No different than lecturing laid off coal miners to "learn to code." Think of all the American med students who didn't get a residency placement vs. the 80 foreigners who took the 82 spots at Rochester hospital (which is the trend, not an anomaly) - should they bootstrap a residency, become an HVAC tech, or "learn to code?" Don't compete at who had it worse, there is always someone who had it worse, and wear it better. The joke of the Four Yorkshiremen is not that they suffered in poverty as children, it is that they think it is some sort of proof of superiority and are competing over it. Here are the facts. For most of us, life is just going to suck. It'll be hard work for little gain. You'll be on a hamster wheel for most if not all of your prime years. You will be exploited, betrayed, and burned over and over. People will walk off with your work, time and assets, then laugh at you for being such a sucker. Then in the end you die and go to hell. So in summary, fuck it, who cares.

You don't realize how big they are until you can practically walk right up to one, which is what we did. The funny thing is that the owl just gave us a cursory glance than looked away. I never thought of an owl as an apex predator, but that's exactly the attitude. In his world he was an apex predator. He patiently waited until we walked into our house then flew away. Incidentally, that summer most of the rabbits and squirrels in our neighborhood disappeared. Posted by: naturalfake at September 30, 2026 08:25 PM (YSUhf) 107

If you force them to go through them without warning, to preserve equity or whatever, you just have to wait for the poor souls to pick themselves and figure out what just happened, like you did.
