Need some help staying regular? The ONT is here to help! Oatmeal vs. Greek Yogurt: Which Breakfast Is Better to Help You Poop? What you eat has a direct impact on how well your digestive system functions, including how often, and how comfortably, you poop. If you’re not going as regularly as you’d like, what you eat for breakfast may make a difference. Oatmeal and strained (Greek-style) yogurt are two of the most popular breakfast foods around, and both have earned a reputation for supporting gut health, but they work in different ways. So when it comes to helping you poop, is one better than the other? Here’s what dietitians say.Check out the link for more if you need to. ----- That's a big-ass veggie! Maine woman grows 170-pound zucchini, breaks North American record ![]() A woman from Maine has broken the North American and U.S. record for growing a zucchini. The Maine Pumpkin Growers Association shared a post to social media saying that Sarah Whitty of Damariscotta grew the 170-pound "giant marrow" zucchini she named Secretariat. Last year, Whitty grew a 162-pounder, but a small split disqualified it, something the Pumpkin Growers Association said is common with this type of crop. But this year, Secretariat prevailed, coming in seven pounds heavier than the last North American record, and smashing the U.S. record of 152 pounds.----- Speaking of Maine - seems like there's a feud with Connecticut over lobster rolls. Lobster roll debate over controversial ingredient divides New England Ordering a lobster roll “Connecticut-style” in Maine might garner a dirty look — or worse, a side of mayonnaise instead of butter. A recent debate has heated up in Maine over how a proper lobster roll should be served: warm, with butter, or cold, with mayo. Maine-style lobster rolls traditionally consist of cold lobster meat, either tossed in mayo or served with mayo on the side. A Connecticut-style roll typically includes warm lobster meat, poached in butter or served with warm butter on the side. In both variations, the lobster is piled onto a warm, toasted split-top bun, usually brioche. Despite the discourse over which style of lobster roll reigns supreme, Peter Bissell, co-owner of Highroller Lobster Co. in Portland, Maine, believes there’s room for both. Both styles are available up near the Doof Enterprises northern command in Cape Cod. They're pricey but good. I prefer the cold / mayo version. Especially with a dusting of Old Bay (yes - I bring my own!) ![]() The Mummy (Another Oldie but Goody) Forget toilet paper—that stuff unravels faster than a family reunion argument. Tear old white T-shirts, sheets, or pillowcases into strips and wrap yourself like you’re about to be stored in the attic for the winter. Leave your face half-free so you can still drink. Add dark circles under your eyes, a little pale or white makeup, and black boots or shoes to finish it. ![]() The Pirate With a Twist Tie a bandana or dish towel on your head and fashion an eye patch from cardboard secured with kitchen twine, maybe we need a rubber band or two. We should ask AOP for advice. Make a hook from foil molded over a paper towel tube. Wear all black, then tape up an empty Amazon box and carry it with you. Congratulations, you’re no longer just any pirate. You’re a Porch Pirate who just lifted a package from an unsuspecting neighbor. Bonus points if you act suspicious every time someone looks at the box. ![]() The Scarecrow Start with a plaid shirt, jeans or overalls, and boots. Stuff straw, raffia, or thin strips cut from tan plastic or paper bags into the sleeves, boot tops, and pockets (yellow or tan yarn works too). Add a floppy hat with more stuffing poking out, and use makeup or face paint for a triangle nose, or just some freckles if you’re keeping it low-key. If you have any crow decorations lying around, zip-tie or twist-tie a few to your outfit. ![]() The Lamp Pop a decorative lampshade on your head, the kind with fringe is ideal, just make sure you can still see. Dress in all black or brown underneath for your lamp stem and tape or clip a small flashlight inside the shade so you actually light up. When people stare, just tilt the shade and say, “Y’all are looking a little dim tonight.” ![]() The Mom (or Dad) Who’s Had Enough Throw an apron over any casual outfit, hang oven mitts from the ties, and wear a colander as a helmet. Carry a sponge in one hand and a stack of paper plates in the other. Mess up your hair and smudge your lipstick and mascara if you are the mom type. Walk around the party aggressively “cleaning” surfaces while announcing that you’re the only one around here who loads the dishwasher correctly. ![]() The Package That Got Lost Wear a big cardboard box (or several smaller ones taped together) with a shipping label drawn on the front. Shuffle around looking confused and ask people if they’ve seen your tracking number. Seek out the Porch Pirate if they’re at the same party, the two of you can have a whole subplot. ![]() The Socks the Dryer Ate Gather every single sock in the house that’s lost its mate and glue them all over an old solid-color shirt (or better yet, an old black shirt and pair of sweatpants you’re willing to sacrifice). Add random bits of dryer lint for texture. You are now the official representative of every sock that has ever disappeared into the laundry abyss. ![]() These costumes prove you don’t need much more than a little imagination and whatever’s already lying around the house. They’re easy to throw together and they give you something to talk about when someone asks what in the world you’re supposed to be. Did this spark any ideas you can share with us? ----- Thanks, Piper! Bonus fashion content! Here are some photos sent in by our friend lin-duh. His largest fish was a 130 lb. sturgeon.

She died on Sept 30, at age 90. She shared a birthday of Aug. 17 with Gene Kranz, who just turned 93. Here are two of her iconic photos: https://t.ly/oq2l- https://t.ly/sXxIm The first is her standing next to a listing of the source code for the Apollo guidance computer. You want to know how the left wins? They are always on offense. The don't care about the non-stop lies the tell, they want us to chase them rather than making our positive case. That remote construction toys lunch counter... I'm curious about the song playing in the background. Shazam can't ID it. Neilia came from some money and was a very supportive wife, helping Joe all along the way in his political career and having and raising his three kids. I guess she snapped when Joe started banging the fishnet wearing babysitter slut Jill, who was herself married. Journalist AJ Weberman did excellent work researching Joe and his work can be found online. His first foray into Journalism was being the leading "Dylanologist" in the late 60s, including going through Bob's trash cans when he lived in the village. Forgot...was a pregnant nun with boy #1 for that Halloween. He was due in 10 days, and of course went 10 more days past his due date to make me weep every morning.
I was not one of those girls who could have faked it without anyone knowing I read about. Or, wow, not knowing and whee here he is! No. I scared people in line at grocery stores who let me go ahead in line. Got stuck in turnstiles. Could barely fit behind a table at a burger place. It was not cool being all baby and looking normal from behind. Surprise! His final shock for us was to stop moving past his due date, and send me to OB to hook me up and poke him to move. Nurses said, "Oh, twins?" We said no and they picked up 2 heartbeats (long before ultrasounds unless medically needed). We both quietly freaked. My comment was that we only had one crib. The charge nurse came in and looked at me (I felt like a cow at the auction) and said, "She's big but not twins big." He weighed 10lbs so I think twins big as I was the one dealing with it. That V - E + F = 2 is very fundamental topological relation. That is called, you guessed it, the Euler characteristic. Any solid that forms a closed surface with no "holes" is topologically a sphere. The Euler characteristic demands that any such sphere must have curvature. Also, that number is the reason why there are only 5 regular polyhedra, or Platonic solids as they're called due to the Ancient Greek Homos being so enamored with them. Now, with polyhedra, the faces or mostly flat. The curvature is concentrated in singularities at the vertices, or corners (believe it or not, the edges, while they look singular extrinsically, they are not intrinsically, but are in fact the zero curvature -- a flat lander wouldn't even feel them). Now, for a smooth surface, such as the perfect sphere, or oblate spheroids, ellipsoids, etc, etc. That curvature gets spread out all over the surface. But the Euler characteristic demands that curvature integrate to 2*2pi, or 720 degrees. That 720 degrees is the sum of the "angle deficit" of all the vertices. Only triangle, squares, and pentagons can put together to make a solid surface where the angle sum is less than 360 degrees. Now, take a torus. That is closed, but topologically is a very different animal than a sphere. The Euler characteristic of that is 0. So, that says a torus can be flat. And it can, only problem is, you can't embed it in just 3D smoothly. The classic symmetric donut shape is a 2-torus that can be embedding in 3D (of course it can, cause it exists and we can visualize it, duh). But its curvature integrates to zero (it's positive on the outside, and negative on the inside, zero on the exact top and bottom), just like the Euler characteristic demands. And there are polyhedral toruses, but the rules there for what is "regular" is different. The sum there is always zero. A two-hole torus Euler number is -2. And so it must have negative curvature, the negative of a sphere's curvature. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 11, 2026 11:58 PM (w6EFb) 211

I knew that about the building of the arch, the fire hoses part to control the movement. I was in engineering school in '65, and had worked a summer in '64 in a Bethlehem Steel fab shop in Leetsdale, PA. We were making the I-70 Poplar Street bridge box beam sections and barging them to St Louis at the same time PDM just upriver was barging arch segments to the same location. I was deer hunting up in the Allegheny Nat'l Forest on opening day buck hunting in '66 and met a structural engineer like me who told me about working for PDM building the arch, him on one of the survey crews that worked nights with pinpoint lights with far-out stations to gage adjustments by shim to get the arch segments in the right 3d places. Years later I spent 3 years working in St Louis and Ms G and the babies and I never tired of visiting the arch. During our time there, a parachutist made an illegal jump one sunny day and landed on top of the arch, carrying a smaller shute he'd use to jump off from there to get to ground. He was furling in the big chute when he lost balance and fell, not straight off, but to slide down one side. SPLAT. DOA. He had an accomplice, or girlfriend or wife, film it.

Brewer ball is small ball, supported by deadly defense, and the occasional smackarooni. Plus, Brewers fans know how to tailgate. I suspect there are still folks outside Miller Park heating up some brats as we post. Posted by: tcn in AK at October 12, 2026 12:31 AM (BYJyI) 249
And g’night, All.

Now for a mind bender. There is a 2D topological structure dubbed the Real Projective plane. Think of it as Klein bottle with an extra flipping. It is non-orientable, and it's Euler number is 1. It has half a sphere worth of positive curvature. The simplest geometric object that can do this is a hemisphere, but with an antipodal flip. You walk across the equator and appear on the opposite side. If you think about it how that would work, you'll see that it requires a handedness flip. If you walk across the equator your mirror image pops out on the other side. There've been some scifi stories based on this, I think. That boundary is imagined as like walking into a mirror. From your perspective, when you cross the mirror, you pop back out in a mirror image of the world you just left. From an external observer's point of view, you walk into the mirror and your reflection comes back out. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 12, 2026 12:33 AM (w6EFb) 251
While she was in hard labor, a woman across the hall was screaming her head off. My sister sat up and told her to shut the hell up.
Some people are just made to make babies. Posted by: tcn in AK at October 12, 2026 12:22 AM (BYJyI) ******** Son's head never made it past anything. He was still floating around and tying his umbilical cord around his neck (twice) when I hit 8cm. My OB said wearily that I needed to think c-section and I practically said hallelujah. It wasn't emergent so I labored on for 4 more hours and had an epidural when the anesthesiologist arrived. 100 years prior we both would have died. Yeah, some women are just built to do this more easily. I didn't yell and sent my dude to the waiting room at one point to tell my mother I was not the one screaming. I honestly was looking forward to transition to say weird stuff to my husband and get away with it. Bummer. Second boy was a section as well as the Polish have big heads apparently. No labor with him. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at October 12, 2026 12:35 AM (hzuYO) 252
Dagnabbit, I just realized that I could -- and should -- have taken two days off for the MoMe. As it is, I'll be on the road Friday morning (how come vacations always require you to get up early?) and won't get there until late Friday afternoon. At least I'll be there for dinner.
Four days to go. Posted by: Weak Geek at October 12, 2026 12:35 AM (p/isN) 253
Unfortunately for the sci-fi picture, that handedness flip doesn't really work that way. It's smooth and continuous as you move along the surface. There would be no boundary where it instantly happened. That's sort of hard to imagine, but locally there is never anything strange looking. It's only when you completed a circuit and came back to where you started that the flip would occur. And that's because we spread the curvature out. If you did with a flat disc, and put all the curvature at the rim in a singularity, it would happen instantly, but that would bad for flatlanders. Yu don't want to cross a curvature singularity. Happy Sunday Horde.
Top pic, I have many happy memories of camping along the Kancamagus Highway when I was just out of high school, it was and is a beautiful place. Can't wait for the MoMe. Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at October 12, 2026 12:41 AM (ibDUx) 255

Posted by: publius I wouldn't think either one would work out well for flatlanders. Instantly becoming your own mirror image as you cross the prime meridian can't be much less damaging than slowly doing so as you circumnavigate the globe. I remember seeing an educational film in grade school on the construction of the Gateway Arch. All I remember is the placement of the final piece.
Now I realize that the film wasn't that old, because I was born just a few years before the Arch went up. I can't imagine what St. Louis was like before then. Posted by: Weak Geek at October 12, 2026 12:46 AM (p/isN) 257
Massive early vote shift to Dems in Ohio vs 2024.
TJM hardest hit. Can’t wait for spin how this is actually a good thing. Sad!! 54 D seats in play. Posted by: A0S C0pe at October 12, 2026 12:51 AM (wUgn4) 258

Gateway Park is certainly an improvement, but there are plenty of homeless down there and some evenings bring out the yutes.
