349 For the first time, AI is starting to scare me. This new music video is out; about AI, created by AI. No humans involved. It’s too damned good. Not only is the music good, mixing genres (classical and rap) but it makes high level intellectual references in every frame, not to mention the literary games it plays. Such as using the refrain “Thus Spoke Compute” and then casually mentioning Zarathustra. Hindsight. Posted by: Ben Had at October 01, 2026 04:53 AM (10NPz) I suppose some colleges, government, and big corporations might have paid for search. Everybody else would've laughed at the idea, because other than Amazon, and other stores, and porn there wasn't much on the internet that you had to pay for. My biggest problem with Google showing ads wasn't really the ads but that Google turned AdSense into a monopoly very quickly - and then started using that power to censor the internet by denying disfavored "far-right" bloggers ad revenue. Oh yes, and they would pay LARGE in certain sectors. For example, there was the ability to connect to the National Library of Medicine's databases (Medline, Toxline + others) to search and retrieve abstracts of medical articles across the world. https://tinyurl.com/yr3fkspm They charged dollars-per-minute to access this in the 1980's. The Statler Bros. produced some of the best country music ever. "Flowers" is particularly dry in its wit, but I also love "The Movies" with its clever lyrics and "The Class of '57 Had Its Dreams," with a recounting of the singer's high school classmates and their subsequent lives. Anyway! I dreamed I was in a gun shop and asked to see a Sig-Sauer, since Hannity mentions them all the time. The clerk took out a box and apparently had to assemble the gun from scratch. I said, "Before you go to that trouble, can you give me some idea how the gun would fit my hand?" He handed me a block of wood that looked like no handgun butt in history and which naturally was too big for my hand. I told him, "Never mind." (Hey, it was a dream.)

When I started a new company in 2003 I setup a web site and signed up for Adsense. It only took a few days for me to find out that it you wanted to be in the top listings you had to pay. The search was based more on how much you as an advertiser paid rather than how relative to what was being searched for.
I dumped Adsense quickly and have been content with my site coming up three or four pages down. It's a disservice to people who really need me though, because they are led on a bunch of wild goose chases before, and if, they find me. Posted by: fd at October 01, 2026 06:34 AM (MWfyi) 90

It’s not “gathering flowers” it’s counting.
“ Countin' flowers on the wall That don't bother me at all Playin' solitaire 'til dawn with a deck of 51 Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo Now don't tell me, I've nothin' to do” He’s sitting in a room with cheap floral wallpaper awake all night long thinking about how he got dumped and trying to put on a brave face. Did somebody sabotage the Pike execution? Watered down the Phenobarbital? Would you be surprised?

John Ternus, the new Apple CEO, plans to make the company leaner and release products quicker. To celebrate this milestone he's already laid off a bunch of people and has ratcheted up the pressure on the rest. It's a matter of time before they put up the suicide nets at Apple HQ.

Posted by: fd at October 01, 2026 06:41 AM (MWfyi) She requested, and got, a team of female guards. Which, I guess, isn't usual, as she had to be transferred from a female prison to a male prison for the execution. When I read that I briefly wondered if the girls on the team helped a sister out. A beef & bean burrito with cheese and chili powder, an English muffin with peanut butter & honey, and now my Cafe Bruoso coffee, along with my pipe: a good way to start a day.
Cafe Bruoso (Italian name?) is the new espresso blend Aldi carries now instead of Cafe El Morro. The price is the same, $3.65/8.8 oz., so a little less than $7 for a pound. Pretty good when Community Coffee and other big names run $12 for 12 oz.. Horrifying for somebody who remembers the late '80s, when you could buy 12 oz. of RT brand coffee-with-chicory at the grocery for about $2.50. Just about every thing else is on a two to three year release schedule as far as I can tell. How much can he speed that process up without starting to screw up something somewhere? Can't find "bruoso" in my Spanish dictionary, and online only gives "brioso" (with an I) in Italian as "lively, vivacious, cheerful."
Online, "brioso" in Spanish is "spirited, determined, elegant." Maybe "Bruoso" is a corruption of it, from a family name. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 01, 2026 06:49 AM (wzUl9) 102
Did somebody sabotage the Pike execution? Watered down the Phenobarbital? Would you be surprised?
Posted by: fd She received two lethal doses of phenobarbital and all that accomplished was to take her snore so loud they could hear in the witness room. I read somewhere earlier this evening that the phenobarbital was old and may have been a lesser strength. Our legal and penal systems are just not serious about capital punishment; she's been sitting on death row for 30 years. If the law meant what it says she would have been hung 25 years ago. Or given a slaughter house bolt through the forehead. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram - My president has convictions. at October 01, 2026 06:50 AM (VyD10) 103
82 21 Recently, Google completely failed me when I tried to find the classic Ace roast of Chris Hayes, advising him to get a hotdog cart. I ended up using Microsoft Bing to find it, and now I have it bookmarked in case Bing croaks too:
