Child Killer in Oregon Shooting Spree Identified

He was himself killed by a good guy with a gun.

Alas, the killer murdered three children and an adult before he was cut down.

Three children and a teacher were killed, and two others critically wounded, in a shooting on Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, authorities said.

The suspect, a 16-year-old male, was shot and killed by a bystander, Bend police said.

Along with the teacher, the three children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said in a news conference Thursday night. Two others, a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, were taken to St. Charles Medical Center with critical injuries. No names were immediately released.

Krantz said that officers were called to the school just before 1 p.m. on a 911 call from a person who said they had been shot at several times while in their vehicle by a suspect with a long gun. Emergency dispatchers then received dozens of 911 calls that the suspect had entered the school.

The shooter forced his way into the school by "shooting at locked doors," Krantz said.

When officers arrived at the school within three minutes of the first 911 call, they discovered that the suspect had been killed by a bystander, Krantz said.

"An officer reported that the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him," Krantz told reporters.

After officers entered the building, Krantz said, they found the four deceased victims.

Officials would not say exactly what type of weapon was used in the attack or how many rounds were fired. Multiple law enforcement sources told CBS News the suspect used a shotgun.

There was no word on a motive.

Which causes us to very justifiably suspect it's one of the motives that the corrupt and craven establishment like to hide from the public.

The Teen of Obscured Allegiance was armed with a shotgun, the Daily Mail says,
purchased by his mother.

So he had the one weapon Joe Biden told people to buy, and it was likely legally purchased by a mother with no criminal record.

A teenage gunman who murdered three children and a teacher an an Oregon school shot through a secure area meant to keep children safe from killers like him, before being taken down by a hero bystander rumored to be a student's father.

The as-yet-unidentified 16-year-old was carrying a long gun that he used to shoot the locks out of 'secure vestibules' at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend shortly before 1pm PT Thursday, The Oregonian reported.

Those vestibules see visitors granted access to a locked porch area, whose second electronic door then opens into the school once they have been screened.

But that supposedly secure system was easily overcome on Thursday afternoon when the shooter shot his way into the special education area of the school and killed three children aged five, eight and 11 as well as a teacher. A seven-year-old child and 54-year-old teacher were also rushed to hospital in critical condition.

...

[A teacher] said: 'They were so afraid, the looks on their faces. It was really hard to see, [I] was just trying to calm them down.

'Some kids were praying, some kids were consoling other kids, but doing so quietly because they know you don't make any noise.'

Smith and her students were ultimately rescued from being killed by a good Samaritan who spotted the teenager and followed him into the building, shooting him dead shortly after he began his rampage.

Dispatch audio suggested the hero was the father of a student at the school, with 'It looks like the shooter has been neutralized, possibly shot by a father at the school' picked up by multiple news outlets.

...

One onlooker was sitting in his red Toyota Tacoma idling outside the school when he spotted the teen approaching the Silver Rail building with his gun.

Concerned by what he saw, the driver confronted the teen who returned a series of shots at the vehicle. A second good Samaritan then confronted the shooter inside the school and killed him.

A law enforcement official briefed on the shooting told The Associated Press the teen used a pump-action shotgun that was purchased by his mother.

The killer has been identified as John J. Griffin.

The heroic bystander is also being identified and he is, of course, a Chad.

He’s grateful for those he did save, but wishes he could have done more.

This is retarded. He likely shot out the glass, which is inexplicably, likely just plain, tempered plate glass, rather that wire reinforced glass.

Shooting the locks out on a likely metal door would be difficult and time consuming by comparison.

I'd gladly stand corrected here, but the lure that reporters are idiots with no real world experience is too great.

I would venture to wonder if the tranny=school shooter thing, while not wrong, is coming at it from the wrong direction. I would think that the same kind of kids who develop into school shooters are also the same type vulnerable to being indoctrinated (or even pushed by teachers and other adults) into the trans cult.

So it is more 'yes' than one becomes the other. The same kid becomes both.

And will the shooter's family sue the bystander for wrongful death , etc?

Just to be clear, I think the bystander is a f'n hero. Especially if said bystander was himself a minor....

Whenever a white male hetero does something bad, the media releases those details so fast they travel back in time so we know about him before he commits the crime.

137 A breaching round or slug-shot is a shotgun shell specially made for door breaching. It is typically fired at a range of 6 inches (15 cm) or less, aimed at the hinges or the area between the doorknob and lock and doorjamb, and is designed to destroy the object it hits and then disperse into a relatively harmless powder.

170 the blast damage to people and vehicles and buildings would be ... not minimal.

In the 70s, a race team came up with what they called the Chapparal, it was a race car with vaccum system that held it to the track with ridiculous downforce. It was able to corner much, much faster than anyone else on the track and was very successful for the few races it ran.

The problem was that the vacuums sucked up not just air but anything else on the track like debris, bits of tires, bolts, pieces of plastic etc and it rained down on cars behind the Chapparal. Other drivers were less than pleased. The concept was banned.

175 123 > How does one "shoot out locks" with buckshot, anyway?

You can load a shotgun with different kinds of shells. Some people will have their home defense shotgun with birdshot, then buckshot, then slugs. That way if your first shot doesn't eliminate the threat, each followup is more severe.

Maybe the kid had slugs in addition to buckshot.
Posted by: bonhomme
======
Shooting birdshot is stupid practice unless you live in an apartment with thin walls.

And you can still miss with it. Just go with buckshot and be done with it.

Slugs are mainly for where you need massive penetration or you need greater distances like hunting as buckshot fades pretty quickly which makes it more useful for typical self defense scenarios. Cops can find the massive penetration useful like for penetrating car bodies or outside walls/doors but most of us in self defense situations won't.

That big ole chunk of lead slows recovery time between shots, goes through your sheetrock walls with each, and will probably pass through the villain unless you hit something critical.

Plus, firing them enough to be confident of abilities is a stone cold beyoach. So most people don't train enough.

178 Bend-La Pine Schools, that includes Silver Rail Elementary, was one of the first to ban carry following the Giffords & Everytown-backed passage of SB 554. Under its revised policy "bringing a gun on a school campus - even with a concealed carry permit -- could result in a year in prison, a $6,250 fine or both..."
Heather McNeil of the Bend Chapter for Moms Demand Action pushed for the policy to be adopted.
"It's all about safety, It's all about taking care of our kids. Lockdowns are happening, & they're so terrifying, & we need to do what we can to make sure that kids are safe."
"If my child was still in school, I would take a huge breath of relief.Just to know that the school district is taking this seriously & caring about the safety of children, that makes me relieved."
Julianne Repman, spokesperson for the district:
"We just really believe that this is something that helps to create a better environment for teaching & learning, it takes a little bit of stress off our students & staff & those volunteering in our schools to know that we're taking this extra step to create this learning environment that they can really thrive in & not worry about their safety."

190 Loading birdshot in a home-defense gun is a really stupid idea.

The main reason is that any shot, even birdshot, doesn't spread as much as quickly as people think it does. Even if you get a 10-yard shot in your home, which isn't really likely most of the time, birdshot spreads around 18 inches at that distance. You can easily miss with it, and then whoever is in your house is angry and your ears are ringing.

That is what it is designed for, not self defense. And you should fire patterns, use the correct birdshot size, and figure out chokes as necessary to get the bird of your choice at the distances you are likely to fire at them.

Lot of people just skip that and fire whatever is cheapest and have lousy 'luck'.

Pretty much true that mass murderers seldom try to optimize their ammo to kill people--most of them rely on point blank range shots on motionless victims. If in such a situation, get your ass moving and start throwing whatever at the shooter--human reflexes cause flinching at thrown objects in the field of vision.

207 To beat a dead horse from the last thread, Brave AI gave this answer on the change in Marcus Brody:

"According to actor Denholm Elliott, the writers had to rewrite Brody’s role because he had served as a father figure to Indy in the first film. With Indy’s actual father introduced in the third film, the character of Brody needed to be differentiated to avoid overlapping roles. Director Steven Spielberg sought to provide a contrast to the serious dynamic between Indy and his father."

People want to not kill people but whenever you use a lethal weapon, you shoot to stop them to keep them from doing serious mayhem or death to you. Birdshot can be lethal up close but using a longarm, you never want them that close in the first place. Longarms are far less retainable at short bad breath distances than a handgun for example.

But birdshot in a eyesocket or in the neck or even thighs can enter the brain, shred the arteries pumping blood to the head, or destroy teh major arteries in the legs leading to rapid bleedout.

The lesson is if you are shooting, you already have to be comfortable with the fact that the person may die and that is on them. So use the appropriate self defense ammo and not try to fuzzify or weasel out of the grim fact.

Secretary of State offices publish the numbers. Some individual counties do it too.

There are pockets that are even, maybe even up, from 2022 numbers. But early leads from the start of early voting are eroding fast in most locations, in particularly Ohio which the left has been harping on for weeks. Rural counties have higher turnouts than metros, and Democrats don't win anything other than the metros in Ohio.

NC saw higher day one numbers yesterday than in 2022, and they had a bigger advantage (much bigger) than in either 2022 or 2024 proportionally, but we'll see if that lasts. There are live updates from one county, New Hanover, and they're showing a serious decline already on day 2:

The people doing it on X generally have the voter history files courtesy of the state political parties or affiliated turnout groups. That is how they assume partisanship in states (use their vote in primaries as either R or D) without registered voters. In states with registered voters, they simply use that.

Some states may actually report partisan breakdowns.

You make decent assumptions at the precinct level. Precincts tend to remain relatively stable proportionally from one election to the next. So, assume that the precinct that went 65-35 Democrat in the last two cycles does the same this cycle, and you have a healthy estimate for what's going on now.

Personally, I would harden the exterior entry points first. Doors are a key ingress point and simply putting security screen doors can slow down entry quite a bit. Windows, in really bad places (and also useful in hurricane prone areas, there are either security windows premade or film you can apply that makes ingress more difficult as the film holds the glass shards together when someone tries to break it. And as you say, nasty sticky plants like barberry, pyracantha which is of the devil, and even Chinese holly can make people second guess entry at that point.

Alarms, lights, and cameras also help along with proper inside doors and locks if they get through the security exterior screen door.

Kelik Summer wrote on Facebook: “Hey everyone. Today has been the worst day of my life. My son Rhoam was killed in a school shooting. We are broken and lost, but are surrounded by friends and family who are keeping us safe. I do not know yet if I will be canceling practice on Sunday or if I will need it more than ever. Frankly, the ads during the baseball playoffs on cable are ridiculous. Between the ED med commercial by megan fox, Sweeney's boobs, and a ridiculously horrific horror movie trailer Its no surprise kids aren't into sport anymore. I can't seriously sit there with a 8 to 15 year old kid and let them watch it. Baseball should get its shit together and tell the networks to have some freaking standards for their premiere games. Ugh. Hard nope. Want a decent and relatively cheap home defense gun, get an AR in .223/5.56 with an adjustable stock.

In yesteryear, it was a M1 Carbine or a Ruger Mini 14 but even the clones now are expensive. AR's are cheap to shoot, cheap to buy one good enough to defend a home, and most people can shoot a long arm rifle more accurately than a handgun. Easy to dismount and clean, low recoil, and actually choosing the right ammo, overpenetrates walls and the like less than a 9mm bullet. With a thirty round mag, you would rarely have to reload in a basic self defense scenario.

Next up would be a pistol cartridge carbine--a long arm that fires a pistol cartridge. Again, ammo selection for proper self defense is important and that relates to handgun self defense ammo being designed for a certain velocity range for expansion. Firing some out of a long arm can result in bullet fragmentation.

Like in public, I want to be a harder target so the lazy ass low lifes go somewhere else to do their thing. Interviews with scumbags show even some basic minimal tactics like locking your doors, not having flimsy hollow entry doors with cheap locks, and deadbolts can dissuade a burglar or other lowlifes. Ramp it up a bit with cameras, alarm systems, etc., and many will go bother neighbors without those. Career criminals are surprisingly benefit risk oriented.

Even the dumbest type, street robbers, can often be dissuaded if you do your part not appearing an easy target. Head stuck in a phone is just asking to be robbed.

Posted by: whig at October 16, 2026 02:25 PM (E4rtv)

268 I thought, nah, 16 gage slug or buckshot is NOT what you use to break the lock of a glass door. Shooting the lock to open a door is Hollywood fantasy. Cops use those rams.
