Thursday Overnight Open Thread - October 15, 2026 [scampydog]

Doggo Sunset.jpg

Welcome to the Thursday ONT. Double feature/content o'plenty edition. Your regular Thursday host (Doof) has surrendered the keys for the evening. He's off to Texas to meet with people who know each other by their AoSHQ handles, puns, and various online pleasantries.

We will keep the one-night transition (not transaction) mostly peaceful. Keeping the lights on, the doors open, and the comment section moderately unsupervised.

*****

Ronco Doggo.jpg

James Bond had Q for his gadgets. We consumers got Ron Popeil and Ronco for ours. The Salad Spinner, Miracle Brush, Mr. Microphone, Pocket Fisherman, and more. Ronco history. Who got sucked in and made a purchase?

Ronco refined its marketing and distribution techniques with its second televised product, the "Chop-O-Matic." Produced by Popeil Brothers, this "food chopper with rotating blades" had been peddled by Ron Popeil on the fair circuit since the late 1950s. Not only was the commercial for this device longer, at five minutes, but Ronco also made this its first mail-order product. Delighted with the Chop-O-Matic's success, Sam Popeil invented and manufactured the Dial-O-Matic and what would become Ronco's first blockbuster, the Veg-O-Matic. Ron Popeil's television ad fueled the sale of over nine million units for $50 million worth of these rather primitive food processors.

A section of news for those who like their ONT with a side of aggravation.

No new features have been added, your deductible is still enormous, and your preferred doctor may no longer be in network. Thank you for being a valued customer.

Congratulations! Your health insurance premium is going up again. Ignore the explainers in the article. Check out the chart.

Universities cutting ties with foreign groups?

The Department of War mandated the universities conduct a review of their foreign partnerships following its updates to a list of "foreign institutions engaging in problematic activities." Reports were due at the beginning of this school year.

The American Association of University Professors challenged the Department of War's audit along with the American Federation of Teachers in August.

Of course they challenged. That's what commies do. People who are deeply invested in an ideology react defensively to information that threatens them/it. It's not confirmation bias if you call it ideological consistency. At least, that's what the Confirmation Bias Department would like you to believe.

Economic reform is a long game. Summary of Javier Milei over at American Thinker and his battle against socialism. Worth a read.

The cancer of socialism metastasizes into every area of society -- the chemotherapy requires more time than a single presidency.

Update from commenter mindful webworker.

mindful update 10-15-26.jpg

Update here.

Predicting the future: the commentariat will hyperventilate. We should ready ourselves for the usual lectures about decorum, solemn denunciations, and grave warnings about the deplorable portion of society. I expect a parade of earnest pundits lecturing us that the real scandal is the response (public firing squad) rather than Nidal Hasan's actions (murdering 13 people).

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has announced that the execution of convicted Fort Hood Islamist terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan will be "PUBLIC," with American soldiers carrying out the firing squad at the very military installation where Hasan murdered 13 people and wounded 32 others in 2009.

The ONT is here for: 1) those of you currently evading the U.S. Marshals or considering it as a future career pivot, and 2) those committed to maintaining operational readiness.

A few friendly reminders from the world of being on the run: Predictable routines are a gift to anyone trying to find you. Burner phones are not magical talismans. And purchasing a black turtleneck does not, in fact, make you invisible to federal law enforcement nor does it make you Archer. US Marshals. They are decidely unimpressed by your burner phone.

The thing that sticks with you after that video isn’t some secret gadget or Hollywood manhunt trick. It’s the patience of it. US Marshals can work through the ordinary leftovers of a person’s life until the hiding place starts getting smaller… an old address that still matters, somebody who knows more than they realize, a car that turns up in the right area, or a routine that finally becomes predictable enough to be useful.

*****

Now we know. Tungsten Carbide Pins. Sounds techy - I don't know enough about it to render judgment on accuracy. Fun and curious reading, however.

In automotive assembly, for example, fixture plates use carbide pins to locate body panels during welding. The pins slide into corresponding holes, ensuring each panel sits in precisely the right position before robotic welders do their work. Because these fixtures cycle thousands of times per day, the pins need to resist wear that would gradually enlarge the holes and degrade positioning accuracy. The same principle applies in:
• Aerospace jigs for composite layup and drilling operations
• Electronics manufacturing where circuit boards require precise positioning
• Medical device assembly where tolerances are measured in micrometers
• Tool and die construction for stamping and forming operations

Rooftop bar? No.

Pelts Doggo.jpg

As seen at a watering hole. When someone says they want the authentic travel experience...this is exactly the type of joint they mean.

It's almost winter. Who doesn't want to know how fur coats are made?

Betting there are a few fur coats and hats tucked away in the closets of the Horde.

*****

Vespa? No, but seems to fit the humor.

Good Thing Doggo.jpg

Mystery click. Of course.

*****

Flavacol Doggo.jpg

The magic of Flavacol and popcorn.

And while we're at it, for those who actually read the content, and the two of you smarty-pants readers who actually don't already know: the science behind the Alberger process.

*****

stare down doggo and doe.jpg

Nothing like an old-fashioned stare down.

Let's do some movie stare downs. What do you have Horde? The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? Clubber Lang and Rocky? News Team Stare Down in The Anchorman?

*****

Two musical selections for your entertainment. Enjoy, complain, or suggest better ones - use tinyurl or similar if linking. Don't blow out the margins!

*****

Questions of the moment. What perfectly reasonable life moment has you questioning things?

Surely the package carriers know what's inside those boxes going to Exact Sciences Laboratories. Right?

Can anyone actually interpret a bill from a doctor visit?

When did saying, "I am so busy" become an excuse rather than a problem to be solved? Further, why is the person who identifies the problem often labeled as the problem?

This ONT was brought to you by Bucket List Beauties - Dream Vacation Spots

Whitehaven Beach Whitsunday.jpg

Whitehaven Beach, located on Whitsunday Island, off the coast of Airlie Beach, Queensland, Australia.

The photo above shows Hill Inlet. Apparently the tides move the sand through the turquoise waters creating the swirly looking things of awesomeness. The beach itself is 4 miles of the finest sand in the world. 98% pure silica. No public roads - it is on an island. Boat or aircraft only.

Some great images and facts here and here.

What's on your dream vacation list?

DISCLAIMER: This brief ONT appearance does not constitute a return to regular service, an expression of renewed commitment, or an indication that you or I have learned anything from tonight. All future ONT appearances are subject to availability, inclination, weak moments, amnesia, and the Bacardi to mixer ratio. Safe travels to the Texas adventurers.

So robots have to worry about positioning their pins for holes and need to resist enlarging holes?
Humans have treatments for that.

Some people found some rather insulting things. For my part, can't argue with what they say. "Has a cat," yeah, thanks for rubbing it in. One puzzles me, though: "Does not understand their own creative works." I mean, yes, but who told them that?

I never once clicked on any volume in the "How To Understand Your Creative Works" series, despite the attractive faux leather and gilt titling. Also, what's with the "their"? I'm not that kind of mutant!

21 I remember watching a program on the western NHK channel about some prefecture in Japan. A visitor wandering around different parts, learning about more country-side places. One of the stops was at a salt manufacturer that did it the historical way. They would take sea water, constantly boiling it and evaporating the water part of it.

Just as the article on the Alberger process says, the salt would crystalize, forming pyramids. Was rather cool to watch.

You can construct a 3D space like this, a 3D manifold version of the Klein bottle, and put a Arthur C. Clarke mirror "boundary" in it.

You walk into what looks like a mirror. You set into a mirror___ version of the world you just left. It's the same space, you just crossed back into it. To someone watching you do that, it looks as if you stepped into the mirror, and your reflection just popped back out.

You think nothing happened to you, the world flipped handedness. The world thinks you flipped handedness.

That just pisses me the shit off - in part 'cos I just sold 2 of my Gibsons from the '70s. One was a ’72 Les Paul Custom (black) and the other was a ’73 ES 335 12-string double-cutaway (sunburst). Beautiful instruments - and I'd NEVER think about treating them the way 'rock stars' treated theirs … but, good vid even if it did piss me off …

When I worked for a short time with the USPS sorting center we would get medical boxes marked "biohazard" on them, that were coming from medical clinics and going to be disposed of in a sanitary manner.

Yeah, I used to think there was some logic to it, even if it’s twisted or wishful thinking or believing what they want to believe.

But every single time, it turns out they were doing whatever evils they accused others of, usually more egregiously than their accusations.

You could probably make a name for yourself as a prosecutor by looking at Democrat accusations and then investigating the accuser for exactly that. Most of the time it turns out they weren’t even hiding it. They just seem to assume no one will look or care, which makes me wonder why they made the accusations to begin with. They must have some sense that it’s wrong.

To destroy someone it is first required to dehumanize them. Basically throw them out of the "collective us" the group that it is possible the empathize with.
Hammer on the [person] is a [violator of norms] or [ally of our enemy] or [traitor] and then move to number two, which is descrimination, and on to destruction.

One of the more interesting things to read is an essay on the ten steps to genocide that is out of the Holocaust movement. Of course then you will be sickened by the Rules for Radicals, or most political agitation that is run as a moral panic.

I constantly have to remind myself that any US President has constituencies that go far beyond my tribe. Far beyond the US. He is playing to a global audience with almost everything he does. And no US President in my lifetime plays to a bigger one than Trump.

He literally is playing multi-dimensional chess with moves like this while he is dealing with a balance of power in the Middle East and beyond and trying to build coalitions and doing deals with countries that are trying to bring their people around to the idea of breaking their tribal bonds and going in a new direction and at the same time keeping his own tribe happy.

I probably would've watched the execution but I wouldn't fault anyone on our side who wouldn't. But mostly I'm glad he will face justice finally. I can live with the compromise.

Cats are very smell-oriented, which is why they are always marking everything, including you, as their territory. Their ancestors were loners who actually did change behavior due to humans, forming groups around human settlements. They mark us as part of their group and are generally closest to those with the strongest smell of the group.

Same as Leslie Nielsen's previous serious roles. I see him as Frank Drebin everywhere, and everything he says makes me laugh, and then I expect he's going to stumble around and set everything on fire.

235 What does a salad spinner do, exactly? I sort of remember the ads but forget what it was for.
Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at October 15, 2026 11:34 PM (i2z9z)

Wash the lettuce, chop as needed, put in the spinner and it pulls all the loose water out so you don't have wet salad.

The Late Mrs. was perennially late to any and all functions. AND, she was late to her own funeral: After the boys and I arrived at the funeral home for her service, the funeral director called me over and whispered - "Uh, there's a small issue with Tam. She won't be ready for another hour or so."

Found out later they had some sort of equipment failure but yeah, she was late to her own funeral.

That was so her.

I almost never eat raw veggies of any kind anymore...I'm too susceptible to getting sick. Cooked veggies for me, thank you.

At my wife's funeral, I mentioned that, given we both had health issues crop up repeatedly at almost the same time, that we would argue about who would go first; she always insisted that she should, which I'd vehemently oppose. Like most arguments, she won, but as I said at her eulogy, I finally had the last word...and that was, that one day we'd be together again, but my path was just a bit longer.

240 I have a salad spinner. Damned thing is a pain in the ass to clean, but it sure does work.

Centrifugal force to dry lettuce. Which is not nearly as cool as what publius shared about intermediate axis.

Posted by: scampydog at October 15, 2026 11:40 PM (41CYW)

242 @233 - the new Arrow 4K of "Forbidden Planet" puts that to rest. He's not bad, just very stiff and it's hard to imagine the female lead falling for him.

And I just put "very stuff and it's hard" into a comment here. Damn me. I'm not the worst but in the neighborhood.

243 The intermediate principal axis being unstable is a cool demonstration with a textbook and a large rubber band to keep the book closed. Do NOT use a metallic clip or you risk cutting up your hands!

244 >>Any normal politician would have just said that, and it would never have been aired or discussed. Instead, Hegseth says, we’re going to do it and it’s going to be broadcast live and the media can’t help but spread the word about how much the left cares about a mass shooter more than they care about us.

There's that but I think he is considering a much wider audience. Trump is trying to realign the Middle East, along with a few other regions, and trying to get governments with their own crazy leftists for lack of a better term to follow his lead.

Having Hasan executed by firing squad is going to send a powerful message that if you fuck with Americans we will kill you. That shows strength and that is one thing Arabs respect. Broadcasting it might be seen in a different light by people we want to stop being savages.

Having done business in the ME I know they respect strength but if you give them a reason to think you've gone too far they will find a reason to justify why you are worse than the criminal. Stupid but real.

Hasan will be dead. Justice done. That's my primary goal.

I just looked that handedness flipping 3-manifold thing up, and I was suspecting that requires 5D to embed. It takes 5 dimensions to allow a 3D space to flip handedness like that. 4D wouldn't be enough. You need one more dimension to do the bending without messing up something.

My guess is that space is at something of a premium in the car. Plus, the T top thing seems to be the way a lot of the retractable convertible tops are going (see Miata.) I am... not a huge fan of the look. If you want a convertible, get a soft top and get the visibility.
