A very prickly porcupine would like to be heard now.

A horse opted out of the rat race.

Great Danes do not know their own size. Which is good, because if they knew their own size, they would eat us.

Eagle lands a big fish. Or rather, he "skies" the fish.

Some quality sea otter content.

Sea wolves are not just a cool nickname for pirates.

A truck driver decides to save a life.

This is a sad video about a grieving orca who carried her dead calf for 17 days and for over 1,600 miles.

The main theme to The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, live in concert.

Cat: I will remain still as a I prepare to pounce

They're kind of cute, and just go about their business.

My big fear is the skunks in the neighborhood. I was taking a walk and absently rolled past what I took for a black squirrel and then realized my mistake as it turned and took a couple of skips to open up the distance.

The deer around here are so tame that a doe on the bike path tried to stare me down rather than run. Weird.

H. Beam Piper knew his history better than a lot of history professors. His Future History is loaded with considering past events as projected into the future. Jerry Pournelle who actually met and talked with Piper before Piper's untimely demise had rights to do stories in Piper's TFH universe but quickly figured out along with John Carr that the sheer amount of historical research needed would simply be too much.

Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, especially if you like firearms, is a great book to read if you have never read Piper before.

Frankly, I like Piper a lot more as an author than Isaac Asimov in the future history business. Piper's characters had a lot more life in them as well as humor than Asimov's.

155 Hmmm. ace had the 60 Minutes thread and I had AI give ratings. This was on Variety.

"It’s not surprising to see ratings at “60 Minutes” slump when CBS doesn’t air a strong football game before the start of the show. But the program’s performance on Sunday, which lacked exactly that kind of NFL lead-in, is alarming nonetheless.

The fifth episode of this season’s cycle of the venerable CBS newsmagazine drew only 5.64 million viewers, one of the smallest audiences for the program in years, according to data from Nielsen. The show captured a mere 558,000 among viewers between 25 and 54, the demographic coveted most by advertisers in news programming."

Meet the Press too had 80% plus of their audience over age 54. Let me check about one more thing.

Chat says if people fall asleep, leave the room or whatever, they are still counted. I leave the tv on all the time for noise so these crappy news ratings are even worse. Sweet.

Space Viking was what Pournelle and Carr thought was the most dense distillation of history employed in a short story that meant an incredible act to follow. Carr said as much as much of the burden on the research to write a successor to that story fell to him.

Piper's "The Edge of a Knife" short story actually has a character predicting many of the future events that Piper had sketched out for his TFH series as a professor who gets declared insane due to him unwittingly revealing insights to the future in his class.

That one has a better chance to be Piper referring to Laumer. His Retief stories started in the early 60s.

There is a set of stories where Robert Bloch and H P Lovecraft, who corresponded some introduced each other into a Lovecrafty story and killed each other.

He was, and had talks with Piper. Pournelle was going to write on in the Sword Worlds universe but he had other things he wanted to do instead.
Pournelle had a far different voice than Piper, and much harsher view of humanity. The Mote in God's Eye universe was closer, but it was much more rigid.

Michael Kurland wrote some Piper pastiches based in part on some fragmentary plotting notes, but it was more of an extension of the notes more than a polished story. Kurland did have a better prose style than Pournelle though.

Possibly. Laumer's Retief series is hilarious but there is an interesting novella early on (Diplomat at Arms) that is Retief at the end of his career instead of the beginning and it is much less comedic. Magnan comes off much worse in this one as a despicably evil bureaucrat. Probably Laumer knew this and moved his future Retief stories to be much lighter in tone and substance.

266 Actually no. We have a proxy: a list of pro and anti Vietnam War SF signatures 1968. It was more anti, as the petition-floater expected...
...but pro put in a strong showing. Most names are what one might expect but there are surprises.
positronchicago.com/2016/03/sff-authors-vietnam-war.html

MZB was the largest surprise, for me anyway. On the other side maybe Bradbury and Leiber.
Posted by: 88C+u

Of big sci fi classic names that I recognize, about 2:1 against Vietnam by my figures. Alex Panshin writing about this time to 'good reviews' wrote Heinlein in Dimension which was a hatchet job on the man and his work. Published in 1968 ironically.

267 Sundiver is a murder mystery novel.

Keepiru, "I never said who I would feed you to." Got both versions of this book and really can't tell the difference.

Uplift War is all about guerilla warfare, literally with Tymbrini tricks.

Second trilogy I hardly remember anything from them.

Bunch and Cole do a comedic version of the A Team in sci fi in their Star Risk Inc. series. Last book in that series had Bunch's part finished by a family friend as he died during the writing of it.

Posted by: whig at October 27, 2026 09:31 PM (E4rtv)

271 FWIW, both Cole and Bunch were writers on the original Battlestar Galactica series among other Glen Larson projects as tv scriptwriters.

279 I will be glad when Halloween is over. I dislike the huge skeletons on the road to the high school, but they are not nearly as bad as the gruesome disembodied heads on the gate outside the fancy house going of town. 281 Never did get around to Silverberg's expansions of the Asimov stories. Didn't see the need for the expansions, so I passed them by.

He's no longer writing fiction (91 -- he doesn't need to), and I saw part of an interview at some convention from early this year; he looked pretty frail. 91 will do that to you. But for my money he bought his way into Writers' Heaven with Dying Inside and The Book of Skulls. YMMV.

There's a Joe Haldeman that never got the press that The Forever War did; it's a mainstream novel called 1968 and it's a terrific piece of work. Again YMMV.

290 Bunch and Cole screenplays and other TV work list, From wiki.

"Bunch and Cole began writing for television in the late 1970s, eventually selling more than 150 scripts together over the course of their partnership. Working under executive producer Glen A. Larson, the pair contributed two episodes to Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1980) and co-wrote the pilot of The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo with Larson. Their other television credits included The Incredible Hulk, Quincy, M.E., Magnum, P.I., B.J. and the Bear, The Rockford Files, Hunter, The A-Team, The Smurfs, and Walker, Texas Ranger. They wrote the A-Team episode "Pure-Dee Poison" (1984) and served as story editors on the supernatural drama Werewolf.

Bunch and Cole, who had not previously worked on Battlestar Galactica, were hired as two of three story editors on its sequel series, Galactica 1980.[ According to the pair, they had not sought the position; they said a Universal Television executive threatened to bar them from future work at the studio if they declined the assignment."

I recall a story a few years ago, about white hats examining a hacked password file, which showed lots of users with proper, random, every-key-on-the-keyboard passwords.

Then they noticed a lot of users with the same random, every-key-on-the-keyboard password.

Which turned out to be the 8-bit representation of 密码 ..... Chinese for "password."
