Monday Night ONT - November 2, 2026 [TRex]

20261022-SandyUT1980.jpg

Good evening Horde. Welcome to the Monday overnight thread. The bar is open and the refrigerator has been freshly re-stocked with Rootbeer.

Welcome to the Monday night ONT which means vintage overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. Pants are optional. This ONT is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Fauci is fair game.

[Top photo: Frostop Rootbeer stand, Sandy, Utah. The chain folded in the early 1980s.]

***

The Monday ONT has dialed up the wayback machine with very random results.

***

A-1 taxi in Laredo, Texas - 1982. The company is still operating but at a different location. It claims to be one of the longest-running taxi companies in the area. The building on the photo was on Farragut Street, but there is no evidence it still exists.

20261021-A1TaxiFarragutLaredoTX1982.jpg

***

The Ace of Clubs Lounge on Route 90 in Lake Charles, Louisiana - 1979 (not to be confused with the Ace of Spades Club ONT). No evidence the Ace of Clubs still exists (at this location or otherwise nearby) or that the building remains.

20261021-AceofClubsLoungeRt90LakeCharlesLA1979.jpg

***

Octopus Car Wash was a chain in Minneapolis ("many hands to serve you"). This location was likely on University Avenue, near the St. Paul border. All locations are closed and the plastic octopus mascots were sold off. There is a current business in Minneapolis called Octopus Car Wash & Detail center that is not related, but trying to echo the former namesake.

Anyone ever seen (or have) one of the original octopus mascots?

20261021-carwashMinneapolisMN1981.jpg

The Clown Motel is still operating at 521 N Main St in Tonopah, Nevada.

The motel opened in 1985, founded by siblings Leroy and Leona David. They built it next to the historic Old Tonopah Cemetery (established around 1901) as a tribute to their late father, Clarence David. Clarence, a miner who died in the 1942 Belmont Mine fire, had collected more than 150 clown figurines and statues.

It has different ownership but still operates as "America's Scariest Motel" with 31 basic rooms, ghost-hunting gear rentals and a gift shop and clown museum.

20261022-clownmotel521NMainStTonopahNV.jpg

Exact photo date unknown, but believed to be post-2019.

"Dinosaurland" was likely an advertisement for the region rather than a specific location by that name. No evidence this billboard still exists but this photo was taken in 1991 on Route 40 near Vernal, Utah.

20261022-DinosaurLandRt40VernalUT1991.jpg

***

Jumer's Castle Lodge, 117 N. Western Ave. in Peoria, Illinois - 1980. The building is still standing but no longer operates as the original Bavarian themed hotel and restaurant.

James Jumer opened the Lodge (with restaurant and lounge) around 1970 on the site of the former Kramer's Drive-In. The Jumer's chain expanded to several locations in Illinois and Iowa but filed for bankruptcy in 1999.

The original architecture has been preserved and the location is now an assisted living facility.

20261022-JumersCastlePeoriaIL1980.jpg

***

Beauty Shop, Browning, Montana - 1987. Believed to be on the Blackfeet Reservation but specific location unknown.

20261021-MainStBrowningMT1987.jpg

Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

***

Main Street, Columbus Junction Iowa - 2003.

20261021-MainStColumbusJunctionIA2003.jpg

***

Spot Cleaners at 2701 Madison Street, Seattle, WA - 1980. Both the business and building are long gone.

20261021-SpotCleanersMadisonStSeattleWA1980.jpg

***

Union League, 140 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA - 1905.

The club was founded in 1862 as a patriotic society supporting the Union and Abraham Lincoln. The clubhouse was completed in 1865 and remains the organization's headquarters. There have been renovation and expansions but the building largely looks the same today.

20261022-unionleagephiladelphiaPA1905.jpg

***

One of roughly 20 themed fiberglass corn statues created in 2015 for the Community Corn Project by the Vinton Guild of Fine Arts. Benton County, Iowa. Still exists on the city hall grounds at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and East 4th Street.

Posted by: Braenyard

I once found a stack of those sticky name tags at work the had 'Hello, my name is:' and then a blank spot to write your own name in.

I peeled one off of it's backing and wrote in 'Inigo Montoya' and wore it around until I was marched down to HR.

One of our Mexican brethren took offense and the 22 year old HR babe could not grok that is was a joke. Never heard of the movie. I believe that was my first HR write-up at JPMorgan.

It was a gag in the Richard Pryor/Jackie Gleason movie The Toy. Gleason's name was U.S. Bates, but everyone pronounced it U-ass. (It actually got a bit tiresome due to repetition.) It was an ok movie, but I haven't seen it anywhere for a long time. It made fun of some PC stuff.

Casio something-or-other. I don't have my first one, but I still have its replacement, an fx115v.

I switched to RPN during college, and still use it. It is actually painful for me to use a "regular" calculator, as I have to intensely concentrate on every step.

For those who don't know, RPN stands for Reverse Polish Notation. It saves about 20 percent of your required keystrokes, which was a very big deal before the days of personal computers, spreadsheets, and programmable calculators.

Open mike one end of the room, with a chair. We were sitting facing the fireplace, other end of the room (December, so nice near the fire). At some point music starts. One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. Guy playing guitar and singing it. One of the group says "wait - damn, that sounds like Thorogood." It was. Didn't talk with him. Not that unusual to encounter singers/actors in the SB area like that, but it was funny.

RPN is always very easy and nice to implement as a stack machine type of thing. Operator precedence doesn't really matter.

As an exercise way back in college, I wrote one in C and then assembler. Very easy. Now, I also wrote a regular "forward" one. Much more complex, especially with parentheses. Both were done as simple command line that take an expression string as input and spew out the result.

She thought she’d escaped “a pedophile ring,” calls Trump “clearly a pedophile and dangerous,” and says someone made an attempt on her life after her report.

Her message: “We need to get the corruption to stop. We need to use our voices. We need to get Donald Trump out of office.” And to Trump: “If you think you’re going to intimidate me, Donald Trump, it’s not going to work. I'm not afraid of you.” Please share.

I check the mail about once a week. I had two dozen shiny political mailers, all of which did not make it past the overfull trash can at the post office. I figure that's where nearly all of them, for the entire state, end up, so I doubt it will sway a single vote.

Also, you don't see yard or street signs for conservative candidates up here. Only the lefties, because those homeowners are virtue signalling like their lives depend upon it, and the rest of us, which are the majority, are voting for the conservative candidates and don't need adulation to do so.

At least when the burning times come, we will know who to avoid and whom to approach for companionship.

Community notes: Cass County = Fargo = NDSU = college town. Probably as close as you'll get to a loony-lefty venue in NoDak.

While Morton County is the giant empty space across the river from the capital of Bismarck. 34,000 population, 17/square mile.

Agree totally. It was a trial run of mass protests by outsiders that caused millions of dollars of damage, terrorized locals for months on end and left 21 million pounds of garbage in the camp that the state had to pay to haul/clean up. (including abandoned dogs and puppies)

275 Election Update:

I had another wild day today. Had my first interview with the New York Times (?!!) about this AirTag incident. Got the bodycam footage and put that out there a few minutes ago. It really doesn't make Hughes look good at all. I could have put out worse, but at some point I've got to look at myself and ask whether I want to stoop to the other side's level. After having considered how I believe God wants me to act, I decided to simply stop here, and let the consequences come. There's still a good chance that I'll lose anyway, because two weeks of early voting has people deciding things without having all available info beforehand. On the other hand, I have a much better chance than I would have thought two weeks ago. It can honestly go either way.

I have to live with myself, even though a loss would be a setback for my town. If I've gotten through Obama and Biden, I can get through a loss like this. It's in God's hands now.

283 I've been past the Clown Motel numerous times, and, if we're stopping, I always tease my wife wife, "C'mon, hon, lets stay at the Clown Motel. It'll be interesting."
We always stay at Tonopah Station.

Dinosaur National Monument is right outside of Vernal. It's a somewhat strange park. It's a good sized territory, and the vast majority of it is managed as wilderness/backcountry land along the Green and Yampa(?) Rivers, but one very small section is the big tourist draw - a large hilllside, covered with partially excavated, largely intact, dinosaur skeletons, easily visible from the walkway. The whole thing is covered in a giant enclosed pole barn to protect them. Before the government got the property, a number of skeletons were removed. Two of them are centerpieces in the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh.
It's quite impressive.

Hello there.

Ellipsis'ss Soft Sandwich Loaf

430 g All Purpose Flour (King Arthur preferred)
1 tbsp sugar
9.5 g salt
3/4 tsp diastatic malt powder (optional but will make a difference)
2.5 tbsp baking milk powder (highly recommended)
1.5 tsp yeast
280 g water
1.2 oz baking oil (avocado is good)

Instructions/Notes to follow because I am long-winded

Posted by: ... at November 03, 2026 12:15 AM (vE0+H)

289 Ellipss'ssss Soft White Sandwich Loaf continued
1. Combine ingredients and knead with dough hook on low (KitchenAid speed 2 or 3) for 6–10 minutes, until smooth, elastic, and preferably passing the windowpane test.

2. Place in a lightly oiled container, covered, until doubled, approximately 1½–2½ hours at room temp.

3. Gently flatten into a rectangle, roll snugly into a loaf, and pinch seam closed. Look up a quick sandwich-loaf shaping video if needed.

4. Place seam-down in a parchment-lined 9×5 pan. Cover and rise until peak is about 1 inch above rim (45–90 minutes).

5. Preheat oven to 375. Bake for approximately 35 minutes. Cool on a rack before slicing.

*** You can reduce or omit the sugar but it is doing work besides adding sweetness. Can't stress how much I recommend the two optional ingredients which can both be found on Amazon. If you don't want to use milk powder, you can just replace the water with milk. But don't use both. I have a version that uses sourdough starter and yeast together and it makes a pretty huge difference but this should still make you a good bread as is. Happy to share. It took me a while to develop this one. Makes a nice soft classic white bread.

296 Let me know if you have questions Blondie and I will try to answer. I might not be around until tomorrow. I am tired.

You can use a bread machine to mix up your dough instead of a kitchenaid and then just proceed from Step 2.

Ideally you want to get the dough to a windowpane consistency so you can stretch it and it makes a thin membrane instead of tearing apart. I didn't target this to any skill level I just simplified my own recipe and tried to give enough guidance.
