The Last Good Generation: Gen X

Bridgit Phetasy:

Last week a New York Times/Siena poll found that Americans of every generation shifted to the left over the last two years -- except for one: Generation X.

Liberal Boomers, Millennials and Gen Zers were gobsmacked.

"What's wrong with Gen X?" they demanded.

As a member of that generation I'm here to tell you: Absolutely nothing.

In fact, we're the only thing standing between this country and communism -- the break-glass-in-case-of-emergency generation.

In the '90s they called us slackers. Now we're middle-aged, menopausal and holding the door at the Alamo.

Have you even said "thank you"?

No mystery why we're like this: It's because we were neglected -- latchkey kids who ate saltines for dinner.

Many of our parents got divorced and forgot they had children, which was fine because we were busy getting blackout drunk in hayfields and smoking weed in garages.

We also bullied each other -- and it made us resilient.

I'm only half kidding when I say the anti-bullying movement launched this country's decline.

Nobody came to save us, so we never expected the government to, either.

Our whole political philosophy could fit on a bumper sticker: Leave us alone.

And we vote on the basis of which party is more likely to do so.

...

You can't shame us into voting the way you want; we're immune to that emotional manipulation and bullying.

Generationally, we're the middle child.

We've got Boomers on one side going "just get a good job at the factory," Millennials on the other asking "what if the factory were a co-op?" and Zoomers off filming TikTok dances on the factory floor.

We're the ones who remember the Cold War and the internet before it ate everyone's brain, so we don't fall for every Russian psy-op that gets injected into the discourse. Thank you, "Red Dawn."

And yes, I know Gen X is irritatingly obsessed with itself. In our defense, nobody else was paying attention to us.

That's completely true. It's provably true -- the Boomers were such a big generation that the media continued to push Boomer-era bands and Boomer-era bullshit (hippie liberalism, Woodstock) even when we became adults. We all naively believed that when we became adults the culture would reflect our preferences, but no, it was all Boomer Crap all the time.

Until the Millennials came of age -- and then the culture shifted from Boomer-dominated to Millennial-dominated.

Not a day of Gen X dominated.

...

So leave it to us, the slackers.

The latchkey kids raised on divorce, hose water and indifference, now caring for four sets of aging boomers, paying for everyone's benefits and mowing the lawn on Saturday.

We didn't ask for the job. We never ask for anything. That's kind of the point.

Give a guy a 30-year mortgage and a backyard, and he won't want revolution.

He'll want a Traeger grill.

Unrelated: Unexpectedly, October's job creation numbers smashed expectations.

Wages went up, too.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 165,000 in October, and the unemployment rate changed little at 4.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment increased in professional and business services, in health care, and in transportation and warehousing.

...

In October, average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls increased by 14 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $38.00. Over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings have increased by 3.1 percent. In October, average hourly earnings of private-sector production and nonsupervisory employees rose by 12 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $32.75.

Yeah, that's how that works--you reduce illegal workers (supply of labor) and the price paid to the legal workers goes up, assuming the demand for labor stays the same (or increases, which it has done under Trump).

Supply and Demand. Amazing tools. Congress Critters pretend they've never heard or believed in them.

17 Belt to ass and dipshit, wonder how old these two are:
------------------
St. Louis Park Mayor Nadia Mohamed celebrated the results of Tuesday’s election with a social media post on TikTok declaring that “America has spoken” and using the phrase “belt to ass.”

“America has spoken! We want belt to ass!!! So start your engines!! #election,” Mohamed wrote in the caption of the video.

The video shows Mohamed celebrating in front of the Minnesota State Capitol while text across the screen reads, “When a blue wave hits!”

Mohamed was elected mayor in 2023 after previously serving on the St. Louis Park City Council.
-------------
Congressman-elect Matt Little also used profane language while addressing supporters at the DFL election watch party in downtown St. Paul after winning Minnesota’s Second Congressional District.

“I think it’s pretty clear America is sending a message,” Little said. “The first message they sent is that Pete Hegseth is a dipshit. The second message they sent is that JD Vance is a dipshit. The third and final message they sent is that Donald Trump is a dipshit.”

Speaking of Black female political dominance...

A whole-ass Black female city council, judiciary, local government of any kind...

Have you ever heard of a group called the Jack and Jills? An organization founded to create Black excellence about 90 years ago. Membership is through the mothers, although kids participate like 100%. it's all about getting educational and future professional opportunities for the kids.

Friend of mine knows it from the inside. He says those women in leadership are cats in a cage. Never seen such infighting, backstabbing, and conflict.

Technically I'm a very late boomer I suppose. And I share about 7% of the stereotypical traits (some mentioned in the post) of so-called boomers.

Would never occur to me to tell someone "get a job at the factory". Huh? Umm I lived through the major de-industrialization of the US, know it well, have always focused on economics though it's never been my job.

Sadly I know quite a few in my cohort who are just as ignorant, or driven by resentment or envy, as is easily seen in younger segments. People whose "politics" haven't changed since they were 17 - and these are pretty lazy uninformed politics. Life experience and work experience hasn't given them any wisdom at all, it appears.

Truly we are neither. Key formative events:

Apollo moonshots

The landslide election, Watergate, the resignation
OPEC embargo, stagnation, inflation
Islamic revolution

48 Young people yearn for the 1980s that they have heard so much about, but they don't seem to understand that most of what is different between now and then is an attitude. A way of looking at things and people.

They want what we have, but they don't want to make the decisions that they have to make to get it.

I'm really not sure how to say this right. I guess I'm saying people say "decline is a choice," but it's not just one choice, it's ongoing choices made every day. Watching it is like having a friend that wants a good family life like mine, but keeps making the same destructive life choices over and over again that keep them miserable.

The Boomers were raised by the Greatest Generation.
The Greatest put in all of the government programs that we are fighting against today.
They invented the UN, NATO, World Bank, IMF and all of the other international institutions we've been watching take more and more control over eight decades because that generation, and their parents, had fought a bloody war and wanted a better life for their children.

They had no clue that so many of their children would be brainwashed, indoctrinated and turned into socialists by the time they got to college.
Then hundreds of thousands of them got sent off to Vietnam.
That was the 60s and 70s and it only got worse from there.

To blame the Boomers for the way they were raised and for things that occurred that were beyond their control is ridiculous.

The Boomers just so happened to be born at and grew up during a post-war boom that lasted for twenty years and made America the most powerful country in the world.

Stop blaming old people for your own problems.

Almost find this fascinating.

Main reasons? Lowering inflation (including gasoline prices, until the war)? Securing the border? Starting the process of restoring rule of law in immigration? Unshackling US energy production resulting in greatest output in history? Initiating process of repatriating manufacturing industry to the US? Again, starting a climb in real wages for the middle/lower tiers - for the second time, he did it already in Term 1 prior to The Great Idiocy? Cutting government for the first time in 4 decades? Beginning to uncover and correct the massive, massive fraud ongoing against taxpayers in welfare programs? Building a ballroom (free to taxpayers) of the sort that's been a highly desired and overdue project for 3 or 4 presidents? Removing a hostile and dangerous and vile regime in Venezuela with one special forces operation?

And the list goes on.

104 For those knocking Boomers, and I don't care:

We were poor when we bought our first house under Reagan in 1985 at 12.45% interest rates. Saving money on one income (well, I worked as a nurse 1 day/week) for five years after we married.

Two houses later we are doing very well. Without any help from anyone.

We ate Hamburger Helper and other stuff we cooked at home. Going out to dinner was reserved for a birthday or our wedding anniversary poor.

Starbucks did not exist then. Taco Bell or McDonald's was a treat. It was rare to spend money on anything but rent or food. I was wearing college sweaters during my first pregnancy 2yrs later.

So, shut thy pie hole at 7.18% interest rates for a 30yr mortgage with a downpayment you saved for. We had it worse with two kids to raise. We didn't complain and had a great life.
