LOL: Netflix Fires Its Head of Film Development, Apparently Due to Its Looming "Narnia" Disaster Wokeslop Video Game Company Bioware Transitions to "Out of Business" (Pronouns Was/Were)
I mentioned on Friday that Netflix had slashed 1,000 jobs, which is a 6% reduction in its total workforce.
"Everyone is collateral damage."
That's how one top Netflix insider summarized another bloody Monday at the streamer, which saw Dan Lin ousted as the company's head of film.
Following last week's 6% workforce reduction at Netflix -- which claimed victims including chief content officer Bela Bajaria and Lin's right-hand Doug Belgrad -- consensus said it was a matter of time before co-CEO Ted Sarandos would show Lin the door.
It took a day. On the heels of the Bajaria news on Thursday, Sarandos rang Lin on Friday to tell him he'd been dismissed, three sources told Variety. The exec kept his head up and pressed on through the weekend, appearing at Saturday's Academy Gala (in the same room as Sarandos) and at a Sunday tastemaker screening to support the filmmakers of "La Bola Negra." As has been summarized in many articles about the Netflix purge, creative leadership at the company is being overhauled amid poor stock performance and declining user engagement on the platform.
I wonder why. Clay Travis has a Conspiracy Theory:
Clay Travis
@ClayTravis
Netflix is firing all of its top creative leadership after their strategy of make every character gay and trans and every white person black failed to produce strong subscriber growth.
Competing narratives are flying about why Lin was let go, but they arrive at the same conclusion: In the end, it wasn't working....
There are also some interesting leaks around tension he's said to have with A-list filmmakers like Greta Gerwig and Ben Affleck, which we'll get to.
...
Four sources with knowledge of the matter said that, indeed, Lin and Gerwig had a falling out during a Zoom call about the project earlier this year. On a virtual meeting populated by numerous Netflix executives, Lin is said to have been "dismissive" to the director in conversation about the progress of the film. Lin is known in town to be incredibly fair, but at times obtuse in his frankness. Word travelled fast around Netflix that the meeting had gone south, at which point sources said Bajaria called Gerwig's producer Amy Pascal to smooth things over. Two sources also said that Gerwig's new, all-powerful CAA agent Bryan Lourd went to Sarandos directly over the faux pas. Lin was subsequently disappeared from the film, all sources concurred, and Belgrad stepped in as the primary Netflix exec overseeing the project (until, of course, he was laid off last week).
None of the sources suggested the incident led to Lin's firing. One Lin defender said he's never "afraid to talk about how to make a movie better." Another person familiar with the company said there are any number of filmmakers who could say the same about Lin's delivery. While it may be juicy to speculate that Gerwig's follow-up to the game changer "Barbie" could be troubled, don't forget that the industry doubted that Margot Robbie film right up to opening weekend. "Barbie" grossed $1.44 billion at the worldwide box office and became the highest-earning release in the history of Warner Bros. Pictures.
Yes but that was an ideologically-driven feminist making a movie for her fellow feminists out of a toy property designed for girls. It was a natural fit. She didn't gender-bend Barbie, as she did with Aslan.
Actually I believe there was a "Trans Barbie" in the movie, but not the Barbie, and anyway, leftwing feminists are all about being Queer Allies. I don't think the Christian families who are the target audience for a Narnia reboot are going to enjoy the Everything for the Gays and the Girlies tone Gerwig will bring.
CosmicBookNews's Matt McGloin says he hears the Narnia film -- actually The Magician's Nephew -- is "woke slop."
"Narnia is a mega woke slop insanity," says the source. "Think Amazon Rings of Power but worse."
The $280 million movie is already in serious trouble inside Netflix, where insiders have called it "awful" and "a genuine problem."
That report also described friction between Gerwig and Lin over the film, with reshoots ordered after a summer test screening.
Now Lin is gone with the movie four months out.
The first trailer was hit with 62,000 dislikes and a wave of Marvel comparisons.
Narnia hits theaters and IMAX on February 12, 2027, with the Netflix streaming release following on April 2.
...
CBN's source says there is a reason it is all happening now.
He claims that competition from the merged Paramount/Skydance/Warner Bros. corporation is the reason Netflix is making big moves.
"Now you know why Netflix was doing everything to stop the merger," says the source. "ParaBros is an existential threat."
"ParaBros" is the source's name for Skydance, the merged Paramount and Warner Bros. company that officially closed its deal on October 6.
"Did you see they fired Bela and Lin? Heads of series and movies in one week," the source continued, floored that both jobs turned over within days.
Our WB insiders add that Lin never got his faith-based projects off the ground at Netflix, which is another reason.
The warnings have been on the record for weeks.
On October 2, the Paramount source said flat out that "Netflix is in big trouble" and to expect major restructuring and firings.
Back on September 2, the source said Disney and Netflix "know what's coming and they're doing EVERYTHING to stop it."
And CBN's Narnia report, which flagged Lin and Bajaria as rumored to be on thin ice, ran October 14. Bajaria was out that same evening. Lin followed within days.
The firing landed alongside a TheWrap piece Monday arguing Netflix has a quality problem that may be impossible for any film chief to solve.
A top talent agent told the outlet that Lin faced the same challenge as his predecessor, Scott Stuber: the Netflix model demands too much volume to consistently put out high-quality movies.
CBN's source says that is not just a Netflix problem.
"DC Studios, Hulu, Starz, Marvel, and many others face the same problem," says the source. "Glut = Slop."
"Will ParaBros stop the madness? We shall see," the source continued. "Ellison wants to invest $$$ in quality but Kreiz is a penny pincher. The honeymoon won't last very long."
Video game studio BioWare announced it would close on Wednesday, marking an end to the organization that released some of the most popular video games in history.
Among the top titles from BioWare were Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the Baldur's Gate series, and Mass Effect.
"For more than 30 years, BioWare has been more than a studio. It has been a home for storytellers, developers, and players who brought our worlds to life," the statement read. "Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending."
Comments on the studio's X post were generally negative, with many users blaming the company's recent release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a fantasy RPG that attracted negative publicity for its inclusion of transgender and left-wing political themes. The release received mixed reviews on Steam. The prior installment of the series, Dragon Age Inquisition, received mostly positive reviews.
I never played Inquisition but Larry O'Connor was obsessed with it.
Arthur Kimes
@ComradeArthur
For context, Dragon Age: Veilguard was the one where a character started doing pushups to punish themselves for using the wrong pronouns.
Yes, this was a turn-based fantasy RPG.
Yup:

@jammach
Go woke?
Go broke.
BioWare has finally ended its slow, torturous suicide, started by the absolute mess of Mass Effect: Andromeda which shoehorned a ridiculous two dimensional girl boss as the lead. It should have been a well rounded, capable, believable female character but it was an insult.
They then followed this up with Dragon Age: Veilguard which introduced trans characters complete with customisable mastectomy scars and pronouns. Oh and one of the NPC characters is non binary and you get lectured about it in a 10min cut scene.
Veilguard flopped. Rightly so.
People want fantasy and escapism. They don't want lectures about how boring, bigoted and heterosexual they are.
So, good riddance BioWare.
I turn on Netflix to see them treating race-blind casting like an amusement park!

I suspect David Fincher not renewing his contract was as big, if not a bigger, factor in Lin's firing.
Fincher was the creative flagship.
And Lin wouldn't give him the budget for reshoots Fincher wanted on The Further MisAdventures of Cliff Booth, giving him enough only for a few days instead of a few weeks. And Fincher refused to renew his contract afterwards.

It is very, very rare if we see a movie on Netflix, Amazon or wherever the remote takes us at night. So rare we comment on the story being good.
The people who choose this garbage are either very stupid, liberal loons, or clueless of what anyone wants in 2026.
In general I hate everyone in Hollywood who dreams this crap up.
Is it because books are stupid now as well?
Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies and discovered watching online decades ago. I loved the entire movie, altho directed by Rob Reiner in one of his sane moments. The book given to him by his father.
The book and screenplay were rejected by many movie moguls til it was given to Reiner (who went loco and, as we all know, is now dead by his more insane son...and that was horrible no matter who Reiner was regarding his Trump blurtings of feces).
The theater opening of the movie did not make much $ due to weird marketing of wth is this? Comedy/romance/fairy tale?
It took being seen in homes to make it a hit and bring royalties. The casting was perfection.
I do wish they would give us cuts of Billy Crystal's ad libbing his parts. It was said Reiner had to leave the set he was laughing so hard.

Late 2024, but they also flopped with Anthem(badly) and Mass Effect Andromeda(more modestly), though it's harder to argue those were due to wokeness.
If they weren't going to be killed by Veilguard, it's probable Mass Effect 5 was going to kill them, having had a prolonged development cycle and apparently not much to show for it.
EA was taken private and had a bunch of debt added to it so there's more pressure to perform.

This is genuinely not that hard to manage.
You create tiers.
The bottom tier is cheap genre slop. You spend 8 weeks, max, making each thing, and pump them out constantly.
The middle tier. 16 weeks. More serious dramas and decently sized action movies and thrillers.
High tier. Elite filmmakers doing their thing. Netflix has the money. Just throw it at David Fincher to make whatever he wants every 2 years.

Translated from Haitian Creole
To the gang leaders and gang members holding our four compatriots hostage in Haiti:
Our kidnapped men are not combatants. They are aviation technicians who are part of our mission in Haiti, within the framework of an international mission. Our mission consists only of pilots and technical personnel, whose primary job is to carry out medical evacuations and save lives, not to wage war.
However, they were kidnapped in a cowardly manner while returning after buying food at a market in the area.
That is why, today, we have launched a military operation to rescue them. We have a single objective: to bring our four compatriots back home alive, without any harm.
However, I want you, the gang leaders, to understand one thing very clearly: today's attack is nothing compared to what is coming if we do not get all four hostages back alive.
And do not take our word for empty threats. We have already finished with the gangs in El Salvador, and we can finish with you too.
We still have time to avoid this.
Return our four compatriots to us alive, without any harm, and everything will go back to how it was bef

Netflix apparently runs at a profit, like the only major streamer to do it.
And part of it is that they constantly have content to discover, and people like their formulaic genre slop.
But, yeah, there's a reason Disney abandoned the "pay extra for a new movie" model with Mulan and went back to theatrical releases after covid. Most of the time, there's just not enough money coming in from streaming to justify the massive costs.
Cheap genre stuff has always been the cash flow grease to the wheels of the film industry. From cheap westerns in the silent period to New Line existing because of Freddy Kreuger.

75 It's incredible that Netflix has spent like $200 million per movie to make like 20 big-budget but completely forgettable slopbuster movies.
Why would you do that? If you're going to make slop, just hire Dolph Lundgren for $3 million and do a fairly cheap 80s action movie for $30 million total.
And then write it off.

I'm a mystery fan so I checked out the series This Is Not a Murder Mystery on Prime. I really don't know what to make of it. It is so over the top woke, particularly for a show set in 1936 England, that I can see it as a satire. For example, one of the two investigating detectives is a black chick and the setting is Lord James' manor and Lord James is a chick. So I've decided to view it as a comedy/ satire and enjoy it.

K-Pop Demon Hunter is getting a Criterion release in a month or so.
Character creation is not like I remember. It was state of the art when they introduced the butt size slide lever, and the boob size slide lever. But, I'm a little confused how you would customize mastectomy scars.
Three categories:
1. Organ theft type scars (pronounced and infected)
2. Bad doctor due to DEI scars (also, pronounced with daily medication required to stay lucent)
3. Above average doctor, scars barely visible, but character shows them to every other character anyway.

Analysts have suggested that Netflix was relying on owning Warner Brothers and their vast and epic catalog to prop up their content and lacking it had to let people go. Also, it was very, very, many millions of dollars expensive to be in that fight to buy WB.
But overall the streaming idea is a stupid dream as I and others have noted here several times: there's just not the money in it that people somehow deluded themselves into believing would be there.
And yes, they spend hundreds of millions for make these streaming shows and for God's sake how were they supposed to make that money back???

The Barbie Movie did well because the messaging wasn’t as in your face as many of these movies. You could, in fact, ignore it and find much of it funny. You can’t do that with many of this stuff they put out.
The gender bending Aslan, for instance, is purposefully antagonistic dressed up as “art”. This is a Christian story written by a Christian theologian and there is no mistaking who Aslan represents. Just tell the story, make it eye candy, and stop trying to be controversial just for the sake of controversy.

The problem is that the money filter has been gone for the last 10-15 years. In the past, people who made bad movies, aka flops, very quickly stopped getting asked to make new ones, sometimes after a single failure. Netflix and their brothers in woke don't care (or at least didn't) if the property makes money.
I think those days are rapidly coming to a close, because as the old saying goes, something that can't go on forever, won't.

Netflix has had some really good stuff but they have a few major flaws in addition to putting out an awful lot of crap:
1) they pay too much for this stuff.
2) Even the good stuff is released binge style which only works well for content with Many episodes, like 3 years of shows old school where it was 20 shows a season
3) they go freaking years between seasons which is insane and indefensible
4) At best this retains viewers, it does not draw new ones, so there's no additional revenue.
The basic plot (SPOILERS) of a woman deciding aliens can't be worse then communists and bringing them to earth where a spoiled rich westerner helps her seems pretty spot on.

Well that's another flaw for Netflix: they ignore the massively lucrative and high publicity theatrical market. If they had put out, say, Terminal List in theaters for 3 months first, they'd have made more money. Their fixation on being streaming only is hurting their potential earnings.
156
A top talent agent told the outlet that Lin faced the same challenge as his predecessor, Scott Stuber: the Netflix model demands too much volume to consistently put out high-quality movies.
Well, they certainly nailed that one.
Posted by: Archimedes at October 21, 2026 04:37 PM (Riz8t)
Hollywood did just fine the model of having volume. You just make some low budget, some experimental, some mid budget and only a few high quality and expensive - mostly sure things with proven teams.
A product of that is you could develop and train people who could make a movie that looked good without high cost and appealed to many audiences.
Now they put crap producers and writers with axes to grind against their audience. What movies are successful? Those that don't attack the audience like Barbie or Oppenheimer.

I do have the sequels on my wishlist. One day I'll actually include them in a sale purchase.
They've put years of work into Warhammer 3 making all the factions play differently. Its pretty amazing honestly.

162People who have had these services for years, be glad you lived in the days when you had a month of Netflix for 12 bucks with no ads. Because its going to go up, a lot and you'll get ads. And they are going to be expecting longer term commitments: six months, a year, five years, etc.
Them: People are cancelling Netflix right and left! What shall we do?!
The Suits: Raise the price, force ads on them, and make it woke!

It was my first "concentrated" Total War game, and I kind of bounced off the limited time period of the campaign. I want to go back to it, but it's one of like 5 Total War games I own and haven't played yet (Amazon Gaming gave away a bunch a year or so ago, so I have Three Kingdoms and Pharoah for free that I haven't played, plus I bought Troy in the last Steam Sale).

Rome is the granddaddy of the all. Napoleon is a lot more difficult, but less epic. You gotta play it a lot to figure out the sequence of not just things to build or units to create but also the order of cities to attack. Its all about no wasted turns. Which sort of sucked the creativity out of it for me. Rome is very replayable. There are a lot of mods for it, and if you get frustrated easily, a lot of cheats.

We hate it when the wimpy series writers stop after a max of 8 shows til the next season.
Part of going back to school pain when I was young was knowing TV's current shows were back, baybee! At least 20 or more shows for the school year, ending in May.
Now these prima donnas can't be bothered as 6 or 8 exhaust them.
We'll start something then say, nah. Usually due to stupid, now and then mindless gore (altho we are ok with violence after Justified and 24 numbed our brains).
I miss shows like Justified and Longmire. Or anything I can get into. We are watching Marshall and Tulsa King just to watch something. My dude hates Dana Delaney, by the way. I was watching, knew her voice, and her name popped into my memory.
This is beside the point, but she denies plastic surgery except Botox, that she quit after an eye drooping. Bull. She and Jennifer Anniston have had chin implants or something wacky and look more masculine. I will die on this hill.
I'm binging China Beach with Delaney, and there is no way she didn't mess herself up with plastic surgery. In the movie, Tombstone, she still looked normal.

172Saulnier is just about ground zero for my, "Well, are there ANY good filmmakers who are less than 80 years old?"
Having gone into a much more indepth study of directors over the years, I want to test a theory on you I have brought up here before: directors go in cycles, and in the past we've had wave come and wave go with short periods (if at all) between the waves. You had the earliest directors, who phased into the mid 20th ceutnry masters, who phased into the 70s masters and... um... that's pretty much it.
Who's our next Spielberg? Who is going to replace guys like Cameron and Ridley Scott? All these guys who have been there putting out stuff all our lives are gone or going. Some should have retired years ago like Scott.
There just does not seem to be a new coming wave of great directors. Villeneuve and Nolan are not making it.

Its hilarious that they list 'Anthem'. A shit game that barely anyone played, development was stopped at release, and then the game shut down - after people paid real money to play it - almost immediately.
Anthem was the worst piece of work they put out. Yes, worse than ME Andromeda and DA Transgender - at least those games reasonably worked.

186the Netflix model demands too much volume to consistently put out high-quality movies.
Disney had the same problem. Like five years ago they announced this huge wave of stuff they were gonna put out, and I just looked at it with dismay: it was too much, too fast. It takes time to put out good movies, and there's only so much talent out there that CAN make anything good.
If you require too much output, then even the best, fastest workers cannot keep up and you end up with Bob the Janitor doing coverage for your Star Wars movie. And to make matters worse, they started casting diectors and writers rather than hiring: what do they look like? What are their politics? What is their proclivity in the bedroom? Put them in charge!
Marvel put out like 8 movies and TV shows based solely on the talent having worked on the Rick & Morty show. That they were asian and black and women and homosexual was just icing on top of the cake!
But it turns out that the cake was made of reasty dog crap because they didn't have what it takes to actually make a movie or a TV show.

Problem is in about the 60s the 'minor leagues' of movies was cut off by TV and the lack of cheap local theatres to make B movies and play them. What allows you to slide in a new director is either to have him working with an A list one, or to have some experience doing smaller projects. Once you quit refilling that pool of people, you eventually run out.

They are playing to them: 9%, roughly, of gheys of all stripes of their stolen rainbow. Less of the bi's and cis and whatever else they've dreamed up this week.
For trans: 1.1%
THIS is their market audience and no wonder they are flops, trying to put black people DEI's as queens of the UK or Europe. Mixing sexes for traditional roles. It is retarded thinking that most people would pay to see this crap.
Then dumbing down even further with very bad writing.

Speaking of Warhammer and woke there is an argument I see now because they made Slaanesh ugly and hermaphroditic.
Slaanesh is supposed to be among other things the god of lust and well this is his/her herald: https://tinyurl.com/u8w9abtv
On the one hand its stupid - the servants of the god of war look like murders, the servants of the god of disease look disgusting, and the servants of the good of magic look like aliens. So presumably the Slaaneshi followers should look more like Morathi (hot half nekkid elf queen)
But on the other hand the chaos gods are BAD. They enjoy screwing with people. So it makes perfect sense that Slaaneshi demons would use illusion to get you to want them and then look like, well, crab armed DIADs when you wake up in the morning, sort of like the danger of beer googles at a Boston area bar.

This is why conservatives should NEVER watch a show until it's completely over. Star Trek Strange New Worlds which has had some great shows and had younger Kirk, Spock, Uhura, hottie Chapel and Scottie had cool episodes.

"Whalefall" is not a good movie...it's just oh...okay, I suppose. For the same problem that the book has.
It's loaded with whinging Daddy Issues.
As long as it sticks with the clean aspects of survival adventur, it's fine and enjoyable for about 2/3rds of the movie, but it the final act we go full Daddy Issues and a mystical confusion of the the main characters father talking as the Spirit of the Whale or vice-versa.
This mistake murders any excitement that the climactic escape should engender and turns it boring.
Sad.
Probably worth a "free" watch on streaming.

All four chapters of the original, but the next couple of chapters that were the expansions.
And then DOOM II.
And then I'm replaying DOOM 2016 because I got it for free (Amazon Gaming, people, I'm tellin' ya, I think it's still free right now).
228I think people were just happy that the rooms weren’t lecturing them about their privilege.
There is a billion dollar comedy out there with someone just spoofing movie making today with DEI requirements, intimacy coordinators, union requirements, taxes, etc done ZAZ or even Mel Brooks style. There is so much to make fun of there that they will never touch.
THe writer who comes up with a great story based on a property, the casting director who replaces the lead with a fat black woman, the producer's notes to make it for a modern audience, the publicist who insists they have to meet Oscar requirements, it goes on on what you can mock.

They want someone controllable, safe. But even if you replaced that management, there's no pool of people with the right experience level to be creative if you let them, and be able to pull it off.

Oh, I forgot.
I did watch all of the Marvel Studios shows on Netflix was back when they were the only game in town.
Dardevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage and The Defenders series.
They were at least half-way decent shows even if I was rolling my eyes half the time.
Netflix and Disney couldn’t even produce that level of quality these days if they tried.

I quit watching after that. Even Mr. Wednesday being entertainingly sociopathic couldn't get me back.

I'd love a website that just gives movies a pass - fail grade.
Even one joke, one little innuendo - fail.
Do entire series too after they're over. One little woke piece of crap - fail.

American Gods has he flaw of being written by Neil Gaiman so great concepts and bizarre, wild ideas but so twisted, perverted, soulless and hateful toward the good and right that it ruins its self.
240
The ending of the American Gods books sucked so maybe it is for the best the series never completed.

I thought Stardust was a great book. Then they made the pirate captain gay in the movie for no discernable reason.

I also thought Neverwhere was pretty good book.
I never read Good Omens. Cowritten with Pratchett. I assumed it would just be full of blasphemy.
Not that I don't enjoy Pratchett, but satirizing heaven and hell seems a bit fraught for pop culture to take on.

254They Sarah Connor'd her for the second movie just like they did in well Terminator 2.
But she was still just a mom, in Aliens she wasn't a tough fighter trained to kill and all shredded. She was just desperate, backed up against a wall, and determined to not lose the child she had found after losing her own kids to the time she lost while frozen. It worked really well; Cameron writes women really well.

They didn't put *any* thought into what made them money, that is the core problem. Saying they wanted to destroy what made them money is a lot closer.

The boys is soulless, it can be interesting as a change, but when EVERYTHING is soulless it just is miserable. Its like how Al Bundy the loser dad his family mocks is funny because its fresh, but when EVERY dad on TV is that, its not fun any more, its just cruel and hostile toward men.

Yeah, all of Netflix's original content is unspeakably horrid dross.
But they're in good company there. That's every studio. None of them are any good at anything, so it's not like there's some better alternative in that regard.
My problem is their content library. The only reason for a streaming service to exist is so I can watch something that isn't shit or garbage - namely, things made more than about 20 years ago.
Netflix has - nothing good. If you liked a movie, haven't seen it in awhile, and think "hey, I'd like to watch that," you can count on it not being on Netflix. If they have anything close, it'll be an awful sequel, or low-budget knockoff, or whatever.

Connor was a fighter in the second movie because she spent half her post-Terminator life trying to be mom to a soldier and the other half in prison doing pullups.
Ripley took a job as a longshoreperson in the space-docks because that was who was hiring, and it's not like she ever learned to code.

the best heroes are regular people who, due to circumstances, must do extraordinary things to survive, and in their struggle come realize they are not fighting alone. I 'm sort of in the Bertold Brecht camp.
A society that requires extraordinary individuals to fix its problems is weak or oppressive. A healthy society by definition, allows rationality and cooperative action to overcome crises. Ordinary flawed people save the day all the time.

Now to be fair, Bioware ceased to exist the minute they sold out to EA.
That's why they had to cram idiotic multiplayer into Mass Effect 3 that NOBODY wanted, instead of actually delivering on the promise that decisions you made in the first 2 games would matter (they didn't). And of course the INFAMOUS ending.
Going woke just accelerated the decline, but make no mistake, the second EA took over, Bioware was no longer the company that made absolute gems like KOTR or Mass Effect 1.
