since they hate capitalism.

Second, BUY from Sticker Mule! The owner, Anthony Constantino just won a house seat. In blue New York. The stickers are the best, and he is hated by the left. So many of my art friends rebuke him and are boycotting him because he supported Trump.

Funniest headline about Constantino's win I've found, from the Times Union:

"Anthony Constsntino was a sore (and unhinged) winner." Boo hoo. That describes the winners in the left perfectly as well.

261 We rarely eat at chains anymore.

There's some good mom and pop operations in my AO, and the food is good and won't break the bank.

Reminds me of the scene from "Back to School" starring Rodney Dangerfield. He's a wealthy construction business owner in a business class with his son and the teacher is talking about things you will need to consider when starting a business. Rodney says "Don't forget all the graft and kickbacks to union bosses and government bureaucracrats" and the teacher says stuff like that doesn't happen in the real world he's a teacher with no real world experience.

263 I’d bet60 of those stoves have never been used

The microwave was wildly popular in the 70s as well. Hence the Microwave Stand.

Today's 27 year olds weren't buying them then. Mostly because they weren't alive.

Women that are over 70 now, however ? Buying them as soon as Hubs worked enough overtime to afford one. Damn Millennials.

266 Crumbl is an Utah company, I enjoyed watching their rise during the pandemic. Who knew lazy people would pay for comfort food delivered to their door they can make for pennies? You can during a pandemic! Pots they tapped into social media and TikTok.

They are closing stores like mad now. Why? A natural overreach as they tap out the national market. Over complicating what they sell, way too many items now. A bad economy. Bad press from a shake that has more calories than you should consume in a day. Not making their staples, the pink cookie and the chocolate chip, always on menu. And apparently they have lowered the quality of their ingredients, and don't make everything in house anymore, which is the kiss of death.

Krispy Kreme did the same thing, don't make their donuts in store fresh, it's trucked in from another site. And Panera bread stopped making artisan bread in house, chains that did took over. Kissed of death.

The food industry rises and falls are fascinating.

Kind of but not really, what they are doing is demanding the American people make the USG their absent provider husband from the 70s.

Someone else alluded to the 70s microwaves, and i remember the story of our family's first color TV.....the kids do not understand how much hustle the 70s involved.

270 They could have just asked Panera customers about ordering from a kiosk. They hated it and many never went back.

272 In other news, it looks like it may be her step brothers and he set his father up. What a flipping trashy family.

The sub reddit mocking her, Hazbeen, and her entire family is my guilty pleasure. I call it an anthropology study.

In reality the commenters often make me laugh out loud. When she has videos of her as never crap it is hysterical.

Products are interchangeable units. In too many CEO minds, there is no difference between a chicken wing or an airplane seat or an appliance. Those are all just generic products to which business school wizardry is applied.

I'm young enough at 29 to remember when Bush the Elder had hired some idiot economist who confidently asserted "potato chips, computer chips, what’s the difference?" HW got raked over the coals for that one, with good reason.

Don't tell me that the Bushite GOPe is full of wicked smahrt people. Don't you dare.

276 Teddy: When you look at me, what do you see.
Robert McCall: [chuckles, shifts in his seat]
Teddy: The answer's nothing. I have no feeling about you one way or the other. You're like... like lint or a bottle cap. You're just a thing to remove.
