39 Overview of "Fin du travail"

"Fin du travail" (The End of the Working Day) is an oil painting created by French artist Jules Breton between 1886 and 1887. This artwork is a significant representation of the realism movement, showcasing the daily lives of peasant women as they conclude their labor in the fields at sunset

Two former staffers are accusing Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola of repeatedly using the n-word, including once to attack an Army veteran who organized a fundraiser for her.

An unnamed staffer says that during an October 25, 2024 dinner to honor Black Army soldiers who helped construct the Alaska-Canada Highway during World War II, she used the slur while privately lashing out at the man promoting the event.

Ed Wesley, an Army veteran and former commander of the American Legion Post 34, had urged Peltola’s campaign to purchase multiple tables for the event, assuring her they would be filled. But when the event was poorly attended and the tables sat mostly empty, according to Alaska Landmine, Peltola lost it, calling Wesley a “scammer” and the n-word, according to the former staffer.

“I can’t believe that n—r,” she allegedly said

108 CBD has used at least one other painting by Breton, The Song of the Lark. That one got me interested in Breton's art and today's increases that interest. He has a wonderful ability to portray his subject's (often peasants) posture to create a mood. His realistic use of light and the landscape adds to that mood. In this scene there is no way to ignore the tired women as they trudge under their burdens at the end of a day in the field. The image would connect with anyone who has done a long day of heavy labor. (Raises my hand.) Even if rural themes don't appeal to you, his paintings are worth the time to study.

The realism and accuracy of his work reminds me of the Pre-Raphaelites that I so enjoy.

If this scene was used in a movie, it would be something that stays with the audience long after leaving the theater.

According to Grok,

Duncanthrax is a mid-tier, occasional commenter rather than a high-volume poster, appearing in threads on AoSHQ's comment archive (acecomments.mu.nu) across topics like gun rights, media criticism, and political satire—hallmarks of the blog's content.

Tone: Dry, bellicose wit with a touch of world-weary cynicism. Comments are concise but punchy, favoring clever one-liners over lengthy rants.

Topics: Predominantly conservative-leaning takes on U.S. politics (e.g., mocking liberal media figures like Jim Acosta), Second Amendment advocacy in gun threads, and cultural critiques. They engage in pile-ons against perceived left-wing hypocrisy but also toss in self-deprecating humor or gaming/pop culture asides to lighten the mood.

Community Role and Influence
In AoSHQ's ecosystem, Duncanthrax represents the "geek-conservative" archetype: informed on tech/military topics (possibly informed by Kistner's background in C++ and open-source projects like Scream, a virtual sound card tool), yet fully immersed in the site's rowdy banter.

That movie and "Lifeforce" are totally justified and given great movie status strictly due to the superior quality of extended beautiful female nudity.

BONUS! And they just happen to be fun watches.

I have no idea, since I haven't checked. I did get three 'reviews,' though - two 3-star and one 1-star, but I have no idea what they really thought of the books, since they didn't actually write anything, just clicked on stars.

BTW, I've been cleaning up my attic and have come across (I think) a full one-sheet for DePalma's Black Dahlia. Would you care for it?

209 Fin du travail, 1886-1887.
Jules Breton

Did we have this painting before, or maybe one very similar? Doesn't matter. This is beautiful, idyllic.

It looks like a photograph, it's that good, and I would hang it.
--
The painting portrays three monumental peasant women walking back across flowering fields bathed in a warm, glowing sunset.

Lyrical Realism: Unlike some of his contemporaries (such as Jean-François Millet) who focused on the harsh, gritty exhaustion of rural labor, Breton infused his depiction with a poetic, dignified, and almost devotional grace.

Reception: The heroic and idealized presentation of agricultural workers made Breton's work immensely popular during the late 19th century, particularly among collectors in the United States and France.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States will stop providing $4 billion in aid each year to Israel in 2027 but will sell arms to its closest ally in the Middle East, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday.
