In 2027, Trump's Department of Education Will Begin Limiting Government Loans for "Students" In No-Hope Majors

I voted for this.

Sounds good, but it's a very limited first step.

The new rule will mostly go after for-profit private "schools" teaching skills like cosmetology. Supposedly non-profit colleges and universities, where the bulk of educational fraud occurs, will mostly be untouched.

But one can hope.

If your degree doesn't pay enough, you can't borrow. Federal loans cut for low-wage programs

College students pursuing majors, advanced degrees or certifications in fields that consistently earn low incomes will no longer be able to take out federal loans to pay for their schooling under new Trump administration rules.

Many of the degree programs that educate social workers, artists, teacher aides and especially certification programs for barbers and nail technicians are likely to fail a new federal litmus test: Will they make more money upon graduation than if they never enrolled in the first place?

I can't believe this is even controversial.

The new federal rule, finalized this month by the Education Department, comes amid a national crisis in student loan defaults -- and is part of a larger effort to ensure a college degree or professional certification serves as an avenue for economic advancement rather than a debt trap.

It has also provoked debate over whether the mission of higher education -- and help paying for it -- should be tied to a paycheck after graduation.

But unlike other aspects of the administration's education actions, the new policy has relatively broad support, with some student advocates saying it should be tougher.

The Education Department hasn't yet calculated the final data against which institutions will be judged, leaving uncertainty on exactly what programs will face consequences.

The vast majority of bachelor's and advanced degree programs at public and nonprofit colleges and universities are expected to be safe, with about 3% expected to fail, according to the department's estimates.

Those are rookie numbers. We need to get that up to 50%.

But maybe this is the "foot in the door" to achieve a more sane policy.

However, about 33% of programs at for-profit schools are expected to fail.

Overall, 4.2% of students who receive federal loans or grants are enrolled in programs expected to fail the new benchmark, according to the Education Department. An estimated 5.2% of programs overall may fail, but not all students take out federal loans.

"For the first time in a very long time ... institutions and college leaders are going to be held accountable," said Michael Itzkowitz, president of the education research organization HEA Group. "They are going to start looking and paying more attention to economic outcomes than they ever have before."

We need to greatly expand the rule to cover the Fake Majors at "real" colleges.

These students will never be able to pay their loans back, because the "fields" they're "studying" have no economic use and therefore they will get a degree to become a low-paid barista. Then the taxpayer will have to absorb the loss of the never-repaid loan.

They write it off, Jerry. They just write it off.

Another benefit is that many of these "majors" are actually just training to become bitter revolutionaries. Many "subjects" taught in college now are just Marxist agitation towards chaos and tumult. Far from being a benefit to society, these fields train "students" to undermine and attack society.

And these Fake Majors contribute to the growing problem of what is called "the overproduction of elites," though I reject the word "elites" here. Scholars have noted that societies become unstable and violent when universities produce too many "elites" -- I would call them "aspirants to the elite," because they're failed would-be elites, not actual elites. People get degrees with the belief that they're tickets to an upper-class lifestyle and find out that they're not qualified for any job with an upper-class salary, or even a middle-class salary. They become savagely bitter and attack society itself, animated not only by the ideological tenets of Marxism but overpowering rage at a system that has "failed" them.

Maybe it was designed to do just this. The system is rigged to produce millions of useless-but-entitled, bitter, angry Democrat Socialists.

Medical schools strictly limit how many students are allowed into an actually necessary field which really is a ticket to the upper levels of the upper class. Medical schools make sure there is no overproduction of doctors. (Though many believe that they have become an unreasonably restrictive cartel, under-producing doctors to make sure that every doctor, no matter how unskilled, becomes wealthy.)

If medical schools do this, why don't colleges also limit how many students enroll in African America Experiences In Media? Why do they not try to limit how many very-important Feminist Critiques of Macho Culture in Gay Communities "scholars" are produced?

Since they won't limit the number of "elites" going into these fields, the government will just have to limit how much public money is loaned out to students in these no-hope, Barista Prep fields.

7 However, about 33% of programs at for-profit schools are expected to fail.

If 1/3 of your curriculum is predicated on students not being able to get decent jobs after giving you hundreds of thousands of dollars, you're not running a school. You're running a predatory lending establishment backed by the 'full faith and credit' of the Government and should get crushed out of the market.

They're not going into these fields with the expectation that someone other than government, an NGO, or a university will pay them, they're going into them for the cachet of an advanced degree. They go in to them because despite the fact that they don't really know what else to do, they're convinced they're uniquely suited to running the lives of the rest of us.

You're welcome to go that route, but don't ask me to pay for it.

I got a stipend in grad school, because my skills were saleable and they wanted people to still sign up for lots more schooling. Nobody needs a grad student in the fields being chopped. If they did, those grad students wouldn't need loans.

Of course.
But states seem to have been taking the position that illegals can not be denied the right to drive because it is necessary to participate in the economy, and that ties to basic human rights.
If it is justification for illegals then same for citizens. I am not looking under penumbras here, but I think we have treated driving as something the gov. can have full control of. That can be pushed back on - we have a lot of amendments that can apply here - assembly, search, religion, speech,... they all need people to participate in the economy and that should preclude unreasonable restrictions or searches while doing so.

In particular, the 1960s and 70s riots were all filthy commies and antifa types, and that was well before the student loan scam.

There will always be an underclass of layabout agitators and perverted creeps willing to take their self-hate out on the rest of the world. I don't think student loan debt has anything to do with it.

68 This bothers me at one level, because colleges and universities are not glorified trade schools. They are not an expensive way to get a job. They are supposed to teach people to be better citizens and better leaders for the future.

Says who? For most people at a university, that's precisely why they're there.

77 As for medical schools - the issue is training slots, there just aren't that many more available. The H1B example is bringing in inferior medical professionals because there aren't anymore.

Most med students, for the time and expense and the school loans cost, are not going into primary care either. They want a specialty profession that will allow them to pay back their loans and get a payback for the time in training. Remember, there is 4 years of medical school and then 4 years at least in residency. Residency jobs are almost all in expensive COLA areas paying a starting wage that is less than that of a good engineering school graduate. If you go for a fellowship on top of that it is another 2 to 3 years of lower wages. You can be almost 35 before you see serious paychecks.

Liberal arts degrees make well-rounded citizens which is the backbone of a functioning democracy. A policy like this is just another attempt to turn America into Communist China. The correct policy would be for the state to invest in all education to prevent student-loan debt. Go a step further and also invest in trade schools to be free also and to even give free work trucks to tradesmen and free farm equipment to farmers. These are things government should be focused on instead of mass surveillance and war.

The vast majority of idiots who can't pay back their student loans are still on the hook, and a default hits their credit report. They are fucked and I like it.

It may well be that they never pay this money back, and the taxpayers are on the hook for it eventually. But it's a drop in the bucket compared to the 100s of trillions that taxpayers are already on the hook for.

No. H1B visas require a position to demand at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a specialized field. Electrician jobs are vocational, so an electrician can't hire foreign workers through a H1B program.

Maybe he could do an EB3 visa, but that requires a permanent job offer and cert through the Dept of Labor.

174 There are some indirect benefits to this. I used to have to compete with my friends and peers to secure employment over the summer at some of the choice "fun" jobs in order to stuff money away for college. Now, teenagers don't work (or plan ahead) as much. Those positions custom built for young, inexperienced kids have been gobbled up by illegals. I'm talking about waiting tables, assisting tradesmen, working counters etc. That doesn't even include the hard manual labor slots (that I personally believe every teenager should experience before making long lasting vocational choices). Even if the lesson is "I don't want to do this shit for the rest of my life"...you've learned something.

Student loans aren't, IMO, to give opportunities to the individual. They should be to benefit the community and the economy as a whole. Instead the focus is on assisting the individual (who just happens to be too unmotivated to create their own opportunities).

No more degrees in Lesbian Cookie Making. There is little benefit going forward to anyone.

180 Ultimately the problem is credentialism. "You must be certified/licensed/have Z-level degree/etc, no matter how much experience and know-how you have". That's a problem caused by: states insisting on credentials/licensing (so they can scoop fees, probably), Griggs vs Duke Power (flipped the recruitment mindset to 'experience *might* be acceptable in lieu of degree... but might not' instead of the fairly-reasonable 'degree *might substitute for lack of experience'), and businesses that don't want to 'waste' time/money training new hires. And probably some things that I forgot.

Until that's fixed, at every level it's possible to do so, colleges and universities aren't for 'becoming a better citizen and leader', although that's still their marketing pitch.

They can't give you their own test. They can't give you a published IQ test. They can ask if you have a HS diploma or a GED, but neither of those means anything anymore.

And we're already to the point where a 4-year sheepskin doesn't mean anything unless its in a STEM field, so I don't know where companies go next. Require a Masters degree to be a grocery clerk?

199 Medical schools strictly limit how many students are allowed into an actually necessary field which really is a ticket to the upper levels of the upper class. Medical schools make sure there is no overproduction of doctors. (Though many believe that they have become an unreasonably restrictive cartel, under-producing doctors to make sure that every doctor, no matter how unskilled, becomes wealthy.)
_________

I'm not sure medical schools limit enrollment for altruistic reasons. I think enrollment is limited because there are only so many people who want to and can endure medical school.

You can open up 500 more medical schools, and I don't think enrollment would be much higher.

Similar to law school, although medical school is much harder.

The biggest problem facing the medical industry isn't too many graduates of American med schools. It's too many foreigners crowding into the space. Go to almost any hospital in the country, and you'll wonder whether you're still in America.

She argued her approach would be physically easier, because they are still young and fit, cut way down on child-care expenses, and ultimately might help their careers (not hinder), because employers would know they weren't going to stop working to raise kids just when they become valuable employees.

The idea that a college degree should lead to a "wage", an hourly-paid job, is wrong from the get-go. You get a degree to earn a job with a salary, or to became a consultant, paid on contract. There nothing wrong with a good hourly-paid job, and one should not need a "degree" to get one. Certificate from a vocational school, plus apprenticeship is the way to go.

Yep. The master gets cheap labor for a time and the apprentice learns the job. No need for an intermediate institution aimed at separating dollars from students directly.

Really, the same goes for law as well as some other professional degree fields.

The proliferation of shitty graduate degrees is because of Griggs and the societal rejection of the old tried and true methods of developing professionals on the cheap.

Associate Justice Robert Jackson comes to mind as one of the great Scotus judges and he never went to law school, he apprenticed which was allowed at the turn of the 20th century.

277 Why should everyone else subsidize women to pursue a degree that they'll only use part time?

Again, who subsidized her? She was paid for hours worked, like any employee.

Why should we keep men out of degree programs to provide seats for women who won't use the degree?

Who said anything about keeping men out of degree programs. She was where she was because she was better than they were.

Why should men be either deprived of a job so that a woman can be hired part time, or expected to pick up the slack of women being hired part time, so that she can have a job part time?

You keep using words like "deprived". She wasn't hired with the expectation of being part-time, but when the situation arose, they thought enough of her to adapt. That's generally the mark of a smart outfit. Nobody "picked up" her hours.

Finally, as I've already said, if you think the fertility crisis really is existential, and I do, then it makes sense to make accommodations, or you'll end up like Korea or China.

One of the big problems with govt-funded/approved student loans is that a sizeable part of the student body uses loan money as subsidies for Party Time.

Plus, when they get their BA degree and can't find work, they continue the vicious cycle with post-grad borrowing for multiple Masters or Doctorate degrees, and they live on the loans and the pittance they get for being a TA, while spending most of their time smoking weed and pontificating at the local coffee shop on the evils of capitalism.

If an individual gets a student loan in a non-productive, personal economic growth field and cannot make a living, to bad for them. Pay the piper!
That said. Our government should not be in the business of providing student loans in the first place. It just creates the ability for graft. But those individuals who have the debt, pay up! Let's just watch the post high school education system implode back to providing useful education to those who seek it.
