The clematis that had gone dormant during the hot, dry weather woke up and is blooming again. ![]() Edible Gardening/Putting Things By Ever heard of this? Apparently, it contains Vitamin K. Wonder how many of us could grow it indoors in winter?
![]() Small things add up Some interesting ideas on doing the things you can and maintaining an attitude of gratitude. Some AoSHQ threads have staying power. We finally got to hike in the Superstitions. The saguaros are abundant and thriving, the jagged skyline crystal clear blue with puffy clouds, the trail rocky and beckoning us on. We reached the end where there was running water from the rain storms. Also some very cool petroglyphs. There were a lot of people out enjoying this trail today! After our hike, we drove to Tortilla Flat. I didn't know such a place existed. It's a teeny ghost town. The saloon/restaurant walls are covered in dollar bills. People write their names and the date on the bill and staple it to the wall. Some are layered 4 deep. My favorite had colored over Washington's face with a Batman mask and put a conversation bubble saying "I am Batman." There were even dollar bills under plastic on the tabletop. I'm sure there was at least a million dollars stapled to the walls. For being out in the middle of nowhere, there were a heck if a lot of people having lunch there. The food was great! Part of the road was still flooded, but it wasn't on the part where we drove in. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you would like to send photos, stories, links, etc. for the Saturday Gardening Thread, the address is: ktinthegarden at g mail dot com Remember to include the nic or name by which you wish to be known at AoSHQ, or let us know if you want to remain a lurker.

When I was I student there were two Ginkgo trees on either side of the entrance to the main library at OSU. I don't know whether they were male or female trees but after it rained they always smelled like someone had lost their cookies there.

Posted by: Tuna Female, then... or at least one was. Every ginko sold by nurseries since they were introduced (? when) have been male clones. In any given population, at least 10% will become females. The seed inside the fruit is what is sold as "ginko biloba" (Latin name of the tree). The fruit is considered a delicacy in Asia, and actually has a neat taste...after you get it past your nose. Posted by: MkY given p at November 07, 2026 01:49 PM (ik4bQ) 6

Regarding the bar with the dollar bills. There is (or was) a club in Chania, Crete, that did the same thing. It was a watering hole for American soldiers, most of whom were on the island for live fire missile exercises. I left a dollar there myself back in August 1990.
That was where I learned that Ouzo is the devil's drink. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Rock 'n' Roll Martian at November 07, 2026 01:51 PM (0aYVJ) 8
One other thing about ginkos... they're very well mannered. They'll drop every leaf on the tree is a day or two.

Ok, more veggie tales-
Our Magyar peppers (grown for paprika) performed horribly all summer. Since it's cooled off, they've exploded. Go figger. Smoked a bunch yesterday for drying. Some we smoke, some we don't. Also, you'd think jalapenos would prefer hot, dry weather (well, I did). We're still getting folks to come pick all they want. Weird. Posted by: MkY at November 07, 2026 01:54 PM (ik4bQ) 11
As is Durian?
Posted by: AZ deplorable moron Dunno. Never had it. I've gotten a few people to try ginko. Most won't. Tuna's right. Smell's like a kennel. Posted by: MkY at November 07, 2026 01:56 PM (ik4bQ) 12

I think the crows have finally given up on my pecan tree. I collected a couple of pounds max, the other...probably 20+ lbs were "collected" by the f'n crows.
I did just harvest another pitaya (cactus fruit--smooth on outside, white on inside like a dragon fruit). The cactus has gone mad; more flowers are developing right now. Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at November 07, 2026 02:05 PM (l3cgK) 20
Thanks KT.
Nice to see Tortilla Flat is still plugging along. Fun place. I am in the woods currently. All the leaves are on the ground . The only splashes of green are the pine needles. Happy Saturday, Horde. Posted by: scampydog at November 07, 2026 02:05 PM (8EA41) 21
Music behind the ginkgo tree was beautiful, a perfect match for the beautiful tree. And a nice mind-cleanser for a guy who spent the last hour on computer TRYING to renew a license with Texas.

It's that time of year. The leave are turning to fall colors just before them wind takes them down. Even if the aren't brilliant in normal light, when the bright sunlight hits them they are transformed. The browns turn into deep burnished gold and bronze. The reds become all shades of ruby. The yellows can run the gamut from fresh dandelion to almost white. The remaining greens are interspersed throughout. And it all glows, as if lit from within. It is beautiful and almost holy to look at. There is usually just a two week window where the elements all work together but it is a wonderful window.

I'm trying to root some thyme stems. They haven't died or dried up yet. If I look VERY closely there might be the first hints of roots starting. But it's at the point where that might be wishful thinking. Time will tell.

In past years I took care of my plants better. This summer, the lychee died. The longan almost died (watered it in time). Blackberries went close to extinct (but are damn persistent). Only Pecan, Guavas, and Cactus did well.
I guess not watering much has it's price... Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at November 07, 2026 02:45 PM (l3cgK) 38
I always thought using sunlight was the best for a Christmas cactus and it does OK. But when I switched to a full spectrum LED light instead of a window or regular grow light, the thing is taking off. New leaves, stronger growth, and more flower buds than before. No fancy setup, just the bulb in a table lamp. Have to try that with the other succulents.

The Superstition Mountains remind me of one of the books I read when I was a kid. I was a voracious reader, and many of the books were about kids who lived out west and had the freedom to roam in nature. Sometimes they were looking for treasure, and sometimes they just stumbled upon something really cool that made them ask questions and try to figure out what happened. I was fascinated by the sense of adventure.
Are kids nowadays ever getting any adventure out in nature? Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at November 07, 2026 02:50 PM (w6EFb) 40
One of my Christmas cacti has flower buds, which is pretty cool since both of them have been on the back porch, mostly neglected.
Most of my plants have been through a Darwinian torture chamber this summer. Mama kind of sucked up all of my focus, and whatever I had left was drawn into escapist videos. So those who still live are pretty tough cookies. Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at November 07, 2026 02:53 PM (w6EFb) 41

The dampness in Canada will make the yard miserable and I have a TON of trees. We had one year, where the town couldn't reallly collect them.
So I prefer to mulch them. Sometimes into December. In Canada. Posted by: Stateless - Ralphy - 106.5 years old! Puppy at heart! at November 07, 2026 02:58 PM (Sco7b) 45
