Wonder what our resident pinball junkie garrett thinks of this

10 Greatest '80s Pinball Machines, Ranked

The 1980s marked an exciting period for games and pinball, as manufacturers experimented with new gameplay mechanics, increasingly elaborate playfields, and creative themes that gave each machine its own personality. From multiball mayhem to unusual playfield designs, the decade delivered plenty of machines that challenged players to sharpen their reflexes and chase increasingly high scores.

Ranking the greatest pinball machines of the '80s means looking beyond flashy artwork and memorable themes to consider gameplay, mechanical innovation, and lasting influence on the hobby. Whether a machine changed how people played pinball or simply delivered an unforgettable arcade experience, these 10 classics represent some of the best the decade had to offer.

You here tonight, garrett??

17 100 beer cans? Pfft. Milwaukee has really lost its enthusiasm.

Queers that want to socialize in a queer environment because they hate baseball and America (and probably Trump) and want to gloat about their intolerance and use it to "virtue" signal how wonderful they are... well, if they found a spot I hope it didn't close down because it catered to only an incredibly small niche of insane clients.

And someone already started a GoFundMe (or whichever flavor of that) for RedBaron man. (I already buy Red Baron pizzas almost exclusively, so I can't buycott.)

(I could have been first, but I read the content.)

Also, today, I got a pleasant email telling me a job I recently applied for was filled by someone else.

Well, I've been in my new job for two months now, so I asked myself, "Recent?" I searched through my emails for something about when I submitted for that job.

It was at the end of July. A month before I started my new job. THREE MONTHS ago I submitted for that, and they just now said, "Oh, hey, we picked someone else, thanks for your time." I applied for, was interviewed for, pre-screened for (I-9, checking my clearance), started work, and am 4 paychecks into a job, between my application and my rejection for that other job.

So keep your head up, man!

Funny you should ask.

I'm still the underdog here in this race. That said, my opponent finally responded to all the Tax My People signs I've had put up all over the district by posting a video saying my accusation was 'misinformation', even though she said it on tape. What's better is that she started the video with her standing...in front of one of my signs(!!). Then her people started taking all of my signs from front yards in the district. Then her people posted that I'm anti-gay, anti etc etc. (my response would be that if that were the case, the town DEI group that I co-chair would have no members because they would have all resigned, but still). The DEI group is a long story, BTW.

TL;DR - I'm definitely getting in their OODA loop. I'm focusing on parts of the district that she's not showing up in, so I think I'm making a good impression. I just came from a gathering at a local country club, and that went very well. While they try to make me look like a MAGA Trumper (guilty, but that's not how I'm running my race), I'm hitting her with silly quotes she's recently said -cont-

86 Thanks for the ONT, Doof.

Glorious top photo and song by Mark Knopfler. Man, he is Celtic at times. It's in the blood of my ancestors to me. I do wish I had chosen to play the violin vs the piano. My aunt had a friend who taught violin at a college and was in the symphony. A regret in life, which are thankfully few.

The photo of the orange tipped aspens...that's their color at the very top of some mountains and we know fall has arrived with that color. The golds are far more common but no less gorgeous. Beautiful trees waiting for snow.

Question: The Red Baron guy, and I'm glad he's going to be ok...how did that punk steal $10 from him? I watched it twice. Felt really badly for him.

My third mailer just hit, and that should get Weston to give me some serious consideration on Tuesday. My race will be won or lost in Weston. Meanwhile, she and her team are focused on getting their state senate candidate over the line, so she's occupied in my town, where most of the votes *aren't*.

The next four or five days will be the hardest. If Fazio does better than expected, his coattails should help me - even if he ultimately doesn't win as CT governor. I'd say my chances now are about 50-50. Now I need to make lots and lots of phone calls to get people to the polls on Tuesday, as the people who want to early vote have probably done so already. Most Republicans will wait until Election Day to cast ballots. Time to pray.

I might not go that far on everything, but I will say...
A "tap" pay device can grab your card info from further away than you think; keep your card behind an RFID blocker until it's time to pay, and put it back promptly after.
The same goes for your phones NFC and Bluetooth. Unless you are actively using the Bluetooth for headphones or something, turn it off. And lock it down if you do need it on.
And, in general, keep your head on a swivel and know where your phone and wallet (and sidearm, if appropriate) are at all times.

RFID blocking cards and sleeves can be found on Amazon and at other sellers.

The former was kitchen sink cookies to me, while the latter was simply chocolate layer dessert. It's like Hollywood remaking movies - but with food. Four Marxists are on a boat as a storm rolls in. The first Marxist says, "I'm not afraid. We have nothing to lose but our chains. I will live to see our Great Revolution come to be!" The third Marxist says, "Comrades, the power of the people can never be defeated. I will outlive you both and celebrate our Great Revolution each year!"

We're both LGBTQ and would really like a place where we could feel safe and not have to deal with the usual cishet energy or usual Christian-nationalism vibe that tends to come with baseball around here.

Hey shit birds, I hope that you were not able to have your petty and bitchy wish fulfilled and instead you wound up in a raucous pub where the game's volume was turned up to eleven and boisterous fans were in your face all through your meal. Bonus points if one of them threw up all over you and your meal.

You see those emboldened words up there? Those noisome turds are the contributions from you and yours to the culture and you simply CANNOT SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT THEM. You are the Canada Geese of our times. You waddle about, hocking your linguistic loogies throughout our public discourse, and leave your very own greasy green turds of restricted speech and meddlesome rules throughout our physical and cultural worlds.

You are the unwelcome guests here, not the other way around. Find yourselves a place more suited to your refined sensibilities. I hear that Gaza is nice this time of year and its aerial views are stunning for the likes of you.

They do with me. I've been getting spam for something like 18 months or more, sometimes 5+ a day, about some loan application I supposedly made (but didn't). They always leave a message, because it's a pre-recorded AI script. Fortunately my voice mail (on my cell) turns a voicemail into a text and sends it to me (sometimes with hilarious typos) immediately. A quick glance tells me whether I should call back. Very few require it.

(Oh, and all of those spammers are from separate phone numbers. I don't think I've gotten a repeat yet, even with the 8xx numbers. Just one and gone on to another number - with the same script, an hour apart.)

One guy throws a ball, you have no idea how fast or slow, with a curve or just gas, rising or sinking and you have to hit it with a round stick and your brain and body have less than a second to react. It's incredibly difficult. You either can or you cannot and no DEI is going to save you.

223 Plutonium is an artifact of running a reactor iirc. A transuranic? It doesn’t occur in Nature.

Uranium was considered a waste product, mostly. Was found to make a nice yellow glaze for pottery, but once Radium was discovered, that took center stage. With mostly very, very tragic results.

By some strange geological quirk, the Shinkolobwe mine in the Congo has the richest concentration ever found. About 60% uranium ores were found. In most places, if you find 1% it was considered profitable to mine. Several thousand tons of the Shinkolobwe ore were stored in NYC at a warehouse long before anyone thought much about making bombs, Once the war department realized they needed it, they went looking for the owner. “I was wondering when you’d show up”.

After the war, the AEC offered high prices for ore in the U.S. plus a $10k bonus for new mines, setting off a uranium exploration bonanza in the 4 Corners region of the Colorado Plateau. Charlie Steen was one such beneficiary. You can still see his house at the north end of Moab, currently the Sunset Grill on the side of a cliff.

The Soviets took a completely different tack, using slave laborers in gulags. Wtetched conditions.

225 My favorite Mariners story. It was in the mid 80s, the last two weeks this season, the Mariners were like 47 games out of first place, bottom of the ninth inning, with more ushers than fans left in the Kingdom.

My friend and I were making our way towards the exit and decided we would go sit behind home plate in the TV seats and watch a couple outs. We weren't there 5 minutes and some nasty-faced usher came down and said we leave now or I'm getting the King county sheriff's. The guy in front of us said these guys are my friends and he whipped out seven season tickets. So we went and sat with him.

Minutes later three King county Sheriff showed up and gave us the choice of going to jail or to leave the stadium. It was the only time I've been physically perp walked out of a place by the cops and then tossed on to the sidewalk.

My 2nd favorite memory of the Mariners was harassing Darryl Strawberry from the left field bleacher seats with all the other drunk fools during his early cocaine period.

228 Baseball is probably the most equitable sport in the world. It makes no difference what color you are, how big or strong you are, where you came from, how many chromosomes you have.

One guy throws a ball, you have no idea how fast or slow, with a curve or just gas, rising or sinking and you have to hit it with a round stick and your brain and body have less than a second to react. It's incredibly difficult. You either can or you cannot and no DEI is going to save you.

229 I could be wrong in studying that dessert map, but the cajun cousins I knew would not bring beignets to a cookout.

Beignets are only good warm and fresh for the powdered sugar explosion, with chicory coffee at Cafe du Monde. Have been there many times since I could walk.

There are boxed mixes and all sorts of attempts, but they don't come close. All of them from NOLA to Baton Rouge could cook (aunts), and I don't recall beignets. They are also all crazy.

Drive and persistence are clearly something you have in spades. Keep it up!

My late uncle, a former pitcher for the Yankees (and others) would say that even among ball players, Ted Williams was a freak of nature. He captured and mentally stored all aspects of every pitch he was ever thrown. Wind, sunlight, weather, how old the ball itself was, the pitch, who was catching, the health of the pitcher, age, etc. EVERYTHING.

Just like pro golfers can recall every hole they've played, Williams could do that regarding every pitch.

Exactly. I don't think they are freaks, they are just phenomenal athletes.

When I was in high school we did a lot of dual sport scheduling, probably to help offset the costs. My high school baseball team traveled a lot with our cross country team. Sometimes there would be multiple schools playing in a tournament over a weekend.

I will never forget one time we had a multiple school tournament weekend and the buzz was all about this one kid who was supposed to be really good at cross country. We were like, who gives a shit, like being really good at jerking off.

Turns out he was really, really good at running long distance. He beat everyone and then sat in the stands to cheer on his high school baseball team before the 2nd place finisher even came out of the woods.

Alberto Salazar. You might have heard of him.

We won the baseball game. 2nd in the tournament.

312 215 We just watched a 1996 modern Western (sort of) called Lone Star, a mystery-drama set in a '96 Texas border town, with Chris Cooper, brief appearances in flashbacks by Matthew McConaghey and Kris Kristofferson, and Elizabeth Pena. It ranges back and forth in time between the late '50s and the late '90s, yet is easy to follow, and features sharply etched characters and a good mystery plot as well.

I've *never* understood how lemons became so popular. IF there was a "vote one off the island" moment, I'd vote lemon off the island over lime. There's very little that lemon makes better. And with most dishes, there's no reason to involve lemon or lime.

Actually, Uecker played during a time when pitchers dominated and batting averages were low across the board. Also, a team often trades batting average for defensive skills in its middle infielders. Martin Maldonado had a 12-year career despite batting .203 because he was an excellent handler of pitchers.

Re plutonium. Pu-244 has a half-life of around 81 million years, long enough to be primordial. That is, it was present in the material that formed the solar system, and should still be in here in some small amounts, but it's current a little below the threshold of detection.

They've found its decay signature in meteorites, confirming it was present primordially. They have discovered some relatively high concentrations of it in Pacific seafloor samples, and it's origin is interstellar, and the age is about 100 million years. 100 million years ago, the solar system passed through some dust cloud containing it.

Pu-244 is about the heaviest element that can last enough to stick around. Heavier elements can be produced by astrophysical processes, but their half-lives are so small, they don't last long.

334 I can see a few of the 'Ettes doing this:

My sister is an emergency room nurse and likes to tell stories about one of her coworkers who always has a smart answer ready for any situation.

A notorious problem in the ER is people who come in for things that are not actually emergencies and then complain when they're put at a low priority.

During a very busy day, this nurse is hurrying through the waiting room and is stopped by a man.

Man: "Hello, nurse? This is taking too long! I've been waiting for almost two hours!"

Nurse: "Congratulations! Good for you!"

Man: "What's that supposed to mean?"

Nurse: It means you're not in danger of dying any time soon. See you in another couple of hours!"

These are the same assholes that don't pull over for an ambulance with lights and siren.

I went to the ER this summer, in an ambulance, because I split my head open in a fall and really needed someone else to drive while I bled. I specifically asked to not use the siren, because it wasn't going to get worse, and why piss off all the neighbors if I don't have to?

But if an ambulance has sirens and lights, get the fuck off the road. Seconds matter.

So I make cobblers and crisps, and wet bottomed Shoo fly pies.
I will make a rough pastry crust when I make a pot-pie, but a crust isn't as important, and I have the dodge of putting anise flavored rum when I try to make a fruit pie, but they always seem to turn out with the texture of butter and anise flavored sand.

357 Pretty much done with the 12-volt wiring for the little Honda generator. Made a faceplate, that provides a mount for the circuit breaker and a pair of binding posts. To that I attached a piece of perf board that mounts the filter choke, two capacitors, and the little IC regulator board. Mounted pilot lamp next to the ignition toggle switch. Most of the interconnecting wiring done. Will hook it up to the machine tomorrow, start it, and see if I can tweak the regulator to put out 13.2 volts. That is a safe level for the HEI module, and should provide a float charge for an AGM battery.
