Monday Overnight Open Thread (10/12/26) Happy Columbus Day Edition

IMG_5091.jpeg

[Mis. Hum. original, 24"x 30" acrylic]

The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“While sanctuary politicians continue to release dangerous criminals onto their streets, our brave law enforcement officers will continue to risk their lives to arrest these heinous criminals and make America safe again. Illegal aliens have no sanctuary in America,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin

Quote II
They’re saying, well, you voted to confirm them. I said, I voted with the unanimous vote out of Senate Armed Services Committee. Now I’m telling you, I fucked up and he needs to go. What else do we need to talk about? Soon to be retired Senator Thom Tillis (RINO-NC)

Quote III

“Mount Sinai is committed to ensuring that our patients have access to high-quality care while also maintaining the resources necessary to serve our communities,” Mount Sinai representative Lucia Lee

Things that make me chuckle..............

I'm not a science guy. That's why I enjoy when friend of the blog Robert Zimmerman takes the time to share with us. NASA releases its space station requirements; opens bidding for the contract to build one or more

You can download all the documents for this RFP here. From the RFP cover letter:

This competitive acquisition will result in a Multi-Award Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract with the ability to issue Firm-Fixed-Priced (FFP) task orders. The contract will have an effective ordering period of 8 years from the contract effective date, and two (2) option periods to extend the ordering period as follows: a 4-year Option Period 1 and a 3-year Option Period 2 for a total potential ordering period of 15 years.

The anticipated contract award date is April 15, 2027, with an effective date occurring on the same day as the award. The contracts will primarily be performed off-site at the Contractor’s facilities; Contractors may perform some aspect of the work on-site at NASA centers as enabled by NASA Collaborations or Government Task Agreements.

42 One fond memory of walking by Mount Sinai Hospital in the 70s was some black yutes opening the fire hydrant next to a Triumph Spitfire convertible that was parked illegally close to the hydrant with the top down. Probably someone parked quick and ran into the hospital (a doc, maybe). The youngsters were directing the flow of the water into the car and it was full up to the tops of the doors. I didn't hang about to see when the owner returned. You walk quickly with your head down in that neighborhood. The main hospital is on the Upper West side, but this was one of their facilities in Harlem. I rode/drove in a car pool that parked at 125th and Lexington. Hop the express, get to Midtown in minutes. The lot itself had an attendant and was safe to park in.

54 Evening, Columbus Dayers,

We just finished Season One of Hap & Leonard, the series based on Joe R. Lansdale's crime novels. If this first season was based on the first novel in the series, I need to find it. Talk about intense . . . and there are several points where you wonder if the heroes are going to make it out of the severely tight spot they are in. They have to, it's a TV series (however limited -- six eps a season), but you really wonder.

Anyway! How was your Dia de Cristobal Colon?

75 Egad, that fuel story....
FTA:
A sump sample before engine start would have shown the difference, and that check stays with the pilot no matter who fueled the airplane.

That last part is so important. So true of so many things, but the consequences of passing off the responsibility in something like aviation are so very profound.

I hope the FOB or fueling company is paying for the "substantial damage to the right engine mount, fuselage, and empennage".

Warning volley for sure.

Our first pup, Shepherd/Malamute/Husky aka Gilda, potty trained herself. Never peed or pooped in the house from age 8wks. Dude showed up with her when we were engaged as I "needed protection." No, he needed a dog as his parents were no pet people (mother, anyway). He only had salmonella green turtles where I lived on a farm zoo.

Gilda would go to the front door and hit it with her paw and stare at you to let her out. Would sleep in the snow during the day as she loved it.

Had her neutered. When she got home I was petting her on the couch. I guess she was so relieved to be home her spincter opened and a tidy turd appeared on the couch. That was it for her entire life of genteel living.

She did try to kill a peeping Tom or thief one day protecting me.

Should have been trained as a K9. Very smart. Smiled on command. Understood soccer rules with her tennis balls (goal was her not used dog house). Our first baby.

People cross country skiing (which she also loved) thought she was a fancy Akita vs a free puppy.

The last time I was in Penn Station NYC was over a decade ago. Like a giant urinal stench.

I would not ride a NYC subway anymore if paid a lot of money or without a SEAL Team with me.

Our crazy eldest, on a Broadway musical tour in college, was nearly stabbed going back to NJ on a subway at 1am. He knew nothing good happens after midnight. He and his friend were alone on a car and a black guy was between cars, begging to get in, with the stabber right behind him. They got off when it stopped and ran.

The SaxMan has nearly put me in an early urn (I can't say grave anymore as we are being cremated and sharing a drawer we still have to pick out).

96 64 Every little splinter or cut I got there got infected.

I have that problem. In my tool bag, in the bathroom and wherever I am there is a can of Dermoplast, First Aid. Not to be confused with Pain Relief. It is the last remaining brand of pressurized antiseptic. Shake it up and hold the nozzle close to the spot and spray until the antiseptic hits the bottom. The force of the spray cleans the wound as well as killing germs.
You can't wait, do it immediately. That's why the can is on hand.

400,000 were directly employed, millions more indirectly employed.

Only an idiot would say “we should spend that money on the poor”. As if it is an “either/or” matter in the first place, and the arguments get more retarded from there.

I. was waiting to make e left turn from a side road onto a main road, not too much traffic. I looked to my right, but it was late afternoon. And the road was aligned so that I looked straight into the sun and really couldn’t see shit. Foolishly, I just thought “well I don’t see anything coming” and pulled out to merge onto the main road…

And merged right into the side of a police car that happened to be there. Luckily I got off light - I think he thought it was kind of funny.

Fortunately the New Mexico cop that snagged me 1) was tailgating the semi he was behind so he didn't catch me until I hit 99 (slowing), and 2) didn't catch me earlier when I had the speedometer pegged in the Dodge Daytona. I really couldn't afford the $350 ticket, but at least the judge let me call in and plead, instead of demanding I show in court, then tossing me in the klink. (That was what he claimed he always did with "young hotheads". Ahem.)

BTW, the 1987 Dodge Daytona (without any of the fancy stuff) will go faster than 125. Because that's how high the speedometer went before running out of dial.

237 I ran across the dumbest leftwing controversy just now.

Some artists drew a female version of Draco Malfoy which is a rival of Harry Potter in the Harry Potter books. I didn't read them either...but Duck AI tells me they hate each other.

This character named "Malfoid" is drawn in a love/hate relationship with Harry as opposed to the just...hate relationship they had in the books I guess.

Besides being NERDS^2 what is the issue with this character? Well apparently on reddit and other places they've been pairing up Harry and Draco for years because redditors are lame and gay (but not female).

So now other nerds un-gaying their weird cartoon fantasy is hate speech? White supremacy? No...its literally Hitler.

I watched some real-ish AI sketches of this. It was pretty well done. It was a little disturbing to have Malfoy gender-swapped, but at least it wasn't ghey. Mostly, I was just impressed by how well done the AI animation was.

Of course, now my YooToob suggestions are filled with not only other episodes of that, but cartoonish-animation versions and similar gunk.
