Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered by Ella Fitzgerald For the second time in a row, something a little different! "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" is usually shortened to "Libiamo," and it is one of the great and popular arias in operatic history. The opera -- La Traviata -- which means "The Wayward," or "The Wayward Woman," was written by a guy named Joe Green, and with that pedestrian a name, of course he is going to write about drinking! I first saw it in college. Had no idea what to expect, but after the first time my friends and I went to see it again one or two times more. Never dressed up. Might have brought rice, I cant remember. I just watched it again on my own after Tim Curry died. Its still a funny parody of old science fiction (of which Im also watching a bit more of now) and fun music. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at October 31, 2026 08:18 PM (kYmoU) 31
Libiamo is a wonderful and fun aria. UNLESS you are a bass in the chorus. The bass line is basically going oom-pah-pah to a waltz rhythm the whole damn time. Except for a very few basso profundo roles, Joe Green, that Italian SOB, didn't like deep voices. Probably included a few to meet union demands. He even made Otello, a huge Moorish warrior, a tenor. Sheesh!
Not that I have an opinion on the matter. Posted by: JTB at October 31, 2026 08:20 PM (yTvNw) 32

I don't know when you were last back but in the last number of years so much gentrification has gone on Newport has become a completely different place. When I went back briefly for my grandmother's funeral in 1987, I almost got lost a couple of times and many of the places I knew were gone. The house my parents bought for about 11 grand in 1957 is now valued at over half a million last I looked and it isn't in the fashionable part of town.
