I'm writing this on the 13th so the event hasn't occurred yet, although I am now within striking distance of Corsicana. Future Weasel assures me it was a great time, as always. So, in the spirit of taunting those who chose not to attend, please consider the following conversation starters: - Did you go? - Did you have fun? - Did you shoot? - Rifles, handguns, or both? - How about the food? - Was it amazing or what? - Did you see a lot of your pals? Newcomers: - Were you surprised by the funness and coolness of the event? - Was it what you expected? - What was the best part for you? - Did you make a bunch of new in-person friends? - Think you will be back? 10/18/26 Update Yikes! was that a good time, or what? I just finished day 1 of the drive home and wanted to share some thoughts. First, huge thank you to Ben Had, Rancher Bob and Cow Horse Queen for organizing and hosting the TXMoMe. Next, a big shout out to all those who created and executed the menu of outstanding food over two days. I'm still full! Next, an extra-bigly thank you to all the RSO's who spent two days on the handgun and rifle ranges keeping everyone safe and having a great time. Next, a shout out to our pal rhomboid for donating two nice boxes of cigars for the cool kids to enjoy, and to everyone who brought drinks and snacks and desserts for the group to share. Finally, thanks to all of the Morons who attended and continue to make the event the highlight of my year. Thank you! That's it folks! Please discuss in the comments below! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? Got to the range for the first time in three years. Started with a plain old 22 LR High Standard revolver. 22 LR is a great starter cartridge because you don't want to develop a flinch and I had to check to see if hand pain/finger strength was an issue. Had a few bobbles while firing about 100 rounds at a diagnostic set of targets as the older revolver did not like 22 LR minimags much resulting in hard ejection and two misfires probably related to too hot ammo for the old revolver. Something like Thunderbolt is probably a better choice for this revolver.
But shot straight, kept all shots within a 4 inch circle at 5/7/10 yards and spent my time working on full reset of trigger. Which is one of the reasons that revolvers force you to use proper trigger technique in double action--heavier 12-15 lb pull and to keep it straight, you have properly 'row' the trigger back and forth without pushing the firearm to the right or left and you have to do a full reset rather than trying to catch the link. Range report: New bullets edition.
So, yesterday was our monthly 1,000 yard club match. Conditions were filthy yet a couple of our shooters did quite well, with one of our guys going 5X's first five shots. We all thought he was going to get a 100 but, alas, one shot dropped into the nine ring. Still, though, conditions were such it was remarkable shooting. As for myself, I'd decided I needed to try a bullet with a little better downrange performance. I picked up some Berger Long Range Hybrids and my initial testing said they should be good. (sub .4 MOA @ 100 yards.) But, 100 yards isn't 1,000 yards so, took the results with grain of salt. I started off well, 2 in the 10 ring and one X. Things were looking good then I missed a wind call, got into the 8 ring and couldn't get back where I was. Finished with an 89. The positive, though, was, this was one of my better performances under adverse conditions and, I know what I did wrong. Normally, I dial the initial correction for windage and change my hold as conditions warrant. This time, I dialed and it was a big mistake because the wind shift was temporary. Ah well, live and learn. Posted by: Blake - semi lurker in marginal standing at October 18, 2026 07:19 PM (eGzf1) 32

So, since the 22 LR was fine, I pulled out a Third Generation Smith and Wesson 9mm. The heavy 5946 with is double action only (DAO). Lighter trigger pull than the 22 LR revolver but still about 9-10 lbs but very smooth trigger pull with a short reset.
Then the fun began. Had a combination of Remington 115 lb gr range ammo and Federal 124 gr. American Eagle. Again, shooting at diagnostic targets. In every case, I nailed the first 4-5 shots but then either had a malfunction (extractor failed to pull the empty out of the chamber) or my shots started going lower with higher dispersion (strength issue most probably). Shot full box of 124 gr Federal and about half of the Remington. Both shot to point of aim at 7-10 yards. But more malfunctions with the Remington. So, need to check the extractor for proper hold on the cartridge--not chipped on inspection, etc. so either a crud issue (within extractor recess or behind the extractor hook), or a tired ejector spring. A force gauge is necessary to check the correct degree of pull and I will probably have to buy one just for that purpose. Hoping it isn't the spring as Third Generation S&W are a pain to remove the extractor pin. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 07:19 PM (E4rtv) 34

Hello, Weasel! Sorry for not being there in TX this year. Got in some practice this weekend w/ my CC9 and Colt Python snubnose as penance. I tried to shoot as many rounds as I could w/ the CC9 using only one hand. I tried to get through a whole box of ammo for the Python shooting it only in double action. Both still need improvement.

The 5906 and 5946 are two all steel heavy pistols which is why I chose it for my first trip out. Weight makes felt recoil less and the 5946 weight about 40 oz without ammo putting it close to an all steel 1911 with a much punier cartridge. Felt recoil was fine, arm strength though to hold it over time started to fade on 10 round strings though and as said above, I could tell it was time to quit.
FWIW, if your accuracy starts dropping off over extended shooting with your initial shots on target--it is either a grip/trigger fundamentals starting downhill or declining strength issue or both. Quit shooting in that case and reevaluate what the cause is on the next string. Concentrate on Weasel Trigger Fu and fundamentals and if that doesn't help, then it is likely your hands and arms might be done for the day. Not much different than shooting long arms, you can shoot perfectly accurately but then start to fade as time goes on. That is a time to quit before you start in developing bad habits. I know the spawn shot close to 1000 rounds on Saturday alone, the majority in 9mm. She wasn't as successful on the rifle range Sunday but did get the Springfield 1903 out to 200 years before it started hurting too much. Duty day was this past week. Again, surprised at the paucity of guys coming and taking 10-15 shots with their scoped bolt-action rifles. This time of year typically swamped (for first few hours) with such traffic.
Thanks to a self-inflicted (apparently) condition, was in no shape to shoot. Probably over-did a particular phase of a resistance workout and currently have trouble putting on a shirt. But there was a very nice, somewhat crazy Mexican-American guy, with his two nieces, taking them for their birthday shoot. I opened our smallest range for them and stayed late so they could finish their shootin'. He had an impressive quantity/variety of boom-sticks and pistols he brought. One of the nieces, um, well, beautified the range dramatically, made it easier to indulge their after-hours shooting. Posted by: rhomboid at October 18, 2026 07:29 PM (U/Byj) 52

sock_rat_eez, Blake, and RI Red, thanks. I have been practicing dry fire but live fire is a lot more fun.
Next trip might be AR time or at least my Rossi 357 lever action carbine even though I hate firing rifles on an indoor range. The other option is a revolver shoot. I have always found shooting revolvers, particularly snubbies to improve my rifle shooting. You have to do everything just so on snubbies for accuracy which carries forth on shooting rifles again. Just glad pain after was not excessive and I could still hold aim true on the pistols I shot. It was the strength that was lacking in the hands and arms plus some technical issues with both pistols. Haven't shot the High Standard ever as I bought it and cleaned it up about two years ago. Last time I shot the 5946 was about 5 years ago because at that time, I was using a Springfield XD-45 for a house gun. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 07:34 PM (E4rtv) 59

Posted by: Scuba_Dude at October 18, 2026 07:15 PM (IOnsU) I find that taking I-20 is a bit longer, but crossing the Mississippi at Vicksburg is a lot less congested than Memphis. Vicksburg is also a bit more conducive for taking a break from the road and exploring. The Vicksburg National Military Park Visitors' Center is less than five minutes from the I-20 exit, and there are some nice places to eat in the old Civil War era city center, some with great views of the oxbow lake that was the Mississippi in 1861-65. The salvaged ironclad USS Cairo is on display in the National Military Park. And Vicksburg isn't anywhere near as crime ridden as Memphis is. Posted by: Ed L at October 18, 2026 07:38 PM (z32fn) 62

Needless to say, she is as happy as George on a giant patch of fresh clover. We have determined that she has the exact same anticipation flinch as her husband. Question for The Horde: Is it OK to play music in your ear buds (under your hearing protection) during a range session? I think if I get her even more relaxed and slightly distracted while she is shooting, we can minimize her flinch. Is this a good idea or a terrible one for safety reasons? Ye Olde refurbishment shop since last week is going okay. Have a stubborn barrel on a Lee Enfield No 4, Mk 1 to remove. Those were torqued to about 120 ft lbs or so against the barrel ring compared with the older No. 1. Mk. 3 which like most Mausers, has an internal ring that the barrel is torqued to rather than the receiver ring itself. No. 1 barrels are a lot easier to remove.
So, I either cut the barrel carefully around the receiver ring with a hacksaw, etc. which relieves the torque, or I take it to my gunsmith to remove as he has a hydraulic press barrel vise which gets barrels off and he has a lathe to use a parting tool if it comes to that. The receiver is a relatively uncommon BSA No. 4 Lee Enfield and has the original WWII barrel so I might just do better to buy a receiver from Sarco that already has its barrel removed. Problem is that it is a Fazakerley No. 4 Mk 2 which uses a few different parts than the No. 4 because the trigger is no longer mounted on the trigger guard but instead on a new boss added to the bottom of the receiver. You come across converted No. 4, Mk 1 postwar to this standard under the No. 4 Mk 1/2 or 1/3 markings. Boss is brazed to reciever. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 07:45 PM (E4rtv) 71

She Hobbit, those "lanceros" aren't as intimidating as they look. Nice, distinctive and medium profile (some say distinct citrus note). But is prudent to light one up when you've got time to burn. Those Undercrown Maduros are in my top 5 for sure. The cocoa note is always there.

I'm not sure how desirable the Ruger brand is in the collecting community, or if any of the individual models to be discontinued are more desirable than others. We'll soon find out. It's also possible that production could continue for some or all of these models, but only in batches with who knows how many years in between each batch.
Posted by: Ed L ======= There are probably more hard core Ruger collectors than milsurp types by numbers. Particularly the different variants put out by big gun distribution warehouses. This was a patently stupid decision by Ruger, perhaps, as a poison pill action because Beretta wants to buy Ruger and Ruger has been resisting. Beretta already has a big chunk of shares in Ruger. Most of the remaining products are all derivative crap that you can buy as good if not better from other makers. Ruger was a leader in revolvers making probably the top best made factory production revolvers in the business--better than Colt, better than Smith and Wesson, and certainly better than Taurus. The reason was investment casting technology that Bill Ruger developed and that Ruger overdesigned all of his revolvers for extreme longevity. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 07:52 PM (E4rtv) 82
Haven't kept up, but subtracting all those models from Ruger's line-up leaves them with ...... what? Quick glance the list includes almost every Ruger model I know, have shot, or thought about getting.

Everyone, there's something about The Horde I want you to understand.
The horde embodies the America you remember. Great people getting together for a friendly gathering to enjoy themselves. A fun atmosphere of camaraderie with like minded conservatives, talking, laughing, renewing old friendships and creating new ones. Lots of great food, drink and conversation in a comfortable venue with extremely gracious and enthusiastic hosts. There's beer, wine and hooch. And snacks. And food. Did I mention food? (Good Lord, they roasted an entire pig!) And music. And karaoke. And dancing. And yes, there's guns. But only IF you're so inclined. It's not a gathering of bunker mentality gun nuts. But if you want a place to bring your pistol or rifle and practice and learn from experienced shooters with a strong emphasis on safety, well, that America still exists. This is the Horde. This is the Texas MoMe. This is America. Posted by: Quarter Twenty at October 18, 2026 07:59 PM (uGZRR) 96

Posted by: sock_rat_eez Yep. Bill Ruger made markets by introducing new designs. The mgmt since he died seem to be typical MBA types that worried more about cheap derivatives of other company's designs rather than new path breaking ones for Ruger. Ruger used to have a fair chunk of the semi auto market with its P Series which promptly led to several relatively bad series of handguns under the new management. The SR series which never did particularly well compared to the P series and the newest American series that simply is not selling. Even Smith and Wesson seem to be doing better recently than Ruger on new innovative designs as is Colt. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 08:02 PM (E4rtv) 105

Thanks for the background about the Ruger/Beretta soap opera. Ditching their most storied products, especially the revolver lineup, would make for one heck of a poison pill. I think if I get her even more relaxed and slightly distracted while she is shooting, we can minimize her flinch. Is this a good idea or a terrible one for safety reasons? Posted by: Pillage Idiot ---- I have heard of shooters that play music on their electronic hearing protection but not on separate ear buds under ear muffs. The electronic hearing protection is made to let voices in but gun fire out. During competition the shooters can hear people talking but their hearing is protected from all the gunfire. I have sat on the firing line for the whole day with pretty much constant firing going on but can still hear the RSO commands. You just need to look into different types of electronic hearing protection made specifically for gunfire noise. Do not use ear buds made for listening to music or phones. I like the rack where you have the "U" formed by the index finger and thumb of the right hand on the grip, and you make the "U" of your left hand on the slide face directly opposite the other U. You can then push your elbows closer together with the bigger muscles in your shoulders to rack the slide. You might have to rotate your stance slightly to the right, so your weapon is facing in a safe direction down range when you rack that way. You might clear your weapon and try it at home and see if that is easier for you? Posted by: Pillage Idiot at October 18, 2026 08:24 PM (HlyYF) 128
Continued from Guns and Ammo story,
While these cuts are extensive, Ruger has plenty of major lines remaining that will be continuing onward: Pistols: LCP, RXM, MAX-9, Security, Ruger-5.7 and Mark IV families. Ed L, I'm curious. Any general impressions to share on the CC9.
Posted by: YellowBird at October 18, 2026 07:57 PM (MEbkQ) Bottom line: I think it's worth the money. I'd recommend it, even w/o any optics. Pluses: - Accuracy: I shot 2" groups at 7 yards using both hands today. It'll do the job if you do yours. - Ergonomics: I think it fits my hand better than any other compact carry 9mm handgun on the market. My benchmarks of comparison are the SIG P365 and SCCY. It's also a lot easier to field strip for cleaning than the Glock or SIG. It also comes with full ambi controls right out of the box. - Reliability: I've shot several hundred rounds through my CC9 in the last year or so. The only malfunction I've had was a dud round, so it wasn't the gun's fault. Minuses: - Cost. This is the biggest minus. You can get decent compact carry handguns for a couple hundred less than what H&K will charge you. Magazines are $50 each. - 10 round magazine: The 10 round magazine leaves my pinky finger half floating in the air. I need to use the slightly longer 12 round magazine to get a full grip with all my fingers on the pistol. - Stiff recoil spring: This might be a bit difficult to rack. Posted by: Ed L They are their own subset of collectors similar to S&W collectors with 20th century arms. Colt is odd for collectors, they made some excellent revolvers that are not named after snakes but these bring much less on the market due to less demand than similar Smith and Wesson products of the same vintage. My guess is that people are afraid of these revolvers being out of time, somewhat excessively from my experience. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 08:28 PM (E4rtv) 133

You might do better with shooting a long arm first. A nice 22 LR rifle might fit what you need. Easier for beginning marksmen to learn to shoot long arms than handguns because three points of support are better and easier than two and a longer sight distance on long arms is easier to pick up for many than on handguns. Triggers on longarms can be better too. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 08:43 PM (E4rtv) 155

Posted by: Ed L Smith and Wesson did the CNC move in the 1990's which is why the 3rd Generation is probably their best steel/aluminum lines in DA/SA semi autos. Colt's old style revolvers simply required artisan finishing of a really complicated lock work design when skilled labor and materials were cheap enough that Colt could make good money on them. Smiths had a easier and cheaper to make design on revolvers which is why Colt steadily lost ground in the 1950's to Smith in the police business for revolvers. From a user standpoint, don't care much about collecting value, Colt made better revolvers and had better metallurgy up to about the late 1950's. Fit and finish were better, single action with the old 1899 lockwork was like a bank vault lockup, and double action, while it stacked, could be comparable to Smith's lockwork action prior to the late 40's. Fit and finish on a regular Colt was superior to Smiths and the dry observation that Colt did not need a pin to retain the barrel because it knew how to torque barrels properly was in fact true. At the high end, Smiths have equal fit and finish and started to pull away from Colt before the Bangor Punta debacle damn near wrecked Smith and Wesson. Ruger took advantage of a declining Colt and a struggling quality issue with Smith to get into the police market with damn fine Security series revolvers. Posted by: Ed L ==== Yep. I agree. Glad to see their return, especially with this news from Ruger. Even if Ruger intends to restart production at some future date, the market may not be there if and when they try to return. Taurus is improving quality substantially on its revolvers and Colt has returned. And Smith still has a loyal set of customers for its wares. There may not be a market space for a Ruger return because the revolver market is shrinking with fewer and fewer new shooters even knowing how to shoot them. It is a shame because for learning how to shoot, revolvers because they can fire a variety of bullet weights and charges, are excellent teaching tools. And still the tops if you plan to hunt with a handgun or use one for bear protection. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 09:13 PM (E4rtv) 205

MCarbo which technically is M*CARBO sells springs and shims to improve your Mosin Nagant trigger quite a bit among other things.
Finns figured out a way to improve the Mosin Nagant trigger as well and I think Smith Sights has continued that by offering a way to upgrade the lousy Russki trigger (and you can revert easily if you need to sell it) to the Finn Standard. Posted by: Count de Monet at October 18, 2026 09:02 PM (wVcYX) To be fair, I was only there about 3 hours as my nerves got the better of me and I wanted to get home when it was still light out. It was a lightning round of names and faces so I’m not sure who I met or didn’t meet. So yes, next year! Posted by: TxAnn at October 18, 2026 09:26 PM (itAg7) 215
208 The Ruger SFAR made quite an impression on the rifle range last year.
Posted by: Duncanthrax ======== Yeah, they kinda copied POF's Revolution I think which had marketed a similar smaller AR sized frame for a 308 barrel and receiver which was all proprietary parts. When Bill Ruger died, innovations pretty much stopped at Ruger and you got the era of copying successful designs from other countries and reliance on customers for Ruger's older classic designs. Ruger's announcement pretty much dumps the older customer base for classic designs and is keeping the derivative designs instead. MBA executive think rather than executives that are thinking of innovative gun designs and manufacturing techniques like Bill Ruger did. Pretty sad. Same reason I hope Elon has a long life--the dweebs that succeed such giants are generally forgettable organization types. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 09:26 PM (E4rtv) 216

Disco Doof did make another fabulous MoMe appearance on Saturday night.
Yet again, Doof was taking a nap and missed the festivities. (That guy has the worst luck!) Posted by: Pillage Idiot at October 18, 2026 08:13 PM (HlyYF) I always miss his appearances. I'm starting to suspect something suspicious. Posted by: Doof at October 18, 2026 09:32 PM (QMAsf) 224

Yo, RMBS!
I have heard no 1000 yard talk. Not even humble brags. What gives? Posted by: RI Red at October 18, 2026 09:32 PM 1,000 yards might have had a hit. Can't confirm. Beat the hell out of the 700, though. Posted by: RedMindBlueState at October 18, 2026 09:44 PM (7o23p) 234
Since we are nearing the end of the thread. Some more boring Lee Enfield stuff. The No. 4 Mk 2 and the retrofitted No. 4 Mk 1/2 or 1/3, are supposedly a bit more accurate than the bog standard No. 4 Mk 1. The trigger being hung from the receiver rather than a relatively flimsy trigger guard is part of it, and the receiver stock draws area of teh No. 4 Mk 2 and retrofits geometry is different. The No. 4 Mk 2 and retrofitted Mk 1/2 and Mk 1/3 do not use the same stock forend that the No. 4 Mk 1 does and the draws (these are recoil absorbing areas on the relatively flimsy Lee Enfield forend that are critical for the receiver to not to be wobbly shit. These draws exist on all Lee Enfields and often a reason why they can shoot erratically. Wood can dry out or become oil soaked and these small areas develop gaps that the recoil on the receiver can cause to accuracy to decline as the receiver is no longer properly held by the forend.
Austrialians used to use copper shims on their No. 1 rifles nailed these into place to protect them from recoil and from damage. The other method on a damage Lee Enfield forend is to glue and splice in a new draw area--usually best for both sides Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 09:45 PM (E4rtv) 235

I am distressed with the discontinuation news. Any talk re relocation from NH? Posted by: RI Red None, I think it is more related to driving off Beretta but I think the end of revolver production is going to have an immediate hit on some assembly line employment. Dunno how these are allocated by factory site. AZ used to do some of the revolver stuff and I think the original hq in Southport and factory has long been shut down. Ruger is now headquartered in NC where its factory is that handles a lot of the Marlin level actions among other lines. Posted by: whig at October 18, 2026 09:47 PM (E4rtv) 237
