Music Thread: Shut Up And Sing!

crocfail26.jpg

Click on Garrett's newest formal shoes, and you will get an original composition by The Goo Goo Dolls. It's one of their more famous songs, and a solid one at that. I have always liked their sound, but now I am enjoying them for an additional reason.

Here is a quotation from The Goo Goo Dolls' frontman:

I got people, fans, friends from every walk of life, every political stripe, everything. And I always stress, we got one thing in common because we're living in weird times. We got one thing in common, and that's we’re all here to see a show, and I'm not going to lecture people about anything.
-- John Rzeznik

Why is this a difficult concept?

I was a Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band fan in my youth. Their first four albums were excellent, and their live performances were absolutely incredible.

But the combination of an increasingly anti-American tone in his music, a shockingly hypocritical public vs. private life, and the incessant pomposity of his political haranguing seemingly at every public appearance has made me despise him.

***

John Prine!

This is new to me, and it is fun!

***

Caamp doing Vagabond is the sort of stripped down music that I like.

***

The Deraillers Pure Fool Is twangy, simple, and fun to listen to! It doesn't take itself very seriously, which in this day and age of pompous asshole entertainers, is a very good thing

***

I used to listen to Lyle Lovett a lot, but for some stupid, unfathomable reason he dropped off my play lists. That was a mistake, because he is a fine talent, and one of the few original artists around.

***

And now for something a little different!

Most people think of Mozart as a symphonic composer, but the dude could write opera. And for sheer toe-tapping, sing-along tunes, it's tough to beat him.

This is one of his greatest arias from The Magic Flute, called "The Queen Of The Night." If you know any budding sopranos, ask them to sing this for you. It is a great tune, and extremely technically difficult.

Next time I will introduce you to a good drinking song...

18 I absolutely love that piece from the Magic Flute. I've seen a soprano of opera quality perform it personally, and it's an incredible accomplishment. It showcases Mozart's love of using the Human Voice as a pure musical instrument, far beyond song. Something very few composers have ever dared to try.

26 For a while Rob Dukes was the frontman for Exodus. He would get sort of political, but from the right. The rest of the band told him to tone it down - not so much because they disagreed, but because they were there to entertain, not pontificate. Do not piss on half of your fan-base.

It's the ones who can't shut up about politics (are you listening Barbara Streisand, Bruce Springsteen, and about 90 percent of Hollywood?) that I turn them off, literally. Why people with one talent, even an exceptional one, think that translate into universal genius remains a mystery. Perhaps I lack the super-inflated ego needed for that level of delusion.

I don't have a favorite music, but for a while I was bopping between Tom Waites and Blondie.
Then I found out about Bachatas, and was entranced for a while.

95 When did they start putting chopped walnuts in Port, nice or otherwise? Does it give it a walnutty flavor infusion?
Posted by: Duncanthrax at October 10, 2026 08:51 PM (0sNs1)

I would be pissed if I bought a bottle of wine, and it had chopped nuts in it.

100 I am unashamedly, a huge fan of 80s rock, although with acceptance of all genres of music.
Nowhere near anyone or band with “hair”, I find this one to be a regular indulgence.

You need to reduce one of those, and bring in some in some Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi.

In other words, Roll Over Beethoven.

Decades ago, aspirationally, I subscribed to a BBC classical music club and there was some other one also with beautifully packaged classical music CDs and notes.

There's about 75 to 100. But since I've been doing my projects and been by the computer all the time, I've been finally playing them in the background. Soothing.

I hope I develop an ear for classical music more.

Apparently for the opera CDs, I require animated rabbits to make it tolerable but maybe that will grow on me also.

102 80 ... "I don’t like opera. It gives me a headache."

Nurse,
I enjoyed performing in operas. Except for a few arias, I don't usually care to listen to them. Too many 'operatic' voices are all technique, which often sounds harsh and artificial, and too little effective emotion. One exception is Jesus Christ Superstar, which is an opera even if the Met faints at the notion.

A couple years older.

The man wrote more songs that have been covered by more artists of every genre than anyone in modern history. Some beautiful lyrics. He won a Nobel Prize for his work.

And he mostly keeps to himself about politics. Might be his best feature.

122 “I was a Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band fan in my youth. Their first four albums were excellent, and their live performances were absolutely incredible.”

I was telling the 26 yo nephew one of those “when I was your age stories” the other day. It was during Springsteen’s 1984 Born in the USA heyday and he wasn’t coming to Houston. So I and the rest of the posse camped out on the side walk of whatever store sold tickets back then for his Cotton Bowl appearance in Dallas. Drove up there for the marathon 3 hour concert. He never mentioned politics. You couldn’t pay me to spit on that vile piece of excrement now.
