  • Yes we have no frozen bananas, part the two: Hackers have hit supermarket freezers across Belgium and Sweden, turning up the defrosting units, pushing temperatures up to 50C and destroying food. (Tom's Hardware)

And Ireland, Estonia, and the Netherlands as well.
"We've been working all night and morning to disconnect the affected units from the network."
    Wut.
CEO Stephan Moelans said that while the company has been working "very hard" to protect its fridges against the vulnerability, physical modifications to its units are required. The company says switching units to a secure internet connection is the simplest solution in the meantime, a measure carried out by most of its customers in the wake of the France attack.
It seems at least that this attack is on a smaller scale because many companies notice eventually if you keep stealing their wallets.

4 Pixy, if you can help: If I use the archive.is site to archive something I have read on the web, while it's loading I see all kinds of things that end in gif and other scary-looking letters. I am on a Mac. Is archive.is loading bad things onto my computer?

Here's an article I saved at archive.is:

from the ONT:

This is cool; from the ONT:

236 BTW, I'm doing my part tomorrow. My aunt asked me to drive her friends and her from her retirement home to the voting precinct. She called me earlier tonight and told me she rounded up 14, then whispered into the phone...only Republicans, which made me laugh.

So, cutting out of work to rent a van (and still have to take two trips to get everyone in there). Should be fun. I'm bringing snacks and contraband for them to smuggle back into the joint.

7 so I suppose the network news (does that still exist) will be analyzing every vote tomorrow morning hoping for a Socialist victory. Maybe the least we can hope that some of the old crusty members on congress will finally see their last days living off the people.

11 I'm going to drive up to the voting prescient. Rather walk but still fighting a cold and I have gout. Not as bad as I have had it but enough I don't want to walk very far. So, I'm driving.

13 I'm black-pilling a bit, because I'm assuming everything will be rigged (or call it "intentionally not rigged") for sweeping R victories, which will then be used as a pretext for a nationwide campaign of delegitimization efforts and general helter skelter nonsense.

But I'm also not black-pilling on the whole, because I don't actually think it will work. It's just going to suck and be very, very annoying.

24 Since the first freezer hacking incidents were weeks ago, I wonder why they haven't taken any measures in the meantime.
People are indeed stupid, but are they really this stupid?
When the hackers do this in the US (or Japan etc.), in another couple of weeks, they'll catch everyone by surprise.

29 The prices for RPI are absurd.

Unless you have some niche use case, I’d steer completely clear of it.

30 I worked on communications systems. The Internet Protocol became the standard.

But there is no effing way my customers would ever connect their equipment to the Internet. Completely private networks were developed.

IP is great for connectivity. But when you buy gas at the pump, you really don't want your credit card info passing through the World Wide Web.

Some idiots in Europe connected their smart freezers to the Internet instead of deploying a costlier private network.

33 I didn't dig too deep, but were these "freezers" large distribution warehouses? Or smaller individual retail stores?

The first is much more likely to be run on a full on automation system (Schneider, Siemens, JCI, whoever). Those can be very robust for security, especially lately. But they can also be left wide the hell open if they're not set up right by the installers. I'd be curious to know what the system was that got attacked.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at November 03, 2026 04:55 AM (aKiSo)

34 The only buyers of RPI are going to be industrial only at this point, if you need to tinker with a microcontroller, get an ESP32.

If you need a small computer, get a refurbed HP sff for less than an RPI 5.
