More than two centuries ago, a teenage boy watched a sperm whale sink his ship. Now, the theory that grew out of that disaster has been confirmed as accurate.
On Nov. 20, 1820, 15-year-old Thomas Nickerson was aboard the whaleship Essex, a specialized vessel designed for hunting and processing whales, when a massive sperm whale sped toward the vessel and struck it head-on. According to BBC Future, the whale swam roughly 900 feet away, turned and charged again, striking the bow. The Essex sank, stranding 20 men some 1,300 miles from land in what became one of the most infamous survival ordeals in maritime history and the inspiration for Herman Melville's Moby Dick.
Now, 175 years after the novel's publication, researchers have confirmed how a sperm whale can take down a ship several times its size. The answer, it turns out, was predicted by Owen Chase, the Essex's first mate, who argued that the whale's enormous forehead was a weapon.
"This wasn't originally our hypothesis; it was Owen Chase's," retired evolutionary biologist Dave Carrier told the outlet. "An 18th-Century whaler argued that the forehead was a weapon, and we set out to test that." For two centuries, Carrier said, biologists had largely dismissed the whaler's account, but "the whaler's intuition and experience were probably correct."

Sea otters are awesome critters. They are good moms, they take care of the kelp forest, and the eat a shit ton of sea urchins, which otherwise would destroy the kelp and trash the environment.

Plus they are cute as heck, and very trainable.

When the boy was young, I took him to the Sealife Center in Seward where they were rehabbing a sea otter pup for release in the wild. He got to feed it and help teach it some hand signals. Both the otter and the boy were stinkin' cute.

Now I wonder if the otter wasn't the smarter of the two.

Mrs. Lloyd gets her chemo on Saturday, meaning Sunday is rough. I am taking Mondays off so that I can somewhat recover, but also catch up on things, so I must have missed it. Mrs. Lloyd is experiencing some abdominal swelling so more appointments and scanning later this week.

They also gave her steroids. She uses the "medible" marijuana (which works great!) so now she's literally doing pot on steroids.

It can be daunting. Getting the port put in, and then having to do the infusions is a bit of work. The first week wasn't bad, and right now they're trying to see if she's reacting to it or something else is going on.

I have to say that she's been binging on supplements and that could be the culprit. We'll just have to run it to ground.

The big thing is that once that chemo is in them, they will sweat it out, which I why I have a separate "infusion day" bed because I got sick just from being in the same bed on the first week. This week, I avoided it.

It was awful. Stuck in the den watching football on Saturday night. The horror.
