Wednesday Night ONT - September 30, 2026 [TRex]

09302026-big-do-nut-drive-in-inglewoodCA.jpg

Good evening Horde! The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. The bar is open and fully stocked. Step up and place your order.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. It is the last day of September after all.

If you're a troll, go away.

This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

Remember blog etiquette - if you are the second commenter, you get the honor of alerting those in the prior post. If you are the first, you get to bask in the temporary glory of victory. If you are third, we still love you.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

ONT Sign of the Times

You would think one room would be sufficient to observe the ladies' room, but apparently many are needed.

***

ONT Department of Nostalgia

It is truly amazing what lurks out there on the interweb:

***

ONT Department of Alcohol Science

I had no idea that this kind of thing was a sub-genre on YouTube. Is this what happens when gas gets expensive? Apparently so. Warning: once you watch one video, your entire YouTube feed gets filled with similar videos. (I feel sorry for the YouTube or NSA employee tasked with tracking my YouTube algorithm.)

***

ONT Department of the Far Side

Everyone has probably seen this before, but I stumbled across it this week. I hadn't seen it for a while and it still made me laugh.

***

ONT Department of Public Art

The Basketball Tree, functional sculpture by Alexandre Arechea, located in Biidaasige Park in Toronto.

20261001-hoops.jpg

I'm sure there is some deeper meaning that only the truly insightful can fully appreciate, but I like seeing a bit of whimsy and interaction in public art. It would take a while to figure out which hoop to aim for, but the odds of sinking a basket would improve!

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Current Concept. The host does not give his real name, but is very handy and I love his dry sense of humor. His channel description is bang on accurate: "Engineering ish projects being made and tested. I'll even throw some jokes in there every now and then to keep em entertaining. This channel is my excuse to build dumb ideas that I've got."

Belt fed potato cannon? Done. Saw blade launcher? Done. Banana gun? Done. Robot knife thrower? Done. Rocket powered shoes? Done. You get the idea.

It is clever and a little crazy without being outright dumb or stupid clickbait.

The channel has over 205,000 subscribers. A few videos have gotten over a million views but most are in the tens or hundreds of thousands. Posting is about once a month(ish). I don't get the sense that this is a full time job.

I may have posted it on the blog before, but my favorite is the belt fed potato cannon video.

Old school Sammy Hagar for the big ONT finish:

Public service reminder: the left lane is for passing, not cruising. If you are driving in the left lane with a line of cars stacked behind you, you're doing it wrong. Sammy would agree. Pretty sure one is a flaming liberal and I hope she does not bring up politics or covid. The other is one of my roommates & I don't worry about her.

I'd like to know where one girl is I told to shut up during a break of State Boards. Which is not like me and I snapped like a lunatic from stress and diarrhea (low potassium). We were all freaking out about answers to one question and she said something stupid and I cracked. Would apologize.

At the time (Civil War Era) we had to take boards out of the city in a crappy old college lecture hall. Spend two nights in a hotel with three of my best friends (two are the lunch friends). We were seriously insane. Either stressing or laughing hysterically.

An old proctor fell down on the wood floors behind me with a thud during one test. We were told not to look up for any reason. 100 student nurses didn't look up. Friends later asked if I tripped her. Nope! She had those old oxford nun shoes and they slipped.

100 Thanks for the ONT. I do want to hang out with the Pittsburgh scanner person.

In the ED cops would arrive with the dregs of society and were pretty funny dudes. As were EMT's and ED docs and nurses. You have to be a bit insane to work in that environment, especially on weekends, full moons, or pick a day, any day. Sometimes horribly sad, so the insanity balanced it out other times.

The docs used to love to have me lose my cool by making me laugh inappropriately. To see if they could. I loved them all. There were always seven docs on at a time I had to deal with, plus PA's and ARNP's and the rest of the staff. If they every got me going I'd have to evacuate through the ambulance bay to laugh outside.

153 I was a mystery to the ED docs because I never hit on them, being married and a lady (plus two teen boys).

I knew one nurse who transferred from a medical floor to catch a doc to marry. It was obvious. She did, but not the one she wanted.

She wanted an Italian/American gorgeous dude. Who I admired altho they all were a decade younger. I was standing at the door of one room, looking at a man's monitors. He'd arrived in a full code after mixing Viagra with heart meds and coded during the act with his wife.

This doc comes over to me and said, "Well, it's a fine way to go, isn't it?" Which nearly did me in and I had to leave to the ambulance bay again. They knew what I was doing if I left that crazy madhouse.

We endured about two weeks of on top of "normal" ED noices a jackhammer making the trauma units bigger. That was fun taking calls: "Wut?" During one of those days the triage RN came to tell the docs of a woman who had chest pains because a frog bit her hemorrhoid. This caused unusual snorting/crying/laughing from me due to all the stress and noise.

One doc would always follow me outside. I guess to make sure I was not running away.

Stan Ulam once won a Tennis match with Enrico Fermi, 6–4.

Fermi, however, refused to concede. He pointed out that the difference between the two scores was less than the square root of the sum of the scores, 3.17.

This is a shorthand method used by statisticians to determine whether a result is significant or within the limits of measurement error.

Ulam found Fermi’s response at once ridiculous and adorable and continued to play tennis with his competitive friend.

Well, if you tune the engine to burn E85, it may have some reduction in power, but it will burn a lot more to get normal power levels. They used to run straight alcohol fuel in some racing classes. Very high octane rating, so they could run big compression.

The bad thing about alcohol is not that it's a bad fuel, but that we are being forced to use an alcohol blend for the spurious reason of "climate change".

165 I recall a similar place (big donut on top) in Hermosa or Manhattan Beach, not Inglewood.

Inglewood was home base for production of P-51s and B-25s during The Big One. There's still an airstrip alongside some warehouses along one of the state highways (90-something) running through the area, probably a remnant of that era.

As far as the eye could see during the war that whole area around LAX was warplane production (a lot of it under suspended camouflage fake "suburb" scenes). Nobody these days knows this, it's like it never happened. Even though much of the 24-hour operations of restaurants and other small businesses in LA have their origin in that era as well (3 shifts).

183 The bad thing about alcohol is not that it's a bad fuel, but that we are being forced to use an alcohol blend for the spurious reason of "climate change".

Its about raising octane levels in gasoline.

From the beginning 1920ish to 1970s in the US, Tetraethyl Lead proved to be an extremely effective octane booster, cheap and provided valve-seat protection. Problem is that is highly toxic, widespread lead contamination and broke catalytic converters. Not so much "Climate" but simple Smog and Pollution.

Aromatics like Benzene, Toluene and Xylene. Toluene, used in drag racing is highly effective octane booster but all (BTX/BTEX) are carcinogenic and expensive.

So along comes Oxygenates and MTBE until the 2000s, cheap, excellent octane boost, compatible with unleaded systems, but fuel leaks created contaminated groundwater and a little bit would wreck drinking water.

So we get Ethanol which is cheap, has high octane, "renewable", cleaner and doesn't wreck groundwater. Doesn't require bandwidth out of regular petrol refineries which is important since we are closing refineries and have no capacity headroom.

Posted by: Community Notes at September 30, 2026 11:07 PM (NzX/y)

184 we are being forced to use an alcohol blend for the spurious reason of "global warming"
——

No, oxygenate has been a federal requirement for many decades. Nothing to do with that. Long before global warming was even a gleam in AlGore’s eye.

Formerly MTBE was used for the oxygenate, but it contaminates ground water, very persistent. Alcohol is the replacement or substitute.

The real question though. Why oxygenated gasoline?

Near as I can figure, it (mostly) is a matter of “the solution to pollution is dilution”. I believe originally it may have been one of those CARB mandates.

He said it's like I become a werewolf. I told him I was raised in the SEC and college games since kindergarten. It's the way it is.

When FSU (where one son went, the other to UF) played Duke I became rabidly insane with son one game. We both got in trouble and once I came very close to being famous for killing Coach K as he went under the balcony and I was yelling at him til I was hoarse. The refs beat us by one point. Son and I were in trouble that night with his Dad and gf but it was totally worth it.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a frigate gap.

The Navy's 2026 shipbuilding plan plans a fleet of 66 frigates. By 2031, two Constellation-class frigates are to be completed at the Marinette, Wisc. shipyard and a modified U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter at the Ingalls, Miss. shipyard.

But to meet the Navy's goal, a sustained delivery of more than three frigates per year will be needed by 2037. ... and the plan all along was to have two frigate-producing shipyards.

And Hawthorne was another assembly facility that had its own airstrip. My mother-in-law worked there, and had an unbelievable story about a giant jet, that mistook that airstrip for LAX. Higher compression engines require higher octane to prevent detonation or "knock".
