A local station used to run a Halloween Dance commercial. It's not good. Coincidentally, a commenter, maybe nurse ratched, linked this in the comments today. But I had already had it in this post. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac on the back end of our 'hood. No kids come back here because there are a couple of prime streets where everyone goes. We're out over on the good streets with our young ones anyway so we put a bowl of candy out at the end of the drive. The last couple of years we didn't even get the courtesy of a teenager coming to rob what's left of the bowl at the end of the night. So I end up having to work off a lot of calories...

Aw, it got dusty in here. A small deaf pittie was dumped here in 2020. Toby loved her, and she loved life here for the short span she had. Taught me some patience dealing with her crazy energy. But we were not set up to handle a deaf dog. She ran out on the road and got hit by a truck. If the truck hadn't got her she was likely to have gotten a fatal kick to the head from a horse. She thought it was great fun to grab their tails and enjoy the brief flight. I was amazed they tolerated her doing that.

My sister just jeers at me and says I treat the dough too hard, and it won't matter what shortening I use if I overwork pie crust. I tried hot water pie crust like the English make, but it turned out like hardtack.
I might try leaf lard, but then again I might follow the instructions because the recipe I have is good for most people. My failures are often just self inflicted problems. Posted by: Kindltot at October 30, 2026 08:13 PM (rbvCR) 111

Kindltot, do you let the dough rest in the fridge for a bit before you roll it out? It helps the flour hydrate evenly. Just wrap it up. An hour is fine, or overnight. You'll have to let it warm a bit in the counter before you roll it.

Ah, I don't use oil or butter. And yes, the fat should be very cold, worked into the flour and salt quickly until pea-sized crumbs, then enough ice water mixed in with a fork until it all holds together. Then flatten into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, refrigerate a bit.

Kindltot, have you tried using a food processor if you have one? This is the quickest and easiest way and allows you to get the crumbs fairly even. Then you drizzle in the ice water and just pulse until it holds together. They always warn about not adding too much water but you have to be sure you add enough.
Posted by: boo-bell at October 30, 2026 08:28 PM (uyuYG) 137
I have a tip about pie crust scraps which may or not be new to you. If you layer the scraps (rather than scrunching them up in a ball), you keep the gluten going the same in them all, and you can roll them out as though they were fresh dough. Scrunching them into a ball gets the gluten going every which way, which makes the dough tough.

To answer my own question, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had a parliament ("Sejm") in which any member could not only veto the current legislation under discussion, but could repeal any previous legislation and even dissolve parliament, just by saying Nie pozwalam!” (“I do not allow!” This worked about as well as you would expect. "Tic Tok Witches vs Stupid Old Witch" I never had many boyfriends but I also never put a hex on them. We just mutually stopped dating. Or I stopped dating them and they figured it out and life went on. So weird. Talked to youngest son and he and DIL have a cold from the baby, who is a Toddler Flamingo for Halloween. She won't give two hoots about trick or treating and will go to sleep in her stroller. She thought her 1st birthday was pretty weird until the cake part, which she ate with both fists in complete nirvana. Based on the way she walks I think she should have been a baby Penguin. She's so cute. Her big sister, blonde like our side of the family, was almost bald at this age. This one has a ton of hair and DIL puts two pig tails on top of her head like antenna to get the hair out of her eyes. When she naps one sticks straight up. This hairdo matches her personality.
