Nürburgring Cafe

An orphaned baby rhino wears his protective blanket and is led around for a jog.

The very moment a lake begins icing over.
A mom gets the call that after sixteen days, her son has awoken from his coma.

Giant bamboo and I do mean giant.

Awesome Lego train.

Here's a weird hobby: "Stealth camping." You camp on public land in the middle of towns or even cities. But the trick is, you want to camp somewhere in plain sight, and yet hidden from casual viewers. This guy built a fake electrical junction box and placed it overnight on strip of grass in town and then "stealth camped" inside it for 36 hours.

It doesn't look like much fun. I think you're just supposed to enjoy the feeling, "Oh boy, I'm not supposed to be here but I totally am!" But you're stuck in a 2 x 2 x 3 box with a bedpan and an iPad.

Belugas are the most romantic of all cetaceans.

Birds being clowns and goofs.

Not a great site for playing baseball. Or soccer. Or most sports with a ball.

Nope.

A cheetah introduces her cheetlings.

The Nürburgring is a mountain race course in Northern Germany. It's sometimes called "The Green Hell."

Racing circuits are typically covered with smooth road surfaces; however, due to issues with paving technologies when the surface was first laid in 1927, the surface of the Nrüburgring is almost entirely uneven. It is enough to make drivers wonder whether any part of the circuit is flat at all. In addition, there is reduced traction due to dust, the course is narrow, and escape zones are rare.

Given that cars take off at some points, and that there are a number of blind, high-speed corners, it is perhaps more accurate to describe the Nordschleife as a one-way mountain pass than a circuit.

For the above reasons, the Nürburgring is said to be a living course that condenses all the world's roads into a single circuit, and is famed as one of the world's hardest courses.

Here are some wipe-outs from the 70s. Not too violent. Mostly just cars flipping over while trying to make a sharp turn.

This is gonna be a nope from me, dawg.

35 Willowed: My favorite though are the telepathic cat partners of the human telepaths who guard the ships in deep space travel from the Rats/Dragons in The Game of Rat and Dragon. One of the great short stories of all time. The cats go out in little craft steered by the humans and swat the controls that send light bombs to kill them because only they are fast enough to do it.

Yes -- one of the finest short stories, SF or not, ever written. And I say that not because I am a cat person, but because of the story's imagination and careful revelation, bit by bit, of the main surprise.

And because I am a cat person.

39 There's a break in Newport Beach called The Wedge where storm waves will break into very shallow water. There was an "event" this past June I think (depends on weather and waves). At least one local hospital preps for serious injuries in their emergency and orthopedic depts. when these conditions occur, I'm told. Hardest of hard passes, thanks.

45 One great aspect of peak SoCal golden age was surf film directors touring and playing their movies in high school gyms/auditoriums. Including the top ones like Bruce Brown. In fact that was the main "venue" for most surf films at the time. I was just a bit young for it, though did go to a few Friday night films in junior high. Such a fantastic time and place to be young.

There's an episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" where Mac and Dennis decide to hunt Rickety Cricket (a hobo associate of theirs). They set up a cardboard blind just for that purpose. And they dress in camo, which looks odd in an urban setting.
