This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread. For this week, the Wheel of Hobbies (TM) is feeling random and decided on a hobby scrapple theme for this Hobby Thread. [Top photo: Location unknown, but gold star for clever use of a dump truck for home landscaping design]![]() The Merrimack Valley Collection is a legendary comic book collection in which someone bought comics off the rack and stored them in a cardboard box for almost 80 years. Heritage Auctions sold many of these comics in a couple of auctions in Dallas last week. The top selling comic was Captain America No. 1 from 1941 in very good condition, and it sold for $716,750. Another standout was original art from Gary Larson's 1985 Far Side comic about socially insecure clowns. It sold for $112,500, more than double the previous Far Side record of $51,600. ![]() ![]() Words of wisdom: "Because despite all our troubles, when things are grim out in that wide round world of ours, that's when it's really important to have a good hobby." Afternoon and into evening, hobbyists!
This week I finally received my shipment of Romeo y Julieta cigarillos, the little ones that don't require much time to smoke. Earlier this week I tried a Red, and this afternoon a White. Both are pungent compared to my pipe tobaccos. Speaking of that, since it was cooler here today I considered stopping at my favorite coffee shop and having my pipe with a coffee outside. But it was awfully windy, and that makes a pipe burn hot. Instead I repaired to the local pipe/cigar store and smoked in their lounge. I'd have bought something new -- but they still are low on pipe tobaccos, except for their own blends, and have no idea when they will get more in. I settled for some pipe cleaners. The painting of the human runner and bull figures was fascinating. that was a big part of what I loved about building plastic scale models, whether it was the Universal Monster series, airplanes, cars, tanks, submarines, or sailing ships. I gave up model-building right when I was ready to move on to airbrushing, so I've never done that. Now, with two cats and no special space where I can work on a model without them interrupting me, I guess I won't get back to it soon.
My ca. 1960 Pyro "Cowpuncher/Gil Favor" figure kit is still in the closet. This is the one of a cowboy with his saddle over his shoulder, wearing his chaps and bending his head to light a cigarette. It came from eBay in 2005. I'd love to be able to paint and assemble it with the skills I have now. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 17, 2026 05:54 PM (wzUl9) 9
Yeah, the stanley #1 plane is the only one I'm missing. One day I'll find one. They are pricey little bastards though. I saw an earlier mint one with the original box for $5K which is insane, because it could never be used, so screw that. I almost got one for $800 that a needed a little work, but I decided against it because they are pretty damn small and I probably would never use it. It might have been worth it to complete the stash since I do have the #2 up to the #8, but when the time is right I'll get a no issues "user" version, not a museum piece.

The video about spinning yarn was interesting although it took a moment to follow his accent. Spinning, whether on a treadle wheel or with a drop spindle, always struck me as a way to make something necessary with the simplest tools. Developing the right touch would have been a valuable skill.
Combing two hobby activities, there are many paintings from the 1800s of young girls spinning with a drop spindle. It was a popular subject. Posted by: JTB at October 17, 2026 06:03 PM (yTvNw) 16
The other thing I should have kept -- and my mother did keep a lot of them until she passed away -- were the plastic Hartland Co. Western figurines. We'd call them "action figures" today, except that the mounted ones didn't move, and the standing "Gunfighters" series had only arms that you could swivel and pose. But they were beautifully painted, they often resembled the actors in the face, and came with detachable hats and guns. The Gene Barry "Bat Masterson" figure had his cane as well as derby hat and his cross-draw holster and gun.
Hartland had Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, John Payne's Restless Gun character, Paladin, Cheyenne Bodie, the Lone Ranger and Tonto, Wyatt Earp, Bret Maverick -- pretty much the roster of '50s and early '60s hit TV Western heroes. Mom kept a bunch of them, and I stupidly did not take them along when I cleaned out her apartment in '86. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 17, 2026 06:03 PM (wzUl9) 17

I had a comic book collection of Marvel issues starting in the early-ish 1960s, back when they cost a dime or 12 cents and the annuals were a quarter. They would be worth a fortune today, I guess, but selling them did get me through a year of college.

I guess you could call old-style wet shaving a hobby, since I could (and for many years, did) use an electric razor, or settle for those multi-blade things which is almost all you can buy now at Target or Walgreens. I have seven or eight double-edge safety razors, mostly vintage Gillettes: a 1937, a late Forties, three from the Fifties, and two from the early Sixties. Also a Gillette "Travel" razor, which is like the Forties or Fifties models except for having a much shorter handle; and a Hoffritz "Slant" in its own chrome travel case.
As for modern razors, I have a Merkur Adjustable and a Fatip Lo Storto, which means "Slant." Both shave very well. I rotate among these every two weeks, shaving every other day. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 17, 2026 06:11 PM (wzUl9) 26

When my brother joined the military back in the early 90's, he was going to sell his comic book collection, so I bought it for $300, not wanting him to lose it. About a decade ago, I sold it back to him for $300. I was always just holding them for him. He still has them and was going to give them to his eldest daughter (who's an animator and cartoonist), but when she said she might sell them, he decided to hold onto them.
Some nice comics, including a few copies of mint specials, some with cutting edge holographic cards from DC and I believe, at least the first 70 or 80 issues of X-Factor. Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at October 17, 2026 06:18 PM (l3cgK) 31

Mom also kept three other icons of my childhood. One was Aurora's "Big Frankie" plastic model kit, a large-scale figure of the classic Karloff character with a collar and chain attached to his neck. Mom kept it sitting atop her upstairs window A/C unit for years. She also had my 1/8 scale Monogram Jaguar XKE 2 + 2 kit from 1966. Twenty years old, it was still intact in her closet.
The other was a stuffed plush figure of Bob Clampett's "Cecil the Sea Sick Sea Serpent" from the Beany and Cecil cartoon show of the early '60s. Originally he had a voice box and a pull ring; you pulled it and one of six or seven pre-recorded sayings would play. That stopped working decades earlier, but Mom kept him on an armchair in her bedroom. I wish I'd taken them and the Hartland figures, or some of them. In the past few weeks I've picked up cross stitching again. I know several of the ettes do this also.
I read that people have a limited amount of choices we can make during each day until we use up our "budgeted" amount. Quilting and other needle arts, to me, require choices and judgment. Cross stitching--you just sit there and do what the instructions say, lol. I'd forgotten how contemplative it can be. I got on eBay and did searches, and there are thousands of vintage kits, I guess from estate sales and shops closing. (Etsy didn't have as many.) I found the most beautiful winter sampler kit, like Victorian postcards. That should get me through next year! Posted by: Skywch at October 17, 2026 06:26 PM (KCBih) 39

Jim - the FNIRSI ones have become popular, especially among ham radio ops, because they're so cheap. Of course, many people talk trash because they're not as good as an old HP or Tektronics that's the size of a washing machine. I'm sure they have the same issues as many cheap Chinese electronics, but for the occasional user they're probably good enough. I'll have to investigate further.

I've been trying to learn simple calligraphy with a pencil. This is partly to improve my hand control and I just like fine writing instruments, in this case pencils. Mrs. JTB's anniversary gift to me was a box of Blackwing 602 pencils. (After so many decades, anniversary gifts don't have to be expensive, just thoughtful.) I have a few Mitsubishi pencils and they are excellent but I like the feel of the Blackwing better.
Another part of the writing instruments hobby is pencil sharpeners. I'm sure there are good electric ones out there but I only use hand sharpeners. At least they don't eat up the pencils as fast. It's similar to keeping my knives appropriately sharp. Posted by: JTB at October 17, 2026 06:42 PM (yTvNw) 52

I'd kill to get a hold of the some of the Gary Larson hand drawn original art. I was curious how it got out in public in the first place. Larson was one of the few that held onto the rights, so the syndicates didn't have ownership, and only he could release them for private ownership. So, there aren't a lot of them out there. Mostly released through benefits and fundraisers or gifts to people Larson knew. When he retired (the first time) he let a few go as well. No wonder the one mentioned above sold for over $100k .

VOLS!

Designed my first PCB with KiCAD this week. Takes a while to get fluent with the editors. One thing KiCAD does (and too many other software devs do too) is gratutiously change the damn GUI every release, so instructions and courses based on earlier versions lead to a lot of gotchas when applied to v10. They gratuitously rename labels and move submenus to new parent menus, etc, etc. The only part of the interface you can rely on not to change is the keyboard shortcuts (usually.)

I have questions. I assume they blocked off the roads so there's no chance of unexpected traffic? What kind of damage could it do to you to wipe out at that speed? Do you have to be crazy to drink Red Bull, or does drinking Red Bull make you crazy? I ended up roller-blading fast down a steep hill, saw a sharp curve at the end, and threw myself down beside the path rather than fly off at the bottom. Flipped head-first and cracked my (helmeted) noggin on a rock. Blacked out, sorta, for a couple of seconds. That was enough roller-blading for me. Made 41 HF contacts this afternoon. I got spotted by two stations in India, but I didn't hear them. Must be something wrong with their xmtrs

gp - nice! I hit France on last weekend's SOTA hike. I'll be in the Midwest next month; maybe I'll be able to get some more QRP contacts across the pond.

Captain America No. 1 kept in a cardboard box for 80 years sells for $716,750
I've got a box of old comics somewhere in the attic but nothing in it from earlier than the 80s. There is a special issue of Marvel Comics and DC Comics Presents The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans from 1982, I believe, in there somewhere that's worth maybe $15 or $20. That's probably one of the most valuable that's in there. Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 17, 2026 07:31 PM (6ydKt) 86
Berserker, I found a video of a guy who builds and repairs instruments. I thought of you.
In this one, he found the Fender Telecaster cutting board that Fender authorized. He figured it was a terrible cutting board, but then he decided to make it into a Fender Telecaster.
