As a scout leader, it is great fun to watch young people when they first learn to light matches to make a fire.

They strike the match and, if it catches, they hurriedly flick it into the fire pit as though it was radioactive. There is no thought given whatsoever as to placing it somewhere in there to actually set something afire.

I larf.

The painting The Trojan Women Setting Fire to Their Fleet by Claude Lorrain depicts an event from Virgil's Aeneid, where the women of Troy, tired of wandering after the fall of their city, attempt to burn their ships to force their men to settle in Sicily. This act is spurred on by the goddess Juno, but is ultimately thwarted by divine intervention when Aeneas prays for rain to extinguish the flames.

This is probably based on the story in the Aenead that takes place well after the war. Aeneas (a Trojan) is basically sailing around endlessly, and the women try to end that by burning the ships.

They certainly had the sail, but I don't know about multiple masts and the like. Lorrain flourished in the 17th Century. So this is probably another example of "dressing the past in the fashions of the present": He painted 1600s ships because that was what he knew.

Maybe the women set fire to their ships so that the Greeks wouldn't get ahold of their superior naval technology.

53 I read part of the Aeneid in college when I was reading aloud to blind students.

IIRC, Aeneas was kind of a dullard. He's always asking folks -- gods, humans, Achilles in the underworld -- what he should do, and they all tell him "go to Italy." And then he merrily goes about the business of going somewhere else besides Italy. Finally, it dawns on him, "Hey, maybe I should go to Italy," and he does.

Maybe there was something I missed at the time, since I didn't read the whole thing. But that's the way I remember it.

There is a luminous quality to the sky and the surrounding land. It is one of the qualities that make the Dutch Masters of that period so effective. I wonder if he had any influence on Maxfield Parrish.

Nope. That wasn’t something developed until at least a thousands years later. Trojan-era ships were basically flat barges powered by oars. They had maybe one simple square sail.

I don’t think even Columbus’ ships had rigging as advanced in this painting.

147 Madame Mayhem, both are amazing! Hope you have the best visit to both.

Washington specifically designed the long walking path towards the house, with its wooded areas to be curvy, and wind in such a way to hint at coming attractions. I did not learn about the coolness of the landscaping until after I'd visited.want to go back and experience it with that in mind. Hope you enjoy it, it's just the best. You can buy cool gardening stuff or things like lavender come mix using their own lavender in the gift shop.

Arlington is a sacred place. I get chills during the changing of the guard. If you have any relatives, it's cool to track down their graves and find them. If you have time, seeing the Lee home on the property is also cool, but not essential if you have to save time.

I had a series of interviews for this job I was recruited for. Very first call with recruiter I said I want $X TC and anything less doesn’t interest me. So if that’s not doable let’s not bother. She’s like ok that’s a bit higher than we anticipated paying but we could make it work.

Great.

4 rounds of interviews later I get an offer. It’s 15%less than $X. Turns out they could not “make it work”. So all of us wasted all this time and effort for nothing.

The Capitol is a far better experience than a White House tour. WH tour was just the East Wing to begin with, and that doesn't exactly exist right now. General public doesn't get to see the Residence (Obviously) or the West Wing.

Waste of time.

209 197 One of my best friends growing up was Indian, her parents came over from New Delhi with nothing and built a good life. But they also wove themselves into the fabric of America while also honoring their homeland.

I don't understand how the immigrant ethos is now "yeah I'm here for a better life, now let's change everything about America and make it like the place I fled from!" That was not the way. Now it is.

—

It’s a numbers thing. When you’re the only Indian family in town, you adapt and become American. When there are 100 families you form a pack that advances your group interests and you stay Indian.

That’s why early immigrants from Asia assimilated. But as they grew in numbers they stopped having to assimilate. It was easy to just be Indian in the US instead of be Americans from India.

Throw in the woke bullshit of every culture is superior to American culture indoctrination in schools and 2nd generation immigrants stop assimilating as well.

Trump is going to Montana and Kansas more to seal the deal than because of worry. Some states, Trump might create issues like for Steve Hilton or Bruce Blakeman.

It is all about turnout now and I think Trump wants a smashing red wave type midterm. EV and mail in ballots so far show no sign of a blue wave and those are hard data points and this is apparent now in multiple states. Trump's rallies seem to be unique in that they actually drive turnout while most pols just have boring photo op types designed more with the audience as a backdrop.

So far, VA is one of the exceptions showing engaged Democrats but Trump might be a hindrance there because of all the laid off govt workers and contractors. Two important swing House races there. New York is another one but Blakeman in the governor's office and the awful performances of Holchul and Leticia in debates is affecting US House races there. Lawler and there are two Dems suddenly appearing in trouble there.

That is the problem with Dems, they gerrymandered for a blue wave for the midterms.

He went along with the Cloud wave like his competitors and has made money there, but the hardware division, 'Surface', division is just coasting along after many years, Xbox is so screwed up nobody is sure if it'll survive for many more years, Bing is still an afterthought for most people, and they have turned Windows (their biggest product and brand) into the most hated operating system of all time, with very good reasons for that since they've turned it into an annoying spyware that runs on hundreds of millions of computers across the world.

266 This is why he's in Montana:

Montana’s 1st Congressional District is a tight race between Republican Aaron Flint and Democrat Sam Forstag, with recent polls showing a statistical tie. The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball have downgraded the race from "Likely Republican" to "Lean Republican," while Silver Bulletin gives Forstag a 38.8% chance of winning.

The 2nd District is safe R.

I don't know enough about Montana politics to talk about the reasons the race is close there, but Trump having to campaign there isn't a big warning flare. He's just trying to get Republicans to actually go to the polls in a mid-term for a 2nd term president.

That's a notoriously bad time for any incumbent in the same party as the president in Congress.

Most presidents have never campaigned like Trump is right now for a mid-term.

267 Fun history fact of Trump and Alaska

President Trump said Alaska is very special to him because his grandfather was there a long time ago, left his mark, and the area has always been important to him.

His grandfather, Friedrich Trump, left Germany at 16, went to the Klondike Gold Rush via Alaska, and made his money running restaurants and hotels for the miners in the Yukon (not by digging for gold).

He was a rough and tumble frontier businessman, left with a fortune, and eventually settled in New York - where his son later built the family’s real-estate empire.

"They were thinking about canceling. They said, sir, you’re very busy. This is very tough. I said, where am I going? Alaska. Eight hours. You think I’d ever cancel? I don’t cancel for Alaska. I don’t cancel!" 😂

"My grandfather was up here a long time ago. I don’t know. He was great, but he had a little bit of a reputation, I will be honest, as did most of the people that came up here. 😅 He was a little rough, but he was great. They remember. He left his trail. But he was here a long time ago. A special place to me. Very important place to me."

I have never seen this in modern political history. And I saw a reason why, Trump has been extremely effective in mobilizing his voters over time since 2016-18. Probably the closest comparison would be FDR but FDR never had the kind of flak that Trump gets from teh press nor did FDR have the stamina to do what Trump has done with rallies around the US now for a decade!
