Newsom signs ‘ghost ticket’ ban but says its carve-outs need more work

California is taking action against the sale of “ghost tickets.”
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday signed Assembly Bill 1349, bipartisan legislation that targets the live-event ticket resale market. “Ghost tickets,” also known as speculative tickets, are concert and sports tickets that resellers list before they actually have them. The new law bars sellers from advertising, listing or selling tickets they don’t possess or have the legal right to receive, unless the event’s presenter or venue allows it. It’s intended to address persistent complaints from consumers about the practice.
“Buying a ticket shouldn’t come with hidden risks or unfair practices,” Newsom said on X.
The law prohibits using software to get around ticket limits, queue and presale restrictions. It restricts websites and ads designed to make resellers look like authorized ticket sources. Sellers in violation could face misdemeanor charges and penalties.

“While there may be good reasons for exempting certain sellers from the bill’s provisions, such a carve-out deserves further discussion,” Newsom wrote.
Newsom didn’t say which sellers he meant. His concerns allude to amendments made in the final days of the legislative session. Critics say those changes in effect exempt StubHub, one of the biggest ticket resale platforms, from the new rules.

Ask the question "what the worst way this can be abused?" The logical answer likely means money in the hands of Newsom and other nefarious politicians.

I read this multiple times and I'm still not fully understanding it!

A 24-foot tunnel borer chewed 2.7 miles under Lake Mead against water pressure of up to 218 psi, with a car tire carrying 33, to plant a drinking straw near the lake bottom, and the lake just hit its lowest level since Hoover Dam first filled it

Lake Mead hit another record low this month, which barely counts as news anymore. The lake has spent most of 2026 sliding past the marks set during the 2022 water crisis, and by September 22 it was down to 1,038.14 feet above sea level, the lowest it’s been since Hoover Dam first filled it in the 1930s.
So here’s the question I keep coming back to: Las Vegas pulls 90 percent of its water from that shrinking lake, so why does a metro area of more than two million people still have water coming out of every tap, fountain and misting system in town? A big part of the answer is a machine that finished its job over a decade ago, working under more water pressure than any tunnel boring machine had handled before, at least according to the company that built it.
Back in 2008, the Southern Nevada Water Authority started building a third drinking water intake for Lake Mead. The two existing straws sit at 1,050 and 1,000 feet above sea level, and the lake kept dropping toward both, so the new one had to pull from near the bottom. Getting a pipe down there meant boring a tunnel underneath the lake itself, through ground soaked with the lake’s own water.
The job went to Vegas Tunnel Constructors, a joint venture of S.A. Healy out of Chicago and Salini Impregilo out of Milan, and to a machine Herrenknecht built specifically for it: the S-502, a tunnel borer the water authority describes as 24 feet in diameter. It went into the ground in late 2011 through a 590-foot launch shaft at the lakeshore, roughly the height of a 50-story building, straight down. From the bottom of that hole it chewed 2.7 miles through rock toward one precise spot on the lake bed, and on December 10, 2014, it broke through.

At the far end, the bore had to dock with an intake structure resting on the bottom of the lake. Crews blasted a shaft out of the lake bed with shaped charges, lowered a concrete-and-steel intake of more than 1,300 short tons (1,200 metric tons) into it, and anchored the whole thing with more than 1,000 truckloads of concrete, per the water authority.
Then the machine had to hit that target after 2.7 miles underground, which is arguably the harder trick. Breaking through into a lakebed with the water still sitting on top is its own special category of nervous; a much smaller machine pulled a similar stunt under a California reservoir this year, and that one only had 347 feet to cover.
Water started moving through Intake No. 3 to the valley’s treatment plants in September 2015. The whole design goal was elevation: the new straw keeps drawing with the lake below 1,000 feet, a line the older intakes were never built to survive.

Rod Stewart has announced he will be retiring from touring after more than six decades.
The legendary singer-songwriter, 81, announced The Final Encore Tour Monday morning, just weeks after canceling portions of his U.S. "One Last Time" farewell tour following a coronary stent procedure.
“Ladies and gentlemen, after much deliberation and sadness, I have to announce next year will be my last tour ever, ever, ever. I’m not retiring, but this will be the last rock and roll tour,” Stewart said in a social media post.

Stewart rose to prominence in the late 1960s with the Jeff Beck Group and the Faces.
His solo breakthrough came with the 1971 album “Every Picture Tells a Story,” featuring “Maggie May.”

There are several rivers with that name...one that starts in Me-Hi-Co and ends up in the Salton Sea is around 1907 after the Colorado River was finally diverted back to it's banks. It's one of the dirtiest (if not THE dirtiest) rivers in the United States...radiological, chemical, biological waste...it's got it all. And fish STILL live in the river.

There's a recent Neil Peart documentary that aired on Canadian TV. Several drummers performed various Rush songs with Geddy and Alex. Copeland joined them for New World Man. He looked like he might pass out!

If your town has one bridge over the river, it doesn't need a name. It's just the bridge.

When you build another, they're "The Old Bridge" and "The New Bridge."

When you build a third, and a fourth, etc., you probably name them. "The Dental Bridge," "The Wheatstone Bridge." And maybe eventually you give a name to the first two bridges.

But the locals still call the second-oldest bridge in town "The New Bridge."

Clarity of sound in a good headset, high quality connection cable and socket, plugged into a reel-to-reel setup with a vacuumed tube amplifier....

But first listen to some 1968 era Credence. On a reel to reel tape system described as above.

Yes. It's good practice to vacuum out your tube amplifiers. And radios. Otherwise dust bunnies can accumulate, which might catch fire when the audions get hot.

It wasn't striped yet, but I once had a fun encounter with fresh asphalt.

Family reunion (my mom's side) in Copper Mountain, Colorado. My one uncle was a runner and bicyclist. So, my mom and I and he rented some bicycles and rode down the mountain to a supermarket. Getting kinda close, there was a stretch of the road with cones out and we scooted over into it to stay out of the way of cars. I was in the rear, and started seeing this stuff fly up onto my mom's back. And my uncle's. It was not-quite-ready-to-drive-upon fresh asphalt. That stuff will NOT come out of most clothes. And it doesn't like to come out of hair very easily, either. (Fortunately we were wearing helmets.)

And then we had to ride home - uphill.

Absolutely. About once a year I have guitar amp vacuuming day. I pull the chassis out of all the amps and blow them out with compressed air. Every couple months I'll pull the back grills of the amps I use and hit them with a small swiffer to get the dust off the tubes and chassis tops. Dust cooking on tubes is nasty.

Just finished watching The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer from 1947, with Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, and Shirley Temple, age 18. Hilarious farce, with one of the finest last scenes I've run across in movies. I laughed out loud and applauded.

It was written by Sidney Sheldon, of I Dream of Jeannie fame and those bestselling potboilers of the 1970s. He certainly knew how to tell a joke, and to make it work more than once in the right places.

My first missile battery was 100% analog, vacume tubes everywhere. And yes compressed air to clean everything out was a weekly maintenance chore.

I got introduced to the reel-to-reel tube based system by the senior warrant officer that eventually recommended me to that rank. Damned good tech for audio. Good for nuking Commie Soviets too.

Fuck me! So good! Looked great, but it's a problem I've noticed with high def restorations. It's like you can see the seams of a movie. The goofy looking sets and all that. It takes you out of the film a bit. Regardless, excellent movie. And some nice tits. Oooohhhh yeeeeaaaaahhhhh.....

Starship could've easily made orbit from the get-go. They're just taking an abundance of caution approach (unlike the Chicoms, who don't give a shit).

Starship is so big and massive that if something went south and they lost control of it, they'd have a big hunk of dead metal in LEO, one huge chunk of space junk. And it's big enough that large pieces would survive reentry and if it came down over a populated area, it would be a mess.

Isn't power provided by a radioactive decay thermal battery? One that makes power at a decaying rate? Or does that unit charge normal chemical batteries, and it's the recharge rate that is falling off, making conservation necessary?

Yep, Voyager 1 will probably go dead first, based on the power reserve data.

They've gone to heroic efforts to keep them going as long as they had. They did some risky trick a few months ago with Voyager 2, which worked. They're doing something similar with Voyager 1, but that's not yet complete.

It's just mind-boggling when you think about, considering the round trip signal time.

RTG. Radioisotope Thermal Generator. It's basically a thermocouple in reverse, the Seebeck effect, heat from decay of Pu-238 --> electrical energy.

These are ideal for deep space missions where solar power is too weak.

Those units lose power output at about 4W per year.

There was a supply problem with Pu-238 for a while, but they've successfully restarted production. The current Mars rovers use RTGs. You don't have to worry about dust on the solar panels, and then night and winter problems.
