France Races Towards a Debt Crisis as the Nation Continues to be Besieged by Violent Foreigners Demanding to be Paid for Peace

Before getting to that, let me offer a completely-unrelated bit of history. Via Google AI:

Danegeld was a tax raised in Anglo-Saxon England and Francia from the 9th to the 11th centuries to pay tribute or protection money to Viking raiders to stop them from ravaging the land.

Key Historical Facts

• Meaning: The word comes from Old English, literally translating to "Dane payment" or "Dane yield".

• Early Tribute vs. Army Tax: Originally known as gafol when paid directly to Vikings as bribes, it later evolved into a kingdom-wide land tax called heregeld (army tax) used to fund a standing defensive force or pay mercenary armies.

• King Æthelred the Unready: The practice became most prominent during the reign of King Æthelred II (978--1016), who paid massive quantities of silver pennies (such as £10,000 in 991 CE and up to £48,000 in 1012 CE) to buy off invaders

With that irrelevant, off-topic mention of large bribes paid to violent invaders to not loot and pillage and kill them, let's turn to a completely different subject.

France's, uh, guests are demanding, supposedly, more "resources" for schools.

This demand comes at a very bad time. Because France's dysfunctional government is made up of alleged "centrists" and even some "conservatives" in a coalition with socialists and communists, no one can agree on a budget.

So they just keep borrowing money, growing the deficit more and more.

You can only borrow freely until the markets begin to doubt you can ever repay your debts. And then the cost of borrowing rises, and you have to borrow more and more at higher and higher interest rates until it becomes impossible to repay the debt and then people stop lending you money completely, and your finances collapse.

France is now in this doom-loop of increasing debt and compounding interest on the debt.

For most of the past decade, lending money to France was considered almost as safe as lending money to Germany.

That belief is now breaking down, and it is happening fast.

Last week, investors demanded up to 5% a year to lend to the French government for 10 years. France had not faced borrowing costs that high on its 10-year bonds since July 2002.

The extra return investors want to hold French debt instead of German debt rose to its highest level since the eurozone debt crisis of 2011-2012.

France now pays more to borrow than Italy and Greece, two countries that sat at the centre of that crisis.

This matters well beyond the bond market. Government borrowing costs influence the rates on mortgages and business loans and the interest bill that every French taxpayer ends up covering.

...

Beyond the rise in France's 10-year bond yield to 5%, its widening gap with Germany shows investors are increasingly concerned about French debt.

Its premium over Germany's equivalent Bund reached 152 basis points, or 1.52 percentage points, returning to levels associated with the 2011 eurozone crisis.

Intesa Sanpaolo strategists, led by Gian Marco Salcioli, argue that the speed of the move matters more than its level.

When yields jump this fast, they say, the fear shifts from the price of borrowing to the risk of not being repaid in full, and France is the clearest example.

"The move tends to transform rate risk into something broader, first and foremost credit risk," Salcioli said in a note to clients.

Díaz-Alvarez said this was "the largest weekly widening in said spread in seventeen years."

Politico 4 Kidz, Axios:

France is dealing with a major debt crisis and social unrest ahead of its presidential election next year.

Why it matters: Worries are rising about contagion in Europe and beyond, and the situation is drawing comparisons with the sovereign debt crisis that rocked the European Union in the 2010s.

"Government bond yields in France are spiraling out of control. Contagion to the rest of high-debt Europe is unfolding rapidly," Brookings' Robin Brooks wrote recently.

Where it stands: Yields on government debt are rising across Europe and in the U.S., but the situation in France is worse.

Investors are demanding higher yields to hold French debt, compared with bonds from Germany, which are seen as a safer alternative.
On Friday, the difference, or spread, between the two countries' bond yields, was the widest it has been since the debt crisis.

The spread is widening due to "higher sovereign default risk in France," Macquarie's Thierry Wizman wrote in a note Thursday titled: "Are the French Toast?"

Meanwhile, the foreign guests continue ravaging the countryside while demanding the peasants pay them more money in exchange for a few months of pillage-free "peace."

A. France is in massive debt.

There is a second example from British history even older than the Dane Geld. As Rome started dying off in the West the central government cut of Britain, told them to work out their issue of raiders and pirates on their own because they could not - they were basically working on the south coasts of France and Spain and Italy proper. This was somewhere in the 410s AD.

So the British locals called up some Saxon tribesmen to defend their shores from the pirates and raiders, which worked for a while. Then after a bit of looking around at the situation, with Saxons being the sole military around, they started taking over the part of England in the South and next to the channel. Kent, Isle of Wight, all that area. And the other Angles and such followed them in.

Not really, reserve currencies are different. It is more that debt financing gets much worse the more it is external to the state. In an ideal world, the currency can depreciate, making the country produce cheaper goods and consume less imported ones, but stuck in the Eurozone, France cannot resort to that.

FWIW, both Japan and China have debts of over 300 percent of GDP. But in both cases, internally financed mostly, not external.

I would phrase it put off the crisis rather than talking their way out of it. There are tactics that a large debtor can use that smaller ones cannot. And that applies to countries too--too big to fail means that the other countries in the Eurozone are forced to do things like require payins by those with savings and liquid assets to prop up the currency. Works in the short run but destroys trust in the long run just like formal defaults or allowing massive inflation as a soft default does.

I lived through the early 80's and that particular claim is simply not true. Eh, a lot of that was greenie bullshit that the Euros simply cannot admit was fraud. Like Germany shutting down its nukes and ending domestic coal use. UK with its insipid and stupid net Zero regulations, and so on. The French at least were not stupid enough to shut down their nuclear power plants. All of them though have failed to try to explore for oil and gas domestically except Norway which is an associate EU member, not full.

Sorry but that ain't ever gonna happen. In less than 5 years social security goes "bankrupt" and every single person drawing a SS check will have to take at least a 10% haircut and those people vote in huge numbers. The only way to avoid that is to increase deficit spending even more which is what will happen.

Realistic projections have SS, medicare/medicaid and interest on the debt consuming 100% of all federal tax revenues before 2032 with that growth at least doubling every 10 years.

We ain't growing our way out of this mess.

119 The three economic pillars of the Euro are Germany, France and Italy. There are no other major players that can shoulder the Euro, and all three are at the rope's end financially.
Germany is looking at de-industrialization, France is looking at a bond and financial crisis, and Italy has PM Meloni talking to the US about a bilateral trade agreement. The Euro does not have sufficient value in it to support it as a straight fiat currency, and there really is not enough ability to satisfy anyone that the Euro based bonds are worth taking a risk on since there may not be any ability to pay them back except in inflationary Euros maybe. No matter how much everyone likes using Euros for foreign exchange, it is looking risky to hold those .

the bad news is that they hold a lot of US Treasuries and bonds, and will probably start dumping them for things like buying diesel, so the Treasury auctions will be depressed which will look like an economic failure. The good news is that the Treasury will be buying them back at a discount, possibly wiping out US debt.

Maybe if France defaults, this time we can ask them to occupy Iran for us.

Stealing Russian assets and trying to liquidate them was a blunder, because plenty of people abroad who stash money in foreign banks for a "rainy day" at home suddenly found out the EU could pull out the carpet on them. So these kind of accounts started leaving for safer shores.

But the problem behind the problem is that EU-socialism was always robbing Peter to save Paul, making your system weaker over time. What happens when Peter and Paul are both equally sickly? What happens when you have a hundred administrators managing Peter to Paul payments instead of one?

At some point, Reality reasserts itself.

Argentina is an example with multiple defaults--when it did borrow after a default, then it had to pay higher interest rates and the refusal to cut spending led to virtually no external funds flowing into Argentina for awhile and assets being seized abroad to pay for them. Got more examples if you want them of 'austerity' and countries including the UK post WWII when it was broke.

Want do some reading history try This Time It's Different, by Carmines and Rogoff. About one thousand years of economic tomfoolery of the nations. Both are noted economic historians but my guess is you would rather bitch and whine than actually read something.

I am used to a far higher level of insults when I submitted papers for peer review or at conferences. I don't get riled much about it.

But simply most of the macroeconomics I learned including Chicago and Vienna schools as well as Keynesian and Marxist, are not borne out in reality. Microeconomics is pretty much a science which relies on price as its key foundation. Macro depends on what assumptions you make about what is good, bad, etc. and then you see the real world makes a pig's breakfast over assertions from a model because your model is underspecified (doesn't include all relevant variables). Tariffs are a perfect example. Taxes are another, so is borrowing, GDP, national debt, inflation, etc.

We can find little truths but there is no big truth that we can trust even analyzing a domestic economy; it gets far worse when we bring in a multiplicity of other foreign actors into the equation.

So no, simple thoughts don't make for reality.

And fwiw, Dave in Florida was not wrong but the Democrat fraud was so massive that it made him look wrong in 2020. I was right there when that happened.

196 Argentina always has had a determination to follow through on the social welfare side of things, since that was Peron's path to stability, and a way for the Kirchners to stay in power -- I think it also had to do with a lot of very dedicated Italian unionists and anarchists immigrating in the late 1800's due to oppression in Italy about then and they colored the economics quite a bit. After the hyperinflation they pegged the peso to the US Dollar, and got bogged down because they couldn't afford the social welfare they promised.
Social welfare bought votes, bought participation, and was always a ready source of corruption. One of the things Milei has done is push the price of social services back onto the provincial governments when he couldn't cut them completely, and this makes counting centavos important. I believe that Minister of Public Security Patricia Bullrich is also quite focused on stomping out corruption. This was not focused on last time, and it is why they had to drop the peg

Milei also seeded the ideas of it by talking publicly about the economics for near on 20 years, and the Argentines had gone through so many economic cycles they were tired of them. Argentina has not had a 30 year bond go through to maturity since 1890, and they were facing a hyperinflation again. It helps that he is an outsider and gathered a very talented team to be his cabinet. I have no idea if there is that level of talent in any EU state anymore.

217 The only right answer to these things is a set of barked out commands...

All ranks lock and load 1 beanbag round!
All ranks, live ammo to the ready!
Front rank kneel!
Volley fire on my command!
To the ready!
Aim!
Fire!

All ranks load live ammo!
Rear rank, advance through!
etc....

Well not in "serious" circles. EU groupthink is strong, no matter how dumb the results. Consequences? what are those?

Aug 1914, Germany's biggest trade partners, in order:

British Empire
Russia
USA
Austria-Hungary
France
Italy

And they went to war with half of them that month. By 1917 they were at war with 5 of these 6 countries.

Plus ca change and all that shit.

I have a No. 1 Mk 3 and a P14 with Volley Sights. The Brits dropped them finally in 1916 to simplify manufacturing.
