Remington is always art. driver and guard, the two asleep next to the driver are possibly alternates? The lanterns on each side of the coach don't seem to be spilling much light. The coach interior is probably semi-dark, heavy yellow curtains pulled shut, but some of that lantern-light might get through.

The term stagecoach is derived from the way the journey was organized into separate sections called stages. A stage was a fixed distance between two stopping points, usually about 10 to 15 miles, where the horses were exhausted and needed to be swapped for a fresh team.
The coach itself was the vehicle, and the system of dividing the route into these stages allowed the travel to continue much faster than if a single team of horses had to rest for long periods. Consequently, a coach that operated on this system of timed stages became known as a stagecoach. Posted by: The More You Know at October 19, 2026 09:55 AM (uGZRR) 89

Wells Fargo Bank in Reno/Sparks used to sell Remington paintings and bronze statues. Man that stuff was EXPENSIVE even in the late seventies. Later on I’d see his stuff for sale at gunshots in Reno. Definitely grew in value. I remember as a kid walking through those Wells Fargo branches looking at the prices. Closest I’d get to Remington art was the Time/Life The Old West series of “leather” bound books(I think it was seven books). Great memories. Recognized this painting instantly. Great choice.

I read a book written by an Army officer's wife in the late 1800's. In it, she told about her ride in a wagon train from AZ to NM. One night, they took a narrow mountain road in the middle of the night. In the morning, she saw just how narrow and dangerous it was. She asked the Wagon Master why in the world they took such a dangerous road in the pitch dark. He replied, "Because the horses would refuse to go on it in the daylight." Stage coaches usually ran 24 hours a day, only stopping for horse team swap-outs.

---------- Brings up this story; Bicycling sports bro in full spandex garb is holding up traffic on a two lane road. He will not yield, flips off people. Come to a light and a pickup truck with a trailer packed with lawn mowers and stuff pulls up next to him. He gets to jawboning and the rear passenger doors fly open and two burly Hispanics jump out and proceed to beat the shit out of the guy while he's trying to get his feet out of the peddles. Eventually he's free of the bike, but the dudes take it from him, throw it on the trailer, and get back in the truck before the light turns green and take off. He's in the road looking for help and we're all laughing at him. Absolute poetry. Posted by: Martini Farmer at October 19, 2026 10:25 AM (RORbl) 145

The Old Stage-Coach of the Plains, 1901
Dimensions: 40 1/4 x 27 1/4″ Frederic Remington Love Remington's body of work so, yes, would hang. In 1901, stagecoaches were primarily serving as "feeder lines," carrying passengers, U.S. Mail, and cargo from train depots into the backcountry and mountain resorts. They weren't exclusive to the American West, but were heavily utilized in the Northeast to carry tourists and mail from train stations to remote wilderness resorts. A famous mail stagecoach robbery occurred in North River, New York, on August 14, 1901. See Sun Community News, 'The rise and fall of the Adirondack stagecoach,' published 2022. It was not the railroad that ultimately killed the stagecoach, but the automobile and the motor bus. Nice art to open the week. Thanks. Posted by: Mr Aspirin Factory at October 19, 2026 10:32 AM (8B4gm) ========= Apparently, the European left is casting this as a right wing problem because Macron is center-right in the European model of politics. Which taints Le Pen and should make her less likely to win. There also seem to be knock-on effects towards Meloni in Italy who has kept the response restrained in the last few days (though, reportedly, a lot of arrests), as a way to taint the European right as ineffectual and the source of the problems behind the riots (affordability, ha). I mean, Le Pen is a socialist wannabe estabishmentarian, so whatever. France has no government solution on the horizon. She said that Muslim French are as French as De Gaulle. Meloni is, however, hardlining her rhetoric against Islam in general. We'll see where that goes, apparently there's some public order "meeting" happening, or something.
