My FWP:
I have a US online financial account. Until recently, the old fashioned MFA method of choice was that the company sent you a physical security ID key/token, which generated a unique 6 digit time-limited number to append to your login password. It seems that they stopped providing these. Now you need to download an app to your phone or PC to replace the physical key/token. I don't want an app. I don't want my security dependent on a phone which I carry around with me most everywhere and all the time. I also don't want the app installed on my PC, when I might have to login from another machine altogether. I want to secure my logins only when I am in possession of the physical key/token, which I have locked in a safe 99.9% of the time. It seems it's now no-can-do. I usually read this site on my iPhone. When it loads, it jumps around like a spastic kid on a sugar high. It doesn't want to load the comments at all, and half the time the page crashes instead of doing so. Today my first world problem is my brother's flaky wife.
She sends me wacky emails about my brother, whom I'm very close to. Making suggestions like he's a delicate flower. I should forward the emails to him & wait to see if he divorces her they are so bad. Today she sent an email directive basically putting me on the level with neighbors and distant kin inquiring about my mother who's in the hospital after an emergent procedure at 96yrs old. She claims he's getting "too many calls and texts." I've spoken to him once on Friday. The rest texts and emails. I've translated the medical record. Like she's now in acute renal failure from labs, which I hope is fairly normal as her renal function was normal on admission. Discussed the procedure and L2 fracture. Mother also, per ED MD and hospitalist was a "full code" when I was fairly sure she's a DNR. Helpful, eh? He was glad for that reading. I ignore her emails with her cute heart emogies & crap. For starters she's afraid of me & I don't bite or respond out of respect for my brother and mother. He's years younger than me & we've never had a cross word in his life. I ignore her completely vs telling her to bite me. Soon. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at October 18, 2026 02:31 PM (hzuYO) 52

First World Problems:
You used to be able to tell some stranger's kid at the grocery store to shut up and behave themselves. Anything short of physical contact or punting them down the aisle was a perfectly acceptable response to spoiled little brats. Recent first world problem?
Finding a deserted place to practice driving with the kid. Generally? Annoying people at the park where I walk (for exercise) and walk the dog. There's a paved ring within the park w/outside lane for bikes/scooters/skateboards and the inside ring for pedestrians. I HATE early morning walks when there are groups of runners (4-12, 15 or more) where they fan out and take up the entire lane or both lanes and come crashing down the lane. They know there are walkers, yet I think they expect you to jump onto the grass to let them pass? It's rude. Ah!! I know, first world problem. It's about respecting each other's space, and how that has been eroding for years so that the most basic thing becomes a war of wills (I just stay my course and dare them to run me over). Excellent designs that appeared say, 15 years ago or so. Cheese, deli meats, that sort of thing. Many (not all) these days - you can't really open them properly without a scissors (they don't tear as designed), and you can't reseal them (interlocking thinggy simply doesn't work). Weird. Same design. Possibly quality/gage of materials used? Doesn't apply to all brands, but widespread enough that when I come across one that opens/reseals easily, as designed and as used to be always the case, I notice it and think "well, THIS one works". A lot of airports dont keep their free wi-fi hardware working, or their secure keys working. A security-conscious browser like Brave will then not show it, not knowing that you need to see it. (The wifi login page isnt any different from any other page, to the browser.) Ive taken to just using cell service and tethering as often as not at airports, just to avoid having to decide which insecure free wifi is the real free wifi rather than a scammer free wifi. Brodard is definitely Vietnamese, and food is excellent. More range than a typical V'mese place. Prices? Same as almost all restaurants, going back to before The Great Idiocy. Too high. But Brodard is in that category where I'll shell out the excessive $ because the food is so good and obviously far beyond my ability to make myself.

When in front of said clerk, I'm informed that I'll get a courtesy notice in the mail in a month and THEN I can pay. I tell her that the ticket states that if I don't pay, then I have to go to court or be in contempt, and that date is sooner than 30 days from now. Oh, it's fine, once you get the notice you'll have 60 days to pay, she says breezily. I wanted to tell her that this is not what the ticket says, but shut my trap and skedaddled. Hopefully I will not be arrested in 30 days for not ante'ing up. This is beyond stupid...

Was he preaching heresy? Posted by: RandomDave at October 18, 2026 03:50 PM (aJQbY) Many commies in Central and South America are fond of preaching "liberation" theology. iirc former fakepope frankie was one example. Posted by: Helena Handbasket at October 18, 2026 03:53 PM (jb8Ss) 186
And don't get me started on the FWP adventure of getting a new printer and subsequent tale of woe in trying to get it connected to the wi-fi and cough up a color photograph...
Posted by: tankascribe I bought a new printer two years ago, following the instructions repeatedly, wasted a couple hours, it never worked, and there it sits ever since. Went to the library to print something important once about a year ago. It looks pretty over there. I dust it now and again. Posted by: Cranky Old Yank at October 18, 2026 03:53 PM (EdP2u) 187
174 Looks like they are continuing to fly burn victims from Wainwright to hospitals around Alberta. Now flying them to Calgary, as Edmonton is full up. Must be a giant clusterfuck.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon Prayers for those poor people! Do you think we'll ever know what actually happened? FYI, last week the fiduciary balancing our portfolio wanted us to do 20% in International stocks. Informed him in no uncertain terms that we want to keep our $$ domestic as the European economies are pretty much circling the drain. If he'd proposed that pre-2015 we would have endorsed it, but not since the Islamic invasion, nuh-uh. I think he's a closet conservative as he didn't push hard on that one and not a day later, half of France has been going up in flames. Yeah, that's a hedge we don't need. Told'ja! First World Problem from 1967, courtesy the Lake Mills (Iowa) Graphic column Around the House:
The advent of the electric light changed the habits of the world. If you find yourself scolding the children for forgetting to turn out the lights, perhaps youll feel better by noting the words of experts: It is said that electricity is so cheap now that the constant wear and tear on switches costs more than the electric current. Im pretty sure Ive paid more money on pull-switch fixtures for the closet storage upstairs than Ive paid on electricity for the light it controls. I should just leave it on. Burns are awful. Horribly painful, stinky and a bitch to heal.
They can use a 3-D printer to produce human skin now that can be grafted onto burns. It’s pretty amazing. Posted by: nurse ratched at October 18, 2026 03:57 PM (yEz+x) 192

Posted by: Cranky Old Yank Yeah, we eventually had to return the new printer, got a refund and purchased a different brand. Then couldn't get the software for it because the company's web site was down. Eventually got on, got the stupid software/firmware installed, and finally got a handshake between the printer and the computer. Thank G-d we have no desire to try to print something from our phones, I'd probably commit seppuku before jumping through those hoops. We have no kids nor grandkids to come over and set it up for us. Every time we have to replace something electronic, it makes me want to break out in hives. Or murder somebody. (Yup, I'm old!) Posted by: tankascribe at October 18, 2026 03:58 PM (NtoJk) 193
My best guess for Wainwright? Artillery fire on the range sparked a grass fire, and 60 mph winds whipped it up into a firestorm. And maybe fire jumped roads, and got going behind people trying to fight it.

I looked up what a Jeff cap is: it’s a neologism for a newsboy cap, what some call a flat cap. Not the right thing for an organ grinder’s monkey. A diminutive fez is the traditional cap for such a monkey. And tradition is right!

AOP, she's still hanging on. Kind of amazing. She hasn't been able to eat anything since Oct 6 (the days before that, we're talking maybe half a cup of food at best. We give her water with a syringe, maybe half a ml at a time. I'm not sure if she's actually tuned in at all in the past few days.
I played her favorite song (which was actually her mother's favorite song), version 2 of "Crossing the Bar" by the Spooky Men's Chorale. Inspired by the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Maybe it was my imagination, but I thought I saw her face relax with a ghost of a smile. I know music has a way of breaking through, that words cannot. It will be played at her funeral. Weird. Daily Mail has the story. Posted by: four seasons at October 18, 2026 03:49 PM (/QHx4) ___________________________ Something is weird about this. If you search the local stories on the occurrence, it brings up a 2024 incident where a Priest of the same name and age was kidnapped and left dead in a local trash landfill by a "foreigner." "Foreigner" in Ecuador refers specifically to Venezuelans. It's an odd quirk of the language. Almost all the stories available reference that occurrence, and say little to nothing about a crucifix killing a priest. Posted by: Orson at October 18, 2026 04:00 PM (dIske) 197
