First World Problems...

Teadust26.jpg

That wonderful photograph is of the bottom of a loose tea tin. Never mind that the tins were designed to stack nicely, at the expense of getting at the last bit of tea. And yes, there is a lip at the top that corresponds to the indentation at the bottom, so the last bit of tea CANNOT. BE. POURED.

It exposes a larger problem...the tea leaf dust that is created by the bumping and banging of the tins during filling, packaging, shipping, sale, and use!

Obviously the solution is to pack the leaves in single layers on some sort of soft medium so that they are cushioned. But Big Tea has no interest in preserving the customer experience, and would rather sell the maximum amount of tea, even in the form of dust!

And the biggest problem? I don't even drink tea!

18 I have a first-world problem, and I only wish it involved nothing but tea dust.

Our 6-year-old washer started occasionally leaking water back into the drum, and after shutting off first one valve and then the other, I determined it was the cold-water valve. We had replaced one on our old washer years ago so we knew we could do this.

So I went to the manufacturer's website, put in the model number, and got the part number. I ordered it from Amazon (an OEM part, I made sure) partly because it was a little cheaper and partly because Amazon returns are so easy.

That turned out to be foreshadowing. . .

23 I think the only reasonable solution to the tea problem is to laminate each leaf and place it in a 3-ring binder.

Then toss those binders into Boston Harbor once a year as a ceremonial reminder of our roots.

31 Today we went to replace the part, and when we took the cover off we discovered that the part actually had a QR code on it. When we tried to put in the new part that was about half an inch higher than the old part, I used the QR code and discovered that the old part was a different number than the replacement part that LG had told me to get.

Sigh.

So I went searching for the "correct" part. Except, every website, INCLUDING LG, told me that the QR code part number was not the correct part for my model. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have it, so I ordered it from the Home Depot appliance repair website because it seems they have the least complicated return system, just in case. Although not as easy as buying something directly from Home Depot. It arrives Wednesday.

Wish me luck.

89 Recently got cheesed-off at the local Subaru dealer who went from charging $49 for an oil change to $149.

Since the filter is mounted on top of the engine, I procured an oil extractor and went in search of the special 'high-pressure' filters Subies use (no Fram or Wix for them!). Manual lists the part, ending in -020, which was confirmed visually with the filter on the car.

Checking sites to order from, one said it had been superceded. That part turned out to be a -021. Searching for that, a different site said it was superceded by -022.

Guess which # the dealer is still selling, at 2.3x the $$ you can get it online?

92 AOP, the QR code is just read by your phone's camera, and then the website pops up on your default browser. I had to learn how to use that during the plague.

In this case I'm glad it had the QR code because I would be at a loss as to what to try next, except calling a repair company which would be way more expensive.

That presumes one has a QR code reader in the phone, and that one has data enabled on one's cellular plan. If I were dictator, every QR code, regardless of where and how posted would be required to be accompanied by a plain-language label disclosing everything embedded in the code. Violations to be punished by death by bunga-bunga.

I got a $800 Mini-PC from Amazon a few years ago. Made the mistake of not opening it to check the contents because I got it on sale and was waiting to get the monitor and accessories for it.

When I finally did open it up I discovered what was in the correct box was a Mini-PC which was worth about $120. Somebody had bought one, took out the more expensive PC and replaced it with the cheaper one, then sent it back to Amazon fir a refund.

It took me over a month arguing with Amazon to get a refund because I’d gone beyond the 30 day return policy.

Lesson learned, check your Amazon packages as soon as you receive them.

101 I brew tea like an American, using tea bags

My FWP. I have to replace or have someone replace the 1/2 bumper on my horse trailer. My other trailer had caulk along the bumper but this one did not and water accumulated and rusted the square tubing that the rubber bumper was mounted to with a steel bar through the back of the bumper and metal screws. A local guy was doing trailer repairs for a while and fixed where the other 1/2 bumper had the same thing happen by drilling through the angle iron support at the back of the trailer and using a bolt in the rusted spot.

Problem: I am dreading drilling a hole for a bolt. Several years ago I fixed where my tack door hinges failing and drilling the holes for the replacement hinges that I bolted on (I could find no one who would weld them on for me) took 3 drill bits, that all had to be re-sharpened before I was done. This is just one hole to drill, the worst part is probably going to be getting it lined up correctly.

It’s Ohio so there’s a good chance it was a Republican working at the hospital there, and couldn’t contain him/herself knowing that he is a mental patient running for U.S. senate.

I don’t think the hospital officially released the information, somebody ratted him out to a reporter.

lead glazes were used because they had a lower firing temperature for melting, that temperature is up there with the final firing temperatures for stoneware and standard clay bisque ceramics.
Porcelain, IIRC, requires a much higher temperature for firing, and would not require a lead glaze, though I think Wedgewood did actually use lead glazes in the 1800's
I know lead poisoning was an occupational hazard in the English ceramics industry, especially for the girls who did the painting.

The only purpose for HIPAA was to assure that politicians would not have their AIDS / HIV status revealed. The fact that your medical records now can be revealed to anyone other than your family is merely a side benefit.

234 If Freako’s stay was leaked to a 3rd party unknown to the joint, he could plausibly deny the story as hearsay.

235 HIPAA didn't stop my boss from appointing his assistant to call me and ask about my COVID vaccine status. This even after I explained to him that his inquiry by itself violated the statute. So I guess HIPAA is now more of a guideline than a rule...

The rule is for hospital / pt care workers,. They can ask you. you don't have to answered.

237 Carried this knife for years, it's very handy, all of the tools are sharp and work well. It's so small you can easily forget it's there.
But it will cut your packages open.
It will trim that errant thread.
It won't win a knife fight.

240 Her Majesty, when she was handling, would never have gone into the ring without both the dog and herself looking perfect. No detail was small enough to overlook. I remember a big Fall show in Columbus. Dorothy MacDonald was the breed judge and Roberta Campbell was the Hound Group judge. So HM wore a red sweater and a Tartan skirt. Breed and Group 2. That's using your kopf.

That said, take the empty tin, fill with water, replace lid, use as target at the rifle range. Results will be impressive.

245 219 So the fact that someone was simply AT a medical facility is protected by HIPAA? Then why are we are ALWAYS hearing about people (e.g., Trump) going to the doctor, etc.?

Posted by: Weird at October 11, 2026 03:29 PM (Ovx+P)

I think Presidential doctor visits are typically announced in order to avoid rumors and speculation about the President's health. Nothing to stop the patient from talking about their health, HIPPA prohibits medical personnel and facilities from disclosing patient information without permission from the patient. And I believe merely confirming that someone was a patient is a violation, however I'm not a lawyer.

You already said you use a 1/16th of a teaspoon of sugar so I know you're doing it wrong. I bet you don't even put ice in it, amateur.

That was different, Covid was going to kill everyone unless you were vaxed and wore three paper masks.
