19 I've noticed this a lot in older paintings.
The faces of the people in them look so similar they could be siblings.

This one is a brother and sister, because they look like the same face except the girl's is more feminine.

I wonder if this was because the artists were limited in models and just kept recycling the faces.

90 Thought the instrument was a xylophone with a keyboard, but after embiggening it to see the detail I think it's a pump organ (Rick Beato has a modern version that he's used a few times).

Interesting art in general. In the Middle Ages you couldn't just hold up a boom box, you had to hire someone to play. And apparently your would-be girlfriend had to operate the bellows.

107 A pump organ has reeds. They were very popular American frontier instruments. A portable pipe organ is called a portative, or 'portatif.' Bach had one, and used to play dance tunes at country fairs. For money.

Notation of the time was complex and accurate for melodies and tonality, but there was no way to indicate syncopation. Some music historians have told me he was legendary for his gigues. Could really rock. We'll never know for sure.

I'm also not generally a fan but holy smokes, this lady was fantastic and we had the run of the place. I can't tell you what piece she was playing but Wow!

As I've noted before, I'm a philistine when it comes to fine art. I'm of varying opinion about the PRB; sometimes I enjoy one of their paintings, then at other times I do not.

FWIW, Andrew Lloyd Webber has the world's largest collection of PRB paintings.

So, the lovely and apparently star-struck Mrs naturalfake wanted to see the new Tom Cruise movie, "Digger" and off we went to the Cineplex.

The movie itself is not very good, however it does have the germ of an interesting idea.

The problem really is three fold;
1) Despite gassing on and on about satire, the writer, director and stars(?) have no idea what satire is. At. All.

2)It indulges all of the progtard/DEI hate totems it can, and makes the movie messy and unfunny.

3) The movie actually has a pretty good climax were it structure differently with TC's big speech, which might've made a good satirical ending if properly followed up on. Buuuuut, the movie wants to push Greeny revenge, guilt and hate. Again unfunny and not satire.

Pretty much the only reason for this movie to exist is to give Tom Cruise a chance to deliver his own "You can't handle the truth" scene as in "AFew Good Men"

He does a great job with it.

TL/DR Makers should've watched "Dr Starngelove" a few hundred times more, they don't understand satire. A mess you can watch streaming.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing (aka Eloquent Depression) at October 13, 2026 10:41 AM (qRla/)

182 Created 1868–1877

The painting is based on a refrain from an old French or Breton song: "Alas, I know a love song, / Sad or happy, each in turn"

A medieval maiden plays a portable keyboard organ, an armor-clad knight listens in quiet contemplation, and Cupid (with arrows slung over his shoulder) slowly pumps the organ's bellows. A border of spring flowers symbolizing love and bitterness frames the foreground. (AI Overview)

Burne-Jones associated the scene with his affair with artist and model Maria Zambaco (1843–1914). As one critic said of this painting, "There is no story: nothing to guess at, but everything to feel." (The Met)

Lovely, but would pass hanging. Thank you.

@NBCNews
A Republican political group accidentally spent nearly $25,000 running ads to help Sen. Susan Collins in Portland.
Portland, Oregon, that is. Not Portland, Maine.

209 The running for school board in my town has always lost. He is a R in a heavily D town. Other people running for school board have just their names or things like, "Support every student". This year his signs say, "Educate, don't overtax." I know him. He is a smart and caring guy . I hope he wins because I thought that was very clever.

We also saw "Gone With the Wind" last night.

A fave of the missus.

The first half is great, brilliant stuff.

The second half....meh, girly romance shenanigans for the Ladies.

Great movie though, if you've never watched it.

215 I'm so sick of paganism being celebrated in the West.

Canada is basically all Indians and Chinese now. And MAID victims are 99% white. They're being very aggressive about the Great Replacement up there, even moreso than Europe.

216 I don't watch many movies other than horror and asian but I didn't mind 'Prometheus.' Keeping in mind Doctor Who, Star Trek and Star Wars were already woke crap.

However, the scientist chick saying we're on an alien planet on a mission of peace so leave your guns here was pretty stupid.

And 'Freddy Got Fingered' wasn't that bad either. Mainly because Hollywood has declined SO MUCH that it looked like Shakespeare.

217 The dead swans lay in the stagnant pool
They lay. They rotted they turned
around occasionally
bits of flesh fell off of them
from time to time,
and sank into the pool's mire
They also smelt a great deal

218 The outage maps nearly every power/electric utility company has will show the extent of the outage, how many are affected, and (maybe) the estimated time/days it'll take.

Plus, workers from other states are there in FL and have to coordinate with local utility companies. And that includes the people who take down trees, move debris, etc.

People here bitch about it too. They've no clue what it takes to restore power to large swaths of a state or county. And haven't even thought about a generator.

The speech that Mammy gives to Melanie when she has her come to talk to Rhett is one of the greatest in film. Hattie McDaniel makes that movie for me.

I'll raise you a Dylan Thomas...

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I'll raise you a Philip Larkin:

Sexual intercourse began in 1963
(Which was rather late for me)
Between the "Chatterly" ban
And the Beatles' first LP.
