Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - October 27, 2026![]() Howdy Hordelings! The Tuesday ONT has arrived. On time, as always. Open thread, as always. Ready to be whelmed? [I won't be on until late this evening. Photo and mystery click are clues as to where I am and why I'll be late!] Route 66 Turns 100 What's left of it anyway The rise and fall of Route 66 In the 1940s and '50s, Route 66 was one of America's most popular highways, driving business to small towns from Chicago to Santa Monica. But today, the road and its people have been largely forgotten. Ghost towns, empty motels, and abandoned gas stations line its path. Chief correspondent Abby Narishkin grew up along the road. In celebration of its 100th anniversary, she drove down the old route herself to visit the people and businesses still keeping this Americana legacy alive.Video segment at the link *** Keeping "The Mother Road" alive This motel is keeping the history of Route 66 alive with its wigwam rooms U.S. Highway 66, also known as “the Mother Road,” was built in 1926 to connect Chicago to Los Angeles. Historians say Route 66 became a lifeline during the Great Depression, a major corridor during World War Two, and later a symbol of freedom for postwar families traveling west. As the interstate system expanded, it gradually replaced Route 66, leaving many mom-and-pop stops behind. But the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona is one of the businesses still standing along the historic highway. *** “It’s America, it’s amazing, they don’t write songs about I-10, they write songs about Route 66,” Richards said. Richards said fewer places like the Wigwam Motel remain today. “These we’re losing more of these places -- we’re not really gaining them,” Richards said.Video segment at that link too. As for the well known song about Route 66, I'm partial to this version *** The "anti-Route 66"? Route 66’s unsung alternative, with historic inns and misty mountains ![]() Sometimes travelling through the sugar-maple forests of Vermont feels faintly absurd. I was canoeing across a blue-green lake, deep in the Green Mountains, in the pearl glow of sunset. My paddle sang through the water as flutelike birdsong filled the silence. Blue jays whistled. Damselflies hovered. This was prime black bear habitat, but I saw no signs. Instead, a bass breached the surface. Zoom out to a drone’s-eye view — above the water, above the beaver dam, above my lakeshore log cabin at Sterling Ridge Resort in Jeffersonville — and you’d see that there was no one else around *** Five days earlier, in late June, I had flown to Boston, picked up a rental car and driven 150 miles northwest into the Green Mountain State, the mercury nudging 30C [86F], to begin my journey along Route 100, which would eventually end up here. I was chasing the most wholesome road trip possible, one with historic inns, misty mountains and dairy farms reached by slow, radio-static country roads — an anti-Route 66, if you like. It’s easy to find that here, plus hippy-dippy liberalism, fierce small-town identity and an almost suspicious amount of cheese. We all pine to hide in the woods sometimes, and I wanted the jazzy moo of dairy cows, the burble of waterfalls and nowhere much to be. If Vermont is beautiful in summer, I could only imagine how spectacular the state’s sorbet-shaded foliage, abundance of pumpkin farms and explosive mountain light would be in leaf-peeping season.Nice photos at the link. My birthday is rare. Which makes sense. When I worked in the newborn nursery and NICU we were always busy in August/September from the Christmas and New Year's babies arriving. Also if there was a hurricane in September, we would be busy in June. Storms predict not only dumps of snow or rain, but 9mo later a lot of new babies. I don't have any idea what a slug sandwich is. All the common days are June-October, implying that people have nothing better to do in the winter months than get it on. And I didn't realize induced or c-section "planned" births were that common. So many people intentionally not having kids on the holidays, or on the 13th of the month. But a big spike in the last two weeks of the year, minus Christmas day, for the tax write-off. ---- Words have meaning, and we just push back on this stupidity. A "sandwich" has bread that encloses the other ingredients. We can debate what "bread" means but we can all agree that potato skin divided in half is NOT "bread". Posted by: Crusader at October 27, 2026 10:29 PM (Cjcf6) 93

Cadillac Ranch was depressing. It was probably interesting when it was new but allowing it to degenerate into a spray can graffiti hell was a mistake. Everybody wants to make "their mark" and make someone else's art about themselves. It's shallow and narcissistic. And depressing. Did I mention depressing?
Posted by: Oddbob at October 27, 2026 10:16 PM (vTZFs) I saw it back in May. It is fun to view. I did not indulge in the spray painting. The paint is over a half inch thick in some places. The break chips of the thick paint off, and slab and polish it to make costume jewelry. Kind of cool, I thought. Consider it to be an audience-participation art installation, minus all the pretentiousness that usually attends "art installations". And I didn't realize induced or c-section "planned" births were that common. Posted by: mikeski at October 27, 2026 10:16 PM (VHUov) Our 2nd boys birthday was May 28th. Because of a scheduled c-section (due to his big headed brother and father), he was to be delivered a week early. One aunt had a bday of May 20, an uncle, May 22nd. So his Mama chose his birthday as May 21st. They try to do this to make sure their lungs are mature. Now they have better technology and, heck, every baby has a few ultrasounds. In 1984, unless medically needed, insurance didn't pay. So both boys were surprises. I wanted a boy the first time and never set my heart on a girl the second. A healthy baby boy was wonderful and the only thing I wanted both times. To select a holiday or whatever is a bit weird, but I guess I did similar so he didn't share a birthday. Plus his aunt is weird. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at October 27, 2026 10:53 PM (hzuYO) 145
Worked for many years in the SoCal, Arizona, Utah part of the world. Made the drive on I-40 many times going or coming from back east. The freeway largely followed and replaced Rt. 66. My girlfriend and I once made the detour from Flag up along 66 and then down to Kingman. This was back in the early 90's. I'm sure it was more lively back in the 30's and 40's, but it was deader than dead when we saw it. Lonely and sad. A precursor to every small town bypassed by the modern highways later on.

Just re-watched The Man From U.N.C.L.E. film from 2015. No, it's not like the series, and yet it is. The two leads, one dark and American, one blond and Russian, who make a great spy team. Exciting camera work, funny dialog in the right places, some clever plot twists, neat editing with the split-screen scenes -- and it had a fine setup for a sequel that sadly has never been made.
If you'd never seen the show and know nothing about it, the movie makes a great Cold War spy thriller. If you are a long-time fan, the similarities outweigh the big differences. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 27, 2026 11:00 PM (wzUl9) 164

For 74 and 75 Reed and Malloy drove a four door Matador, as AMC sold a lot of police cars to LAPD. Malloy got an awful looking 2 door Matador as his personal car, a weird Mustardy color. He drove it to Reed's house to show it to him and drive Jim to work. You can tell that Milner was unhappy with the hideous car. Well, I did some more assembly work on the little Honda generator, and it runs fine! Could not get the ignition module to run on the 12-volt battery-charging output of the generator; maybe the circuit breaker is kaput. But an angle grinder plugged into the 120 volt outlet ran fine. I shut off the fuel valve, and let it run its little carburetor dry. The mended fuel tank does not leak. And I took the muffler off, and checked the spark arrestor. Perfect, it was.

Who do they think they are fooling? Duh. "This bag is full to the top with air chips!" They know we'll buy them anyway at times. Speaking of times, I saw that guy Bongingo (sp?no care!) in the UK DM says to "stock up." Like the UK govt told their people yesterday: beans and diapers...which make sense. If you are in a nuke war and eat a lot of canned beans you are going to need diapers. We lived 30yrs in FL and are always sort of stocked up. Then le covide and more. We do need bottled water and, by golly, we will have TP. I think there will be some boom booms after the midterms, no matter who wins in Iran. However, I don't see that as the reason. Perhaps the battery charging output is not constant DC?
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 27, 2026 11:41 PM (XeU6L) Well, it's single-phase AC through a bridge rectifier. But I just realized why it didn't work. The 12 volt output floats; not grounded. Ignition module is grounded. I only connected the (+) wire. Doh! I will re-check it tomorrow. Now I don't know if the 12 volt output will deliver enough juice at cranking speed to fire the ignition. Somehow, I doubt it. But if it will run itself, once started, then I can get away with maybe 8 double-A cells in holders, to provide a couple of amps at 12 volts for the few seconds it takes to crank it up. The air is put in the bag to protect the chips. You buy the chips based on weight and due to Archimedes’s principle the air inside weighs nothing (if weighed in air). If you had bought a bag absolutely stuffed with chips and very little air, you would find it’s all crumbs before you got it home.

It's about 46 au distance now, and they've got a half-assed orbit for it, but high error bars. When they get around to it, which may take a while, they'll turn Hubble and JWST on it, and will get the orbit pinned down. And, it will most likely have a moon(let), which Hubble can easily see, and that will determine the mass. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 28, 2026 12:33 AM (w6EFb) 279

I just got to reading about the next leap in atomic clock tech -- the optical atomic clock. This will use visible light frequencies rather than microwave frequencies. This will get the precision to 1/10^18 to 1/10^19. At this level, the clocks will not also see changes in tick rate due to the sun and Moon tidal field and the earth's orbital variations, but to tiny shifts in the local mass. Get a heavy rain and the ground gets saturated with water? The additional mass will slow the clocks. High pressure system moves in? The additional mass will show up in tick rate. Magma moving around underneath? They will see it. This is going to open up whole new avenues of geodesy, using just clocks. Time itself. They're almost of the verge of something profound with these new time precision. At that 10^-18/19 level optical atomic clocks across the globe can act as low frequency gravitational wave detectors. This has profound cosmological purpose. While with light, you can only look back so far, absolute limit somewhere under 400K year limit of cosmic time. The gravitational wave background, roughly analgous to the CMB, can go back to the very beginning. They've already confirmed this "gravitional wave hum" exists, it's just getting all the different signals separated out that is the problem. These clocks will be able to do some of that. This should be able to see an "inflation" signal. And the nature of the waves will shed light on how that worked. I expect we're going to see some amazing cosmological discoveries made.
