Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Thursday Overnight Open Thread - October 1, 2026![]() From Seaeyes Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Thursday ONT! Mixed bag of content for those who care. Open thread, as always. On time, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight? Just deliver the damn mail! USPS To Put Cameras in Trucks That Scan Roads for ‘Community Safety’ The United States Postal Service is running a pilot program to put cameras in its mail carrier trucks that continuously scan roads and signs, map roadways and sidewalks, and improve “community safety,” according to a letter posted by a labor union and a statement from the agency to 404 Media. The idea is that, since the trucks are constantly traveling anyway, they can be used as a way to collect data, eventually potentially across the nation. “The purpose of this pilot is to leverage the Postal Service’s unique ability to collect this valuable data due to the scale and frequency with which our fleet of postal vehicles travel the streets of every community across the country,” the letter, posted by NALC Branch 238 to Facebook, reads. The letter, written by the United States Postal Service (USPS) Labor Relations to Brian Renfroe, the president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, says the USPS will partner with Next Base, a dashcam company, for the pilot. At the moment, the cameras will be used in the Washington, DC area, and will be installed on a hundred vehicles, the letter says."Community Safety" -- riiiiiiiiiigggghhhhhht ----- Buc-ee's is kinda asshoe when it comes to trademarks and logos Buc-ee’s and Ohio gas station chain settle trademark infringement lawsuit ![]() Texas-based travel center Buc-ee’s and Ohio gas station chain Mickey’s have settled a trademark infringement lawsuit over the companies’ cartoon animal logos. On Sept. 15, Buc-ee’s and Coles IP Holdings, the parent company of Mickey’s, reached a confidential agreement during a settlement conference, according to court records. The settlement stems from a lawsuit Buc-ee’s filed in February, claiming Mickey’s cartoon moose logo is too similar to its own cartoon beaver logo. *** The filing said that like Buc-ee’s logo, Mickey’s logo incorporates “a cartoon animal facing right with wide eyes and a smile, overlaying a round background.” It argued that the similarities between the two logos would likely cause confusion among customers. What am I missing? What could possibly be confusing about the differences in those 2 logos? ----- Wholesome content

----- Lake Powell water level is getting lower than usual Why Lake Powell Keeps Dropping Through The Fall Lake Powell rises for about ten weeks a year and falls for the other forty-two. The Rocky Mountain snowpack melts from roughly April into July, the reservoir climbs, and then the melt stops while Glen Canyon Dam carries on releasing water downstream at a rate the river cannot replace. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains why every autumn brings another run of headlines about falling water. In 2026 the pattern was unusually stark. The lake peaked on June 1, and by September 15 it had set a modern record low of 3,516.62 feet, the lowest since the reservoir first filled in the 1960s. It is still going down. What Happens If Flaming Gorge Is Drained To Save Lake Powell To keep Lake Powell from collapsing, water managers have been quietly draining another giant reservoir upstream, one most Americans have never heard of: Flaming Gorge. It is a bold, and increasingly desperate, move to buy the shrinking Colorado River system a little more time. As of 2026, the latest release is the biggest one yet, and it comes with a very real cost. Here is what actually happens when you drain Flaming Gorge to save Lake Powell. Both of these articles seem to be "just the facts" style. No mention of the climate bogeyman that I could find. Refreshing. Tonight's ONT brought to you by etichal questions ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Looks like leap seconds are going to be eliminated. The CGPM, General Conference on Weights and Measures thing month is likely going to vote to eliminate them in May 2027. The possibility of a negative leap second due to the earth's little rotation speed up starting in 2020, which likely would've crashed the internet scared them enough to do this. The earth's little speed up has abated looks like, so we wouldn't have needed one, but it scared them enough to do this. So, UTC will then just run free, ticking at atomic rate. Otherwise, they've just kicked the can down the road on a replacement scheme. They've raised the tolerance of the difference between UT1 (precise mean solar time) and UTC to one hour. It will take at least 500 years before that difference gets anywhere close to that, maybe 20 minute tops in 500 years. Palm Springs has its own aquifer so historically they didn't need to drink the rivers. (Steve Sailer, of all people, wrote about this a decade or two ago.) I think my 95yr old mother has decided she's tired of living. Acting different. Nothing is wrong with her other than some aches in her legs/back, which she's treated for. She's led a blessed life and despite burying one son she remained happy and content til now.
When you outlive your family and peers I guess it is time. She's got round the clock sitters and my brother lives nearby. Something changed in the past couple of weeks. I'm sort of sick to my stomach with dread of what's ahead, but will be happy for her as she knows where she's going. I will probably have an ulcer soon to distract me. USPS To Put Cameras in Trucks That Scan Roads for ‘Community Safety’ ____________________________________ How this would play in a private corporation: "Hey, boss. We're playing around with the idea of putting cameras in all out delivery vehicles to help keep the community safe." "That's great. You have a good heart. WE, HOWEVER, do not have the funds for that. We had a net loss of $9 Billion last year. So, I want you to think about where we can make cuts." "But, boss." "Cuts, Howard....cuts. And, lets start with the fancy paintwork on all out vehicles. We have over 200,000 vehicles, and we pay for that red white and blue striping with the eagle's head. That costs us. Going forward, every post office gets a stencil and some black paint. Burger King uses a different name in Australia (Hungry Jack's). Different name, and a logo with similarities. Panera Bread also has locations called St. Louis Bread Co. There are logo similarities. This is rape, or what I thought of it. This female waited 2yrs (I think) before claiming rape, after consensual sex with three frat boys. For drugs. This is prostitution in my book. She was drugged and then another group came in (from what I read). She took more ketamine to deal with the second group. It is possible to have a flat (zero intrinsic curvature at every point) torus. But a smooth embedding requires 4 dimensions. There's no way to curve a 2D surface into a torus in only 3 ambient dimensions. However, if you relax the smoothness, you get this fractal flat torus in 3D: https://t.ly/Qi3SA That surface is "smooth" up to one derivate. It has tangent planes. However, it blows up at the second derivative level. My parents outlived their friends, even though my dad took up mountain running at the ripe old age of 70 and had groupies in the running community that were younger than I am. Both mom and dad had memory issues, particularly after dad's stroke, and once they gave up the running life and didn't have anyone to play cards with, I think it became clear they weren't particularly interested in much. Dad still did crossword puzzles, mom still played solitaire, they like having dinner out and all that, but, at some point, they were done. Didn't help that dad was killed by the that damned clot shot. Mom lasted three years after that, but she couldn't entirely remember that dad was gone, so who knows? She was the memory care busybody which kept her in the mix, but eventually even that gave out. Dad was 91, Mom was 94. That's a good run for anyone. John Nash ("beautiful mind") and another mathematician named Kuiper (not related the astronomer after which the Kuiper Belt is named) proved that such a 3D embedding of the flat torus existed in the '50s, but had no idea what it would look like. Then some other work in the '70s "convex integration" laid the framework for finding it. And it wasn't until 2012 that the crazy infinitely corrugated torus was discovered and visualized. I understand when you say at some point, people are just done. My father in law, a great guy, lived til age 94, but over the last couple of years he told most of his visitors that he was ready to go now. He said he liked his children and their families, but it still didn’t make up for knowing that all his own brothers and sisters, and his wife, and his friends throughout life, and his business partners, and that just about everyone he’d known was now gone.
He said he felt like the last survivor out of his group, and he never wanted to be the lone survivor. So we mourned his death when it came, but also knew that he was ready for it and at peace, Posted by: Tom Servo at October 02, 2026 12:37 AM (slH4t) Posted by: tcn in AK at October 02, 2026 12:41 AM (GYqb1) 313

Well, my mind has unblown and reassembled itself. The normal vector, as we think it does exist. The tangent plane is a plane, and it must have a normal in 3D space. The "normal doesn't exist" was a misstatement in some description I was reading. What fails is any notion of derivatives of those normals and tangent vectors.
