The Empty ONT

So sorry everyone. Due to a personal emergency (everything's OK now), I was unable to prepare tonight's ONT as planned. I'll be back next week, but for now you'll have to talk amongst yourselves.

Order.jpg

I do have one bit of content for ya. It amuses me that STFU is somehow now part of the universal language of humans.

Again, apologies for the lack of content, but I'm sure you lot will have no problem yammering on without it.

64 Evening, overnighters,

The evening winds down. Tomorrow early I'll exercise. In the evening there is a free concert with national artist Gretchen Wilson and local star Amanda Shaw on the riverfront in a suburban town we often visit. They've been having these free concerts with various artists all month on Sat. nights. Nothing next week 10/31, I believe, but tomorrow night should be cool.

Don't forget to do the clock thing on Sat. night next week. I always overlook one of my timepieces -- usually the one in the car. There's the microwave, coffee maker, two bedroom clocks, five watches, and my kitchen wall clock. And the TV, computers, and phone, but they reset themselves.

Oh, and the new AM/FM/shortwave radio. Who knows, it might reset itself too.

Maybe boobs mean fecundity, but boobs have nothing to do with the sex bits, only the after bits (the post partum ones).

So is the main function of boobs to indicate "This is a female, and thus capable of giving birth"?

She was serious competition for Dawn Wells on "Gilligan's Island", Barbara Eden on "I Dream of Jeannie" and Elizabeth Montgomery on "Bewitched". Truly a golden age of female broadcast pulchritude.

TV and movies have completely lost the plot when it comes to smoking hot babes who also appear to be prime wife material. See also: Florence Henderson in "The Brady Bunch" and Shirley Jones on "The Partridge Family". Even though my actual age demographic was aligned with with Marsha Brady and Laurie Partridge respectively (and sure, they were hot), I was all about the MILFs even then. I think Today's Youth refer to this as the "tradwife" look.

If a female character is supposed to be hot today, she's always or almost always skanked out.

Posted by: BeckoningChasm

Grok knows all:
Evolutionary psychologists and biologists have proposed several related explanations for why this became a sexual signal:
Fertility and reproductive readiness: Breast development is a clear secondary sexual characteristic driven by estrogen at puberty. It signals that a woman has reached reproductive maturity. Fuller breasts are also associated (imperfectly) with higher body fat reserves, which historically correlated with the ability to support pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Honest signal of health and nutritional status: Maintaining permanent breast tissue requires metabolic resources. In ancestral environments, this could have indicated good health and access to food—traits relevant to mate choice.
Visual and sexual signaling: Unlike many other cues that are temporary or hidden, breasts are a permanent, highly visible feature. Once bipedalism and reduced body hair made the chest more exposed, selection may have favored traits that served as attention-drawing signals of femaleness and maturity.

119 I actually mostly like having DST, and going back to STD time for the winter months. Works pretty well with my natural schedule. Its hard for me to get up when its pitch black outside so going back to standard time for winter months helps. I've also always lived pretty near the eastern edge of the time zone so DST doesn't mean light at crazy late evening hours in the summer, and having extra light later is helpful for getting stuff done.

Russell Finch: Wait a minute, are you knocking this country? Are you saying something against America?

Algernon Hawthorne: Against it? I should be positively astounded to hear of anything that could be said FOR it. Why, the whole bloody place is the most unspeakable matriarchy in the whole history of civilization! Look at yourself, and the way your wife and her strumpet of a mother push you through the hoop! As far as I can see, American men have been totally emasculated. They're like slaves! They die like flies from coronary thrombosis, while their women sit under hairdryers, eating chocolates and arranging for every second Tuesday to be some sort of Mother's Day! And this positively infantile preoccupation with bosoms. In all my time in this wretched, godforsaken country, the one thing that has appalled me most of all is this preposterous preoccupation with bosoms. Don't you realize they have become the dominant theme in American culture: in literature, advertising and all fields of entertainment and everything. I'll wager you anything you like: if American women stopped wearing brassieres, your whole national economy would collapse .

Some Canadian provinces were thinking the US would finally get legislation through this year and announced they were going to stay put instead of changing (Saskatchewan has been doing that for years). Well, let's just say the North American time zone map is going to look a bit strange on November 1.
British Columbia will be aligned with US Mountain time and an hour ahead of the western states which observe Pacific time. Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and western Ontario will be aligned with US central time.

So on November 1, when it's 9 a.m. in Seattle, 10 a.m. in Helena and Denver, and 11 a.m. in Minneapolis, it will be 10 a.m. in most of British Columbia and 11 a.m. all the way from near the BC/Alberta border to just west of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The western part of Ontario, which is much less populated, is on Central time, like Manitoba. When Manitoba announced its clocks were staying put, Ontario's government had the sense to say that the western part would stay aligned with Manitoba. Otherwise if it was 11:00 a.m. in Manitoba, western Ontario would be 10:00 a.m., and eastern Ontario would be 11:00 a.m.

And I was wrong with my first time description: On November 1, if it's 9 a.m. in Seattle, 10 a.m. in Denver, and 11 a.m. in Minneapolis, BC will be 10:00 a.m., Alberta and Saskatchewan 11:00 a.m., and Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec will be Noon.

171 SLS (nasa rocket) only launches Orion (Lockheed Martin). It does not launch the lander.

The two vehicles are launched separately, on different rockets, and meet up in lunar orbit:

Vehicle – Orion (crew capsule, Launched by - NASA’s SLS,
Carries - All 4 astronauts to lunar orbit

Vehicle - Lander (Starship or Blue Origin), Launched by - SpaceX, or Blue Origin) winner of the contest*,
Carries - Two astronauts to and from the surface of the moon

* NASA plans to select the lander for the Artemis IV mission based on readiness following the Artemis III docking (con)tests in 2027.

NASA couldn't fuck up a soup sandwich more...

176 >> Publius, do you have a preference for what would be best?

Yes, and that would be standard time. It's basically astronomical, really, of the definition of mean solar time. Noon means the sun is at transit, and seasonal variation aside, 6AM means "early morning", and 6PM means "near sunset".

The Equation of Time adds some variation, and then standard time zones themselves add some more variation, necessary so clocks can be reasonable synchronized in the modern world of fast travel, but I can tolerate that.

Jumping another hour on a whim about when you want the sun to set according to clock time vs the standard 8 - 5 work schedule is a bridge too far for me.

Tomorrow, the 24th, marks the 80th anniversary of the first picture of earth from space. It was from a camera aboard a V-2 rocket launched from White Sands back in 1946.

If Isaacman was running NASA back then 20 years ago, it would be different. The current SLS fiasco is basically sunk cost fallacy, and the result of NASA becoming basically a congressional pork jobs program.

The reason Isaacman is going along with it is because of the Chicom threat of getting there first. To scrap the SLS crap and start with something reasonable, would add years to the timeline.

183 The thing is, so far as I know, no other female mammals have permanently swollen breasts like humans. Most of them grow their breasts when there are offspring to feed. In fact, to the best of my knowledge (which is not extensive I will admit) most mammals have similar bodies, male or female.

Yes, there are antlers and manes but the overall body shape is the same. Humans are the exception.

I'm just trying to be less stupid. So when I report to my home planet, I mean, when I sleep the sleep of the stupid, I can dream unrestrained.

We did go to permanent DST in the early '70s under Nixon (energy crisis and all that). That lasted about a year. When clock time of sunrises was pushing 10AM in the western boundaries of the time zones at higher latitudes (looking at you Michigan and Indiana), that was too much, and they switched back.

I predict the same thing will happen again if they do go to permanent DST again.

Daylight Saving Time: The Simple Alternative
How free people would handle the seasons

Instead of the ludicrous and ignorant re-setting of clocks, how much harder would it be to say, on such-and-such days, businesses, schools, et al. shift to summer (or winter) hours Anyone can follow the gov't recommended (but not mandated) "shift" days if preferred. Just change the "business" hours for those that want to. Not the clocks.
