El Greco paintings always mess with my expectations. I look at this work and it could be a portrait by Rembrandt. It is much more natural, lacking the long proportions that make El Greco's figures seem a little off. The dark background isolates and emphasizes St. Jerome and his book, forcing the viewer to focus on the figure with no distractions. Also, I like the pose where Jerome's hands on the book, along with his contemplative expression, center the theme of the work. It's worth enlarging the image to appreciate the details of the painting.
This and some of El Greco's other portraits are, for the period, almost photo-realistic. Then there are the ones that could be by Picasso or other modern abstract artists, like his "View of Toldeo" and "Opening of the Fifth Seal. Posted by: JTB at October 16, 2026 09:51 AM (yTvNw) 43

I've been blessed to have seen an exhibition of many of El Greco's major works in an exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Art several years ago. He's among my favorite artists and I consider him the greatest Christian religious painter--even more so than Rubens, who was vastly more technically adept than El Greco, whose paintings seem rough by comparison. That said, El Greco, when painting Jesus and the Saints, somehow manages to infuse his paintings with a power that other, better painters can't seem to match. El Greco achieved elevation, the highest and greatest challenge in all of art.
Anyway, I was profoundly moved by El Greco's paintings. They made me feel closer to God. Posted by: troyriser at October 16, 2026 09:55 AM (v1M8F) 56

Saint Jerome as Scholar
Domenikos Theotokopoulos Commentary El Greco started his career as a painter of religious icons in Greece and was prolific in the production of sacred works, often making several versions of a single composition. The bearded man in this painting is a representation of St. Jerome, the fourth-century Roman scholar and hermit saint best remembered for his translation of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin, making it more broadly accessible. Wearing an anachronistic crimson cardinal's robe, the saint points to the words of the Bible with the elongated fingers characteristic of El Greco's paintings. El Greco signed his name in Greek on the right side of this canvas, which may be one of two paintings of St. Jerome listed in the 1614 inventory of the artist's studio. Source: The Frick Collection: Essential Guide, 2024 ---- The painting seems off. The bearded man's head and long beard are so narrow, his shoulders under the cloak too broad. And the other parts of the bearded man we see from under the cloak - his arms, hands - also seem too long. (Maybe the cloak threw off proportion.) --- Would pass hanging today's art selection. I have the opposite reaction. The Bible warns against making images of God and Jesus is Eternal God Himself. People venerate these pictures and objects, which is idolatry. Certainly no one knows what Christ looked like on Earth, for that matter.
Posted by: Not Bowin' To No Statue at October 16, 2026 10:03 AM (EdP2u) I disagree, obviously. Christian art, especially when produced by masters such as El Greco and Rubens, is focused on what the painting or sculpture represents, not the media used to convey the feeling the objects evoke. Insofar as what Christ actually looked like, no serious student of the Christian New Testament denies The Lord's Middle Eastern, Semitic heritage. Jesus of Nazareth was/is Jewish so He probably looked like a typical Jewish male of that era. That said, he is represented as a black African on the walls of Ethiopian churches, for example; as Asian in Chinese & other Asian churches; as white in European art. People see Him as one of their own. Nothing wrong with that. The Chinese communists understand the power of religious art. Paintings of Christ in state-approved churches were replaced with pictures of Xi Jinping. Problem solved, I suppose. Posted by: troyriser at October 16, 2026 10:29 AM (v1M8F) 118

I noticed some people were talking about banning Leftism in the last thread.
I talk about this a lot, in terms of panther pits, canals, knouters, rape dogs, and so forth. But those are obviously just jokes. Mostly. Well, partly. Product contains at least 1% joke. But, back in '17, I came up with a serious proposal for a real Constitutional amendment, and I stick by it. 1.) The Democrats, all other left-of-center Parties, and all affiliated NGO/NPOs are dissolved and proscri. 2.) All their living current and former elected officials, appointed officials, Party delegates, and corporate boards are jailed for life. Their assets will be collected by the Treasury, or paid out to the citizen who captured the bandit. 3.) All transfer payments from US or State Treasuries to US citizens are banned permanently. Any American receiving or paying government money must be able to present a clear audit trail demonstrating goods sold or services rendered, at prevailing market prices. 4.) Anyone who ever proposes trying to change paragraph #3 in any way is a traitor, and will be shot. Paragraph #2 was a warning. No more life sentences, we're simply never doing Leftism again; YOU WILL BE SHOT. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at October 16, 2026 10:31 AM (BI5O2) 121

The Christmas carol "Some Children See Him" addresses this very phenomenon. Beautiful little song. Posted by: Bulg at October 16, 2026 10:31 AM (77rzZ) Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at October 16, 2026 10:31 AM (s1VwS) 123
And yet, nowhere in the Bible are we told anything of what Jesus looked like.
Posted by: Bulg at October 16, 2026 10:27 AM (77rzZ) --- Because that was not important. It's an interesting contrast because Greek biographers often dwelt on the appearance of leaders because of course they could be gods, and Romans formalized this. But Jesus' appearance was known by those who saw him, and those traditions were passed down to later generations, so many of the earliest art in the catacombs and elsewhere would reflect this.
