18 The Met-

These panels once formed the inner and outer faces of polyptych wings, with the Annunciation serving as the exterior and Christ Carrying of the Cross, with the Crucifixion and The Resurrection, with the Pilgrims of Emmaus (1975.1.119A-B) the interior. Painted by Gerard David in the early years of the sixteenth century, the pictures reveal the influence of the artist’s fifteenth-century predecessors on his compositional style and palette. Although it is possible that the wings once flanked a single painted panel component, thus forming a triptych, it is also conceivable that they could have been elements of a more complex multimedia altarpiece with carved sections surrounded by two-dimensional painted panels. The Lehman wings were, possibly very early in their existence, linked to a painting of the Lamentation that was also created in the David workshop and which is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Two days ago, the lovely and art-loving Mrs naturalfake and I went to the Meadows Museum of Art on the SMU Campus.

It's dedicated to Spanish and South American art from the 10th century through the 20th.

Mostly, religious art and portraits. Folks like Picasso as well.

The religious art had some Annunciation paintings, but more paintings depicting the Immaculate Conception, Madonna and Child.

And since in Ye Olde Days the paintings were hung in Church to represent difficult Christian concepts since most folk didn't read.

The oddest one was a painting that tried to depicted the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost),
which depicted the Trinity as a 3-headed Jesus merged together and sharing four eyes.

Which apparently disturbed most people, and was condemned by the Church and ordered destroyed, and that interpretation banned as well.

54 Archangel Gabriel; The Virgin Annunciate
Gerard David

Gerald David was renowned as a master colorist, his religious scenes are characterized by serene, calm atmospheres, luminous tones, and quiet spirituality. (Wikipedia)

Gabriel was another Archangel with roles in major religions:

• Christianity: Known for the Annunciation, where he appeared to the Virgin Mary to announce that she would conceive and bear Jesus. He also foretold the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and is traditionally associated with the trumpet of Judgment Day.
• Islam: Revered as Jibrīl (or Jibrail), the chief angel who acted as the divine medium who revealed and transmitted the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.
• Judaism: Appears in the Book of Daniel to interpret the prophet's visions and is viewed alongside Michael as a guardian of the Jewish people.

Celebrated on September 29 (Feast of the Archangels) in Western Christianity, and March 26 and July 13 in Eastern Orthodoxy.

62 "26Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee, called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28And coming in, he said to her, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29But she was greatly troubled at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this might be. 30And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31“And behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32“He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; 33and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end.” 34And Mary said to the angel, 'How can this be, since I am a virgin?' 68 Henna has been used for over 5,000 years, originating in ancient Egypt and the Near East before spreading to North Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and eventually Europe and the rest of the world.

One of the earliest recorded uses of henna for hair is found on Egyptian mummies, such as Ahmose-Henuttamehu (circa 1574 BCE) and mummies from Thebes around 1000 BCE, whose hair was stained red using henna.

In the 1950s, Lucille Ball popularized the "henna rinse" through her character Lucy Ricardo on I Love Lucy.

83 diptych
noun
1 a painting, especially an altarpiece, on two hinged wooden panels which may be closed like a book.
2 an ancient writing tablet consisting of two hinged leaves with waxed inner sides.

origin
early 17th century: via late Latin from late Greek diptukha ‘pair of writing tablets’, neuter plural of Greek diptukhos ‘folded in two’, from di- ‘twice’ + ptukhē ‘a fold’.

89 It is David's use of color that catches my eye. The facial expressions in that period often look wooden, the eyes look bored or sleepy. (I gripe about it in many comments.) But his use of color makes me think of illuminated manuscripts and that is high praise. What surprises me is how vibrant the paint remains after five or more centuries.

49“For the Mighty One has done great things for me;

113 Math... Sorry, not sorry

Another argument over night, so here is the math.

Ohio to date is 245,000 IPEV and 74,500 AB. Total of 320,000 EV.

In 2022 there were 1,392,767 EVs.

To match 2022 1,072,767 additional EVs need to be returned.

In 2022 92% of ballot requests were returned. Since there are 657,054 current requests, and 74,500 AB returned, there could be 520,789 (595,289 - 74,500) additional AB come in, to match the 2022 return rate.

If this happens then IPEV needs to make up 551,997 votes to close the gap. This is 35,935 votes per day over the remaining 15 IPEV days.

Current IPEV is 35,071 per day, so IPEV is lagging 2.5%. This is assuming that IPEV does not need to compensate for AB at all.

AB return is averaging 10,642 per day. To make up for unreturned ballots that needs to increase to a 26,039 per day average. AB is lagging 59%

If we roughly assume that mail return stays about the same and that IPEV needs to pick up the slack, then the IPEV rate needs to go up to 61,584 per day, meaning it would currently be lagging 43%.

If you are emotionally invested in Ohio matching the 2022 early vote, you are hoping that there are a lot of ballots in the mail.

Exactly. And for the EU Summit -

EU News, In part, Zelenskyy ‘betrayed’: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who will join the summit tomorrow, said on Wednesday that his country is losing a key ally in the US and admitted feeling “betrayed” by Donald Trump, as relations between Kyiv and Washington hit a new low, my colleague Sasha Vakulina reports.

Asked by British broadcaster Piers Morgan whether Ukraine is losing American support, Zelenskyy replied: “Yeah, but not because of us. We can't be weak.”

“It's painful when President Trump chooses one side, not our side,” he said. Asked whether he felt betrayed, Zelenskyy answered: “Really, yes,” although he stressed that the situation was more complicated than his personal feelings.

US eyes frozen assets: Meanwhile, the FT also reports that US negotiators have proposed that European countries unfreeze some of Russia’s immobilised state assets and transfer them to a financial vehicle controlled by Washington as a means of unblocking stalled peace talks.

No voter registration in OH, so the closest is precinct analysis.

@TonerousHyus is doing that. Follow him. Essentially, Dems seem to be running a couple of points better than 2024 in OH so far. Which means...a deep red state is still a deep red state.

Dems always outvote Republicans in early vote in every state. It's like worrying about Mississippi because Jackson votes Democrat.

What matters is how close the margin gets by the end of early voting, and how much Republicans win the election day vote (which they always do).

But, PA doesn't have any major federal elections, especially statewide like a senate race, so it'll be more susceptible to overall turnout advantages of the out of power party.

Ohio being a swing state is a remnant of 20 years ago, Brown recently losing as an incumbent 2 years ago, and a polling industry that has a proven record of not being able to (or refusing to) accurately reach rural working class voters at such a level that it's been throwing off polling by double digits for years now.

The only way it works is if there will be depressed rural voting and the youth will turnout at higher levels, like the 2025 gubernatorial elections in NJ and VA, but those are effectively special elections that midterm senate elections won't mimic.
