Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gardening, Home and Nature Thread, Sept. 26![]() A few plants flourished despite this year’s brutal summer. These include Zinnia grandiflora, above. It’s a low, spreading plant two or three inches tall with profuse yellow flowers all summer. Unlike the familiar garden zinnias, it’s a hardy perennial. It’s easy from seed and blooms the first year. Triple-digit temperatures don’t bother it, and it can tolerate considerable dryness, though it does bloom better with regular watering. It would make a good ground cover for dry places.A tough one. Several other tough yellow flowers are highlighted. And a white one.
![]() Blues are almost always welcome, and plumbago is a excellent source of the color.I tend to think of Ceratostigma plumbaginoides (leadwort)as a fall flower. But I guess in some climate it begins blooming in summer and has fall leaf color. ![]() Clematis seed heads are as interesting as the flowers. ![]() Salvias are often good sources of blue. The “Big Blue” hybrid attracted many bumblebees in a sheltered, partly-shaded spot, but it was not happy out in the hot, sunny places. I can’t recommend it for Kansas unless you’re prepared to give it extra water.Great information. Thanks, Don. Edible Gardening/Putting Things By Got extra squash? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I am so pleased with my little garden this year. Ended up,with loads of tiny delicious tomatoes and 4 jars of pickled jalapeños. Froze some poblanos. The best part is that I have had plants that have looked good all along. The hydrangeas kept these delicate pink flowers. The balloon flower is reblooming adding color. Every September, this little shrub blooms with purple flowers and the bees show up like clockwork. Only when this plant is blossoming. I live in the middle,of a city so I wonder where they come from. Hoping to see flowers from my encore azalea soon. You've sent in some great photos from your city garden. Like the bee and the tomato leaves with this shrub. ![]() ![]() If you would like to send photos, stories, links, etc. for the Saturday Gardening Thread, the address is: ktinthegarden at g mail dot com Remember to include the nic or name by which you wish to be known at AoSHQ, or let us know if you want to remain a lurker. 33 Martha Stewart has a beautiful (of course) orchard with many varieties: "These orchard apple trees include Baldwin, Black Oxford, Cortland, Cox’s Orange Pippin, Esopus Spitzenburg, Fuji, Golden Russet, Grimes Golden, Honeycrisp, Liberty, Redfield, Roxbury Russet, Windham Russet, and more." https://tinyurl.com/bdyjzjke Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes at September 19, 2026 03:05 PM 45 Martha Stewart has plantation slaves that tend to her apple trees. Mystery shrub looks like it might be a type of Bluebeard, which can be blue, white, or purple.

Eye-catching post, KT. The squashmingos were so clever. Having two legs really helps the illusion.

Oops, that's what I get for not refreshing the page...
From Boise area: Lows 57-59 F, highs 81-93, temps are dropping fast. I've been harvesting tomatoes - slicers, Romas, SunGold cherry - but they already show some cold damage. We hope to get a few more cantaloupes but I'm skeptical. The poblanos and peppers may give us a few, but overall they were a waste of space. I planted 2 zucchini too close together so they haven't been very productive - which is fine, actually. The broccolini have a ton of aphids or something - I'm still collecting the tips. I planted a few fall radishes, I'll have to see if they'll mature. HOA water due to go off on Oct. 9th - grateful that we got a full season of water this year. Husband's been working on the new edging along the back of the house, as well as some power-washing and painting. I've been processing the harvest - cutting and freezing cantaloupes, roasting tomatoes to eventually can up tomato sauce (21 half-pint jars so far, probably a few more to go). The linden tree is already shedding gold leaves. The Johnny Jump-Ups have revived after summer dormancy and look nice. I let one carrot go to seed and it's providing cut flowers. Timely post. Just came in from trimming back the bee plant. It gets kind of straggly(is that a word?)after it blossoms and I learned last year that it can be cut back and returns without a problem. Once we start getting icing here in the DMV plants that can survive the winter still can have a hard time.
Been cool and rainy here early for MD. Still hoping for second summer. Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at September 26, 2026 02:02 PM (kJmSS) 11
Love the flower arrangement in the pitcher. I so envy people who can do that sort of thing.

My blue salvia are still going strong and the bees love it. Do bees hate red salvia as much as I do? Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes at September 26, 2026 02:08 PM (kpS4V) 13
I plucked my last sad little tomatoes yesterday and found one remaining zucchini. I think I'll pull up my veggie garden tomorrow.
Maybe I'll plant some kale. Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes at September 26, 2026 02:10 PM (kpS4V) 14
Kale should keep the varmints away.

Try one of the Russian kales if you're interested in flavor. Not much good as a garnish. It wilts. Flowers are edible, though. Posted by: KT at September 26, 2026 02:18 PM (1RGZ5) 17
I feel your pain Eris. I still nave some tiny tomatoes and a couple of poblanos and almost cut everything down but maybe just a few more days....My terrace is filthy and I really need to wash it but as long as the veges are there I can procrastinate.

Great photos Don in Kansas and Sharon!
My 3 tomato plants produced a lot of tomatoes this year, but I'm guessing I lost about half to blossom end rot. I still got enough to share a few with my awesome neighbors and SIL. And several more good sized green ones on the vine. I think it was successful enough to try again next year and perhaps expand operations. I want to try to grow the serendipity berry in my yard, but I can’t find seeds anywhere. Does anyone know a guy in tropical Africa?

I’d rather eat dirt than kale.
