Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the El Final-O of September-O Edition? I am making a quick road trip this weekend so may be in and out of the comments tonight. Y'all please don't burn the place down, 'kay?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Shooting low & left? Easy to fix! The answer? Don't do that.

They Mome'n down in Texas!

The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 16-17. This is the eleventh annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. A double-doozy even. A bigly double-doozy! If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute. I have said this probably two hundred and eighty-three times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. Call for ideas: I have been doing the same class on rifles Friday morning for years now. Are you getting tired of it yet? I would like to have the session be more of an open forum where your particular questions can be answered with a discussion by the group. I am perfectly willing to keep doing the same presentation, or parts of it, but think a roundtable forum would be interesting and informative. Please let me know what you think in the comments.

Volunteers: If you are interested in helping out, please send me a note (gunthread at protonmail dot com) on when you plan to arrive (day and approximate time). It is really critical to have this information for scheduling and to make certain we have the proper coverage to make the shooting portion safe and enjoyable for all concerned. Thank you in advance!

Here is an outline of the schedule of events. Times are tentative and subject to modification/change. This schedule will be included in the Gun Thread with any changes incorporated going forward until the event, so please check back weekly.

Shooters: Bring your own hearing and eye protection, and wear sensible shoes as the ground on the ranges can be uneven! Also, please plan on stopping somewhere along your way to Texas and picking up some ammunition if you plan to shoot and aren't bringing your own weapons/ammo. Everyone is very generous with sharing, but please don't rely on the generosity of others to provide everything for you. You can really help out by grabbing a box of 9mm or 5.56mm or whatever you want to shoot. Here is a link to Brinson Power Sports in Corsicana which sells ammo. They also sell ATV's if you want to grab one of those while you're there.

Anyhoo...

For a while I have been conducting a Rifle Clinic on Friday morning followed by range time Friday afternoon and then again well into Saturday. Most of you (I think) have endured this presentation before, so if there are other topics you would like to have covered, speak up in the comments and I will try to address your request.

We have also been steadily refining the handgun portion of the program and this year will be focusing on the static pistol range as well as continuing to offer a separate setup for gun-curious beginners desiring one-on-one supervision and instruction. If you are a novice shooter, or even have never been to the range before and think guns are icky, you are welcome to shoot! Just see an RSO and they will set you up with an experienced shooter to help you.

These times are approximate and programs may change as weather conditions and participation warrant. We anticipate a hard stop on both ranges at 1pm on Saturday to allow everyone to participate in the bigly fun TXMoMe festivities.

Range Safety
You will note there are combined rifle and handgun range safety briefings both days and attendance is mandatory if you want to shoot. We take your safety seriously and ask everyone who wants to shoot plan on attending this important briefing. Again, we are conducting one combined safety brief each day. No exceptions.

At the conclusion of each day's safety briefing you will be asked to sign a general liability waiver, after which you will receive a color-coded wrist band. The color is different each day, and it is your ticket onto the range(s) for the day. No wrist band, no shooting that day. Don't want to sign the waiver? No problem, just do not expect to shoot. If you miss the mandatory range safety briefing which is mandatory and must be attended, you are welcome to watch the live fire activities from designated observation areas.

All shooters are asked to check in with an RSO (sporting an Orange Cap of Dorkiness for easy identification) upon your arrival at either of the ranges who will answer questions and direct you to an open firing position. The RSOs wield unspeakable power so it is in your best interest to be nice to them. Want to do things your way? I suggest that your own personal range on your own personal property is a good place for expressing your individuality.

IMPORTANT: I would hope this goes without saying, but anyone failing to immediately and politely follow RSO instructions will be removed from the range(s). Period. No exceptions. This means YOU.

I will probably think of more things to yell about in the coming weeks so please stay tuned.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Fortunately, everyone was fine, thanks. My driver's side is FUBAR from the front to the rear, and my good friend's body shop will be getting some business. Frankly, I was amazed that the Albanian who caused the accident and was in a huge hurry not to involve the police had a license. Turns out he was driving someone else's Mercedes van. Probably an employer.

Should be dead on with little if any up or down correction. That is either an issue with grip, muscle memory if inconsistent, or firearm fit to hand. Right or left issues usually come from one hand doing to much or the other hand doing too little to steer it.

25 DMV MGC was much reduced today. sra blaster and myself an Ed L.

We got a lot of time to shoot today. We made sure to use the automated target machine to get some movement and different distances in.

sra blaster is getting her reps in on her Kimber CDS9. It's well broken in now an she is getting better with it.

I 6hot a troublesome Ruger P95. It requires a completely stiff arm or it will do bad things with ejecting. I haven't shot it in a while, I think this one does better with 124grain
rounds.

Ed L. brought a couple of snakes. A snubby Cobra from 1964 and a 6 inch barrel modern production. He shot better with the snubby.

I also shot my P320. I shoot it much better than my P226s and that pisses me off.

26 FWIW, I find the same thing with iron sighted rifles. If you practice it a lot, you can snap shoot with the sights directly on target from muscle memory. Again, stock fitting and proper mounting of the rifle helps.

For fun and practice, I have been shouldering each rifle that I have been fixing and pretty much if I can see the sights (Krag has an ultrathin blade that I had to paint orange), it is in proper place when I shoulder the rifle.

Optics mess that up a bit which is why I prefer shooting with irons even now. My pistols are like old friends and while my grip suffered from arthritis, so far, my eyes have been spared and my muscle memory is still there.

Out past two to three hundred yards on rifles is where I prefer to use optics because of issues like bullet drop and lead correction on moving targets.

Exactly, Ed. As annoying as the disruption is, everyone is fine, and therefore I'm just venting about stupid crap that could have been worse. I felt sorry for the poor kid who was in the middle of that crap sandwich, though. Her SUV had to be towed, and she was pretty shaken.

31 And all of my opinions apply to me but not necessarily to other people. It is simply what I have worked out over the years which works for me and my needs.

Same reason I use a crush grip as it stops any possibility at milking the trigger and promotes a more consistent, if not tip top accuracy, in combat shooting. I care little for target shooting. YMMV.

Range day here and had my HK 45 out of the safe. Hadn't shot it in a while and just forgot how much I appreciate the engineering that went into grip and ergonomics. Always enjoy shooting this one.

Been shooting static and turning targets at 15 and 21' plus static targets and 25'. Mostly shapes, but some silhouettes and 4" circles.

I'm 74 and not as steady as once upon a time, but I'm okay with the results I'm getting. Could use some new practice drills though ...

Wonder what other things folks do to sharpen their practical shooting skills.

Still spent a few minutes with each firearm - rack, practice grip, field strip, check condition...

It'll be a couple of weeks before I can hit the range...

When was the last time you changed recoil springs? Sometimes that can reproduce what you have mentioned. Slide sensitivity to position and ammo.

I probably shot the Python snubby better than the modern 6" one because I've had the snubby for nearly ten years and have practiced double action shooting with it for quite a while. The 6" barreled model is practically brand new. It's one of the new blued models that's had less than 100 rounds (at most) shot through it. Also, I exclusively shot .38 Special 130 grain FMJs today. .357s out of a snubby is just too much muzzle blast and flash to be practical.

We did drills using half sized IPSC targets. Blaster set up a drill with the target exposed for two seconds at 15, 10, 7, 5, and 3 yards. We had five shots to work with (or ten if you wanted to try double taps). I did pretty well with the snubby. My best group had 4 A-zone and 2 C-zone hits with a full cylinder of six.

I haven't changed the recoil spring on this one and that's probably a good idea. I actually have some replacements here somewhere.

I had that problem with a ruger LC9 years back. I had to replace the recoil spring and the guide rod. It was one of the polymer guide rods that was bending and failing. I got a new steel one along with a new spring and it functioned perfectly after that.

53 My shooting buddy won the Utah State midrange championship yesterday. He shot a 598 with 32 X's. Not bad for a 80 year old sling shooter!! I'm eating some of his Flaming Gorge trout tonight to see if that helps my shooting!! LOL

Try using half sized IPSC targets. I got mine from Amazon. What I like about them is that they're a lot easier to manage and use on an indoor range than full sized IPSC target. You can score yourself on each round of fire (9mm: A-zone hit - 5 points, C-zone hit =3 points, D - zone hit = 1 point, miss = -10 points), find the balance between speed and accuracy for your skill level, and determine what you shoot better with hard data (i.e. points scored) if you've got enough ammo to shoot enough rounds with multiple firearms.

The 1911's day as a standard issue service sidearm is over primarily for one reason: cost. The M45A1 was the last 1911 platform selected for procurement on a military contract. Its retail version had an MSRP of $1399. By comparison, the M17 commercial model sells for a bit over $700. Only the USMC's existing logistical system and emotional attachment to the 1911 platform allowed it to soldier on for 40+ years after the US Army officially replaced the 1911 in 1985. When it comes to sidearms today, cost will almost certainly be one of the primary selection factors used to decide what makes the cut.

70 53 My shooting buddy won the Utah State midrange championship yesterday. He shot a 598 with 32 X's. Not bad for a 80 year old sling shooter!! I'm eating some of his Flaming Gorge trout tonight to see if that helps my shooting!! LOL

72 So this week, went to the range. (next week we are in Spokane)

And apart from two drills with my G21 (a Dicken drill cold and then a slow fire accuracy test with same, both at 25 yards) I decided to do some comparison with SOME of the .22s I own.

First up was a no-brand Taurus .22 revolver. I will, some day, own a good .22 revolver. But today is not that day. Multiple failures to ignite but 4/6 rounds did go bang. Group was not great at 7 yards with iron sights but not terrible, all things considered.

Next up was the CZ pair, both Kadet adapters for my old battered CZ 75 and my CA P07. Both printed the best groups and had the best sights overall.

After that was my Ruger MKIV, great gun, but only average on accuracy and sorta heavy compared to Polymer pistols. Not bad at all, but...it's its own thing.

Finally also fired my normal kit gun, a Glock 44 in .22. This had a rough breakin period but it is light, accurate and a good way to end a range session. Did ok on accuracy here, not grouping as tightly as the CZs.

Rounded out the session with a slow fire G21 drill at 25 yards where I was....high and right? That's weird. Good group though.

Project Appleseed does the same on its range targets as did the military units that had to rely on indoor ranges. Bolt action days, the militaries had some pretty unusual adaptations to keep marksmanship levels high at minimal cost. Like one US system that was spring loaded dart kit out of issue rifles where when the recruit fired, the giant dart came out of the barrel and punctured the target (similar practice to barrel collimators that are used on scope and iron sight fitting and used to get on paper at the range).

Don't forget to get a roll of the brown patches to cover the holes with. Each target should be good for at least 100 rounds if you patch the holes up.

I find age plus wear and tear brings the wobbles and a firm help of a sling is welcome. One of the other reasons I dislike optics' use excessively is iron sights don't wobble as apparently as a dot does. Chasing the dot is bad ju ju as it can lead to trigger jerking.

Look up a competitive IDPA group in your area. It’s a timed, competitive shoot and scoot. Very regulated, but you get to move and shoot at different targets, some moving, many static at different distances. And you’re timed, so there’s an element of urgency. It is a different level of shooting that takes you out of the normal static stand and shoot of the range.

With my age and eyes, a red dot just works better for me. I saw that again this week. I was all irons and my groups with a red dot are just better out past 15 yards.

I shoot faster with a dot too.

My Keltec PF9 gets that duty but it is not a permanent fixture. Too many Federal facilities around here including the parking lot I go to daily.

The P320 was oversold as a problem child but I do think that Sig is smarter to announce a new model number and perhaps move to the P365 upsized action to duty. That is more to quell problems in the police market and civilian market than anything else.

If you maintained the P320, it would probably be fine as from what I understand of the documented cases, it was a combination of wear and in the AF Warren AFB case, outright misconduct and falsification to cover up manslaughter at best, murder at worst.

That being said, I have no interest in buying one.
