However the interesting part is he made her stomach look a bit bigger then that.

So was she really carrying around a few extra pounds (unusual for that era) or was it artistic license?

Now my understanding was women shaving pits and legs became a thing in the flapper era but thanks to CBD I've now seen plenty of art from the era before that which suggests it wasn't uncommon at least for things like art before that.

111 This is a lovely portrait. Lehmann really captured the lithe, flexible pose of a woman curled up and relaxed. This isn't some Barbie doll hard body. The figure is soft and very, very feminine and comfortable with her naked self. What makes the painting even more effective and evocative is her subtle facial expression, eying the viewer even as the viewer is eying her. There is also a dream-like quality as the foreground starts to envelope her legs.

One of the advantages of getting older is being able to enjoy and appreciate such loveliness without the hubba hubba theatrics.

A rather odd artist: Henri Lehmann was a German-born French historical painter and portraitist, best known for his vivid, dreamlike paintings of lush tropical jungles and exotic animals, despite having never left France.

In a letter to his mistress, Lehmann described the woman depicted here as one of the "four most beautiful girls that you could have as a model in Rome." The sensual curve of the figure’s back is in line with odalisques by Lehmann’s revered master, J. A. D. Ingres. This ravishing study was made in preparation for a painting of bathers at a river; inspired by Victor Hugo’s poem "Bièvre," it was exhibited at the Salon of 1842 as Femmes près de l’eau. Acquired by the Belgian royal family, the Salon painting was destroyed in a fire in the 1890s.
