Wednesday Night ONT - October 28, 2026 [TRex]

10282026-pumpkinsvangogh1.jpg

Good evening Horde! The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. The bar is open and fully stocked. Step up and place your order. JQ has the bar keys, so be nice.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

If you're a troll, go away.

This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

ONT Debate Society

I know what you're thinking: "It is almost Halloween and I have opinions on candy. Wouldn't it be great if there was somewhere on the interweb that I could defend the honor of my favorites and rain scorn on those with incorrect opinions on their favorites?" Yeah...anyway, I gathered all the names of all the candy I could think of or find on the interweb and put them into a virtual randomizer. The results are below.

1) Reese's Pieces - after Mars turned down the product placement opportunity for M&Ms, ET made Reece's Pieces famous in the 1982 film. They had only been introduced in 1978. The candy color mix is reportedly a mix of orange (50%), brown (25%), and yellow (25%).

2) Reese's Peanut Butter Cups - these consistently rank at or near the top by sales volume and revenue. They are the top candy by ounces sold and the top seller in 40 of 51 states plus Washington, D.C. Pretty good for a candy that was created in 1928. Remember the famous commercial: "You got chocolate in my peanut butter!/ You got peanut butter in my chocolate!"

3) Baby Ruth - Snickers is the top selling candy bar in the US but Baby Ruth is the plucky underdog with a loyal following. The official company claim is that it was named after Ruth Cleveland, the daughter of President Grover Cleveland. Others have plausibly claimed it was inspired by Babe Ruth, the baseball player.

Baby Ruth bars are similar to Goo Goo Clusters from Nashville. Baby Ruth comes in bar form and Goo Goo Clusters feature more marshmallow. If you like one, you'll likely enjoy the other.

4) Crunch (the bar formerly known as Nestle Crunch) - a Hershey's chocolate bar is good, but adding crisped rice makes the "crunch." The origin story dates to Nestle's factory in Fulton, New York in 1938 when an employee added Rice Crispies to a batch of chocolate at home. Nestle sold the business line in 2018 (including Crunch, Butterfinger, Nerds, Baby Ruth and others), so that is why it is currently known only as Crunch.

Honorable mention for the Nestle Alpine White Chocolate bar with almonds which (I think) was the first widely sold white chocolate candy bar. The interweb says it was discontinued in 1994.

5) Twizzlers - The National Licorice Company was based in Brooklyn, New York. It was formed in 1902 by the merger of Young & Smylie (itself founded in Brooklyn in 1845) with two other licorice makers. Twizzlers were originally introduced in 1929 as black licorice. Fruit-flavored versions (especially strawberry and cherry) were added in the 1960s and eventually overtook black licorice as the best-sellers. The classic red "Twists" most people picture today are strawberry-flavored and do not contain actual licorice extract. Hershey acquired ownership in 1977 which gave Twizzlers marketing and distribution muscle.

6) M&Ms - milk chocolate M&Ms were introduced in 1941 and still outsell peanut M&Ms which were introduced in 1954. M&Ms does not publish enough specifics to know the breakdown between them. M&M stands for Mars & Murrie. The name comes from the two men who created the candy: Forrest Mars Sr. (son of Mars company founder Frank C. Mars) and Bruce Murrie (son of Hershey Chocolate president William F.R. Murrie). Mars bought out Murrie's share around 1949 (war-time chocolate rationing ended and candy sales and distribution grew). The single printed "m" on each piece was added in 1950.

***

I asked the interweb for well known local candies in the US. Can anyone confirm these?

Arizona - Cactus Candy - Pink gummies made with prickly pear cactus juice by the long-running Cactus Candy Company.

California - Abba-Zaba - Thick vanilla taffy with peanut butter center (Annabelle Candy Co.)

Florida - Coconut Patties - Chocolate-covered shredded coconut (Anastasia Confections and others)

Idaho - Idaho Spud - Cocoa marshmallow center, chocolate coating, coconut; potato-shaped bar from Idaho Candy Co. (Boise, since 1918 ).

Iowa - Twin Bing - Cherry cream balls coated in peanut-chocolate "hash" (Palmer Candy Co.)

Kansas - Valomilk - Chocolate cups filled with runny marshmallow cream

Kentucky - Blue Monday - Thin chocolate-covered pulled cream (taffy-like) from Ruth Hunt Candies.

Louisiana - Pralines - Classic pecan-and-sugar confections

***

Mandatory Maiden

I recently heard someone the interweb suggest that "Caught Somewhere in Time" was a good introduction to Iron Maiden for a newbie. I can't find the video, so I can't validate the rationale but I think it was something along the lines that the song echoes a lot of signature Maiden tempo changes and galloping bass line. The subject matter is also less aggressive than other Maiden songs. Yes, it is a little more synth and a little less gritty than earlier work and it is a lengthy piece, but interesting suggestion. If I was asked, I probably would have gone with "Wasted Years."

What would you suggest? Remember - the question is not the best, most well-known or most typical but the best introduction for a beginner.

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called bigstackD casting. A recurring theme of this feature is my endless fascination that a relatively niche interest - if done well - can find and sustain an audience. Tonight's channel is a great example. It is a YouTube channel dedicated to showing recovery and casting from scrap metal. That's it.

This is one guy in Australia that dumpster dives and visits the scrap yard for trash to melt. He melts almost anything and casts copper, brass, aluminium, silver, and more. Sometimes the end result is a coin or bar. Other times the end result is sculpture.

The intrigue each week is seeing scrap like a compressor or outboard motor or motorcycle and then seeing how much metal he can recover from it. Some lots are things like padlocks, aluminum cans, and bullet casings. He shows each project but keeps track over time as well.

Zero commentary or graphics. No music. All sounds - including the furnace - are natural. He has 1.56 million subscribers and video views in the hundreds of thousands and millions.

They got called out for this a few years ago by one of the Reese family. The Hershey CEO sheepishly admitted the crappification of the product and vowed to restore the original standards.

30 Well, I found something AI is good at. I asked it to list occurrences where a gray Hyundai Tuscan was used to steal ATM machines and had a NJ Plate.

Besides the Pittsburgh one....another occurrence took place in Fairfield NJ (unsuccessful). And, another in Worcester, Mass. Same type vehicle. NJ plates...and they got away that time.

Apparently, this is an organized crime issue. And, they use stolen Hyundai's because they don't have an engine immobilizer (thus a walk in the park to steal).

33 Neighbor texted me yesterday, that they're going hunting this weekend so their boys won't be treat or treating this weekend.

I'd already bought candy: special stuff for the boys, plus a bag of mixed goodies for anyone else that may show up.

So, I bagged a bunch of it and took over to the mom today. She said the boys were slightly bummed about missing out on candy, although they were excited to go hunting, and will doubtless appreciate the treats.

Wonderful neighbors. Great people.

48 Twix or Kit Kats for me as favorites. Hated Almond Joy.

We used to give out normal size bars and a huge bowlful or two. Very popular. I got tired of kids taller than me showing up with a lame pillowcase. Plus kids and parents driving up the mountain for the good stuff. We are done.

Most of the kids on the street are older now and we are bah humbug. Turn our porch light out and hide with most of the lights off watching tv til 8pm.

We do give stuff to our grands as we love them...not much candy, though as they get tons trick or treating.

It's been awhile since Halloween was on a Saturday. This one will be rocking! I remember one in college and always, always a kegger and total insanity. No one died, dropped a pitcher of beer, or harfed at my keggers. I don't know how but it's true.

I don't put out our fall wreaths til Nov. 1st due to the potential thug issue being mad at me for not answering the doorbell. We did our part for a decade, plus 30yrs in FL, and are retired from stranger's children.

79 @NBCNews

Although Brazil's presidential election took place more than 4,000 miles away, the baseless conspiracy theory that it was stolen raced through the American right-wing media.
------

Does NOBODY at NBC have ANY journalistic integrity? Lol, yeah I know--that made you laugh! Just the same, let's explore the errors in this less-than-100-characters tweet:

* "Although Brazil's presidential election took place more than 4,000 miles away...": You're NBC FRICKING NEWS--are you pretending that your entire organization can't perform accurate and detailed research regarding something "more than 4,000 miles away"? What the hell? From AI:

AI Overview
The longest road distance between two cities/points in the contiguous (continental) United States stretches approximately 3,689 miles...

So NBC basically says that if it didn't take place in the continental United States that THEY aren't competent to report on it and nobody else can either???

* "...the baseless conspiracy theory that it was stolen raced through the American right-wing media". How could a story that isn't even 36 hours old be declared "baseless" by a supposed media outlet?

102 In junior high and HS at school, 50 in each class, total of 200 in HS, we had a "store" for recess. We could buy candy and Coke and other stuff. I think pencils but no one bought those.

A friend in junior high got a Reese's Peanut Butter cup with a worm in it and I haven't eaten one since. She also used to buy a packet of peanuts to put in her Coke. I never figured that out. I got a Coke and chips.

A junor high or HS kid ran the place behind a half door and were fine, upstanding students, unlike me.

Special Ed shared the junior high bldg with us, which made it more exciting.

One guy who had googly eyes rode the school bus with us. Older and pervy. Lived on a chicken farm and often had chicken poop on his arm on the bus, which was hideous.

My friend's older college brother drove one year and Charles had to sit on the front seat behind the driver. He still tried to look up our dresses and we'd yell at Jimmy (driver) and he'd wearily tell Charles to turn around. It was hard to tell which eyeball was actually looking cause they rolled around.

I'm sorry this tangented out of the candy bar discussion. Reese's cups brought the memories back.

In Japan Kobe (and not just that city) has amazing confectionery companies, usually with German or Russian names. European-style chocolate with Japanese precision and packaging. 118 The Big Twelve decided to make its life more difficult:

"The Big 12's conduct policy at athletic events will now include an automatic minimum $100,000 fine and a warning after a first confirmed incident. A second incident at the same game will result in an in-game penalty, such as a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty in football or a two-shot technical foul in basketball."

How stupid. We're now affecting the outcome of an athletic event because 1 or 10 or 100 people in the crowd want to shout something that was the not-polite equivalent of "Screw the Mormans"? Really, are entire athletic departments supposed to be on alert about what their crowds might chant?

I can't wait to the completely-unpredictable outcome where a berth in the college football playoffs is more or less determined because 25 college kids chanted something and a penalty or foul was called.

Is EVERYONE in college sports just *retarded*?

Don't know. Japan I think just has one store in Tokyo.

Just before I left the east coast for 'splodier climes, See's had started to rent empty mall store space and have stores open from Black Friday to Christmas. Just pre-packed boxes, not choose-your-own. Imagine they did pretty well. And airports in the west used to have See's kiosks.

The See's factory in SF is near the airport, and even closer to the national cemetery. Some time I'm going to drop by that location on the way to see Nimitz's grave at the cemetery (and Turner's, and Spruance's, and Lockwood's, I think, all together).

Stopped by that factory on a ski trip once and saw a tanker (spotless) pull up and connect a hose to the huge "Milk Chocolate" connection out front.

You are a sweetheart. For some shifts in hospitals that might serve as dinner for most of the staff.

In the ED someone would make popcorn, put it in a bedpan in a kitchen, and we'd go to town as we passed by. I always liked the vessel chosen.

If an ED doc bought pizza on a horrible night we were like honeybadgers. There was no time for dinner as it was that insane. I look back now and honestly don't know how we did it. I'd still trust any of them with my life or those I loved. It was a great experience for five years and I was honored to be a part of that group. Some saw me years later and about knocked me down with hugs when I appeared to say hi.

Not a soda pop, but Aldi's has these flavored water bottles. Not the squirt ones, but regular drinks, around 32oz. One's a tropical fruit flavor, and another is cranberry. Both are pretty good, but your mileage may very.

199 With regard to local candy, Chicago has Frangos, which are chocolate-covered mints. For years, they were sold by the late Marshall Field's. I don't know if they're still available; but they were awfully good.

In Ontario (yes, I know, Canada, but bear with me), the Laura Secord chain of candy shops sells something called "almond bark", which is a slab of white chocolate with lots of almonds embedded in it. If you're a fan of white chocolate, like I am (which of course makes me a racist), almond bark is outstanding: I have to stay away from it, or I'll eat myself sick.

And I have to mention my wife, the lovely and accomplished Annalucia, who makes a version of almond joys but with dark rather than milk chocolate. Outstanding! But available only to our friends and family.

I yelled for my dude, no answer. He had my phone downstairs doing something to it so I had no phone nearby like I usually do.

Our house is very big and you can't hear each other, even on the same floor as the walls or thick (I guess). I threw on my nightgown to go find him, thinking he was outside. About that time he wandered inside with me yelling on the deck.

He'd gone out to check his tomatoes, without his phone, & didn't turn off the burglar alarm. I started getting texts from the alarm company *just* before they called the law. I wanted to kill him and tell the alarm people, yes, come get him as he's burgled my brain this morning.

I guess he sashayed outside completely oblivious. Which he's never done before. He was apparently downstairs in the basement & had to see his tomatoes while I was upstairs. He may soon have a leash if this happens again.

The police would have arrived to see me po'd in my nightgown with wet hair & him yammering about his tomatoes.

When I moved from California to New York umpty years ago, I discovered to my horror that you could not get either of those candy bars, or the others that Annabelle made (Rocky Road and Look), on the East Coast. A West Coast friend shipped me an Annabelle assortment for Christmas, but they arrived all melted and yucky, having gotten too warm in transit and leaked out of their wrappers and into the box itself. The same friend later sent me a refrigerated shipment of another assortment, and they were good, but not good enough to spend a day's salary on to procure! Looks like these candy bars still exist. I woke to a text from my bro that our 95yr old mother was going to not need sitters once she's home from rehab and the glue repair of a fractured lumbar vertebra. Her royal decree. She's alert and was living independently. I said, nope to this. A case manager also said nope and that was a relief as she will have sitters the rest of her life at home.

Posted by: NCKate

I nearly got in trouble last week for talking to someone's cat. I ride my bike over the same 12 mile route about 3 times a week. I always carry dog and cat treats and have some steady customers when they are outside. The owners are fine with it. There's a pretty tuxedo cat who was always skittish and would run when I got close, but this time it was laying out by the end of her driveway and I stopped to talk to it and see if it wanted a treat. I was in the road and not on the property. Just then the lady of the house drives up with a scowl on her face saying, "Are you looking for me?" I kind of laughed and said no, I was talking to your cat. I could tell she didn't believe me and I wonder just who she is hiding from. Awkward and weird, but amusing.

275 In today's further adventures with the Honda generator, I was able to get it to run with the ignition module driven by the generator's own "twelve volt" output. It would not start that way; had to connect a 12 volt battery to start it, but once running, the battery could be disconnected. The 12 volt output makes only about a 0.25 volts at cranking speed. Unfortunately, I metered it at 17.6 volts at normal running speed, with no load. That's a little salty for the long-term health of the HEI module, I would wager. Not to worry. I have on hand some little adjustable IC buck regulators. I will build one in, along with a filter network to smooth the DC from the bridge rectifier, and probably also a 12 volt pilot lamp, to serve as evidence the battery is charged. And I ordered a small 12 volt AGM battery from Amazon for 20 Loonie dollars, which will become part of the finished machine. It ought to last years, being asked to put out an amp or two for less than half a minute, and then being put on float charge for as long as the generator runs.

For sure. Also be prepared to defend it, and don't tell ANYONE you have it.

If the trucks ever stop rolling, the blue cities will have food riots within three days, and cannibalism within a week.

Thanks.

315 In today's further adventures with the Honda generator, I was able to get it to run with the ignition module driven by the generator's own "twelve volt" output. It would not start that way; had to connect a 12 volt battery to start it, but once running, the battery could be disconnected. The 12 volt output makes only about a 0.25 volts at cranking speed.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 29, 2026 12:37 AM (Asc1p)

So If I'm following right, it isn't producing enough voltage during cranking to power the ignition. We have those problems with certain hot rodded harley engines with big compression. Most of the ignitions won't power up below 9 volts, and with bigger compression the starter will draw the battery below the 9 volt mark and they don't fire. There was a device we used to wire in that had two 9 volt batteries in parallel so the ignition always had the voltage needed. That came out with better cures since then. Now we use a relay that applies battery voltage right to the ignition during cranking. Did you figure out why its only producing 1/4 volt during cranking?

318 Oh my gosh, I have had this sock on for a while, I know it is from the candy art thread on Monday, maybe. I am sorry about that.

320 "Can I Play With Madness" is probably Maiden's best intro for a beginner. Has a good melody and is short - 3:38. A 7 and a half opus is tough for a beginner.
