Gun Thread: It's October and October Means TXMoMe Edition!

100426 cal scaled 2.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the October Means TXMoMe Edition? That's right folks - the big event is less than #two weeks away! I hope you are rushing your TXMoMe attendance preparations to completion!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

2026 TXMoMe

100426 texas flag scaled.jpg

They Mome'n down in Texas!

The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 16-17. This is the eleventh annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. A double-doozy even. A bigly double-doozy! If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute, and I have said this probably nine hundred and twelve times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

TXMoMe veterans: please jump into the comments to encourage the scairdy-cats to join in the fun! What was your first MoMe like? What were you expecting? Were you surprised? Did you have a great time?

If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks. I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. If you aren't a shooter, I guarantee you will not feel out of place and will have a great time. No fooling!

Are all y'all getting excited? Weasel are!!

10/04/26 Update/Reminders/New Stuff

No big changes this week. However, our pal Piper did such a fantastic job with a TXMoMe fashion Guide in last Sunday's ONT that I thought it should be included again here in case anyone missed it. Thanks Piper, very nicely done!

What to Wear to the AOSHQ Texas MoMe

The short version: comfortable picnic clothes. The long version is below, because a Texas ranch in the sun will punish anyone who treats this like a cocktail reception, even those of us who are inclined to treat everything like a cocktail reception.

This is an outdoor meetup on a ranch. You will be standing, sitting, walking, eating, and possibly wandering toward whatever shade you can find. Dress for heat, dirt, grass, and a long stretch of being outside. If it looks good at a backyard cookout and you can still move in it after three hours, you are in the right neighborhood.

The basic uniform

Wear something you would actually picnic in.
• Breathable shirt: cotton, linen, or a light performance tee. Light colors help in the sun. A button-down you can leave open over a tee works if you want a little coverage.
• Shorts or casual pants: shorts, jeans you already know are comfortable, or lightweight pants. Remember, if you wear shorts, there are bugs and taller grasses out there. If this bothers you, think more light weight pants.
• Closed-toe shoes you can walk in: sneakers, trail shoes, or broken-in boots. Ranch ground is not a manicured lawn.
• A hat with a brim. Texas sun is not a suggestion.

That is the whole look. Comfortable. Outdoor. Picnic. Ranch.

IMG_2965-rr.jpg

What “comfortable” actually means here

Comfortable does not mean “I just rolled out of the car in pajama pants.” It means you can sit on a bench or the ground, stand in a cluster talking, walk to the next activity, and not spend the afternoon tugging at clothes that were a bad idea.

Bring a light layer. Even on a hot day, shade, wind, or evening can change the temperature. A hoodie or light flannel stuffed in the car is cheap insurance.

Sun, sweat, and ranch realities

Assume sun. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat will do more for you than any outfit choice.

Assume you will get dusty. Do not wear anything you would be sad to see with grass stains or ranch dirt on it.

Assume bugs. If you are the person mosquitoes treat like a buffet, long sleeves in a light fabric or a bit of repellent.

What not to wear

The brand-new white sneakers you want to keep white, and anything that needs dry cleaning. When walking around the property, you don’t want open toed shoes, unless you are okay with surprises from the grass in the form of stickers or bitey things. This is not the moment to channel Johnny Cash. All black leather is cool, but not when it’s really hot!

A simple packing list

• Breathable shirt and comfortable bottoms
• Walking shoes, closed toe
• Hat and sunglasses
• Sunscreen
• Lip balm – guys too! The air can be VERY dry
• Light extra layer
• Water bottle
• Hearing protection if you are going to shoot
• Safety glasses if you are going to shoot
• Raincoat or poncho because you never know!

You are going to a ranch picnic with the Horde, not a photoshoot. In fact, we don’t even like to take photos! Dress like someone who plans to stay outside, eat, talk, and enjoy people outside of grey boxes.

Call for ideas: I have been doing the same class on rifles Friday morning for years now. Are you getting tired of it yet? I would like to have the session be more of an open forum where your particular questions can be answered with a discussion by the group. I am perfectly willing to keep doing the same presentation, or parts of it, but think a roundtable forum would be interesting and informative. Please let me know what you think in the comments.

Volunteers: If you are interested in helping out, please send me a note (gunthread at protonmail dot com) on when you plan to arrive (day and approximate time). It is really critical to have this information for scheduling and to make certain we have the proper coverage to make the shooting portion safe and enjoyable for all concerned. Thank you in advance!

**

Shooters: Bring your own hearing and eye protection, and wear sensible shoes as the ground on the ranges can be uneven! Also, please plan on stopping somewhere along your way to Texas and picking up some ammunition if you plan to shoot and aren't bringing your own weapons/ammo. Everyone is very generous with sharing, but please don't rely on the generosity of others to provide everything for you. You can really help out by grabbing a box of 9mm or 5.56mm or whatever you want to shoot. Here is a link to Brinson Power Sports in Corsicana which sells ammo. They also sell ATV's if you want to grab one of those while you're there.

Anyhoo...

For a while I have been conducting a Rifle Clinic on Friday morning followed by range time Friday afternoon and then again well into Saturday. Most of you (I think) have endured this presentation before, so if there are other topics you would like to have covered, speak up in the comments and I will try to address your request.

We have also been steadily refining the handgun portion of the program and this year will be focusing on the static pistol range as well as continuing to offer a separate setup for gun-curious beginners desiring one-on-one supervision and instruction. If you are a novice shooter, or even have never been to the range before and think guns are icky, you are welcome to shoot! Just see an RSO and they will set you up with an experienced shooter to help you.

These times are approximate and programs may change as weather conditions and participation warrant. We anticipate a hard stop on both ranges at 1pm on Saturday to allow everyone to participate in the bigly fun TXMoMe festivities.

Range Safety
You will note there are combined rifle and handgun range safety briefings both days and attendance is mandatory if you want to shoot. We take your safety seriously and ask everyone who wants to shoot plan on attending this important briefing. Again, we are conducting one combined safety brief each day. No exceptions.

At the conclusion of each day's safety briefing you will be asked to sign a general liability waiver, after which you will receive a color-coded wrist band. The color is different each day, and it is your ticket onto the range(s) for the day. No wrist band, no shooting that day. Don't want to sign the waiver? No problem, just do not expect to shoot. If you miss the mandatory range safety briefing which is mandatory and must be attended, you are welcome to watch the live fire activities from designated observation areas.

All shooters are asked to check in with an RSO (sporting an Orange Cap of Dorkiness for easy identification) upon your arrival at either of the ranges who will answer questions and direct you to an open firing position. The RSOs wield unspeakable power so it is in your best interest to be nice to them. Want to do things your way? I suggest that your own personal range on your own personal property is a good place for expressing your individuality.

IMPORTANT: I would hope this goes without saying, but anyone failing to immediately and politely follow RSO instructions will be removed from the range(s). Period. No exceptions. This means YOU.

I will probably think of more things to yell about in the coming weeks so please stay tuned.

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

14 I carry a large bandana in my range bag, to help keep hot brass from finding its way down the front of a lady (such as the second picture)'s shirt.

Since apparently the 'ette dressing standard is elevating, as depicted in the first picture, I will need to discern a better solution, as a large bandana will not, I fear, provide adequate coverage.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at October 04, 2026 07:10 PM (0sNs1)

15 Weasel and Gun thread readers, you might want to take a look at the 9 Hole Reviews YouTube channel's podcast this week. One of the co-hosts and his guest discuss the practicalities of using 5.56mm NATO as a long range (400+ meters) DMR role. They discuss the interplay between barrel length, optics selection, and ammunition choices on the long range performance of the 5.56mm NATO round at extreme (out to 1,000 meters) ranges and whether individual shooters can achieve repeatable, accurate fire at these distances. You might find their conclusions interesting.

31 I was lucky enough to spend yesterday at a special range event where I got to fire off all sorts of fun toys. The day started with a pistol and three gun mini-course. After lunch it was lots of suppressed pistols and rifles, some full-auto, a .460 revolver (KA-BOOM!!!), and a .308 that was hands-down the most accurate thing I've ever shot - and I've shot some real tack-drivers with ammo that was form-fired to that individual chamber.

I think the last time I put that much lead downrange was my 2018 urban rifle class at Thunder Range Oregon. Very therapeutic. Best of all, I didn't have to clean any guns afterwards!

==========
Military is confined to what cartridges and bullets fit their weapons that their logistic train supports. Civilians aren't.

And there are better choices than the 5.56x45 in whatever bullet choice for long distance shooting out of an AR frame. In bolt action, even more cartridges come into play.

There are better cartridges for long range that fit in AR package (without going to the AR-10 size or some kludge like Ruger's SFAR) out there like the 6.5 Grendel for example and the later Hornady ARC series. At 400 in practical lethality, the 6.8 Spec or the 6.5 Grendel are more than adequate and have actually been adopted by some foreign militaries.

If you had to go 1000 in .22 caliber, the 224 Valkyrie will do it as it was designed for it.

60 What's burning tonight, Weasel? I'm about to select a stick for a late (for me) burn. I talk with my friend down in TX (Austin region) while we both destroy a cigar, and for the first time *I* have to delay to a later time due to heat. Unsurprisingly he's had to do it a number of times.

We're having record high heat here, though RH is not very high (not paper-dry, like during a Santa Ana, but moderate) so it's not that uncomfortable, just HOT. September is the warmest month here and most heat records are early October. Recall being let out of school as a kid 2 or 3 times when it hit 100 (no AC in the schools back then), always October.

Think I'll burn an Undercrown Maduro in honor of one of the selections at the MoMe - and because I love them.

Speaking of the Freak, I picked up my Paxton sign yesterday from my Chinese neighbor who’s a naturalized citizen and lived under Communism. She and several other Chinese here have been working their wazoos off to get out the vote. Btw, if any fellow Texan needs a Paxton sign, I could probably get a few and bring them to the festivities.

One thing missing from the clothing list is at least one set of clothes if there is a sudden storm. Twice I had to borrow a costume from Cow Horse Queen. At least a sweatshirt. Also there are fire ants so long pants are preferable and socks. Piper's recommendation of jeans and sensible shoes is smart.

Whig, the podcast looked at 5.56mm NATO chambered AR-15 platforms because it's by far the most common chambering and because shooters have been trying to push the 5.56mm NATO envelope with heavier, higher performance rounds (like 77 grain, Mk 262). Both of the hosts agreed that for serious long range work at 1,000 meters other calibers were far better for the job in hand.

69 Idaho Spudboy there's still one range duty day in the fall to see, but so far this year my day has had very few hunters sighting in. Typically there'll be 10-15 of them over the course of the morning, not members, bolt actions, optics, 10 or 20 shots - then gone. I make a habit of asking where they're hunting this time and always learn something. From up your way to CO to NM and UT and of course NV and AZ.

The rank and file military is more or less stuck on whatever Congress and the bureaucracy gives them and they have to make it work for a variety of missions. Spec Ops does what works for them within the confines of a budget and logistics.

But I see the same issue in civilian land where people try to make a cartridge into something it isn't with higher pressures, chamber and seating alterations, really light or really heavy bullets with different shanks and/or ogives, reshaping brass shoulders like PO Ackley did, etc. etc. Sort of the grass is always greener mentality. And the fact is we spend too much time and money on the tool and not enough on the software--e.g. training.

FWIW, Civilians have the advantage of being able to pick whatever cartridge best fits their needs and even having multiple rifles for different purposes here in the US (not so fortunate elsewhere!).

The military doesn't and often has had horrible weapons thrust upon them and good ones withdrawn due to vagaries of politics and bureaucracy. Makes sense for them to optimize what they have.

Use domestic ammo. Foreign ammo companies are often more limited on the powders they use than in the US and we shoot a lot more on average than other countries do. Try Federal Gold Medal wadcutters and you also get the advantage of more sensitive federal primers. You can find it for less than 30 bucks per 50 if you look.

10 mm cartridge like the 41 Magnum are fascinating cartridges, in part, because both kind of flopped initially but the 10mm has had a rebirth and the 41 has continued to be a niche cartridge.

Ditto for the 38 Super. It had to wait a long time for it to be rediscovered by IPSC shooters from when it was developed.

As for me, nerve damage in my hands preclude any desire for anything above a 357 Magnum nowadays in a heavy revolver though.

The carpal tunnel problem in my left hand is getting worse and just had a steroid shot in it to hold off surgery until my wife

137 10 mm cartridge like the 41 Magnum are fascinating cartridges, in part, because both kind of flopped initially but the 10mm has had a rebirth and the 41 has continued to be a niche cartridge.

's cataract surgery is done.
Posted by: whig at October 04, 2026 08:15 PM (E4rtv)

I think the 'magnum' in the name explains why the .41 mag stayed niche. The 10mm can be loaded from very spicy useful rounds that most FBI slackers couldn't handle down to .40 S&W loads. Heck, most 10mm pistols can chamber and fire .40.

I do have a .38 super and I like it enough but I'm not sure what problem it is trying to solve in 2026. It's not .357 SIG and that also has been abandoned more or less.

I'll ratchet up my prayers for you, for what it's worth.

Don't disagree with your analysis above. But a 41 Special could have and should have been created and the original intention was for police loadings about that power level.

Big heavy bullets have a good track record in stops--they open big holes for blood and their momentum carries them deep in their targets and are not deflected by bone, sinew, etc.

Corelokt rifle bullets are ancient in terms of bullet tech but still will bring home dinner if you can do the hit on the target.

Took 50ish years to iron out the kinks, plus other revolutions in war making the individual rifle round take a backseat, but it is in a pretty decent state now. There is a reason more and more armies adopt m4ish rifles and it isn't because they're cheap, free, or cool.

The main issue with the platform now is that the bolt lugs are JUST big enough for 5.56, and there isn't room for beefier ones.

We are long past the days when the rounds originally intended for the m1 or their post war copies in the 6-7mm range make sense for a general issue weapon. Once we get fire control shrunk down to ACOG/m68 size and weight there is a case to be made for some of the COTS rounds that are smaller than the new .277 but still stay supersonic to about 1k yards, that kick the shit out of .308 in terms of external ballistics in a much smaller weapon. Until then the juice isn't worth the squeeze over 5.56.

151 MAE,
Thinking back to last week's dialogue or the week before that, I can certainly see why you are using optics on pistols due to speed of target acquisition and accuracy.

I am wondering perhaps if your team has consider lean and mean couple of guys with SBR rifles--they are most likely to end a killer with one shot and with optics are scary accurate at short range versus pistols. Easier to use suppressors on them as well.

I think a bad breeze is blowing in from the Middle East and now is the time to consider not just the leftoid anti religious nut jobs but what is happening in Nigeria and other bleeding borders where churches are being targeted by the Religion of Pieces.

If the .41 Mag had been developed before the .44 Mag, it likely would have done very well. It came out not long before 9mm began rising in popularity with police. Semis were gaining in popularity, police didn't like carrying big N-Frames, and police (who were gaining women recruits) didn't deal with the recoil well. (The .41 Mag 'police' load wasn't well distributed, anyway.)

The .40 S&W was developed to deal with the police recoil problems that the 10mm had. The 10mm was adopted by the FBI after the Miami massacre, which *of course* had to be the fault of their 9mms, not crappy marksmanship or crappy tactics.

Be careful firing .40 S&W in a Glock 10mm chamber.

The markings on the box claim the bullet is a hollow base.

I just hope it groups decently.

40 S&W ballistics almost perfectly duplicate the old 38-40 in 180 gr bullets. Was always a decent revolver cartridge and long gun combination but never caught on like the 44-40 or even the 32-20.

I finally ended up with a 40 S&W way past its heyday and it is a pretty fun cartridge itself and good self defense one on par with the 45 ACP. The key though is avoiding it in small and light packages for shootability and even reliability reasons--both are best in service size pistols or longer.

I've always thought that the H&K 416 should have been adopted as the US Army's standard rifle. Instead, the USMC has made the H&K 416 the Marine standard rifle in its infantry and front-line units as the M27 while the US Army continues to soldier on with the M4A1. After 40 years, the invention of the H&K 416 fixed most of the problems seen with the early XM-16E1s through the present (overheating w/ full auto fire, reliability, mean rounds between failures, etc.). But the US Army rejected the H&K 416 primarily due to the cost per unit. Fair point, but most Marines who have used the M-16A4 or M4 before switching over to the M27 say that the M27 is a huge improvement.

Cannelures are better for ammo reliability but some accuracy buffs in shooting competitions hate them as it can reduce accuracy a bit by deforming the dead soft wadcutter bullets.

Those are normally swaged pure lead rather than cast alloy, Comes in rolls of lead wire that is snipped and then pressured through a swager for sizing by hydraulic pressure like toothpaste through a tube.

Lots of old service Glocks out there in 40. Relatively cheap. Get the service size though or better as subcompact or compact 40 S&Ws are more unpleasant and generally less accurate to shoot due to recoil enhancement.

Personally though, I would go with the Beretta PX4, the M&P, the XD, or the older Smith steel 40 S&W Third Generation pistols in service length barrel size or longer. The Beretta with its unique rotating recoil makes a 40 S&W recoil feel like a 9mm, the M&P has better ergonomics and a thumb safety on some models, the XD is somewhat similar to the M&P but with a grip safety if you like those, and the old third generation in steel by Smith has the weight to tame the 40 S&W sharp initial recoil impulse into a much softer experience.

I've never had problems with aluminum Blazer in 9mm, 40, or 45, even 38 Special back in the day.

I actually keep a few of the cases now and again to make bullet dummies for die setup on bullet seating for reloading. Makes it quick and easy to dial in bullet seating for pistol dies if you have a dummy with the specs rather than using live ammo. Aluminum does not affect dies like steel cases would doing the same thing plus steel can rust.

211 So far, so good. No malf in 200 rounds (I don't have a lot of .40)
Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards

It is more that the 40 S&W headspaces on the case opening like the 9mm and depending on your extractor grip, you will suffer from too much headspace. Normally not much of a problem but like firing a bunch of 38 Specials in 357 chambers, you get crud, flamecutting at times, and other deterioration of the 10mm chamber in the barrel which can affect firing the primary round (10mm).

They actually make reamers to clean the crud out of 357 revolvers and return the chamber to spec for those that shoot a lot of 38 Special (at a much lower pressure) in 357 chambers.

I would definitely stay away from using cast bullets in 40 S&W in 10mm chambers particularly. That is one of the biggest contributors to mucking up a 357 chamber in revolvers from firing 38 Specials.

Ruger after acquiring Marlin took some time bringing those back in the 1894 frame but they are now rolling with them but a huge backlog of customers for them. You might have better luck though looking for a Rossi Puma which is based on the 1892 Winchester design. You might have to have a gunsmith thread the barrel though.

I think Rossi does some 'tacticool' versions now and again in black plastic stocks, picatinny top rails, and threaded barrels on occasion. Now would probably be the time to start looking for them online.

224 Apropos of nothing,

The whole headspacing issue is why the 38 Special never did that well after introduction. Its specs wandered and it was a semi rim cartridge that theoretically headspaced on the rim. The accuracy was poor as chambers varied in length and thus from pistol to pistol, you had often too much headspace so accuracy depending on how much the extractor bit on the case for consistency.

It now is headspaced on the case mouth and the accuracy problems went away. Older ones prior to IPSC revolution in the late 70's and 80's though are likely to need a modern barrel fitted that headspaces on the case mouth.

235 Good grief, I didn't even provide my range report. Far better session than last time, guess the muscle memory is there - just needs to be exercised. Majority of the shot were in the 3 inch circle. But I got to wondering about those which were not. Went thru the fundamentals list, but still not consistent. So then I started examining my physical posture, and realized I was tensing up alot when I went to shoot. So, keeping the arms straight and grip firm, I tried to relax most of the rest of my body. And it worked. 5/5 every time. So, I'm adding another sub-fundamental to the list!

Range report.
FWIW, I fitted a scope to a 1943 Savage Lend Lease No. 4, Mk 1* Lee Enfield. When I got it, someone had locked the bolt into the receiver on a barrelled action. No stock, etc. Matching barrel, bolt, and receiver only.

The receiver was tapped on the side of the action with three screws but no scope mount. It took about ten years to finally identify the missing scope mount which was a Parker Hales A29 side mount which I finally obtained. Another year or so before getting the matching Parker Hale scope rail and the Parker Hale rings.

Finally leveled, mounted the scope, and used a Tasco barrel collimator to mount the scope. Bedded the scope rail to the scope mount with epoxy. Put on a Vortex 3x9 scope on it with long eye relief. That was my weekend project. Done after a mere twelve years or so.

One of the things in flight training was all of the Notes, Warnings, and Cautions written in the manual was "They are written in blood." They were all written in there because a jet got bent or crashed or hurt people. It's the deadlier, more mechanical version of: "Doc, it hurts when I do this." "Well, don't do that."

246 228 Do you mean .38 Super, Whig?
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

Dammit, yes I did. Mind was on other things.

FWIW those that are probably not interested. Handgun (and a few really old rifle cartridges) either headspace on the rim, the semi rim (much reduced rim size), or on the case mouth. The 38 Special and most revolver cartridges are rimmed cartridges and headspace on the rim. A few are semi rimmed like the 38 Super where the rim diameter is barely larger than the back of the case so that the extractor can grab it. Problems with that include brass variations, little or no sealing of the chamber, and wandering headspace depending on factors like extractor tension and wear. Last are teh modern rimless types like the 45 ACP, 9mm etc. These all headspace on the case mouth.

265 A bit more on case rims. Back in the olden days, mercuric primers were used in brass cases and the brass alloy production means meant inconsistent quality. Mercury softens brass over time (which is why reloading brass cartridges that used a mercuric primer--gone since the early 30s' is a no no.). So to prevent a blast of hot gas back at the shooter, both rifle and handgun cartridges used rims to in effect seal the chamber and deflect safely whatever gas might escape from a ruptured cartridge upon firing.

Brass quality got better, mercuric primers were replaced, and machine guns and semi auto firearms came about. Case rims create a lot of problems for semi and full auto firing. It can be done but better not. The US and Germans went to rimless cases (which means the rim is not larger than in diameter than the back of the case proper) which feed better in semi auto and full auto rifles, machine guns, etc. and we get a divergence--rifles headspaced on the shoulder in rimless cartridges and straight walled pistol cartridges like the 9mm and the 45 ACP headspaced on the case mouth.

271 Headspace itself is a mystical mention in firearms but it is really no more than a set specification so that mfg ammo can be safely fired in a firearm that matches that specification with some variance.

Too long headspace creates some troubles, too short more. Firearms that deviate too much from teh specification whether it is wear, improper mfg, or bubba alterations can risk safety, generally reduce ability to reload the brass, and can have accuracy and functioning problems.

Nowadays, if avoiding antique oddities, all pistols and rifles headspace on either the rim of the cartridge, the case mouth, or on bottleneck cartridges, a reference point on the neck of the case back to the bolt head.
